A 2008 Georgia Baseball Fan Page
Information on our Top Baseball Prospects & 2008 Baseball Graduates!

This site is maintained strictly by Liz Houser. I am just a baseball mom who has enjoyed watching all of the talented baseball players from around the state of Georgia grow up and achieve great success! As most of you know, baseball begins when our sons  a very young. In Georgia, baseball is a year round sport. Over the years, many of us have watched several of these Top Prospects improve and make a name for themselves.
As the wife of a former coach, and mom of a player,  I have quietly watched and  supported all of the players that I have met through the years.
So,  I have paid a little extra attention to the players that I personally know or players that I have  watched through the years.

I would be happy to add information about any other Georgia Top Prospects. Please feel free to e-mail me any photos, bios, information on your college plans,  college signings, or decision on the draft. Many players have told me that they will let me know when they make a decision & I will pass on that information on to you.

I would love to post any additional information on your  accomplishments. Keep us posted on your success next year!

Dawgs Lose To Fresno State In College World Series Final

Georgia Bulldogs Baseball
June 26, 2008

After splitting the first two games of the series, Georgia and Fresno State faced off in the final game to determine the 2008 National Champion.

Unfortnately for the Dawgs, pitcher Justin Wilson and right fielder Steve Detwiler willed Fresno State to their first ever College World Series

title and first ever National Championship in a men's sport.

Wilson pitched eight strong innings allowing one run, five hits and nine strikeouts.

The only run he allowed came on a Gordon Beckham solo home run to lead off the bottom of the Georgia eighth.

Detwiler hit a two-run home run in the second, an RBI double in the third and then added a three-run homer in the sixth.

The Georgia Bulldogs finish the season as the runner-up with a final record of 45-25-1 and an SEC Championship.

Had the Dawgs won the national title, they would have set the record for most losses by a team that won the championship.

Georgia's Baseball Talent!

State of Georgia packs a punch

Being from Atlanta, allow me to comment on the baseball talent in the state of Georgia. Texas and California have as much talent, but when you consider how much bigger those states are than Georgia, it is remarkable how many good prospects come out of the Georgia.

Brave’s scouting director Roy Clark has made a career of  drafting Georgia HS players - every year they take player from the state, and some of their best prospects have come from the state.

But check out all the players from Georgia taken in the first 60 picks.

6 guys taken in the first 60 picks from the state of Geogria. The East Cobb region, just north of Atlanta is so rich with talent it is almost unbelievable.

Second Beckham selected by Rays

06/06/2008 4:32 PM ET

One day later, Jeremy follows kid brother, Tim, to Tampa
Ticket InfoAll-Star Game - Vote Now!

• Beckham's No. 1!

Not too long ago, Jeremy Beckham stayed up late at night thinking and dreaming of what it would be like to play in the big leagues with his kid brother, Tim.

Given the right opportunity, Jeremy said they could turn effortless double plays together, anchoring the middle infield on a Major League club.

Thanks to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Beckhams will have that chance.

It's a dream, you could say, come true.

Jeremy was selected by the Rays on Friday with the first pick of the 17th round, the 503rd overall, in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. His younger brother, Tim, who recently graduated from Griffin High School, was the first overall pick on Thursday.

About 100 friends and family attended a Draft party on Thursday for Tim and Jeremy, knowing they would both be selected by some club during the two-day Draft. And although Jeremy said at the party that the Rays were interested in signing him, it was still a long shot that both Beckhams would start their big league careers in the same system.

"It's dream-like," Jeremy said in a telephone interview on Friday. "It's just surreal right now. I know what's happening, but it feels like I'm in a daze right now."

Tim still hasn't emerged from his fog either. In the 24 hours since he became the No. 1 overall pick, the prep shortstop has been all over the sports media.

"It's a dream right now," Tim said. "I'm living the dream."

And now, the Beckhams can live their dream of playing professional baseball together. It's something Jeremy has fantasized about for quite some time.

"I've dreamed about it at night, seriously," Jeremy said of playing on the same team as his brother. "It's hard to explain, but it's just a different feel with my brother in the middle infield. Everything is so natural."

Asked his first thought when he heard the Rays had drafted his brother, Tim said, "Double plays, baby."

Tampa Bay's decision to draft the tandem can only do wonders for their progression through the Minor League system. Tim has said he adopted his relentless work ethic from Jeremy, who, during his senior season at Georgia Southern University, batted .333 and had 24 stolen bases in 51 games.

"It'll be good for both of them," said Griffin H.S. coach Jamie Cassady, who noted Jeremy was the best defensive infielder he's coached. "Jeremy will work Tim to death."

When told of that, Tim replied, "Working me to death is what I need."

Jeremy, 22, said the Minors' daily grind won't be nearly as insufferable with his 18-year-old brother -- and best friend -- alongside.

"Going through the Minors and the stories you hear about how grueling it is, it's good to know your family is there and someone is going through the same thing," Jeremy said.

They'll be able to push each other through workouts -- as they have done for years. And they'll provide support when one goes through an inevitable slump.

The Beckhams will head back to work in one or two weeks, Jeremy predicted.

"We're starting at the bottom of the totem pole, but the Beckhams are ready to play," Jeremy said. "We've just got to keep working hard, and we're just starting out our grind. We're hoping to some day be on the biggest stage and perform."

Georgia's Aflac Players

Ethan Martin is a first round pick by Los Angeles !
From Stephens County HS
Los Angeles Dodgers first round pick is Ethan Martin from Stephens County HS  in Toccoa GA

1st round Draft pick!
Ethan Martin, rhp/3b, Stephens County HS, Toccoa (National Rank: 16)

Before the season, Martin was thought of as a power-hitting third baseman with a good arm.
His performance on the mound this spring has led to teams being split on whether he will be a pitcher or a position player in the pros.
Playing his summer ball in the talent-rich East Cobb program in suburban Atlanta, Martin was selected as an Aflac All-American in the fall.
He was a standout quarterback in high school, but is committed to play baseball only at Clemson.
In the field, Martin is a plus defender with a plus arm and athleticism.
His best tool, though, is his raw power and strength.
On the mound, Martin offers a fastball in the mid-90s and an above-average breaking ball with slurve action.
His changeup is also advanced for a high school pitcher and can be a plus pitch.
Where in the past he may have been labeled a thrower, Martin has shown pitchability throughout the spring.
Scouts love the way Martin plays the game, with a country strong swing and dirtbag mentality. They also love his versatility.
The team that drafts Martin will be have a tough decision to make on his long-term future,
because he offers the versatility and talent to reach the big leagues either wa

Zeke Spuill (2S), RHP

 Zeke Spuill

Zeke Spruill, rhp, Kell HS, Marietta (National Rank: 66)

Another Georgia native with the benefit of displaying his skills in the East Cobb League,
Spruill impressed scouts last summer
and has continued the trend this spring.
Spruill has a fluid delivery that is clean and repeatable.
He has been up to 93 mph and pitches at 91-92. His fastball has life with sink and is a plus pitch.
Commanding all three pitches, Spruill also throws a curveball with slurvy action and a changeup.
At 6-foot-4 and 184 pounds, Spruill has a pitcher's body with athleticism and projection.
Scouts feel he could pitch closer to 93-94 by the time he reaches the big leagues.
A Georgia commit, Spruill is known as a competitor and a winner with plus makeup.
Spruill, along with Martin, has separated himself as one of the top two high school pitching prospects in Georgia

3rd Round Pick by the Houstin Astros---Chase Davidson from Milton HS

Chase Davidson

Georgia Top Prospect-Chase Davidson from Milton HS In Alpharetta, GA

Houston Astros Draft
Chase Davidson

Houston Astros pick up Chase  Davidson 1B for Milton HS in Alpharetta HS.

SCOUTING REPORT (3/1):
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Davidson has performed on the national stage for the past three years
with the East Cobb Astros, so he is well-known to scouts.
Few hitters in the 2008 class have the raw power of the lefthanded-hitting Davidson
and he's shown it on many occasions.
When Davidson is selective and stays inside the ball, he can hit it out to any part of the park.
He gives up a lot of at-bats with wild swings and an inconsistent approach,
however, and scouts question his hitting instincts.
As a high school junior, he hit .397-7-20.
Davidson is also a top-level football player whose best position, surprisingly,
is punter. He signed with Georgia for baseball, but may also look to play football in college.

DAVID RAWNSLEY UPDATE (5/15):
Davidson enjoyed a strong spring as he reworked his hitting approach and swing
to give him much more consistency than he's shown in the past.
Most scouts are familiar with Davidson from seeing his enormous strength
for the East Cobb Astros
over the past three years and the difference has been notable.
It didn't hurt Davidson's stock when he blasted a tape-measure home run off summer
teammate Zeke Spruill with a full contingent of scouts watching earlier this spring, either.
Davidson hit .429 with 11 home runs this spring.DR

LOS ANGELES-AL (Compensation for Matt Harvey, unsigned pick, 2007)
Rank Player Pos. Class B-T HT WT High School Hometown Commitment B’date
112 Zach Cone OF Sr. R-R 6-2 200 Parkview Stone Mountain, Ga. Georgia 12/14/1989
SCOUTING REPORT: Cone was a virtual unknown to all but area scouts coming into this spring as his Parkview High team plays together during the summer and Cone didn’t play in any major team events or showcases despite living in suburban Atlanta. Parkview is the same school that produced Atlanta Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur, and there are plenty of athletic similarities between the two. Cone is a plus-power/plus-speed type of athlete with excellent bat speed and a high ceiling offensively. On the season, he hit .419-6-23 with 16 stolen bases. He throws in the upper-80s off the mound so his arm strength is a potential plus tool as a center fielder as well. The athletic genes are there as well, as Cone’s father Ronnie was a running back at Georgia Tech and for the New York Jets, and his brother Kevin is a wide receiver at Shorter College. There has been no faster riser on the draft charts during the second half of the spring than Cone and it wasn’t uncommon to see 40-plus scouts at some of his games. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Cone move all the way up to the second round by draft day.--DAVID RAWNSLEY

Tyler Cline--Drafted by Cincinnati
119. Reds Tyler Cline RHP Sr. R-R 6-3 215 Cass HS Cartersville, Ga. 6-24-90 SIGNED $240,000

Draft Update: The  Cincinnati Reds picked Tyler Cline, RHP  from Cass HS in Catersville GA

.

What ever happened to Tyler Cline? Tyler Cline has become one of those players that I have thought about and followed through the years. I have asked parents about Tyler.  How's that temper?   Did that tough kid get in a fight or could he use that energy on the baseball field. Well, it looks like Tyler has a big future ahead of him.
I just hope he stays out of  trouble.

These are my personal Memories of Tyler Cline when he was young player on a Top East Cobb Travel Team....

At the time, Tyler was only in 5th or 6th grade but he left a lasting impression.

Tyler Cline was a tough kid with a don't mess with me attitude. Tyler was serious, and often seemed like an angry kid with the attitude "I'm here to play baseball and not to be friends."   All of the players were from Georgia, but most were from around the metro Atlanta Area.  Tyler Cline was from Cartersville, Georgia, a 45 minutes- 1-hour ride to the North. But for some reason Tyler seemed to feel like an outsider.Tyler had a much thicker distinct southern accent and  that may have contributed to his tough guy persona.

Tyler always had that "you better not mess with me attitude... I don't like the way you're looking at me... What are you looking at stupid ...but we could not his favorite his expressions...and if you were anywhere near the team dugout, you could definitely hear Tyler's thick southern accent saying the following, "Oh Shut up! No, you shut up! Ahh Shut up... You shut up."

We could never forget Tyler Cline and his angry rants of "You shut up".  If Tyler became angry, he would start telling everyone to "Shut-up". Tyler's version of shut up contained several extra syllables.   Listening to Tyler's angry rants   was usually humorous.  However, if a player smiled or laughed, Tyler would proceed to tell them to shut up too. Before you knew it, Tyler was telling everyone to shut up.

Tyler's pronunciation sounded more like " Youuuuuuuuuuahhh  shaaaaaaaadddddd uuuuuuuuuhhp" My son never got into it with Tyler but would come home and do his impersonation of Tyler Cline telling everyone to Shut Up.

For the next several years, my kids could not get the sound of Tyler Cline's voice, accent and comments out of their head especially their favorite Tyler Cline Rant, "You shut up! Rant/routine out of their head. Tyler would start ranting "Oh Shut up!...No you shut up! Ahh Shut up... You shut up. You better shut up...." Most people have their favorite comedy routines from Saturday Night Live or a favorite movie embedded in their head. My family has several routines but one of our favorites is "Tyler Cline's You Shut up Routine" Still to this day, the comedians in my family can easily transform into Tyler Cline and begin Tyler's "Shut up routine with each other"

Tyler, Good Luck in the Future! We will never forget you, and I'm sure if you read this story, you'd probably say,

"Oh, you better Shut Up....... in that Tyler Cline way !

Cline prepares for big leagues

Associate Sports Editor
Sunday, Jun 08, 2008
Today, former Cass High School pitcher Tyler Cline will sign a professional
contract to play baseball in the Cincinnati Reds organization.

This, three days after being drafted in the fourth round with the 119th pick.
Cline, who was rated the 24th best prospect from Georgia in this
year’s draft class, according to mlb.com, was the 12th player from the state to be drafted.

“It’s been real exciting,” Cline said of the whole process.
“I’m just waiting (for today) when the scout from the Reds brings the contract for me to sign.”

Cass head coach Todd Eubanks said this is an exciting time for Cline and
the rest of the Cass baseball program.

“You always talk about seeing them grow from teenage boys to young men,”
Eubanks said. “Tyler has definitely done that.”

Although Cline only played one year for the Colonels, Eubanks said he brought
a lot to a team this season after they lost a lot of seniors from their 2007 team.

“He came in with a spark for our team that had lost several players to graduation,”
Eubanks said. “He and the other seniors helped maintain the level we are trying to get at.”

Cline drafted by Reds

Associate Sports Editor
Friday, Jun 06, 2008
Former Cass High School pitcher Tyler Cline realized a dream Thursday —
he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds with the 119th pick of the 2008 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

“It’s a dream come true,” the right-hander said. “I’m excited.
I’ve worked hard to get where I’m at.”
Cline was informed he was picked by the Reds in the fourth round by his advisor.
“He basically told me that the Reds picked me and that I would be going to
Rookie ball in Sarasota, Fla.,” Cline said.
Last week, Cline said he got a good impression for the Reds when he threw for them at
The Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.
“I pitched to one batter and they said they had seen enough,” the 6-foot, 2-inch player said.
“They said they’d be back in touch with me and that was today.”
For Cline, realizing this dream is something he’ll never forget, especially since his family was there to see it.
“So many kids dream of this day,” he said. “Growing up, you dream of being a Major League Baseball player.
For my family to be there was very special. My mom and dad have helped put me where I am at today.
They’ve stuck with me through everything.”
Cline, who is 17, said being so young, he’ll have to grow up quickly once he gets to Florida.
“It will be a big experience,” Cline said. “I’m only 17, so I’ll have a lot to learn.
I’m looking forward to the challenge and I can’t wait to get started.”

I have been big fan of JT's since he was a young player and Matt's team.

In the later years, I watched JT play on his  high school team & travel team.
