Well you can t exactly stop going down a steep hill at 60mph can you and give first aid. So what is going on up here at 60 degrees North? Not a lot of wind lately strangely. There has been a lot of card making in our house for Christmas. The Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Festival has been on last weekend. Our Bigton darts team has been competing. We won our first two matches and sadly lost the next three. It s a good crack. Taking part is what counts isn t it? I had to do a training course for my council work the other week. A theory course for driving which I actually really enjoyed and found out that I knew a lot more than I realised. At Shetland Training I wandered into the First Aid course by mistake and didn t realise until the tutor picked up this rather well endowed blonde for practicing resuscitation on then I twigged I was in the wrong room, fortunately my other course hadn t started! A friend of ours was up for the weekend, with her son, and we took them out and about. They enjoyed themselves despite their Atlantic Airways flight being cancelled on the return trip so they had to spend another night here, which was a bonus for them! Ben was very excited at seeing a group of seals on the beach playing and cavorting in the breakers. We took them to Twatt (we could have gone to Sodom as well) and Aith and saw the lifeboat and the biggest starfish in the harbour which the eldest C picked up! Fearless child. I have to make it clear here to my Shetland readers that Jarlshof was not recently being visited by sCHNKWKS NјџџџџTEXTTEXT€8FDPPFDPP<FDPCFDPC>FDPCFDPC@STSHSTSHBSTSHSTSHB2SYIDSYIDPBSGP SGP dBINK INK hBBTEPPLC lBBTECPLC „B FONTFONTЄB~STRSPLC "C:PRNTWNPR\C№FRAMFRAMLKˆTITLTITLдK&DOP DOP њK"sed onto the side of the road. Well Shetland Diary Golly! what pressure have I been under to put out the next edition. Who would want to be a columnist? My lovely neighbour Elma asked the other morning why I had not written to her for a while? Well I said there is one in the offing but with the 3Cs on holidays and keeping them entertained plus other household duties it has been at the bottom of the agenda. My father asked as well because he passes it on to the population in New Zealand. Incidentally I hope Mr Hurcombe enjoyed the Puffin Poo for answering the Tagine question correctly. No one has told me what a Marmite is so the offer for that runs into November. The weather here, despite the time of year, has not really drawn in which is worrying for a lot of us who are concerned about the state of the world s climate and effects on the environment. Migratory birds which normally stop off in Scotland and Shetland for a visit are still here! The trees (not here) are still green and the climate is still reasonably warm though here in the last few days there has been a noticeable change in the temperature. Of course the sunsets are getting shorter and quicker. No more Merrie Dancers either which is a shame. Birds I mentioned, of the feathered kind!, have been dropping into our sceptred isle from all over. So have the twitchers! They have been going bonkers. Good business for Shetland s owners of accommodation and eateries mind. I never knew what a Red-flanked Blue tail was until I saw a picture of it in the Shetland Times, and how did the Pechora Pipit get its name then? Or a Pallas Warbler? Was it named in honour of Jack Pallas? The mind boggles. There are so many birds everywhere. The V shaped flights of geese are honking their way over us as well. A sad tale to recount; when I was driving home thome Jedi with light sabres! It was only a couple of mad people walking around Jarlshof in the dark with a couple of torches because they thought it was fun - now there s an idea for Island Tours, ghost tours of ancient ruins. We had Roast Goat which was lovely. A nice meat which has loads of flavour which goes very well with rosemary and garlic. We have a freezer full of meat, lamb from Yell and goat from Houlls. I bought a pumpkin to roast and use for soup. The supermarkets only seem to sell them at this time of the year for Halloween. I read in The Observer recently that UK citizens are expected to spend Ѓ120 million this year whereas our transatlantic cousins spend enough to support a nationwide industry worth Ѓ4.7 billion. Why? Do we have to follow Americanised consumption so blindly anyway? Apparently Halloween started out as a bit of fun In 2005, in the UK, 786 Asbos were issued on the night? Shetland s winter social life is gearing up. The first Up Helly Aa committee meeting is coming up soon where the new Guizer Jarl will be appointed. Bingo is coming to the hall soon. Dances and parties. I have to make a Christmas cake and perhaps will try a pudding this year though I may have left it too late. I was preparing dinner the other evening when there was a knock on the door, eldest C answered it. A man with a gentle transatlantic twang was at the door asking if the man who owned the garage next door to us could help them with a punctured tyre. I said unfortunately that it was now not a working garage and offered to help. The car was a Ford Mondeo and to be honest the tyres were a nightmare. You get five of the wheel nuts off and then there was one left with a funny little pattern on it but the doo dah for getting the wheel nuts off didn t correspond until someone found a little attachment in the glove box corresponding to the patterned nut. My neighbour Les had joined us by then and helped get that nut off but then we discovered that the wheel hub was completely rusted to the axle. We rang Leasks car hire and told them the news. It ended up staying there overnight on the jack! The tourists ordered a cab back to Lerwick. They were a nice bunch actually from Canada and the States. Some of them were lawyers and they told me that they had been coming to Shetland for the last 13 years. They gave us a tin of real maple syrup and three friendship pins for the 3Cs. Hope to see you next all next time! There is a new link on my site to Sambava Spices. I found this when I was looking for some info about Black Cardamons. It is a nifty website and ideal for cooks making dishes that demand certain spice and herb combinations. I ordered some for my tagine recipes and one for Chinese pork which looks scrumptious. Bonus is that the orders are sent postage free! The packets are of a bigger size than those which supermarkets force on you and well packed too. Plus you get given recipes with your order. Have a look. I can recommend it. Another recommendation is a delightful book by a lady called Millie Vigor who has just moved back down south from Yaafield, a hamlet just opposite us. An intriguing story about a couple who moved up here and settled in to the local community. Published by The Shetland Times Ltd (ISBN 1-898852-98-7). I recall someone saying I should write my memoirs but there is more of a chance of Spiggy becoming a nudist beach!
