There is a fabulous water mill there that is well worth a visit. Duncan s parents have a farm in Quendale. There is a lot of farming in South Shetland. On the way back from nursery today my youngest and me popped in to the farmer near the Bigton turn-off as they advertise sheep skins there. He was a very pleasant weather beaten gent and showed me a wonderful selection of skins that had been home cured and dried and finished off. They are very reasonable too ranging from Ѓ25 to Ѓ28 each. His daughter works in the Shetland Soap Company in Lerwick in Commercial Street just opposite Connachies where my wife now works. She has been nearly three weeks and though it is a long day for her she is enjoying it. It will help pay the bills anyway. I have a job interview coming up very soon for the Shetland library. If I get this, as it is part time, 1300 to 1700 Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri and 1200 to 1600 Saturdays, but quite well paid, both of us will be working. We then have to work out the logistics of a nursery for the youngest one and after school care for the two oldest. It is a difficult one because our youngest would have to leave the Dunrossness nursery (and her little mates like Duncan!) and go to a nursery in Lerwick but then she would go to school in Dunrossness with her older brother and sister from next August so we will have to see what works out. I am quite happy being a househusband and it is a change from commuting and office work! Fresh air and a bit of exercise is just what the doctor ordered for high blood pressure. You can t complain about that can you? So Christmas is only about four weeks away. I have to help with the Bigton Toddler Christmas party and volunteered to make some Crudites and carrot caCHNKWKS 2јџџџџTEXTTEXTж!FDPPFDPP$FDPCFDPC&FDPCFDPC(STSHSTSH*STSHSTSH*2SYIDSYIDP*SGP SGP d*INK INK h*BTEPPLC l*BTECPLC „* FONTFONTЄ*jSTRSPLC +:PRNTWNPRH+FFRAMFRAMŽ/ˆTITLTITL0(DOP DOP >0"y back from nursery today my youngesShetland Diary It s official. The last two weeks it has been warmer in Shetland than in Southern England. Though my wife came home from her job in Lerwick last week and said it had been sleeting! I was puzzled because in Bigton it had been a fine sunny day! The last two weeks since our friend Michelle left on the Tuesday morning have been more or less glorious. Though it is going to be very cold by the end of the week the locals say the cold never lasts long unlike the permeating freezing frosts in the South. We have such beautiful sunny weather except Sunday a week ago when it was slightly windy so the bairns (children) and us stayed in almost all day and watched Shoebox Zoo , an excellent series produced by Scottish BBC in conjunction with Canadian TV, on DVD. Hard to believe it is winter but the hard weather will come. We have already had a taste of how strong the wind can be and it can really be more than a little unsettingly when it is going full blast. I had put my CV online about a month ago (you lose all sense of time here sometimes) and recently got a phone call from an agency who specialised in security work and she was looking to hire a couple of female security staff specifically for Sumburgh Airport. They had to be female in order for searches to be made on females obviously. I was thinking of the doing the Tootsie thing but then thought it could inconvenient plus the neighbours who already think I am slightly eccentric may think I have totally lost it! Cheeky agency anyway, she didn t offer me any prospective rewards! Like a case of wine from Laithwaites for example! This weekend my youngest went to Duncan s birthday party, who is a friend from nursery and Bigton toddler s group. She had a great time and really socialised well. Duncan lives in kes as there are about 40 bairns plus parents coming! Mind you if I am working then some alternative plans will have to be made of course. The older two are working very hard at school and have a Christmas concert to do. Our oldest daughter not only is singing with the Lerwick Choral Society but also playing flute at the school concert, she only started learning four weeks ago!, and also has been asked to sing solo for the local church group at Bigton Community Hall to help raise money for hymn books. She is good at everything it seems. Our son is also in the concert but he has not yet started a musical instrument but is keen on the drums! Oh dear!! Still we have got a garage he could practice in!
