Last Saturday there was a significant sea quake of around 4.0 on the Richter scale which people in Unst and as far down as Scalloway felt. The worst for 30 years apparently. Mind you there was an earthquake in Scotland last year which people all over felt! I have already placed an item on this site about Spinning Yarns which is an audio CD produced by pupils from Brae High School. This CD is made up of audio recordings of some of Shetlands finest storytellers and poets. It is not a usual run of the mill product that may perhaps be found in HMV or Virgin shops but a product that is made with TLC and something which highlights the individuality and passion for local traditions and passing down of legends. I hear it is selling well so if you are intrigued then have a look at their website. See News and Events page. I have been take into the bosom of the heady theatrical spirit that the Shetland Drama Festival invokes in people every year at this time. I can t tell you too much but I am performing the role of an Undertaker! Tinged with a slight Kiwi twang! Time to mention a sad moment in Shetland. A couple who were devoted to each other in marriage, love and spirit were found dead in their house in Papil in Burra, a community on the West side of the mainland. Mandy suffered from MS and her husband Harry Horse was an artist, musician, and a brilliant cartoonist, who looked devotedly looked after his wife in her illness. Harry was a brilliant children s book writer and also did much more through his cartoons in the national press and other media work. It was a huge tragedy and has hit the Shetland community hard. We cannot contemplate how people must be feeling to take their lives in such a tragic manner. However the weeks over Christmas and the New Year have been around 8 degrees which is considerably warmer than the rest of the UK. Absolutely fine weather with the minimum of gales, which have been noticeable by their absence! . Not bloody likely this time around. We have had the most incredibly disgusting weather. Last week we had consistently high winds going non stop for a week! One night our eldest came in to our room about two o clock in the morning complaining that she could not sleep because of the noise! Well we didn t complain about the noise the hail was making against our windows. It sounded like a thousand cats all rattling their claws against our windows non stop for 12 hours. We were told later that the wind speeds were reaching well over 80 miles per hour which is a little unsettling when you thing there is nothing to divert them between them and your house which is standing there quite isolated. Well the tiles doth protest a lot and the actual noise of the wind is the most irritating thing but at the end of the day you just have to grin and bear it. I had experimented with crawling in to the cupboard underneath the stairs, where it is extremely quiet, to keep my wine collection company and sleep in there but it has not actually got to that& & & & & & .yet!!! One of the local school bus drivers confided to me that she was actually considering getting exterior winter weather shutters for their windows to stop the noise of the sleet, which I had been thinking about myself. For a local Shetlander to tell you that they are finding the change in weather pa that we should honour their decisions and just look on all the good things that they did in their lives and what they contributed to life and how will people remember them. Life is not a bowl of roses is it? I would like to dedicate this edition of the diary to their memories. Apart from the weather life is going on in Shetland as normal. The drama festival looms as mentioned, Youth Club is going on. My youngest was allowed to attend for the very time last Friday and she came home, bouncing because she had such a good time, with a pirate hat and an eye patch which she had made! Of course we had some quality time as parents while they were all up at the hall for a couple of hours! Chance to watch the darts matches from Lakeside!!!! Fascinating stuff..I love darts!!! Thank you to those TARS members who wrote to me as a result of their receiving their latest Signals editions. It was lovely to receive emails from and a special thank you to those who have actually been up to this part of the world; so welcome to the Shetland Diary; Terry Kirker from California, Nick Peglitsis from England (though he has a splendid website; www.nicolaspeglitsis.com which really bears looking at) and Audrie Cossar from Canada. I have to say that it really is great to get such interesting feed back from people who you have never met but to hear their reaction to your website is encouraging! Also a big welcome to Dave Wheeler from Fair Isle who has just joined the website s diary update list. Dave for those of you who don t know is a very experienced weather forecast (he has all his work cut out for his at the moment mind!) and has a very good website. He also produces a weekly weather forecast column for our paper The Shetland Times. Something very essential for islanders who depend on what the weather is doing! Well, we are looking forward to our first visitor of the year who arrives from Medway in a weeks time, hope the weather is slightly better Bob, for some chill out time. I will get the Reestit mutton out and make up the soup. Plenty of scallops and fish too and a couple of nice drams of good malt to wash it all down. Hopefully the ferries will be running by then because at the moment the shelves at Somerfield and Coop are completely bare! No fresh veg or meat!! because all the ferries have been cancelled due to the weather OF COURSE!!!! Luckily we did a big shop before all of this so we are sitting happy& & & & & for the moment !!!!!!!!!!!! h wihich she had made!
