I work for Nikola Engineering
and Nikola Wireless here in Sequim Washington.
I am building electronic prototypes and managing and maintaining our computer
network. I am also building up Sequim's fastest wireless broadband ISP. I
finally have a job that uses both degrees that I have, Electronics engineering
and Computer networking. I started working for Nikola in January of 2005. I am
enjoying my job and finally being able to return home.
Updates
I have made some updates to my site. I have added a Links page, Ham Shack page, and a Projects page. Check out my new AB-952 portable mast project. Enjoy. Just added pictures to the ham shack page, you can now see my messy ham shack. Just updated the projects page. Started a breakout box for my TS440S.
Computer Tips
I see so many people with computer problems that
can or could have been prevented. Here are some simple steps to keep your
Windows based operating system in tip top shape.
1. Install a firewall, I recommend ZoneAlarm.
2. Install anti virus software. Use AVG anti virus
free edition, better than Norton and its FREE!
3. Check for Spy ware. I use Ad aware
from Lavasoft and Spybot search and destroy. Run a scan every day from each to keep your system clean.
4. Install Big Fix, Big Fix finds patches and updates for your OS and other
programs on your PC. Its also FREE!
5. Check Windows update every Thursday. MS posts new updates and patches
Wednesday at midnight.
6 One of the most important tips is DONT OPEN ATTACHMENTS in your email. This
is the best way viruses spread. Verify the attachment before opening it, if you
need to open them. Ask the person who sent it to you "Did you send me an
attached file?" if they didn’t chances are its a virus and they have one too.
7. Defragment your hard drive regularly. I recommend using a program called DisKeeper Its not free,
but its worth paying for.
8. Who can forget the greatest browser in the world, Mozilla Fire Fox. Built in pop blocker, tabbed browsing and the best secuirty too!
9. Check and clean your registry for errors. MS put out a tool called Regclean, it can be found at hotfiles.com. MS does not support this program anymore, but it still works great.
10. Check how long what your computer boots. MS created a program call
Bootvis. Their not supporting it any more, and is becoming hard to
find. You can find a copy here at MajorGeeks.com.
If you follow these simple and easy steps your computing experience will be
more enjoyable. Plus you will have fewer headaches. Taking care of your computer
is like changing your oil in your car. It may seem ok for a while, but if you don’t
change your oil regularly, you will have problems. I hope these tips help you. Send
me an E-mail if you find this helpful. Matthew <>< E-mail me.
