Ask the Reeve, January 7, 2008I've been asked a question by Jaanar of Bridgestein, who hails from Shadowmist. Q: What is required to become a reeve? A: If you are a part of a functioning kingdom or shire, you should contact the Head Reeve (called Guildmaster of Reeves in some places, or perhaps by yet another title with which I'm not familiar) to ask about being scheduled to take a Reeve's Test. In most kingdoms, a score of 75% or better (this number can vary from place to place) is needed on that test in order to become a Reeve. Even then, one is only a Reeve for anywhere from six months to a year (again, this varies from place to place) -- after which, one must again test to retain active status as a Reeve. If your kingdom/shire lacks a Guild of Reeves, you should contact your Monarchy (or the elected leaders of your game, if they are otherwise known) to ask about how they go about establishing someone as a Reeve. If you're starting your own HFS group, read the rules many times. Learn them. Start acting as a Reeve. Most importantly, create your own (or ask other Reeves' Guilds or other Reeves you know for copies of) tests and get a few other people acting as Reeves for your new group. Then have one of your new Reeves create a test for you to take -- so that you're an official, tested, Reeve in your group, just like all the others are. Most of all, however, the biggest requirements to be a Reeve are as follows: 1) Knowledge of the HFS Rules of Play for your group. 2) Ability and willingness to apply the rules fairly and consistently in all of your group's games, regardless of who may or may not be playing in each game. 3) A willingness to NOT be a popular person -- a real Reeve is never a popular person, because he/she is constantly telling people when they're messing up and penalizes them for their mistakes. (The HFS Rules of Play have more penalties built into them for rule breakers than they do rewards for those who do not break the rules.) 4) A thick skin is of the utmost importance for a Reeve. Every group has its problem players, those who will cheat consistently, lie consistently, and do anything else they can do to gain advantage in an HFS game, no matter how contrived, silly, or just plain stupid. You can't avoid them. They'll cause trouble for any person who is truly trying to be a Reeve. Do your best to enforce the rules fairly and consistently despite these bad apples in your bunch -- and let your thick skin help you to shrug off the attacks you will definitely receive from this quarter. 5) A willingness to Reeve. Always be willing to Reeve, even if your group ends up having you Reeve every game they play. If, even when they loudly disagree with some of your calls or don't like how you enforce the rules all the time, your group always has you Reeving their games -- it's because they trust you as a Reeve. At this point, you know you're a Reeve -- especially if this sort of situation persists for three years. (If there was an experience-earning class named Reeve in HFS, I'd be something like an 18th level Reeve...) 6) A willingness to ask questions and learn new things. Having written to ask your question of me is your first step to becoming a Reeve. Never stop wanting to learn new things, especially as related to the HFS Rules of Play. Remember, you're there to interpret the Rules of Play as much as you are there simply to enforce them. Being willing to learn new things will help you to see how your group views certains rules so that you can use your position as a Reeve to interpret the rules in such ways as to keep the game fun for everyone in your group -- not just for a select few.been a while againOnce again, been a while since I've blogged. So far, so good here at work!I've got my World of Warcraft horde paladin (I play on the Shadow Council server) up to 62nd level, now. Outlands rocks!Found a new and very addictive web-based game called Onslaught. It's an awesome 'tower defense' game. I post on the blogs (and have a couple of recorded high scores) as The Master Reeve. I introduced Josh to the game. His comment: "I never thought I'd say it, but I stayed up playing this instead of WoW, last night!"Started up a fish tank at home. Had a little trouble with it, at first. As it turned out, i hadn't let the nitrogen cycle start up, so my fish weren't surviving. Now the cycle's going and the first I have are doing fine. I need to get a couple more this Monday, I think. Thanks, Ceci, for your suggestions and tips on the fish tank thing! Now if only I can keep Enya from 'going fishing' by sticking her paw into the tank where the filter's little waterfall pours in...We've had a LOT of rain over the summer. Mom's been disappointed that we haven't been able to take my son to the swimming pool very much, because of the weather. (Why does rain always show up on weekends, anyway?) The past few days've been in the mid-80's, too, after a much milder-than-normal summer, far as temperatures go.Claudia got a sonogram and found out that she'll be giving me a neice soon. At least her morning sickness is finally starting to go away -- it was kicking her ass, poor thing.I'm not active at HFS anymore. My new job, that I started back in May, has me working on Saturdays. From what Josh tells me, Silver Spire's seriously in decline, too. HFS might be finally dying out, down here. There's a great possibility of not only saving it but making it something that won't die out -- but there's that one member of Hollowfist left down here who's being a stubborn, moronic ass about it -- he just doesn't want to give up his 'cult of personality' and lose what power, influence, and ego-boosting it gives him. I'd just as soon ignore that he exists, at this point, and move on with keeping Silver Spire alive.
