Hawkeye 5, Brockton 5 (8-innings);
It was back-to-school night on Monday at the James Edgar Playground. The playoff-bound Hawkeye Athletic Club got a pre-postseason test against Brockton Post 35. And a young Post 35 team got a “learning experience” facing a playoff team to conclude its season. The grades will be high for entertainment in a game that featured a little bit of everything, as Brockton and the Hawkeye played to a 5-5 tie in An American Leagion Zone 10 matchup. The game was called after eight innings because of darkness. Hawkeye ended the season tied with Plymouth Post 40 for seventh place in Zone 10, but Hawkeye won the tiebreaker, having defeated Post 40 in their two encounters. Hawkeye will be the seventh seed in the Zone 10 playoffs and will face second-seeded Hingham Post 120 for the second consecutive year in a best-of-three series. Hawkeye won the series in three games last year. Game 1 is scheduled for today at 5:30 p.m. at Hingham.
“Brockton is a good program,” said Hawkeye coach Rich Cogliano. “They had a few bad breaks this year. They had been in the playoffs for a long time and we knew that we were going to be in a great game with them.” Said Brockton coach Dave Seriopian, whose team finished 6-13-1: “We will have seven of our nine starters coming back. We will build through our youth program. This was a learning experience, because we played against a big strong playoff team. “I am proud of the way that we played. They are a young baseball team and they play hard. The kids love baseball, they were down working on the field and getting it ready at 10 this morning.” Both teams got solid pitching as the Hawkeye combination of Zac Cooney and Matt Newcomb allowed only two earned runs. Brockton’s Matt Sliney pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits and struck out 10.
“Matt did a great job,” said Seropian. “He hurt himself with a couple of walks. He got in trouble and pitched out of jams. Matt pitched tough. His pitch count was high and that is why we took him out.” Sliney got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh inning, but he walked five batters, three of whom went on to score. Mike Marshall blasted a two-run triple after Sliney issued walks to Justin DeAndrade and Newcomb to give Hawkeye a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. “We had some timely hits in the game,” said Cogliano. “Marshall’s double down the right field line was a pretty big hit.”
Brockton took advantage of three Hawkeye errors, two of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Craig Stewart lofted a three-run homer over the left field fence to give Post 35 a 5-3 lead. Stewart finished with four RBI and a sacrifice fly that scored Shane Vanadore in the first inning.
Hawkeye tied the game at 5 with two runs in the sixth inning. Casey DeAndrade (two hits) had an infield single to score Leo Finnegan and he scored on Justin DeAndrade’s long triple to right. Brockton had a chance to win in the eighth as Ryan Young reached third base with no outs, but Newcomb got the next three hitters to end the game.

Wareham 7, Brockton 0;
Wareham Post 220 sends 11 batters to the plate in the first inning to score seven runs then rides the pitching of Tommy Cole the rest of the way in a 7-0 win over Brockton Post 35. The pre-Fourth of July baseball fireworks at James Edgar Playground were short and sweet as far as Wareham’s Post 220 Legion squad was concerned. Wareham took care of business in the first inning by sending 11 batters to the plate and pounding six hits as they scored seven runs then rode the pitching of Tommy Cole the rest of the way in a 7-0 win over Brockton Post 35. “I never saw a team string that many hits like that,” said Brockton Post 35 coach Dave Seropian. “Give them all the credit. They are a good baseball team.”
Wareham coach Keith Delgado was encouraged by his batters’ attentive approach. “I felt that we had not been selective at the plate and were not keeping our hands back,” Delgado said. “I challenged the players to come out and do those things and they answered that challenge in the first inning. “We have to readdress what happened from the first inning on.” Wareham got three doubles in the first inning with two of them driving in five of the seven runs. Chad Snow had a three-run double and Nick Filloramo added a two-run double to go with RBI singles by Ryan Shove and Pat Murphy (two hits). After that rocky start for Brockton (4-7), Bradshaw came in with two outs in the first inning and shut out Wareham(11-5) for the rest of the game. The righthander did the job in keeping Post 220’s aggressive lineup off balance, allowing three hits, striking out five and walking one 61/3 scoreless innings of relief. “He (Bradshaw) did his job and did it quite well,” said Delgado. “He kept us off balance. He had us swinging at tough pitches and breaking pitches and popping it up.” “We have a lot of baseball left,” said Seropian. “These kids learn will learn from this. We have a young squad and the kid on the mound (Bradshaw) has three more years. “The bright spot is that six of the nine starters are going to be here for at least two more years. We are trying to stay competitive and learn from it.” “George Bradshaw came in (relief) and shut the door. We just could not get anything going offensively.”
The reason why Post 35 could not get anything going was Wareham’s Cole, who relied on his fastball to shut down Brockton’s lineup. Cole allowed four hits, struck out five and walked two as he retired the last nine batters he faced in his complete-game win. The righthander was helped out by the flawless play of Murphy at shortstop, who had three putouts and five assists. “The kid (Cole) challenged us with his fastball and showed us his curve ball,” said Seropian “The out pitch was his fastball. He would show you his curve ball, but his big pitch was his fastball. He threw hard and he threw strikes.” “Tommy has come on the last few games,” said Delgado. “He has been throwing strikes and was keeping the ball down. He had plenty of groundball outs.” Brockton’s best chance to score off Cole came in the second inning when Post 35 loaded the bases with two outs. Ryan Young tried to score on a wild pitch, but was tagged out at the plate by Cole, who got a good feed from his catcher.
Whiman 2, Duxbury 1 in Game 1 & Whitman 4, Duxbury 0 in Game 2

Jake Ruoff pitched the 7th for the save. Whitman got a run in the third on a Brendan O'Brien double and a John Bilunas RBI single. Whitman would score the winning run in the sixth when after Greg Donahue walked and advanced to 3rd on an error and a force out, Anthony Glynn would plate him with a suicide squeeze which resulted in a bunt single for the big man.
Game two would be all pitching as well as John Bilunas improved to 4-1 with a four hit shut out. Bilunas would strike out 12 while walking none. Offensively, Whitman would only get five hits but would make the most of them as Bilunas was also the offensive star with two hits and 2 RBI. Anthony Glynn would perform another perfect suicide squeeze to score Bilunas in the 5th and end up on 1st with a bunt single. Greg Donahue and Brendan O'Brien also had hits for Whitman.

After a disappointing start to the season, the Plymouth Post 40 American Legion baseball team needed a confidence booster heading into a hectic final two weeks of the schedule. Plymouth got it with a 7-4 win over Zone 10 foe Middleboro Post 64 Monday night in Middleboro, allowing Post 40 to get back on track towards making a run to attempt to qualify for the Zone 10 playoffs. Plymouth Post 40 head coach Paul Coffin’s team hasn’t quite lived up to its potential yet considering that he has several players from the Plymouth North high school baseball team that made it to the Div. 2 state championship game. “When we’re here, and we’re focusing on the play, we are a good team. We just haven’t showed it yet,” Coffin said of his 3-5 squad. “We’re way behind because of the weather, and we’re way behind because of Plymouth North doing well in the tournament, so we missed that first week of games. “I have a lot of tired people from (Plymouth) North, physically and mentally, and (Plymouth) South sat around and didn’t play for five weeks so we’re trying to get back on track and get people into it and get people playing the way they can play again.” Post 40 flashed its potential in the first inning, taking 1-0 lead on a long sacrifice fly by Joe Flynn to score leadoff hitter Jameson Wood from second base. Middleboro Post 64’s Tyler Horan, a baseball and football standout for BC High who will attend Virginia Tech this fall, would’ve hit what would have been a game-tying home run in the bottom of the first, but with no outfield fence at Middleboro High School’s field, Plymouth’s alert defense forced him to settle for a double and Horan was left stranded.
Middleboro did tie the game in the bottom of the second inning when Brent Lydow doubled to center to score Mike van Ryper. Middleboro then went ahead, 2-1, when Lydow attempted to steal third base and Plymouth third baseman Pat Lane misjudged the pickoff throw, allowing Lydow to score the go-ahead run. Plymouth right fielder Tom MacInness tied it again in the third inning with a double before another double by shortstop Joey Flynn scored MacInness to regain the lead for Plymouth. Flynn stole third and scored on a base hit by catcher Matt Walsh, with Walsh scoring on a sacrifice fly by Sean Kimball to give Plymouth a 5-2 lead. Middleboro made it 5-3 on back-to-back singles by Horan and Jameson Wood and a run-scoring flyout by Nick Bean. Zack Maddigan then entered the game in relief of Middleboro starting pitcher John Wylie in the fourth inning and effectively shut down Plymouth Post 40’s offense until he was relieved with one out in the seventh.
Ryan Coughlin, who took the ball for Maddigan, gave up a two-run double to the second batter he faced, giving Plymouth Post 40 a 7-3 lead. Middleboro closed out the scoring in the bottom of the seventh when Horan scored from first on a single by Nick Bean as Post 64 dropped to 4-8. “We knew we were against a solid team,” Middleboro Post 64 head coach Ron Holmgren said. “Everybody chipped in here and there. I’m proud that the kids were really into the game and they played hard, that’s all you can ask for as a coach. “(At 4-8) we’re close to being out of it, but we’re not giving up,” Holmgren said. “If we can go on a little streak, we’d be right in the thick of things.” Holmgren was pleased with the relief performance of Maddigan, who had four strikeouts while allowing only one hit and no walks in three innings of relief.
“Maddigan had a real good relief performance,” Holmgren said. “He just started. He doesn’t play baseball, he’s a track star for Middleboro, a very good long distance runner. “He played for me a long time ago, he called up wanting to play and I said we’ll work you in, you got to throw some bullpens until your arm gets ready. Hopefully, he’ll work into the rotation.” Due to the many games Plymouth Post 40 missed early in the season because of Plymouth North’s MIAA tournament run and a rainy June, Post 40 will play its final 12 games over the course of the next two weeks before the season ends July 12. “We’re playing every single day with the exception of the Fourth of July,” Coffin said. “So our pitching is going to be tested. “Our pitching rotation is lined up the way we want it, we’ve just got to hit and play (defense).” Horan finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and two base hits in a losing effort for Middleboro.

Bridgewater 7, Hawkeye A.C. 5;
While all nine players have to play well in order to win a baseball game, nine players usually do not account for an entire roster for most teams. Such was not the case for Bridgewater Post 203 Friday afternoon as the squad dressed only nine players in a 7-5 Zone 10 Legion win over Hawkeye Athletic Club at Massasoit Community College. Ryan Gavin was the story for Bridgewater as he earned the victory by allowing two runs in three innings of work on the mound. Gavin also tallied two hits at the plate, drove in a run and scored another from his cleanup spot in the batting order. Because of the lack of players, the southpaw was also forced to play third base once his day on the hill was finished.
“We only had nine guys and four of them were lefties,” said Bridgewater coach Tim Fitzgibbons. “He (Gavin) said that he had played some third (base) in Little League, and we didn’t have much choice.” Gavin left the mound with a 5-2 lead, but Bridgewater was hardly in control of the game. Hawkeye had jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning when the first two batters both reached base and scored. Nick Fedor walked and was driven in by a Justin DeAndrade double a few pitches later. DeAndrade scored when Previte lined a double to the gap in left-center field.While the runs came early for Hawkeye, they did not score again until the fourth inning. “That’s kind of been this team’s pattern all year,” said Hawkeye coach Rich Cogliano. “We tend to score a lot of runs early and then take the middle innings off.”
Bridgewater (5-2) scored all of its runs in the second, third and fourth innings, with the bulk of the damage coming in the third. Bridgewater loaded the bases with a single and two walks, and Brendan Glavin broke the game open with a three-run double. “We were really patient at the plate that inning,” said Fitzgibbons. “We didn’t try to do too much and just took what they gave us. “Fortunately, Glavin was able to come up with the big hit when we needed it.” While Hawkeye (3-2-1) did not score any runs in the middle innings, it certainly had its chances. Hawkeye forced the bases loaded with only one out in the third inning when Gavin started the play of the game. The pitcher fielded a comebacker to the mound and fired the ball home for an out with Bridgewater catcher Dan Belanger taking the throw and firing the ball to first base a half-step ahead of the Hawkeye runner to end the inning unscathed. “That play was huge for us,” admitted Fitzgibbons. “Not only did that keep them off the scoreboard, but it really kept the momentum in our favor.” Bridgewater answered the 1-2-3 double play by scoring two more runs in the top half of the fourth inning to stretch its lead to 7-2.
“They got the timely hits and we didn’t,” said Cogliano. “You can’t beat a good team like that when you don’t have timely hitting.” Hawkeye added a run in the fifth inning to make the score 7-4 on a moon-shot home run by Matt Newcomb. Hawkeye added another run in the sixth inning when Previte drew a bases-loaded walk, but Hawkeye left the tying run on second base to end the threat. Fitzgibbons was happy that his team won without a handful of starters, but he was not surprised. “We have 18 guys on this team that can all play, so as long as we have nine I feel like we have a chance,” he said. “When some one doesn’t show up it’s up to everyone else to step up, and that’s what we did."
Duxbury 4, Pembroke 1;
