Amphibian Assault Vehicles (Amphibian and Triton)

Hitpoints: 4

Movement: 3

Damage: 2

Range: 1

Cost: 3

Special: Can move on both land and water.  Cannot move through trees.

Being the most versatile weapon in MA,amphibians pose a major threat to both ground and naval units.  With their move range of 3 they can be loaded from one transport to another 2 times before reaching a destination where they are needed.  This defines their first duty - coast guards.  A system of transports along the coast with amphs present is the perfect way to make your opponent think hard before even entering your territory with a landing party.  (full transport of these guys can sink 2 transports full of those expensive units of his)

Also nothing feels better than sinking those unprotected Pteronests in one turn, wasting all of the money opponent spent on the planes.  Also good is Naval Transport-Ground Transport-2 Amphs combo for it has a REALLY long reach and can sometimes provide that much needed support nowhere to get otherwise, although they are not often used that way.  One thing to remember - although full Transport of them can destroy ANY unit in MA,it is mostly a one use weapon (like a poisoned dagger in assasin`s hand in a room full of guards). With their health of 4 they are sank pretty fast after they appear on a battlefield.

I like to think of airplanes as an investment.  Up front, it doesn't seem to help you that much for how much it costs.  Each one can only do 1 damage per turn, while for 1$ more, a Rocket Launcher or Heavy Bot will do 3 damage.  But the fact is, well protected planes never die!  That means, over their lifetime, they will do more overall damage than any other unit.

The point to understanding how to use planes is to think of them as a support unit rather than a main assault unit.  They are almost worthless when you are trying to defend a place where you are vastly outnumbered.  Its much better to buy 3 LAVs which will stop the enemy progress for a time.

What planes excell at is cleaning up after other units.  While a Rocket Launcher blast is wasted on a LAV with 1 hp left, 3 planes can take out three weakened units.  They are also great at softening up the tougher enemy units before they reach your lines because of their long range.  You can keep those nasty rocket launchers at bay too.

Because of their price and vulnerability, you must protect your planes.  One easy way to do this is always keep an LAV in a capital with planes... Its like 1$ insurance to keep your 9$ worth of planes alive.  If you don't, you might find an enemy transporting an amphibian clear across the board in one turn.  Even if the enemy manages to destroy the protection, you can always fly your planes to a safer location before they are in danger.

And one more thing: be careful about flying your planes into a newly invaded territory... ask Magistr Honna about his favorite disclosure trick :).

If you have more planes than you can use consider buying a Carrier - that way you'll add mobility to this ground-controlling weapon.
