Marvel Special Editions (1983-85)

During the 1980's, Marvel started reprinting titles on high-quality Baxter paper. I call them all "Special Editions". They were double-sized and quite expensive for the time. The average comic was selling for 60 cents but these were 2 dollars or more. The overall reprint quality, however, is excellent and the stories are top-notch. I highly recommend them.

Some of the comics used glossy paper with modern recoloring. Off the top of head, I think they were Dr. Strange Classics, the Micronauts Special Editions, and X-Men Classics. In any case, I didn't find it particularly obtrusive.

The first ones I picked up were the Warlock Special Editions. Fantasy Masterpieces V2 had reprinted the same stories but they stopped in the middle. I finally got to complete the whole saga and it was great indeed.

I also remember seeing the Kree-Skrull War at a Sav-ons drugstore. After hearing about the K-S War in various Avengers comics, it was joy to actually read the original stories. I had always been a John Buscema fan but his artwork seemed tiny compared to Neal Adams' layouts.

Most of these stories have been reprinted in the Masterworks and I have noted other reprints as well. The Micronauts will probably never be reprinted because of copyright issues, which is quite a shame. Michael Golden should have drawn more Micronauts stories.
