Fantasy Masterpieces Volume 2 (1979): 1-14

Fantasy Masterpieces V2 was a square-bound title that reprinted Silver Surfer (1968) #1-14. Issues 1-7 have four pages cut (the original stories were double-sized, 38-40 pages). Issues 8-11 have two pages cut (the original stories were reduced to the standard 20 pages). Issues 12-14 are complete. The Watcher backup stories were not reprinted.

Stan Lee and John Buscema do the honors here since this was Lee's pet project. I especially like Silver Surfer #4 (Surfer vs. Thor), my favorite Marvel cover. Buscema is great in the first five issues. After that, the art gets a bit rough or maybe it's the inking/coloring. The Silver Surfer starts looking like a ghost.

Even though Fantasy Masterpieces was double-sized and they left out the Watcher backups, there was only room for the Silver Surfer stories. When the Surfer stories returned to the standard length in issue 8, Marvel started including Adam Warlock stories from Strange Tales (1975) and Warlock (1975).

Jim Starlin writes and draws everything. It's very interesting stuff, though a bit dark. I personally think it's better than his earlier Captain Marvel work. The reprint quality isn't the best and they didn't finish the series. Better quality reprints are found in Warlock Special Edition (1982) #1-6, Warlock Limited Series (1992) #1-6, Warlock Masterworks Vol 2 HC, and Warlock by Jim Starlin: The Complete Collection TPB.

Fantasy Masterpieces did not reprint the entire Silver Surfer series. The rest of the stories and complete reprints are available in the Masterworks, Omnibus, and Essentials books.

When I was a kid, I thought these were the greatest comics, mostly because of the art. But now I realize their shortcomings. Don't try reading too many stories at once. If you do, the Surfer's constant whining becomes apparent and annoying.
