OVERACTIVE THYROID...

When I was 12 my dad died suddenly and I was very close to him and the shock of his death brought on a hyperactive thyroid. My symptoms were just awful, I was thin as a rake, could not sit still for a minute, had no concentration, suffered from diarhea all the time had a racing heart with lots of palpitations shaking hands like noones business and the worst symptom for me was the HORRIBLE sweating, and I dont mean normal sweating but EXCESSIVE sweating.....I was on medication which was neomercozole for many years only coming off them for my pregnancies. In 1990 my thyroid gland started to enlarge and wrap itself around my windpipe making it very difficult to breathe and as you can imagine I found this very distressfull. I had surgery to remove most of my thyroid gland and this is called a sub-total thyroidectomy and from that day I have never had any problems. I have read that a lot of patients who have had this operation need medication straight after the surgery to stop the remaining bit of gland going underactive, I have also read of patients who have had this surgery but did not need medication, then going underactive 7 to 10 years down the line and having to go on medication for the rest of their lives. I have been VERY lucky in that I am now into my 16 year post surgery and need no medication and have not gone underactive, I imagine though from what I have read that I am not a common occurance? If there is anyone else like me who has gone a long time after such surgery not needing medication then I would love to hear from you
