What is Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)?
CEA is a disorder of the deep structures of the eye that affects collie breeds around the world.
The four main changes are:
· Inadequate development of the Choroid, a thin layer of blood vessels that delivers oxygen and nutrients to the retina (called hypoplasia of the choroid or
chorioretinal dysplasia).
· Coloboma - a cleft or defect of the optic disc or adjacent areas.
· Staphyloma - an area of thinning in the sclera which is adjacent to the choroid.
· Retinal Detachment - with or without haemorrhage - a complication associated with the other defects.
Puppy Buyers :
A good breeder will be delighted to give you a copy of the vets eye examination of the puppy allowing you the final and ultimate choice on adding the little wet nose and bundle of fur to your family. You should also know many puppies that are affected mildly have become normal; generally they are classified as go normal on their eye check. Whatever the case may be, they will have a healthy prosperous life span with little to no affect on their daily quality of living. They will still eat, burp and fart, tear up things and pee on the floor, most important** … They still will accept all the love and attention you can possible provide**!!!
Possible genes (one gene from each parent for a total of 2 genes per dog)
a - affected gene (recessive gene)
N - Normal-eyed gene (dominant gene)
Possible combinations (per dog)
NN Normal eyed non-carrier
Na Normal eyed carrier
aa affected dog
If the Sire is affected and the Dam affected = "The entire and whole litter will be affected"
If the Sire is Normal-eyed carrier and the Dam is affected = "The litter results will be 1/2 normal and 1/2 affected"
If the Sire is Normal eyed Non carrier and The Dam is affected, Litter Results = all Normal eyed carriers
If the sire is Normal eyed non carrier and The Dam is a Normal eye carrier Litter Results = 1/2 Normal eye non carriers and 1/2 Normal eye carriers
If the sire is Normal eye carrier and The Dam is also a Normal eye carrier, Litter Results = 1/2 normal eye carriers, 1/4 normal eye non carriers & 1/4 affected
* If the Sire is a normal eye non-carrier and a Dam normal eye non-carrier Litter Results = Normal eye non carriers of the Gene copy
