The Subcontinent Divided

There was rioting between Hindus and Muslims in 1946.1947 the British parliment made a Indian Independence Act so that a war wouldn't start.later the act ended. They spread into two different nations, one was Hindu-dominated India. Pakistan was the other nation with mostly muslims living in it.

The partition made a huge eruption of fighting. Although India and Pakistan each promised religious toleration, distrust and fear. War broke out between Muslims and Hindus.There was more than 500,000 people  died in the war that day.

To escape the war, millions of Muslims fled from India to Pakistan. Also millions of Hindus left Pakistan for India.  Estimated 15 million people migrated to leave the war zone.

 Gandhi refused to celebrate India's independence day because he was tiredof all the violence.The months after he held prayer meeitings across India. At the meetings, he recited things from the Bhagavad- Gita, the Koran,and the Bible.

 Gandhi fell victim to the violence in 1948. A Hindu extremist shot Gandhi because he thought that the Mahatma betrayed his own people.
