Amber Star of Hope is the first series in Marks. It follows the story of Amber, a spunky little street cat who has just initiated the fierce training to become a street fighter for her gang: the East Half Gang. As she grows, she learns more about the city, and more about the gang she lives with - as well as the other groups of animals that are situated around her. Most animals keep to their own kind, but it is rumored that there are cats who can speak the languages of these creatures. Supposedly, there are even cats who have learned the human tongue.

But cats start disappearing, and peril descends upon the East Half Gang. No one seems to know what has caused these vanishings, and gradually the problem begins to effect the other animals of the city. The special cats that are rumored to have the ability to break the language barrier must be sought out, for they are needed to unite the city creatures - the cat gangs, the ravens, the dogs, the rats, the foxes, the raccoons, the birds of prey, and all the others - against their invisible enemy.

This will be an almost impossible task, yet history is known to repeat itself. There are ancient tales of events that are very similar to this current issue. These stories tell of the coming of a marked one among a flood of unnatural death: a creature who learns impossibly fast, who can see the dead, who cannot be killed. Whether these legends are merely exaggerations is unknown, as very few retain knowledge from so long ago. But if they are true, then the marked creature is the brightest hope of overcoming the darkness.
