The Adoption Process

1. Come to the shelter and meet the animals.

2. If you find one you like, fill out an Adoption Application.  If you rent you will need to have written conscent from your landlord.

3. The adoption fee for all of our animals is $30.*  This includes the price of the Rabies shot given to your pet by the veterinarian of your choice.  We also require that your pet be spayed/neutered and you will pay for that when you pick your pet up from the vet's office.  If your pet is an adult we will make an appiontment with the vet and drop the animal off at the vet's office, and you will pick up your pet and pay them for the procedure.  If your pet is too young to have the operation the day you adopt him or her we will still make the appiontment and you sign a form stating that you will have the surgery done.* We will later verify with the vet that the proceedure has been done.

4. You are ready to go, along with an adoption pack, which includes information about your new pet.  If your pet is too young to be spayed/neutered, then you and your pet are ready to go home, if not you may come back to the shelter any time to visit your pet before his or her operation.

*All policies and prices are subject to change.*

Patented Kuranda Dog Beds We have chosen Kuranda dog beds for our boarding facilities because they are so good for our dogs. We still don't have enough for all of our kennels. If you would like to donate a bed so another dog can sleep in proper comfort, please click here.

Our Mission Statement

Welcome to the Marion County Animal Shelter.  At the shelter our mission is to help Marion and Washington Counties control the animal population, as well as provide pets to deserving families.  We also want to educate the community about the on going problem of animal over population, and the importance of having your pet spayed or neutered.

Your Pet is Missing, What do You Do?

If your pet is missing please call or visit the animal shelter right away, we may have your cat or dog.  Many of the animals that come to our shelter look as if they are someone's pet, but they have no identification, such as rabies or ID tags on them, so we have no way of finding the owners.  If your pet has been missing for a few days or even a few hours please contact us to see if they are here.  This will greatly decrease the number of euthanizations in the area, as well as your pet being adopted to someone else.  Remember, if a stray pet is at the Marion County Animal Shelter for more than 5 days the animal becomes property of the shelter, and we do have the right to do what we see fit with that animal.

If you do find your animal at the shelter, there may be a small boarding fee of $5 a day, and you will either have to show proof of a current rabies vaccination, or have to take your animals to the vet as soon as you leave the shelter to get their rabies shot.  Also if your animal has been at the shelter for an extended period of time or if you surrendered your animal to the Shelter and want him/her back, you may be required to have your animal spayed or neutered if they are not already.

Remember that your pets should alway wear their rabies tag attached to a collar, yes even your cats!  It is the law and it will help your pet find their way home.  Also if you tell the shelter to be on the look out for you pet and your pet returns home please be sure to let the shelter staff know.

Farm, Home and Garden Show

The shelter participated in Marion County's Farm, Home and Garden Show for a second year.  We had so much fun and the dogs had a great time.  We had two kennels set up and had at least three dogs in each kennel at all times.  The dog had a blast and the volunteers did too.  The dogs loved beeing out of the shelter and getting to spend more time with their canine companions.  Some of the dogs never stopped playing.  They also enjoyed walks around the warehouse, where they met lots of new people.

Thanks to the show five dogs were adopted, two of whom had been at the shelter since October of 2007!!!!  Some of these dogs may have never been adopted had it not been for that exposure of the Farm, Home and Garden Show and that hard work of our great volunteers.  So Thanks to everyone, and I know the dogs who found new homes thank you too!!!
