SITE UPDATE 3RD OCTOBER 2008

I HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM 2 WEEKS IN SPAIN and HAD A GREAT TIME ON HOLS, GOING TO THE GRAZALEMA MONOGRAFICO B THERE WERE 95 WONDERFUL SPANISH WATER DOGS TO LOOK AT. IT WAS A HUGE ENTRY AND TESTAMONY TO THE INCREASING  ENTHUSIASM FOR THE BREED IN SPAINISH SHOW RINGS. WHAT DID HOWEVER SURPRISE ME WAS THE BRUSHING OF SOME COATS AND STRANGE CLIPPING AND DRESSING OF TAILS. SEAMS THAT EVEN IN SPAIN THE SPANISH CLUB HAVE DIFFICULTY IN POLICING THE BREED STANDARD WHICH ABSOLUTELY STATES THAT THE COAT SHOULD BE OF RUSTIC APPEARANCE AND OFF ONE LENGTH ALL OVER THE BODY FROM 3CM UPWARDS.

HERE IN THE UK SOME NEW OWNERS ARE SHOWING DOGS WITH BRUSHED COATS. THIS PRACTISE HAS TO STOP AND KC JUDGES MUST BE MADE AWARE THAT THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE, AS IT DOES NOT RELECT THE OFFICIAL BREED STANDARD AND SERIOUSLY DETRACTS FROM THE RUSTIC AND NATURAL APPEARANCE OF OUR DOGS.WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT WHEN THE BREED STANDARD HAS BEEN RATIFIED BY THE KC JUDGES WILL BE ABLE TO CORRECT THIS PRACTISE.

NEW OWNERS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DISCUSS ANY QUESTIONS WITH US.

SPANISH ENTRY IN GRAZALEMA FOXY TAIL ABSOLUTELY NOT ACCEPTABLE.

AFTER THE SHOW

I  HAD THE ABSOLUTE PLEASURE OF VISITING ANTONIO'S RANCH WHERE I SATISFIED MY DOG

ANTONIO' DIVING TIP'S

"How Spanish Water Dogs can go under the water "

There must be a reason for this breed being called Water Dog, It has to be something genetic that makes them love the water.

I do believe that all SWD can easily swim, play on and in the water, and I say "play" because all that we do with our SWD can be understood as a game between the owner and the dog. It means that both Mends must be "happy" at the time that they play.

If we want our dogs to do something new for themselves and for us, we must find the right way for them to be trained and not all dogs are exactly the same.

The main thing is to feel confidence, happiness and that special willing for doing anything.

We must begin to play with a hard rubber ball, bone or something that sinks throwing it a few times in land before taking it into the water.

Next step is throwing the rubber bone in a less than a foot deep bath, where it can be easily seen in the water. Most of the dogs get it in the first few tries, if not, please... be patient and try a few more times (it is not good they use their hands).

Once they are used to get their heads under the water, we can go to the next stage and it will be a clear, non deep pool, river, lake, sea... where they can easily stand on their feet. We must be there with them, as close as possible, showing them the ball (bone) as it sinks (for them to see it). They must get it under the water, if they can't, just give it to them, but under the water.

At last, we can go to a deeper place in the river, sea, pool... and help them to retrieve it, of course, in clear water. When they get used to it, we can go to not very clear waters and they will also do it... (I don't think they can smell in the water, they used their eyes and their mouth sense for feeling it).

Any questions are very welcome VIA THIS WEBSITE.

Enjoy your SWD’s

Endoscopic Laser Treatment Case Study

Polly Bond is a 13-year-old Jack Russell Terrier from Eye, in Suffolk, who first came to the Animal Health Trust in 2002 due to lens luxation (displacement of the lens) in both eyes, a condition to which terrier breeds are particularly susceptible. The team of specialist ophthalmologists in the AHT’s Small Animal Clinic performed an operation to remove both lenses, which incredibly still leaves the dogs with some sight. Unfortunately, Polly developed secondary glaucoma, which they tried to treat with medication, but nothing seemed to work. It ultimately necessitated the removal of one eye.

When the remaining eye became affected in March this year, it was time for another trip to the AHT, where the surgical team inserted a tiny titanium implant to help with the drainage. This again was fine for a short while, until the increase in pressure started to cause discomfort and loss of vision.

“The new laser treatment was our final resort,” said Mrs. Bond, and Polly underwent in treatment at the AHT on June 19th this year when the specialist endoscopic laser was being tested. The ophthalmology team thought the terrier would be the perfect case for the new treatment, and kindly paid for the procedure from their Deserving Cases Fund, a kitty where staff donate their out of hours earnings to help pay for animals in vital need of help, but whose owners cannot afford the costs.

The treatment was a tremendous success, and, according to Mrs. Bond, Polly is now a new dog.

“She’s like a puppy again,” she smiled. “The treatment has been marvelous – she’s got her sparkle back. This procedure means she’s not in any pain now and still has some sight remaining. To see her you’d never know she was only partially sighted. She plays, walks and wags her tail as much as a dog with perfect vision! Everyone has really noticed the change in her and I can’t thank the Animal Health Trust enough for everything they’ve done. If the Trust can raise enough money for this equipment it will change the lives of so many dogs. It will be absolutely brilliant!”

THIS IS A CASE STUDY AND A REMARKABLE BREAK THROUGH FOR DOGS SUFFERING FROM THE EFFECTS OF GLAUCOMA

Hi Jenny,
I took this photo of your latest family addition yesterday - I was really taken with her in fact I would say she must have been the best SWD there if I had been the judge - ( sorry - no experience whatsoever in the judging world).
Not just her fantastic SWDbeauty/looks but also her character / temperemant and your successful training was such a pleasure to see. You must be really proud of her or better your family should be very proud of you both.
Cant wait to hear the result of who won the competition - I really enjoyed myself - would like to have stayed over but I had to get back to work today.
Hope to see you one of the days at Di's
Kind regards Lis

Maravilla Ted and Perdi are taking part in this event and would welcome sponsorship they will have to learn to Dive to 1.5 meters and retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool. If you want to help this cause sign our guest book and pledge an amount, all details will be posted on the site as the fund grows. We still need £10,000.......a little goes a long way.

WORKING TRIALS DAY MARCH 23RD 2008

WITH THE

NORTH WEST WORKING TRIALS ASSOCIATION

WE HAVE BEEN HOPING TO GET TO A WORKING TRIALS TRAINING DAY FOR AGES AND AT LAST WE FOUND ONE AND ENTERED.WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY WE HAD DESPITE MUD, FREEZING WEATHER, RAIN AND SLEET!

WE TRAINED PERDI AND TED CATAGORY FOR LARGE DOGS,

THE DOGS HAVE TO CLEAR FROM A SIT A HIGH JUMP 3 FEET/90CM AND LAND TO A CONTROLLED SIT WAIT.

THE SCALE A MIGHTY 6 FEET WALL FROM A STAND TO LAND AND SIT ON THE OTHER SIDE THEN RETURN BACK OVER THE WALL ON COMMAND.

WE AIR SEARCHED WITH A TWO OBJECT RETRIEVE WITHIN A 25 FOOT SQUARE AND LEARNED NOSE SENTING CALLED TRACKING. FINALLY WE TESTED THE APPTITUDE FOR THE SEND AWAY. QUITE A DAYS TRAINING.

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME FOR BOTH DOGS AND THEY WERE BRILLIANT!

THE TRAINERS HAD NEVER WORKED WITH SPANISH BEFORE AND THEY WERE VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE NATURAL ABILITY OF OUR DOGS.

WE DEFINATELY WANT TO TRAIN AGAIN, THE OBIEDIANCE, DISAPLINE AND ACTIVITY IS A GREAT COMBINATION FOR SWD'S EXERCISING MIND AND BODY.

                                                                                                                                  PERDI YOU POUR THE WINE!!

YOU CAN SEE A VERY TIRED & MUDDY PAT with PERDI AND TED WHOARE QUITE MUDDY TOO!!

the basis of WORKING TRIALS are as follows;

Working Trials The exercises are basically divided into three sections:

     • Nosework
• Agility
   • Control

 Nosework

The dog follows 'a track' – laid by a ‘tracklayer’ (who is a stranger to the dog) walking a set ‘pattern’. The track is approximately half a mile long and laid on grassland, ploughed field or heathland with each competitor working on similar terrain to others in the stake.

As the dog follows the track it has to seek out and recover articles placed along the track by the tracklayer. In UD the track is laid half an hour before the dog works and in TD the track is three hours old. The other component of nosework is ‘search’ where the dog has to search for and retrieve articles placed in a marked area.

Agility

Consisting of a three foot hurdle, six foot scale and nine foot long jump. In the CD and UD stakes, the height and length is reduced depending on the size of the dog:

  • Dogs not exceeding 254mm (10in) at shoulder
  • Dogs not exceeding 381mm (15in) at shoulder
  • Dogs exceeding 381mm (15in) at shoulder

Control

Consisting of heelwork, sendaway, retrieving a dumbbell, down stay, steadiness to gunshot and speak on command. In the PD stake, in addition to the control, agility and nosework exercises, the dog has to quarter the ground for a hidden person, complete a test of courage, escort a person following a search by the handler, detain a running person and perform a recall from a running person. These exercises are completed under strict control and the dog has to qualify Working Dog Excellent before entering the Patrol Dog stake.

Whatever competition you choose, your dog will be a happier pet for being trained

Lis wrote.....

"To Moby and Cote,

Rosita and Anton would like to announce the birth of your grandchildren -  five beautiful puppies born on Sunday 17th - only one day late.

Rosita has had a beautiful white and black male, white and cream male and a beautiful Anton look alike male followed by a gorgeous lookalike Cote bitch and not least (the one who chose to live as I would not give up rubbing and blowing) the surviving golden girl.

Mum is thriving with special attention - lots of fluid and different stimulating food.

We are all a little shocked, as we had Rosita scanned at 5 weeks being told she was not in pup then two days later we told we had two pups and here she is a proud mother of five.

Love from Rosita and Lis"

GUNDOG TRAINING

The Gundog Club News - June 2007

Welcome to the latest update from The Gundog Club.
Bringing information, help, training support and advice to Gundog Owners throughout the UK.

Grade Two Training Courses Have Arrived
Following the great success of our Grade One training courses, launched across the country in March, we are
now pleased to be able to offer Grade Two training courses for retrievers and spaniels in a number of locations.
Grade Two courses will run once a week for six weeks, and will culminate in the Grade Two test. New skills
introduced at Grade Two include the stop whistle and hand signals. Click here to find out more.

Meanwhile, our Grade One courses are more popular than ever. Extra courses have been introduced in a
number of areas, to meet demand. To find out if there is a course running near you, click here. We are putting
together waiting lists in over subscribed areas, so if you don't see what you are looking for, please do call
or email us to see if we can reserve a space for you.

New articles in the reference library
The Gundog Club's online reference library continues to be updated with new articles. The latest training article,
'Beating spaniels' - should they be trained to retrieve? is available to view here. The new health-related feature
for this month is an article on Optigen testing by Natasha Bujnoch of Contender Gundogs. Natasha's article is
available to view here.

Meet The Gundog Club
The Gundog Club will be exhibiting at several events this year. Everyone got soaked at the Surrey Show on
Bank Holiday Monday. Wiltshire assessor Nick Coates was undeterred, and put on a great demonstration
nonetheless. You can read more about the show here. Next up is the CLA Game Fair near Harrogate in July.
This is an ideal opportunity to meet and chat with Gundog Club staff and trainers in person. We will let you
know our stand number at the CLA Game Fair as soon as possible, so that you can find us there.

Puppy Centre and Breeders Centre
The Puppy Centre is now online. New stock such as bowls and cosy bedding can be found listed alongside
popular favorites such as crates, puppy starter kits, puppy-sized collars, leads, dummies, and toys, and the
puppy training guide 'The Right Start'. Everything the new puppy owner needs, all in one place. The Breeders'
centre, following soon, will include veterinary bedding and heat pads, together with discounts on greater
volumes of a number of our more popular products. Both centres will be found in The Gundog Club's online
shop at www.thegundogclub.co.uk/shop

Spaniel Test coming this month
The Grade Three spaniel test is in the final stages of design and should be available to enter this month.
Candidate's handbooks and test entry sheets will be sent out automatically to all households that have
registered a spaniel with The Gundog Club. To register your spaniel click here, or email us to request a free

 POPPY WINS R B I M

TAKEN FROM SWD CLUB BREED NOTES 29TH MAY 2007

On Sunday 27th May The Spanish Water Dog Club held its Annual Breed Match at Wymeswold, Leics. Our judge was Gina Bowers, who has followed the progress of this breed for several years. The match was well attended, giving an entry of 24 dogs and our judge did an excellent job in spite of the limited amount of rubber matting due to being let down at the last minute by a supplier. The day went very well, the rosettes, trophies and prizes looking impressive and colourful on the ‘top table’. Each class winner had a photo taken in front of the Spanish and UK flags and these will be on the Club web site. BIM went to Di Williamson’s Pemontell Sicamoro at Kingsreach (Miguel),the second time he has achieved this, RBIM went to Pia and Liam’s Maravilla Lazarda (Poppy) and BP went to Lynn Napier’s Janamorio Mencia del Josalyn (Tiggi). Well done to those dogs and their owners. Poppy has never ever been shown before and her owners did a sterling job of taking part in a competition for the first time.
Gina Bowers writes: "I was delighted to be asked to judge the Club Match on the 27th May and would like to thank all the committee for their hospitality and all those present for their sporting acceptance of my decisions. It was a pleasure to see how well the breed has progressed in the four years since I first became an enthusiast, even though sadly I do not own a SWD. The Match was well supported and this was really pleasing as so many breeds suffer from apathy at club events of this kind.

Different lengths of coat and varied handling skills made some assessments challenging but presentation was generally good. Despite the small area of matting, movement was good with the springy powerful gait one would expect from this breed. Temperament has certainly improved and most exhibits allowed a proper examination. There were some indications of timidity, which is a pity but no sign of any aggressiveness.

In particular the puppies were very promising, bone and substance well to standard and teeth were overall excellent. My Best Puppy, Janamorio Mencia del Josalyn, was a delight, both standing and moving. She excelled in overall shape, character and expression. Full of confidence and very assured on the move.

I was particularly impressed with the young bitch who won Yearling and Open Bitch, Maravilla Lazarda, and went on to Reserve Best in Match. With more experience she should do very well in show situations. The Open Dog and overall Open Class winner, Pemontell Sicamoro at Kingsreach, was an impressive specimen who I understand had taken BIM before and he certainly deserved this accolade again on the day. In firm, hard muscled condition he moved with drive and standing, conformed so well to the standard.

In the Veteran Class there were some lovely exhibits with the winner, Briarlows Zeta via Lintock, taking my eye for her carriage, substance and good topline with powerful quarters.

I had a very pleasant day and wish the Spanish Water Dog Club every success in their new challenges for 2007/8 and their first shows."

COTE’S CITIZENS ARREST MAY 2007

COTE, IS A HANDSOME, GOLD BOY 7 YEARS OLD, IMPORTED FROM NORTHERN SPAIN IN 2000, A FATHER AND A GRANDDAD TOO!

I WAS OUT WITH MY YOUNGSTER TED AND A FRIEND  WAS LOOKING AFTER COTE FOR THE DAY. WE DECIDED TO MEET AT THE LOCAL PUB FOR A PINT OF REAL ALE AND A BAG OF PORK SCRATCHINGS FOR COTE, AS I DROVE TOWARDS THE PUB I SAW HER AND COTE  WALKING TO THE SUBWAY, SO I DROVE PAST THEM TO THE  PUB CAR PARK AND STARTED TO WALK BACK TO MEET  THEM.

AS I APPROACHED THEM I COULD SEE THAT THEY WERE AGITATED AND COTE WAS LOOKING VERY STERN. I ASKED”WHATS UP” AND SHE TOLD ME THE STORY WHICH HAD HAPPENED ONLY SECOND’S BEFORE WHILST I WAS PARKING THE CAR……

THEY HAD WALKED UNDER THE SUBWAY AND ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH A YOUTH THREW A CAN OF LAGER IN FRONT OF THEM FROM THE TOP OF THE SUBWAY, WHICH EXPLODED AND MADE THEM JUMP, THE YOUTH THEN JUMPED INTO THE SUBWAY, FOLLOWED AT EITHER ENTRANCE BY TWO POLICEMEN. AS THE YOUTH RAN TOWARDS THE EXIT THE POLICE YELLED STOP ! COTE DECIDED TO GO INTO ACTION.HE LUNGED FORWARD AND PINNED THE YOUTH AGAINST THE WALL STOPPING HIM MOVING WHILE THE POLICE GRABBED HIM. MY FRIEND WAS WAS QUITE SHAKEN AND HAD TO HOLD ONTO COTE WHO WAS DOUBLE HIS USUAL STRENTH. THE SECOND POLICE MAN CAME UP AND PATTED COTE SAYING”WHAT A GOOD DOG, YOU ARE SAFE WITH HIM”.

HE WAS A POLICE DOG HANDLER AND HIS DOG WAS IN THE POLICE VAN, HE SIMPLY DID NOT NEED TO GET HIM OUT!!

WHEN ALL WAS QUITE AND THE POLICE HAD DELT WITH THE YOUTH, THE POLICEMAN SAID OFF YOU  GO NOW, TAKE GOOD CARE OF THAT DOG AND THANKS.

THEY BOTH NEEDED A DRINK AFTER THAT!! I MISSED IT ALL, AS ALL THIS EXCITEMENT HAPPENED IN THE TIME IT TOOK ME TO PARK!  I HAD WONDERED WHY THERE WAS A POLICE VAN PARKED UP AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE SUBWAY.

COTE TOOK A WHILE TO CALM DOWN BUT WAS SOON TUCKING INTO HIS PORK SCRATCHING’S.

REMEMBER NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR SWD’S GUARDING INSTINCT OR HIS LOYALTY.
