Our 2006 Surprise

April 23, 2008

On April 23rd, 2008 around 6:15 p.m. Sky did it again.  This time we have a beautiful big chestnut filly.  She has such long legs, unlike lightening, she can't go underneath mom.  Mom & baby are doing great.  She is out of our own Registered Arabian Stallion K C Thunder Din.  Her registered name will be Sky's Thunder Alley, with Alley being her barn name.   Sky's name is Allie's Sky.

May 28th, 2008 - tonight I took Alley's weight & height and she is 148 lbs and 10.1HH.  She is growing like a weed and eating with mom very well already.  Everyone that sees her says she is perfect and that she will be bigger than her 14.2HH mom.  I believe she will too.  The grey mare in the picture is not mom.  She acts like a babysitter when mom is eating and baby wonders!

Its a Colt!

Last year in September I bought Sky.  She is a grade paint/arabian 12 yr old mare.  A month ago or so I took Sky on a trail ride and when we were almost done, she plopped herself down on the ground.  About 2 weeks ago Sky started looking a little "round" in the barrel, so I emailed her previous owner to see if there was a possibility that Sky was in foal.  The previous owner stated not by her stud but that another person that had her earlier had her bred to a black & white paint but that they had thought she came back into heat and so didn't take.

Well, about a week ago, I noticed Sky had some really boney withers and her ribs were showing.  I asked my hubby if he was feeding her right!  I noticed her bag was a bit extended but I kept watching for waxing.  She was as dry as the Sahara!

Sunday morning about 5:30 my husband came into the trailer and said "we have a baby out there".  I didn't believe him and so he said it again.  I jumped out of bed in the camper and got dressed, went outside and sure enough.  I called to my kids that were in tents "I hate to wake you at 6:00 a.m. but we have a new baby!  They all came running.

Well since we had such short notice and thought we had more time, Sky & baby were in with the other 4 horses.  The colt didn't know who his mom was and my bay mare Star thought maybe she could have him!  My hubby led Sky and I was trying to get the foal to follow, got a towel and dried him off and finally my son-in-law picked him up in his arms and carried him out of the pasture.

We got the 2 settled in the round pen and a make-shift fence was put up on one end of the big pasture for the 2 of them.

What a cute surprise and mom & baby are just fine now. There were a few problems with mom at first but all is okay now.  Baby is "running" mom ragged already.

The names we've picked out are Sky's Surprise, Lightening, Hurricane, Outlaw, Renegade, Stowaway, and Felon to mention a few!  I kind of like lightening because we have Star, Thunder, and Sky.

I'll be adding more pics as the colt gets bigger so check back often.  He is just hours old here.

Two weeks old

Here is my little guy at 2 weeks old.  Its either going to be Sky's Surprise or Lightening because he runs circles around Mom.  He's such a cutie.

I finally got a recent picture of Lightening in all his winter glory!  He is as fuzzy as a teddy bear.  So sweet and loveable.  He is just about black.
