Later in the day Olympic and World champion Nicole Cook lifted her 10th National title in the Women's race. Junior championship report, pictures and rider reports from British Cycling here

Sunday's elite race brought in large crowds with Tour de France stars such as Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome, Geriant Thomas and David Millar competing. After the assent of the famous Tumble mountain a select group formed containing many of the key riders, Wiggins and Froome who broke clear on the climb had a 40 second lead over a chasing group of 12 riders, including Cavendish and Kennaugh.

As they entered the six kilometre finishing circuit in Abergavenny that had to be covered 10 times in front of thousands of fans, a split occurred containing the final selection of Kennaugh, Froome, Kristian House, Ian Stannard and Daniel Lloyd. Stannard soon cramped and was dropped leaving Froom, who kept attacking off the front only to be recaptured by the chasing trio. Froome again went once more and it was Kennaugh who went for a long one to chase Froome down and go for the win only for House and Lloyd to pass him with just 60 metres remaining after the Manxman's leg seized up at the final down hill run to the line. Froome finished fourth, Roger Hammond and Cav came over the line together in fifth and sixth. Mark Christian was in the mix throughout the day helping set Kennaugh up for the U23 win, finished an impressive 16th and sixth in the U23 championship. Saxo ank rider Jonny Bellis was still unwell from a bug he picked up at the recent Ster Elektrotoer in Holland, the Manxman retired just after half distance. Photo above: Mark Cavendish on the finishing circuit, U23 champ Peter Kennaugh plus Welshman Luke Rowe and Manxie Mark Christian on the Tumble

" If I didn't go after Froom at the end he would have won, I wasn’t racing for third or second out there – I wanted the win" said a disappointed Kennaugh afterwards. A delighted and somewhat surprised House speaking to Hugh Porter on the podium said "On the finish, I took the risk of waiting until Pete went because I knew he was the fastest guy there. I think he went from so far out, I think he died at the end and I came off his wheel really late. I thought for a second he was going to close the door on me but he didn't do, so good on him for that." Elite report, pictures and rider comments from British Cycling here

Strong Manx Presence at National Road Race

The strongest field ever will line up for Sunday's National Road Race Championships in Abergavenny, Wales this weekend and seven of them will be Manx! 191 riders will race for the red and blue hoops on a white jersey that the winner will be entitled to wear for one year. It would be great to see Mark Cavendish wearing the champion jersey in the forthcoming Tour de France (until he pulls on the green jersey that is) but there will be tough competition from other seasoned pro's such as Bradley Wiggins and David Millar, who both ride for Garmin Slipstream. Teams may well have a big say on who wins the title, some rides will have no team mates whereas Cevelo have four riders and 100% Me boast nine riders. Other local riders in the Elite event on Sunday include Jonny Bellis, Peter Kennaugh,  and Mark Christian. Tim Kennaugh will be one of the riders to watch in the Junior championship that precedes the Women's race on Saturday, Chris Whorrall will also be in contention and Chris Nicholson riding his first National Junior road race will be out to impress. Peter Wins Baby Giro Stage

There was double celebration for the Kennaugh brothers today when 17 year old Tim won Isle of Man Road Championships today. Not to be outdone his elder brother Peter, pictured left in Mountains jersey, who turns 20 tomorrow had an early birthday present when he won the mountainous third stage of the Baby Giro to move up to second overall. Kennaugh was part of a seven man break that sprinted for the line after a tough 166km in the Italian mountains near Lake Garda. The 10 second bonus that came with the win moved Kennaugh up to second place overall with a chance to make further inroads in tomorrow's 25km time trial. The GB rider also consolidated his lead in the Mountains jersey, leads the Points competition and leads the competition for non Italian riders in the 10 day tour for under 27 age competitors. Mark Christian is also competing and has been doing a sterling job for his team leader, Christian came home in 120th place. Baby Giro results

Tim Wins Road Championship

Tim Kennaugh, pictured left, became one of the youngest winners of the Isle of Man Road Championship with an emphatic win in the 73 mile event promoted by the Ellan Vannin CC and sponsored by Capital International. Team Manx Telecom riders Tom Black and Chris Nicholson made the first move of the race gaining a maximum of 30 seconds before they were reeled in, next to go was Greame Hatcher (Manx Viking Whs) who stayed clear for half a lap before he too was brought back to the peleton. It was an attack by Andrew Roche (Pinarello Candi TV) that would be the springboard for Kennaugh's race winning move on the third lap. Kennaugh later said he initally missed the move by Roche and others but managed to chase across where he countered the riders and gained the all important gap. By mid distance of the eight lap race the Manx Telecom rider had gained a lead of 2 minutes 40 seconds and lap on lap his lead would grow. Last time up Bride Hill Kennaugh had a lead of four minutes over Roche who had by now dropped Hatcher, Black, Nicholson and Chris Whorrall (TMT) with the main bunch a further minute back. On the final run in to Ramsey, Kennaugh's hard six hour winter training rides with Cavendish, Bellis and his older brother would pay dividends as he extended his lead to over five minutes at the chequered flag with Roche finishing second and becoming the Senior champion with Whorrall leading the break home for third a further three minutes behind Roche.

The Veteran race was won in fine style by Neil Bellhouse making it a Team Manx Telecom double, just ahead of his break away partner Andy Bell (EVCC) Peter Gage (TMT) who was third. Thomas Mazzone won the Youth championship and Laura Wasley was the Lady champion. Tim Kennaugh also picked up the Junior championship and picked up the impressive Nick Corkill Memorial award. Thanks go out to all the marshals, helpers, sponsors, Ramsey Rugby Club and catering staff. Photo left, the main prize winners

The scratch group certainly out foxed the handicapper tonight and rode very strongly to claw back an extended handicap. Chris Nicholson (Team Manx Telecom) took the honors comfortably in the final gallop from Graeme Hatcher (MVW), Marty Warren (MVW), Tom Black (TMT) and Rob Dooley (MVW) this quintet having broken a few seconds clear in the final kilometer. ‘Chapeau’ to the long markers group who held off the charging peleton until the Cronk on the final lap with Messrs Crossley (MVW), Beattie (EVCC), and Wilson (TMT) gritting their teeth into a headwind down the Jurby Coast Road John Turner (EVCC) having being dropped a little earlier. Pete Gage carries the leaders jersey into Round 3 having mashalled this week so defending his lead without competing…could this be crucial to the series result? Mike is now back in good health and riding his bike more than ever. To recognise all the great work and support that these three facilities provided Mike during his care and recovery, Mike has decided  to give something back and raise some funds for these great charities. Mike has decided to do a charity bike ride around the world famous 37¾ mile Isle of Man TT Course and will take part in the Colin Nelson Memorial Mountain Time Trial on May 24 2009. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Mike can be contacted on 493394 or by downloading the sponsorship form

Fastest juvenile was George Doyle (RL360). Results

Chris Whorrall (MRC) won opening round of the Bikestyle Series on Thursday night. Organiser Steve Shimmin report follows: Great race, handicap not too bad for a first attempt this year. Chris Whorral timed his sprint to perfection although seasoned campaigner Peter Gage (MRC) nearly beat him to the line when Chris sat up and celebrated perhaps a little early. All the groups were really flying with the race coming together on the final circuit. Tim Kennaugh (MRC) had a few attempts to break away but was foiled each time by the fast moving bunch. Good to see Andrew Roche (EV) in the field riding with a cracked bone in his shoulder.

The younger riders are becoming ever stronger and prominent making the older generations, notably Richard Fletcher (EV) and Gary Hinds (MVW) suffer on the road. Thanks to all for entering it’s going to be a great series. Peter Gage takes the Series Leader Jersey into round 2 next week as Chris Whorral was a single event entry. The handicaps will be altered slightly. If anyone feels that they have been positioned incorrectly please contact Steve. Photos - Results

Cav in the Pink

Columbia Highroad won the opening stage of the 100th Giro d' Italia today. After a strong performance in the team time trial, Cavendish's team beat rivals Garmin by six seconds. Cav was the first rider to cross the finish line which meant he would be the proud wearer of the famous pink jerset for Sunday's 156km road stage to Trieste.

Cav spoke highly of his team mates at the press conference afterwards, the first British rider to pull on the leaders jersey of the Giro said “There's only one pink jersey and it's has to go on someone's back. The team let me cross the line first because I live in Italy and it's special for me. That's a great thing,” Cav went on to say “I'm wearing the jersey for the whole team. It's a team time trial and it just happened that someone had to cross the line first. If there were nine maglia rosa we could all wear them but there's only one, so I'll wear it for whole team tomorrow. If I win tomorrow, then I can enjoy the gratification of being the first British wearer.”

Cav's Book - Boy Racer

Mark Cavendish's much awaited book Boy Racer is now available to pre-order. As the product description says "Boy Racer" steps behind the scenes of the Tour de France. It unmasks the exotic, contradictory, hysterical and brutal world of professional cycling from the compellingly candid viewpoint of someone right in the thick of it. Written off as 'fat' and 'useless' in his youth, Mark Cavendish is now cycling's brightest star. His extraordinary quadruple stage-win at last year's Tour (de France) proved him Britain's best ever cyclist. Some have called him cocky, but to anyone who doesn't like his style, Mark will simply shrug his shoulders and reply, 'I know I'm good. There's no point lying about it.' Peers say that they have never seen anyone with Cavendish's hunger for success and while this fearlessness, both in the saddle and on the record, has at times led to controversy, it has also earned him the respect of ever more fans. In "Boy Racer", we follow him through the mayhem of the Tour de France in a page-turning journey of pure exhilaration. Released on June 4,  pre order here

Peter Dibben Wins Youth Tour (British Cycling report and pictures here)

Hargroves Cycles rider Peter Dibben produced a strong ride throughout the three stages to win the Isle of Man Youth Tour. Dibben won the opening prologue time trial on Friday evening, finished second on the tough second stage on the Peel course on Saturday and finished safely in the peleton after 100 km of racing on the Bride circuit to take a well deserved win. Second place went to Alexander King (Twickenham CC) thanks to a stage win on Saturday. Team Isle of Man rider Tim Kennaugh finished third overall after he also featured in the decisive break on the Peel course with Dibben and King. The top three proved their consistency and improvement as King placed fourth, Kennaugh fifth and Dibbensixth in the 2008 edition.

The Team competition was won by the Glendene CC team and the points winner was George Atkins (Webster’s Cycles)

Kennaugh’s  Team Isle of Man – Microgaming team mate Chris Nicholson returned to form by finishing a promising  11th overall after featuring well during the road stages, Chris Whorrall who rode in Manx Road Club colours finished 40th overall with Jonathan Cregeen (TIOM) finishing a further nine places behind in 49th

The Youth A race would go to the wire with Owain Doull (Wales) holding a slender lead of just two  seconds over Josh Papworth (Wyre Forest)  going into the final stage at Ramsey. The final six laps would prove to be a real nail biter with breaks forming all the time. Papworth played his cards early forcing a break that had to be closed during the final lap by the yellow jersey holder, but Doull left it to late as Papworth did just enough by finishing fourth behind stage winner Dan Whelan (Liverpool Century) to take the overall win.

Debut Team Isle of Man – Microgaming riders Warwick Sanderson and Thomas Mazzone finished 17th and 18th respectfully after both had plucky rides with Sanderson shining on the tough Ellerslie course on Saturday and Mazzone who figured in his home turf at Ramsey. George Doyle also rode consistently to finish 22nd , Jack Wolsencroft came home in 35th and Alex Haddock finishing 39th after he had an impressive spill on Saturday. Junior girl Alicia Corlett (Manx Mountain Bike Club) hung in there well and finished in 39th competing with the Youth A Boy’s.

There were overall wins for Lucy Garner (Leicestershire RC) in the Youth A girls, Jacob Reagan (Sport City Velo) in the Youth B Boys. Newport Velo’s Amy Hill won the Youth B girls, Leighton Sharmon (Eastlands Velo) won the Youth C boys, Megan Barker (Maindy Flyers) won the C girls.

In the younger categories there were wins for Thomas Mein (Hetton Hawkes CC) and Jessica Roberts  (Towy Riders) in the Youth D and the Youth E winners were Adam Scarffe and Elizabeth Cain both of the Royal London 360.

Over £500 raised during Prize Presentation

What is probably the biggest post event get together for a British race, the Villa Marina was packed full of competitors, officials, supporters, parents and coaches where race sponsors Sleepwell Hotels put on a fantastic meal for those in attendance. Isle of Man's superstar, Milan Sanremo winner and four time Tour de France stage winner, Mark Cavendish and World and Olympic road champion Nicole Cooke donated signed jerseys that raised £530 which will be equally distributed to their chosen charities, Craig's Heartstrong Foundation and Action Medical Research

Isle of Man Youth Tour this Weekend

One of the best ever entries line up for this weekend’s Sleepwell Hotels sponsored Isle of Man Youth Tour.
The junior category looks particularly strong with what appears to be one of the best junior fields to assemble on British roads this year. British Cycling’s Olympic Development Programme riders will take on strong Dutch and Irish teams, the Isle of Man- Microgaming team will be out in force as will the Glendene CC team, a club that has been partly instrumental with the development of Manx riders such as Peter Kennaugh, Jonny Bellis and Mark Christian, all past Youth Tour riders. With regional and club team’s also fielding strong riders, this year’s Tour should prove very interesting and difficult to predict a winner, although three riders who finished in the top six in 2008 return, Alexander King (4th in 2008) Tim Kennaugh (5th) and Peter Dibben (6th)

As well as the junior event, a counting round of the national junior road series, there will be stiff competition amongst the youth riders, also a national round of the youth series with racing on closed roads right through the age categories.
The race commences on Friday evening with a prologue time trial on Douglas promenade in front of the race sponsors hotels where many of the competitors will be staying. On Saturday the junior riders compete on a testing 100km road course in the west of the Island, a stage that often proves decisive. In the afternoon all youth categories tackle the hilly Ellerslie course on closed roads.

On Sunday, the juniors race on a new course to the event, another 100km stage, again with a taxing climb in it before finishing on Ramsey promenade where the youth riders will compete in the afternoon.

Bikestyle 10 (Updated with results)

Andrew Roche won the latest round of the Bikestyle sponsored 10 league, Tom Black was second. Top junior was Colum O'Shea, leading veteran was Juan Kinley, juvenile George Doyle, lady Laura Wasley and lady veteran Mary Mason.  Thanks to Colum O'Shea's computer skills in the Creg after the event we managed to obtain some results, however, Colum isn't switched on all the time, after his old man beat him in last week's 10 things just couldn't get worse...but they did, Colum forgot to turn at the turn during last night's event, all is not lost, he does have the consolation of clocking the fastest 11 mile time trial this year! Adam Johnson also forgot to turn but asked me not to mention it! Results -  Some photos from last night here

Rochie's Tour of the West

Ellan Vannin member Andrew Roche once again proved to be the dominant rider on the Island after winning the Tour of the West on Sunday. The 64 mile race started in sunny but cold conditions and after a few unsuccessful flurries it would be strong men Roche, plus Graeme Hatcher and Marty Warren (both Manx Viking Whs)  who would shape the outcome of the five lap race by breaking clear early on in the event. With a lap remaining Roche pressed on to take the win from second placed Hatcher who finished 2 minutes 52 seconds behind the CandiTV-Marshalls Pasta rider. Warren came home a further further 2 minutes 30 seconds back to finish third. Tom Black (MRC) escaped the bunch to claim fourth with Steve 'Bubbles' Williams (MVW) taking the frantic bunch gallop for fifth. Cav just got the better of German Cervélo Test Team rider Heinrich Haussler, who opened up a 10 metre gap during the sprint only for the Manxman to edge it,  Norway's Thor Hushovd was a 'distant' third at two seconds. Cav not only displayed his sprinting powers yet again but he also proved the sceptics wrong with his ever improving climbing talents on the tough Cipressa and Poggio climbs that only end with six kilometres to the finish. On Hauslers late burst Cav said "I was quite surprised to see him go. I was lucky I got him on the line." Picture Tim De Waele Cevelo Missed it? Then click here

Simpson easily beat French rider Raymond Poulidor on the Via Roma with Willy Bocklandt finishing third one minute back. Report and pictures on Simpson's win here

Manx Team Retain British Madison Title

Last year it was Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh, this year Kennaugh teamed up with Mark Christian, pictured left, to win the title for the Isle of Man again!

With Rob Hayles pulling out at the last minute Kennaugh's Manx Road Club and British Academy team mate Christian slotted in as a late replacment to good effect. Pre race favorites Geraint Thomas and Welsh team mate Luke Rowe had built up a four point lead by mid distance. Commentator Hugh Porter said it was more like a Commonwealth Games event with the Isle of Man and Wales dominating proceedings, such was the intensity of the racing that would see competitors average over 33 mph for the 50km 200 lap event it would prove difficult for the leading contenders to gain a lap. Kennaugh and Christian gained half a lap at one point before being pegged back by their closest rivals, they did pick up an important five points for their efforts though to put them right back in contention and so it would prove with Team Isle of Man duo taking the title. Full report and pictures on British Cycling

Nicholson Third in Future Stars

Another Manx Road Club up and coming star Chris Nicholson finished third overall in the season long Future Stars competition at the Revolution series. The Future Stars competition has been the breeding ground for future stardom. Cav made sure this time by winning the sprint by a bike length at the end of the longest stage into Passo Robles. Boonan spoke afterwards about Cav's win. "I was on Mark's wheel and the guy just kept speeding up, it was impossible to pass him," Boonen said. "If Mark starts his sprint under perfect conditions like he did today then it's almost impossible to pass him."

Levi Leipheimer remains in the lead for tomorrow's big time trial. Although Leipheimer looks strong the time trail stars such as Michael Rogers, David Zabriskie and Lance Armstrong will be looking to make inroads on the leader.

John Walls

Manx Road Club long serving member John Walls has sadly passed away. Jonny, who lived in Port Soderick then Castletown for most of his 86 years was a great character in Manx cycling circles, often recognised by his cycling attire that consisted of a knitted jumper,  trousers tucked into his socks and a race cap with the peak turned up Norman Wisdom style. It was Jonny who taught me, as a keen 14 year old Ballasalla cyclist, how to climb, he would often take me over the Colby, Sloc and Dalby climbs, sometimes in one ride!. There were many funny times with Jonny, but the one that sticks in my mind, be it true or Manx cycling folklore, was when his mother found his birth certificate only to discover that he was older than he actually believed he was, Jonny was said to be delighted about the discovery because it gave him a bigger advantage in the age related handicap in time trialing! Our thoughts go to John's family. Peter kennaugh

Jonny's funeral takes place at 2pm on Wednesday January 7 at St Mary's RC Church, Castletown followed by interment at Malew Churchyard. The photograph taken at the last running of the Castletown Kermesse in 2003 is Jonny, the oldest member  of the MRC with some of the youngest members
