Heat Interview

Way back at the beginning of The X Factor, G4 appeared to be the complete outsiders. Yet last Saturday they stood on stage alongside smoothie Steve in the grand final. Their quirky barbershop style, sharp suits and twinkly eyes (Jonathan's in particular) won them a legion of fans of all ages. We caught up with them to reflect on what has been the craziest sixth months of their lives.

What's Louis like to have as a manager?
Matt:
He's really good at being objective. Sometimes it's quite annoying as he changes things at the last minute, but what he says makes sense.
Mike: He's picked ten Number Ones for Westlife so he knows what he's talking about.

Were Sharon and Simon particularly nice to you?
Jonathan:
Sharon is nice all the time and even though Simon can be harsh on the show, he's far nicer when he's off-camera.

Were you offended by anything they said?
J:
Not offended, but we were a bit disheartened that we didn't get an opinion from Simon for the last few weeks - he chickened out. It's made me think a bit less of him.

Jonathan, you spoke back to Simon several times on the show...
J:
Yes. We were just there to sing, but to talk back to someone in front of millions of people is nerve-wracking. But getting your point across is really quite exhilarating.

Was there really any romance with you lot and Voices With Soul?
Ben:
No, we were just mates. We haven't had time for romance. The pressure of the contest has been so intense.

Do you have girlfriends?
Matt:
I'm the only one who does.

Have the rest of you pulled more since being on TV?
Mike:
You get to talk to hundreds more people so there's more opportunities.
J: But we've not had a chance to meet anyone properly, to be honest. Maybe that will come afterwards.

Have you ever tried to woo a lady by singing to her?
J:
No, but when previous girlfriends have come to concerts I have sung in their direction. It usually makes them go bright red.
Matt: One of the reasons that I got together with my girlfriend was because she liked my voice. And many other things, of course

Jonathan, you cried as you revealed that your mum was ill during one show. What was wrong with her?
J:
It came out quite badly actually. I didn't realise until I saw it back that it implied that she was very, very ill. She had the flu and that morning she'd called up and sounded awful and I found it really hard that she couldn't make it to the show that night.

Did you feel bad about how it came across?
J:
Yes. Lots of people were asking after her and I felt terrible and was like, "Oh, what have I set off now?"

Are you embarrassed about crying on live TV?
J:
Totally. It's all really embarrassing. When Steve was feeling emotional he would leave the stage and shed his tears in private. the whole of our group shed a few tears on the show, but unfortunately the cameras latched onto me. but it was really nice for people to see us showing genuine emotion.

Jonathan, there has been talk about you going solo...
J:
I know. People always seem to want to split groups up before they've even started. Things have been focused towards me as a bit of a front man at the moment, but G4 is definately a group effort and we all work very hard. I'd like us to stay a group for as long as possible.

Jonathan, you admitted you were bullied at school for being spotty and your singing. is the success good payback for the bullies?
J:
Oh, it's lovely payback. To be ridiculed for my singing and then achieve this is brilliant.

Mike, is it true you moo like a cow to warm up for shows?
Mike:
I do. [Does an amazing cow impression.] It's a technical exercise, but it's becoming more of a party trick now. I'm going to start charging soon.

Who is the poshest member of the group and why?
Matt:
Mike. He says things in a really posh way, like theatre is th-eeeee-a-tre.
Mike: it's the way my family pronounce it.

Do you wish you'd released your album before Il Divo became successful?
Matt:
No, I think we're really different to them.
J: It's like comparing two totally different rock groups. Look at McFly and Busted - they've managed to work in the same market. It's just good to know there's a market out their for our kind of music.

Who would you have picked to win the show at the start?
Matt:
Tabby, because he's a genuinely nice guy.
B: Voices With Soul are absolutely lovely and tabby has got real talent. They would both be very good additions to the charts.

How did you choose what to sing in the final?
J:
We didn't take any risks and went for stuff that we knew people would enjoy.
B: We didn't even dare consider what to sing until we knew for absolute sure that we were in the final. Then we popped into Louis' dressing room and decided literally in a matter of minutes.

What kind of people do you think voted for you?
Mike:
I think we had every age group covered. I don't mean that in a cocky way, but when we were busking, we would have all ages of people coming up to us and I think it's the same with the show.

What was the best moment of the whole thing?
Mike:
Going out on stage every week was a fantastic buzz.
B: It's such a rush to think that millions of people had been voting and loads of them liked what we did each week. We never expected to get through the first audition when we started back in the summer - not in a million years. Also, we thought that once we were in the bottom two on the show it would be hard for us to be able to progress. So it was amazing to bounce back.

What was the toughest moment of the whole thing?
B:
eeing Voices With Soul leave. We were all very emotional about that.

How are you all feeling now the whole thing is over?
Matt:
I'm relieved, but I will miss it. Hopefully we'll be moving on to some new and exciting things.
B: We're elated that we've done so well and I'm sure once it all settles down we'll have time to relax and reflect on what an incredible experience it's been.

What does the future hold?
B: Our dream is to make an album. That's what we've been working towards.
Mike: And that's what will make all of the hard work worth it.
