Curious to know what it was like living on Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1994, before the hype? Come along with me and experience how I lived above O'Sheas, in a one-bedroom apartment with 3 other guys, worked at Respectable Street Cafe, and bicycled the streets. Experience my life in this entertaining journal. Danielle, a friend from those days, found the journal online, read it, then e-mailed me, saying that it moved her to tears. She suggested I publish it. So, here it is. Thank you, Danielle.

screenplay

In my off-hours from delivering pizzas at Papa John's in downtown
West Palm Beach, Florida, I wrote this screenplay. How did I do it?
I checked out ten or twelve library books on screenwriting, then
read them while writing story notes. It took one full year of writing
notes, revisions, storyboards, synopsis, treatments, and step outlines
before finally finishing this semi-autobiographical script. Gina, my
sister-in-law, said it was hilarious and reminded her of "Napolean
Dynamite".
That's a nice compliment. I hope to see it on film one day.

musical

While living at the Unarmed Underground Art Centre
(UUAC), an artists work/live space, and keeping a journal
about the interesting people, I thought it would be neat
to write a play about this, and
call it "Plato's Cave",
about a group of misfit philosophical types
share space
inside an artists community. I wrote some notes on this,
then put them aside to devote time to other projects --
the FLO, Philosophy Nite, Refuge Coffeehouse, Cinema
Refuse', FLO Film Fest. Around this time, I
met a group
of kids in Lake Worth who dumpster dived, and was
introduced to this unique activity. Soon, I began dumpster diving myself.
Inspired to capture this energy, I thought: What if I take the
ideas of "Plato's
Cave", a story about fringe characters, and turn them into dumpster divers
in a world where dumpster diving will soon be illegal?
Feeling enthusiastic about
this, I started writing down ideas and notes for this. I think
I think this was in
2001. After a year, maybe less, I put it down to complete other projects.
Every
year-or-so, God would give me a song that seemed to fit
into the musical. In 2006,
while renting a tiny (6' x 10') room
in Burlington, Vermont, in the winter months,
I began a serious
effort to finish the entire script. Some months later, the script
was
complete in it's rough draft. The following year, I went
to Florida, got a free room
to live in with a therapist friend
who was excited about giving me a free space to
stay in
order to put the musical's songs to a digital recorder.
(Major thanks to
Terry Gamble, therapist, and Marcus
Barrameda, mixer.) Later on, friend
and artist Ana Torlen
helped me revise the second act, and I began auditions
for the musical with dumpster divers from an activist house
nearby. Although
enthusiastic, they were heavily involved in
political causes and due to their
activities, often had court
appearances, so eventually, the auditions stopped.
For now
I'm looking for a stage/venue to produce this musical, volunteer
actors and actresses, musicians, and crew. Be part of something
bigger
than yourself. Let's hatch this egg and see what comes out!

I started in 2003 to raise awareness of, and support for,
the persecuted church, christians suffering overseas in
countries where persecution is commonplace. This book
features lyrics and bar chords to the songs of OOTW.
Use this to put on an OOTW presentation at your
church. Help make a difference for eternity.
