Welcome

Welcome to AP US History. The purpose of this course is to increase your understanding of United States History while building the knowledge and skills you will need to pass the AP Examination.   This course will be different than any course you have previously taken because this course is taught at the college level (unless, of course, you have taken a college class).  The major difference between a high school and college history course is the amount of reading and depth of focus, as well as your responsibility for the content.  AP curriculum stresses higher order thinking skills within a rigorous academic context. Thus, you will be required frequently to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate primary and secondary historical sources in addition to comprehending and applying facts. The areas of concentration include historical, political and economic history coupled with an intense study of cultural and intellectual institutions and their development. These areas will be studied from a variety of perspectives with the hope of providing a balanced view of history.  I am looking forward to working with you this year!

Course Information

Syllabus09.doc

The primary challenge you will face this year is the pace of the course, the reading, and the level of difficulty in the exams and essays. In the past you have been given information that you must know and apply.  In this course, you must read for content and in class we will work with the knowledge you have gained from the text.   If you fall behind in the reading you will find it is very difficult to catch up.  It will hurt your grade as well as your chances of passing the exam at the end of the year. You will find this class moves as a fast pace, approximately one 30-40 pg. chapter a week.  Because we have so much information to cover, we will not be spending a lot of time on any one unit.  For example, we cover the Civil War in 2 days!  If you do not understand the material, you MUST come to tutorial for help.  Study groups are also helpful.  In addition, much like a college course, you grade will be based primarily on your assessment scores, with an increase in value as the year progresses and you become more used to the format and what is asked of you.  Read the "Advice to next year" from my student's last year; they went through the same thing you are going to go through.  While their advice may not seem relevant right now, should you choose to heed it, you will be thankful.

Advice to Next Year

Handwriting: make it legible

Turnitin.  We will set up accounts and the beginning of the year.  You will be required to submit your introductory assignment terms to turnitin.com  All take home essays must be submitted to turnitin.com. If your submitted paper shows up as more than 30% taken from other sources, you will receive no credit for the assignment and it may result in a referral.

Problem submitting? The most common error is forgetting to have an extension on your document.

Title: terms(incorrect) terms.doc(correct) please try this before saying it doesn't work.  If you do not have Word, you will need to cut and paste it into the body of an email and send it to yourself.  When you come to school, you will need to open your email, cut and paste it into a word doc and submit.

Late Work: No Late Work. Don't forget your work at home.

Make-Up Work: Reading assignments, terms and test dates are posted at least 2 weeks and often one month in advance; therefore, you are still responsible for them even if you are absent. If you are absent the day of an assessment, you have one week to make up any quizzes, tests or essays.  It is your responsibility to make arrangements for make-up.  For extended absences you must make arrangements. It is your responsibility to make arrangements; you will not be reminded.  Did I mention you have one week, and it is your responsibility?  Failure to do so will result in a zero.

Grades: Your grade is made up of notes, terms, reading quizzes, and assessments. Second term you will have the option of an assessment only grade which will be discussed at that time.  30% Unit Exams, 30% Weekly Reading Quizzes, 10% Essays and 30% Work.  I will be collecting one set of notes and one set of terms per chapter.  Each class will be randomly given the chapter to turn in on the day of the Unit Exam.  All work MUST be brought on the day of the Unit Exam.  Do not forget your work at home.  Work will NOT be accepted late.

Tutorial will be offered for every unit exam.  Check the calendar for tutorial days.  Appointments can be made for individual or small group tutorials after school (sorry-no lunch tutorials), but please make arrangements in advance.  I will make every effort to help you, but it is your responsibility to ask for help if you need it.

Assignments: All quizzes and unit exam dates will be posted on this site.   Any handouts I can, I will post online as well.

Texts

Textbook:
Henretta, Brody, and Dumenil. America's History: 6th Edition. New York, NY 2008.
Recommended Review Book:
Newman, John J. and John M. Schmalbach.  United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examaniation . Amsco. New York, New York. 2004.

Other review books will work.  I like this one because it summarizes the material in a simple and easy to understand manner. I will be taking orders for review books in late fall; they cost $18.  Should you have problems comprehending the textbook, I strongly suggest buying the review book.
