You can reach me at About Mr. Bates I have been teaching since 1973, a fact that never ceases to humble and amaze me. All but eight of those 36 years have been spent in Snohomish where I grew up. There have been times over the years Over the years I have combined my love of mountaineering with my love of writing. The result has been two books, pictured on the page, and a number of articles that have appeared in magazines and newspapers. English is my passion,and it is my hope that during the year each of my students will tap into their writing, reading and thinking selves and produce something of lasting value, something they will be proud to share with family, friends and relatives at the end of the year at our Night of Readings. when I have felt like a utility baseball player, teaching everything from science and math (let's keep that a secret) to drama, public speaking, yearbook, journalism, History, P.E. and outdoor education. I have also taught Outward Bound courses in the Oregon and Washington Cascades and served as a senior editor at Falcon Press.
