World of Maccy Tamryn

Bleddy 'ell, visitors! I 'ope you idn't emmits.

I am Macdonald Tamryn, fellow of the Duchy of Cornwall, young man of Camelann Parish. Once upon a time, not so long ago, I read a book, a memoir. A memoir is a record of one’s achievements and far too occasionally, certainly in my own case so far, under-achievements. Life’s ups and downs in a nut-shell! A personal potted history. A close-encounter without actually meeting.

That famous old book begins: “If anybody cares to read a simple tale told simply.” I will try and tell my story in a similar way. It is possible I won’t be able to emulate the exploits of that old book’s narrator, John Ridd. 'Girt' John Ridd was a giant of a man. He could carry a full-grown ewe under each arm, a champion heavy-weight wrestler, an expert shot with a flintlock rifle. John rid the Exmoor lands of murderous outlaws, was once a fugitive from one of the Mad Kings. Eventually he was knighted by the monarch for services to his country. John was not much older than I am now, at the height of his wild times. We two may be physically alike. I could maybe manage a pair of new-born lambs. I know I would drop them both through clumsiness. I don’t see any other comparisons, nor ever expect to rise to such lofty heights.  Anyway, I’m still just a kid, a teenage tearaway. I haven’t yet done a great deal of note.

PS Maccy Tamry and his exploits and quaint use of the Queens English has recently been discussed on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
