The Song of the Lioness Quartet: The Alanna Books
Overall summary: The Song of the Lioness quartet is, as I have said, about Alanna of Trebond (later of Oluo and Pirate's Swoop). She and her twin switch places and she goes through knight training while predending to be male (women are not allowed to be knights). The first book is about her years as a page, the second about her years as squire to Prince Jonathan of Tortall, and the last two take place after she is knighted.
Alanna: The First Adventure: This is the first book in the Song of the Lioness Quartet. As is said in the title, this is the begining of Alanna's adventures. The begining of her journey to captivate readers of all ages. In this book she and her twin Thom switch places and Alanna becomes a page known as the small boy, Alan. Thom goes to learn to be a mage. Alanna is reluctant to accept the prince Johnathan and his friends, all older pages and squires, as her friends, but soon learns to accept them. Lots of stuff happens (I can't tell you though can I? I'd ruin the books.) Oh, she also meets George Cooper, the king of the rogues in Tortall, also known as the Rogue and they become friends. He teaches her how to defend herself and introduces some of the pages and squires (those that she can trust) to him.
In The Hand of the Goddess: In the second SotL book, Alanna becomes a squire and begins to learn how to love. She comtinues to learn to fight and visit George. I can't say too much, both because I'll end up giving away important stuff and not be able to stop typing, and because I haven't read them in a while.
The Woman Who Rides Like a Man: The third book continues to astound and captivate readers. Alanna has been knighted and has killed her worst enemy. Now what? She and her companion, Coram, ride to the south for the winter. By complete accident she becomes a legend to the tribal people of the south of Tortall and becomes known to them as The Woman Who Rides Like a Man. This book is as amazing as the rest. In TWWRLaM, Alanna continues to learn about life. She learns of the unfairness and how many, both men and women, hate change and think of women as lesser. She comes closer to both Jon and George in this book and the question is raised: who will win the Lioness? Goerge, Jon, or someone else?
Lioness Rampant: Ah, the last Alanna book, but of course, not the last Tortall book. Roger, Alanna's worst enemy has been brought back from the dead by Thom. Roger looks normal, as if he had never been dead, but Thom looks like he has just been brought back from the dead. Will he survive his own experiment? And why is his gift red-orange now, instead of purple? All these questions along with the one about George or Jon are answered in this amazing conclusion to TSotL quartet. Realy exciting.
The Immortals Quartet: The Daine Books
Overall sumary: The Immortals books take place after The Song of the Lioness and before Protector of the Small. Daine is a young woman who has no family. She works for the horsemistress for the Riders in Tortall. She has strong wildmagic and must be tought how to use and controle it. These four books are the story of her journey to find out who her father was and to help Tortall and her newfound friends. She discovers that there is a place in the world for her, and she must fight to protect it.
Protector of the Small Quartet: The Kel Books
Overall sumary:The Protector of the Small quartet is about Keladry of Mindelan. She is the first girl to try for knighthood since a law has been passed allowing women to be knights. The books are First Test, Page, Squire, and Lady Knight. These are my personal favorites. Keladry, also known as Kel, has lived in the Yamani Islands for much of her life. At the age of ten she has returned to Tortall with her parents and wishes to try for knighthood. She makes some friends and enemies (as do Alanna and Daine). She becomes friends with Nealan of Queen'scove and Cleon of Kennan, and learns to avoid Joren of Stonemountain and his friends.
Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen: The Aly Books
Overall sumary: Trickster's Chioce and Trickser's Queen are about Alanna's daughter, Alainne, also called Aly. It wants to be a spy like her father, but her parents want her to do something else, but she doesn't want to. She has a fight with her mother and goes sailing alone on her boat, the Cub. She gets cought by pirates and sold, well given (they couldn't get anyone to buy her), as a slave. Then she makes a wager with the Trickster, Kiprioth that she can keep the children of the household alive through the summer. If she wins she gets to go home by way the gods travel, and if she wins, if she's still alive, she has to serve him for a year. She meets many strange characters, including Nawat, a crow turned man. At the end of Trickster's Choice she decides to stay with the girls and help with the plot to make them rulers. The second book, Trickster's Queen reveals many interesting things, which I shall not ruin for you.
The Cirlcle of Magic
The Circle of Magic and Circle Opens books are about Briar Moss, Daja, Sandry, and Tris, four young mages with unusual magic. Briar Moss is a plant mage, Daja is a metalworking mage, Sandry's magic commands thread and cloth, and Tris is a weather mage. These books are about their adventures together and with their teachers learning how to use their magic. In the Circle Opens quartet, the four split and go their own ways and the young students end up being teachers. I haven't read all of them. By accident Briar created a living tatoo of a vine in his arm that covers the marks that say that he has been to jail. Daja has a vine of living metal on her arm.
