Lyoko's World

I have the information that you need to be a Code Lyoko fan! (Pokemon too!)

.::.Characters.::. ALERT!! SPOILERS!!

Aelita Hopper/Stones:

Aelita is the younger female in the group and the more naive one of the four, having had comparatively less experience with the real world than her friends. At first thought to be AI within Lyoko, Aelita's former life is slowly explored as the series progresses. She is the daughter of Franz Hopper, the person who designed both the supercomputer and XANA. She manages to settle into her new life by the start of the third season, making more jokes and generally being less naive in such matters. She also become noticeably more daring and brave, reflected in her combat skills after this point.

Aelita wears two different outfits, changing from one to the other over the transition from the first season to the second. The first outfit consists of a maroon skirt, yellow shirt and pink jacket (in "The Key", this is shown to be the outfit she was wearing when she was first virtualized).
The second consists of a dark pink jumper dress over a light pink hooded long sleeved shirt and dark pink knee boots.
Her night clothes consist of white socks and an oversized pink t-shirt with a red letter A on the front. It is unknown who gave her this.

Aelita's main interest is music, specifically mixing it, which she has a natural talent for. Her childhood memories show that Franz Hopper taught her to play the piano at an early age. She, like Jeremie, is also a capable programmer and an excellent student, usually assisting Jeremie with the former in her off time. The two also have a close relationship, Aelita having even kissed Jeremie at one point. Unlike Ulrich Stern and Yumi Ishiyama, however, their relationship isn't made as much of an issue, though it's touched upon at certain points.

Synopsis:

As revealed in "XANA Awakens", Jeremie Belpois discovers Aelita asleep within the supercomputer after stumbling upon and reactivating it. Aelita, knowing nothing of her past, is nicknamed "Maya" (possibly after the computer software used to create 3D graphics) by Jeremie as a placeholder. She later remembers her name after it's spelled out on the tower interface screen.

Throughout the first season, Aelita is stuck in Lyoko, the program necessary to materialize her still in development by Jeremie. She serves as an early warning system of XANA's attacks, detecting the pulsations from XANA's activated and relaying the information to Jeremie. The two talk about the real world at great length whenever they have the chance. At the end of the first season, Aelita is finally materialized, but her time on Earth is short as XANA takes measures to make sure she remains linked to the supercomputer. Jeremie eventually develops a scanning program that removes the need for her to remain there.

During the first two seasons, Aelita's connection to Lyoko also serves as a has a handicap. Since bringing her to Earth requires a special materialization program used while inside a neutral tower, Aelita would die if she lost all of her life points, adding an extra plot element to the standard "get Aelita to the tower" motif. With the restoration of Aelita's memories at the end of the second season, this handicap is removed.

After Jeremie finishes his materialization program and completes the super-scanner program, Aelita is able to live on Earth on a permanent basis. She enrolls Kadic under the assumed name of Aelita Stones, Odd Della Robbia's cousin from Canada.

After this point, a few episodes touch upon her relationship, namely his stubbornness and lack of understanding in regards to her interests. He always manages to put things right by the end of such episodes, however.

Near the end of the second season, Aelita learns about her past life, having had visions of it throughout the season. though initially disturbed at the thought that Franz basically stole her entire life, his sacrifice of his own life to revive her at the end of the season drives her to find him once more.

Powers and Abilities:

On Lyoko, Aelita's outfit consists of a pink mini skirt and a matching top that go over pants and a long shirt that are both off-white, with maroon gaiters that wrap around them, and matching shoes. She also has elf-like ears, with a small dangle earring in the left one. Aelita's Lyoko ID card has a pink Eye of XANA on the back. For long-distance travel, she usually rides with one of her friends, but uses any available vehicle when alone.

In the fourth season, Aelita receives a new pink form-fitting suit on Lyoko, in addition to a transparent skirt and other similarly transparent adornments. The suit has a pair of retractable, angelic energy wings, enabling Aelita to fly; she simply has to wave her hand over the star-shaped bracelet she wears to create them. However, if she takes damage during flight, the wings disappear.

Aelita's weapon on Lyoko are her "energy fields", energy orbs created in the palms of her hands capable of destroying any monster on contact. The orbs cover a target with energy on contact (hence the name) to destroy it, regardless of where they strike. It is also capable of shattering even the elliptical laser of a Megatank in two hits. The drawback is their creation, which takes several seconds. Aelita can also amplify the effect into a single massive energy orb, which is powerful but exhausting to use. Additionally, Aelita can create a makeshift shield by forming an energy orb in each hand and mixing their energies. The shield, while powerful, has a very small surface area and takes precision aim to block attacks.

Aelita's main purpose is to deactivate the towers activated by XANA, stopping his attacks in the real world. She accomplishes this by accessing the interface at the top of the tower and entering the code "Lyoko", which shuts the tower down.

Aelita's skill on Lyoko is that of spontaneous generation or destruction of matter, referred to as "creativity" (in the episode "Rock Bottom"). Using this power, Aelita can create anything she wants on Lyoko, or remove sections of land, though doing so costs half of her life points for each use. Her power is normally used to create barriers or other such surface features to stall the advance of monsters. She can also create simple clones of herself or others. The clones possess no will of their own and have a limited range of movement, basically only running in a straight line, but are nigh-indestructible. She also possesses some sort of second sense which allows her to see the landscape of Lyoko when invisible, as seen in "Attack of the Zombies", but it seems to be ineffective by "Tip-Top Shape".

Franz Hopper

Description

Franz Hopper was a science teacher at Kadic Junior High School about ten years before the series starts. He is the one responsible for creating the supercomputer that controls the virtual world of Lyoko, as well as XANA.

Franz Hopper is a genius beyond his time, as implied by Jeremie when referring to the information in his diary. The supercomputer and XANA are clearly more advanced than anything else on Earth, and Franz Hopper developed and built the two on his own. He also created the time-traveling aspect of the supercomputer, though he admits this to be an interesting side-effect of the supercomputer and not intentional.

Near the end of the second season, Franz Hopper is revealed to be trapped within Lyoko. He can reach out to the real world through the use of the towers, which glow white when he activates them. He doesn't have abilities equivalent to XANA, but can overcome XANA's control of a tower. In the last two episodes of the season, he is revealed to be Aelita's father, simultaneously revealing her to be human and not an AI within Lyoko. At the climax of the last episode of the second season, he seemingly gives his life to save Aelita, who was left for dead by XANA after he had stolen her remaining memories. However, he manages to survive that to some extent, as Aelita and Jeremie discover in the following season.

History

The group first learns of Franz Hopper in the episode "Unchartered Territory". Jeremie discovered his name when digging into the history of the Hermitage (by hacking into a website which held the deed to the house). Further exploration of the house revealed an out-of-place book on the Punic Wars. It was this book that allowed Jeremie to discover the password to Carthage, after much thought into the meaning of the message given by the sector. The sewer passage behind the house was discovered in the previous episode.

In the episode "Mister Pück", after Aelita's visions become too disruptive to ignore, the group went to the Hermitage to discover their source. The visions eventually led Aelita to a picture on the wall. Behind the picture was a small space that contained a doll, which Aelita inexplicably knew to be named Mister Pück. A key to a train station locker was hidden on this doll. The locker contained Franz Hopper's diary, which was heavily encoded on a set of CDs.

In the episode "Franz Hopper", XANA impersonates Franz Hopper with a polymorphic clone in order to get rid of Jeremie and his friends. Though XANA was able to turn Jeremie's friends against him by making him look inexperienced and incompetent, mainly through diagnosing Yumi with a fatal neural condition. Jeremie was able to oust the fake when it mentioned Franz Hopper's diary being destroyed, something they had never mentioned to the clone and the real Franz couldn't possibly have known. At the end of the episode, he revealed that the real Franz Hopper was actually trapped somewhere on Lyoko. Where in Lyoko was not specifically stated.

In the episode "Contact", Sissi was possessed by a ghost, but did not act as normal XANA-possessed people do. Instead, she began speaking in gibberish (backwards speech, to be specific). After multiple attempts to tell Jeremie something, Jeremie finally realizes that she is being possessed by someone other than XANA. Upon investigating Lyoko, they find a white tower, which XANA immediately begins attacks. XANA also attempts to kill Sissi. Despite XANA's efforts, Sissi manages to get the entire message through, revealing the source of the message to be Franz Hopper.

In the episode "Revelation", Franz Hopper's diary was finally decoded, with a little help from Franz himself. His diary revealed the true origin of the supercomputer, as well as his relation to Aelita. After discovering that Aelita had her memories stolen by XANA, the group goes on a mission to retrieve it in "The Key". Franz Hopper helps them through their mission, but it ultimately ends up a failure. The memories Aelita finds are in fact fake, placed there by XANA to isolate her so it could steal her remaining memories. After XANA succeeds, Franz comes to his daughter's aid, restoring all of her memories. This seemingly costs him his own life. However, a scan of information in Carthage revealed that a fragment of Hopper's DNA was on Lyoko, indicating that he is alive and that there is a chance for him to be materialized.

Through flashbacks during the restoration, it is revealed that Franz Hopper used to live in the mountains with both Aelita and his wife. After her apparent death, they moved to the Hermitage and Hopper began working on the supercomputer, which he had built to counter a military project known as Project Carthage, which was designed to disrupt enemy communications. Images in the credits show that Franz Hopper was working on this project in the early seventies. After inadvertently discovering the time travel capacity of the supercomputer, he used it 2546 times (about eleven days less than seven years) to repeat the same date (June 6, 1994), hoping to gain enough time to complete his work. His diary shows that he became mentally unbalanced during this time and developed paranoia. After being discovered by the government, he took Aelita with him to Lyoko.

In the episode "Aelita", more details on Franz and Aelita's initial trip to Lyoko are revealed in several flashbacks. When they first arrived in the Forest sector, Franz, having taken the form of a cluster of energy spheres, told Aelita to take shelter in a nearby tower while Franz arranged to speak with XANA about letting them stay on Lyoko. XANA, however, did not accept, and had a swarm of Hornets attack Franz. When Aelita came out to see what was happening, Franz told her to return to the tower while he prepared to shut down the supercomputer, thus resulting in Lyoko's ten years of inactivity. Before the shutdown, Franz Hopper's final words to his daughter was that she never forget him. Near the end of the episode, Aelita, having gone into Carthage in the hopes of finding her father's whereabouts, takes some data from the interface. During the search, Jeremie manages to find a fragment of Hopper's DNA, thus confirming that he could still be alive somewhere. Although they still have no clue where he may be, the knowledge that her father is still alive gives Aelita a sense of hope.

In the third season finale "Final Round", XANA succeeded in deleting Lyoko by possessing William Dunbar and having him destroy Lyoko's core. Though Jeremie had found Franz during the battle and attempted to recover him, he did not succeed in doing so. At the end of the episode, however, Jeremie receives a message directly from the Internet, holding information on how to recreate Lyoko sector-by-sector, signed by Franz Hopper himself.

Jeremie Belpois:

Description

Jeremie is the brains of the group (as he is occasionally called "Einstein" and "brainiac"), and is thus the de facto leader of the team. He is 13 years old (after the episode "Franz Hopper"), in grade 9, 4.82' tall, and weighs 68.3 kilo grams. (I know, scary...)

On Earth, Jeremie wears a light blue turtleneck sweater and khaki capris. He also has blue shoes and round glasses. He wears dark blue pajamas when he goes to sleep.

Jeremie has never been seen on Lyoko in a 3-D virtual form (he appears in a 2-D virtual form in the episode "Ghost Channel"), though he does have one. Both Odd and Ulrich described his appearance as "ridiculous". Jeremie swore never to go back after first testing the form, and the only reason he went was to ensure he would never be taken over by XANA again, so he may never be seen in it. Currently, the symbol on the back of Jeremie's Lyoko ID card has not been seen. The front of his ID card is simply a picture of his regular, 2-D face, and has a different color scheme than the others.

Discussion:

Jeremie is attracted to Aelita despite her initially assumed virtual nature, finding her innocence charming. This attraction is reciprocated by Aelita. In fact, when she is materialized on Earth (in the episodes "Code: Earth" and "False Start"), he even starts romancing her.

Jeremie can be very overprotective of Aelita, which sometimes annoys and angers her. In "Déjà Vu", he asked her to stay put so he could escort her to the factory. She responded by saying she was capable of going there by herself. There are also numerous smaller incidents when he tried to keep her out of danger despite the consequences it would have for others. Also, his position as leader can sometimes go to his head, making him rather stubborn, untrusting of others, and impulsive. For example, in "Temptation" he is unwilling to listen to anyone else with regards to the return trips, though this was due in part to his irritability from using the return trips to increase his intelligence. In "Déjà Vu", he orders Aelita to hand over the interface controls to him. When she doesn't, he orders Ulrich and Yumi to drag Aelita out of Carthage out of concern for her safety. They don't comply, of course, instead dealing with the Mantas while she searches through the interface.

The affection that Jeremie feels for Aelita, despite it being of good intentions, can sometimes cloud his thinking and judgement. For example, in the episode "The Girl of the Dreams", a girl named Taelia that looks just like Aelita when materialized showed up in class. Jeremie was convinced, wrongly, that she was Aelita. Aelita had been trapped within a Guardian the entire time, which prevented communication between her and the rest of the group. Taelia was rude and mouthy (referring to Jeremie's and Odd's comments about Lyoko as "pick-up lines"), and ended up calling the police on Jeremie after he took her to the factory. Aelita was able to deactivate the tower and trigger a return trip before the cops could drag him away. Afterwards, Jeremie tried to act like he had never mistaken the two in the first place.

Despite the encouragement from his father and the rest of the group, Jeremie may be somewhat lacking in self-confidence, especially when his participation in physical education is concerned. In "Temptation", he built a machine designed to increase his intelligence, even though he's already quite intelligent. In the first season, he told Aelita (several times) that he wonders if he's really "up to the job" (referring to her materialization program). She reassured him that he was.

Skills

Jeremie acts as the coordinator for the group, planning their missions and dealing with any unexpected bugs that might pop up. From the terminal in the lab, he can monitor their progress in Lyoko and warn them of any incoming threats. In a continuing effort to shut down XANA, Jeremie uses most of his free time to find a way to free Aelita from the supercomputer.

In the second season, he creates vehicles that enable faster travel in Lyoko, as well give a tactical advantage to those piloting them. He worked on an anti-virus to remove Aelita's link to the supercomputer so the group could finally shut down the supercomputer and end XANA's threat to the real world.

Jeremie is the only one that is fully-versed in all the supercomputer's functions (probably due to his innate skill in using it). Aelita has a similar amount of training, but is not nearly as capable with it as he is. The other three have taken over Jeremie's position temporarily, with less than spectacular results. Almost every incident featured some unforeseen problem. Ulrich, however, has activated two return trips without any trouble. The first time he used Jeremie's manual. He was guided over the phone by Jeremie the second time.

Jeremie's experience in Lyoko is limited. In the episode "Frontier", he tried to enter Lyoko to apologize to Aelita in person for a recent fight they had. Yumi ran the supercomputer to send him there, but made a data capture error and trapped him in a virtual limbo. He was eventually rescued through the combined efforts of the group. In "Ghost Channel", he successfully entered Lyoko to rescue Odd, Ulrich, and Yumi from captivity by XANA, but he appeared as he does in the real world. Finally, in "Mister Pück", he entered Lyoko in order to build up some resistance to XANA's possessing ghosts. He was never actually shown inside Lyoko in this case, but his performance there was suggested to be nothing special, as it is implied that he had trouble with a pair of Megatanks. After this trip, he swore never to return to Lyoko, citing the fact that he'd "never be able to hack it." His appearance in Lyoko was described by Odd and Ulrich to be "ridiculous."

Jeremie's experiments
(they didn't go so well...)

The first Marabounta, surrounded by the spheres it created.

In the second season, Jeremie has used information from Franz Hopper's diary and some of the more powerful functions of the supercomputer to do various experiments. Because of his lack of experience and the complicated nature of the information in the diary, his experiments often backfired and caused problems for the group.

His first experiment was the Marabounta, which was created with information from Franz Hopper's diary. It was meant to help the group fight XANA. It worked well at first, devouring every one of XANA's monsters with lethal efficiency. Unfortunately, it negated its own usefulness when it detected Aelita's link to the supercomputer and mistook her for one of XANA's monsters. When Odd fired upon it to save her, it went haywire and tried to devour all of Lyoko, starting with the Forest. XANA had to help them destroy it, though it was only concerned because it needed Aelita's memories.

The second experiment he tried was a device he built that increases intelligence with each return trip (according to a video diary made by him that Aelita hacked into). It worked, but negated its own usefulness by making him careless. It also made him irritable and almost hateful towards his friends, even Aelita. His carelessness caused him to do all of his calculations incorrectly, making his progress worthless. It also caused physical and mental damage with repeated use. This manifested itself as a recurring dream in which Jeremie was walking, then running, down a long white corridor. As he ran, darkness began to engulf the hallway, eventually covering everything in sight, except for a white flash of light at the end of the corridor. It eventually left him in a sleep-like state, due to the damage to his mind. It was only through Yumi's pleading that he found a way out of the darkness and woke up from his dream. After the ordeal, he destroys the machine and swears off using the diary, knowing that its mysteries are beyond his understanding.

In another experiment, Jeremie learned how to activate towers like XANA. His activated towers turn green instead of XANA's trademark red. He can use these to create ghosts similar to XANA's. The ghosts he creates increase the abilities of those they possess but don't control them. Forced to test this ahead of schedule due to the possessed Yolande Perraudin, the school nurse, kidnapping Aelita, he tested it on Odd, who volunteered. This was actually his most successful experiment, but he lost control of it to XANA after a short time. Once XANA had control of it, it reversed the ghost's effect to cause it to drain all of Odd's energy, which would have resulted in Odd's death had Aelita not deactivated the tower in time.

In the episode "Revelation", Jeremie activated another tower in an attempt to decipher Franz Hopper's diary. XANA had planned for this, and replaced Odd with a polymorphic clone. The clone was then sent to Lyoko. As the tower deciphered the data, XANA attempted to take it over. XANA's attempt combined with the sheer volume of data being deciphered caused the system to lock, leaving Aelita and Jeremie unable to stop the process. On top of that, the tower was still linked to the restricted access portion of the supercomputer. If XANA succeeded in taking it over, not only would the diary be deleted, but all the data pertaining to the outfits, weapons, skills, vehicles, and the materialization program would be deleted, too. The polymorphic clone managed to devirtualize Yumi, but was then defeated by Ulrich. Ulrich was then devirtualized by a Tarantula. It seemed as if XANA would succeed, but Franz Hopper took over the tower to prevent that from happening. Franz's taking over of the tower also enabled Jeremie to complete the decoding of his diary.

Jeremie ran two more experiments in the third season to further benefit the team. The first experiment was in "Triple Trouble". Jeremie programmed the ability to teleport for Odd who was, at the time, complaining over his lack of special powers. While the ability proved successful, it left copies of Odd in the places where he teleported from. After trying it twice, Jeremie devirtualized Odd to go over what went wrong, but ended up devirtualizing his clones as well, leaving the group with a total of three Odds. Jeremie later recombined them through virtualization. Although he later fixed the program after a return trip, Odd decided against Jeremie readding the ability, believing himself to be strong enough.

In "Nobody in Particular" Jeremie had begun working on a program that would enable the gang to virtualize into Carthage directly. On his first run of the program, Ulrich was sent to test the program, but a bug in the procedure left Ulrich's mind in a noncorporeal form while his body was sent to Lyoko and possessed by XANA. It was later recovered through the scanners. After XANA finished deleting all four sectors of Lyoko in "Double Trouble", Jeremie had finally perfected the program and was able to send the group to Carthage directly in "Final Round". Unfortunately, the destruction of Sector 5 and the realm of Lyoko proved this to be a temporary success until Carthage's recreation.

Since then, Jeremie has continued to run more experiments in restoring Lyoko, but has continued working with the towers. By the episode "Opening Act" he manages to restore every sector to working order. In the episode "Double Take", he created a clone of himself so that he could avoid getting in trouble with his teachers for missing classes and would have time to work on fixing Lyoko. However, the clone possessed a few flaws in its character, actually trying to romance Yumi. The clone was later taken over by XANA after a struggle between Jeremie and the possessed William over control of the tower that created the clone. Jeremie would later create a clone of William to keep Jim and Principal Delmas from being suspicious of what happened to William. Like the clone before him, that clone also had flaws, such as a lack of basic comprehension (In "Wreck Room", when interviewed by Milly and Tamiya about how winning his election to the Kadic recreational room supervisor was a good example of democracy, he responds with, "Democracies? Who's he? I thought it was me who won this time.") and was basically an idiot in most regards.

In addition to the use of the towers, Jeremie has also found a way to fight off XANA's control of the towers by using energy from Carthage.

In "Skidbladnir", Jeremie and Aelita had also began working on a virtual submarine that would allow the gang to track XANA in the Digital Void. After phase one (the actual creation of the ship), the group had until four o' clock the following day to launch it, otherwise it would collapse into itself. It almost did, but the ship was finished and the group christened it Skidbladnir.

Odd Della-Robbia

Description:

Odd Della Robbia is the jokester and prankster of the group, acting less serious and more carefree than the others in any given situation. While Odd is fond of his own jokes, few others are. This attitude extends to most forms of danger, which Odd only seems to take seriously when responsible for the welfare of others. While Odd doesn't appear to be a serious student, he maintains a 75% average, apparently aided by high art scores as well as his propensity to copy the papers of others during those tests he actually attempts to pass. During his free time, he prefers to work on music, film, drawing, and other forms of art, as well as skateboarding.

Compared to his friends, Odd seems to be the most enthusiastic and energetic, being the one who's been to Lyoko most often and seems to get sincere enjoyment from putting his life on the line there. In the first episode, "Teddygozilla," he jumped at the opportunity to take a solo mission to Lyoko, despite Jeremie's insistence that it would be too dangerous.

Odd carefree personality extends to his clothing, consisting of a long-sleeve shirt and bellbottom pants, both of which are different shades of purple. He wears gold shoes and a gold belt that matches the color of his hair. His hair is styled into a large point in the same fashion as his hair on Lyoko, which Odd purposefully copied after first travelling there (when he first arrived at Kadic, his hair was originally slicked back in a neo-hippie/surfer hairstyle). He also has a purple stripe on the front of his hair (which is naturally that color, as seen in both "Unchartered Territory" and "Revelation"). His night clothes, on the other hand, are red and orange. The shirt has a picture of Kiwi on it.

Odd has a pet dog named Kiwi, which he keeps in his room against school policy. Despite the rule against dogs, most of the students know Odd has the dog. It would seem that only the teachers are unaware of Kiwi's existence. Jim seems to know (or suspects) that the dog exists, but has never been able to prove it without a return trip taking place. Odd also shares a room with Ulrich. The others have their own rooms or live at home. This occasionally results in arguments between the two on roommate-related issues.

Odd considers himself to be something of a ladies' man, having managed to date almost every (similarly aged) girl at the school in the two years he's been attending it, sometimes two at a time. As one would expect, such behavior in the school's small population eventually backfires on him; every girl at school knows (either through gossip or first-hand experience) about Odd, as well as some of his less flattering traits, namely his terrible foot odor.

A running gag in regards to Odd is his paradoxical figure when compared to his gluttony. Despite eating two or three portions at every meal, Odd never gains weight or height, being the shortest member of the group, which is somewhat disguised by his platform shoes and hairstyle. The school nurse attributes this to Odd's high metabolism. As part of the gag, other characters will refer to him as "scrawny", which he will invariably reply to by insisting that he's "svelte".

Powers and abilities

On Lyoko, Odd is dressed, as he describes it, as a "giant purple cat." The outfit is almost identical to the one he wears in the real world color-wise, but has no sleeves and is generally closer-fitting. It also has knee pads and long gloves that go past his elbows. To complete the "giant cat" motif, Odd only has four fingers on Lyoko, complete with claws, though they are bigger than normal and positioned in such a way that it does not affect his ability to hold objects. His ID card also has a paw print on the back. His changed outfit in the fourth season is virtually identical to the previous one, aside from being slimmer with slightly altered highlights. He also has cat ears to complete his cat-like appearance.

For faster travel in Lyoko, Odd uses the Overboard, a hovering skateboard. It's capable of flight and is easily the most maneuverable of the three vehicles. A pair of rockets are mounted on the underside of the board for quick boosts of speed. It is also unusual among the three vehicles as Odd is apparently able to control it remotely. The board will frequently return to Odd of its own accord or otherwise exhibit controlled movement without Odd visibly directing it to do so. Neither Ulrich's Overbike or Yumi's Overwing have demonstrated such an ability, though Jeremie does direct the Overwing's movement on at least one occasion.

Odd's main weapons on Lyoko are his "Laser Arrows", miniature spearheads fired from his gloves near the wrist. They are designed for long-range attacks, being fast moving but requiring precise aim due to their size. They usually fly in a straight line, but Odd has shown the ability to curve their flight path in the episode "Amnesia." The amount of arrows held in each glove vary between seasons. In the first season, the gloves only hold ten or twenty at a time, requiring Odd to be conservative with his shots. In the second season, Jeremie upgrades the gloves to hold 10,000 arrows each, removing this weakness.

For defense, Odd can create a shield over his chest by raising an arm. The shield absorbs any laser fire, but it doesn't cover Odd's entire body, allowing monsters to strike his legs or head. Odd also has limited precognition in the first season, referred to as "Future Flash", but the ability is replaced by the shield in the second season. This is retroactively explained in the third season episode "Triple Trouble", where Odd notes that it was lost during the reprogramming of their abilities and never restored because it was "useless". Odd does use the shield accidentally in the prequel episode "XANA Awakens", suggesting a continuity error on the writer's part.

Aside from his Lyoko-given abilities, is a capable athlete, particularly where climbing is concerned. Combined his claws, Odd can climb almost any surface fairly quickly, and can even hang upside-down from the underside of platforms to perform sneak attacks. The claws can also dig into monsters, but it doesn't cause them any harm (aside from some pain). Like Yumi, Odd uses various flips to dodge attacks. To fit with his cat-like appearance, Odd also runs on all fours like a cat much of the time. Finally, Odd is a capable fighter, but more in terms of street fighting than martial arts, evidenced when he gets into a boxing match with a Creeper in "Franz Hopper".

Description

Elisabeth is the only daughter of Jean-Pierre Delmas, who is the principal of Kadic Junior High School. She is 13 years old, in grade 9, 5.33' tall, and weighs 110.2 pounds. She prefers to go by nickname Sissi, as she doesn't like her real name. She is currently in the 9th grade (as of "Final Mix" and onwards), though she and the other characters appeared to be in the 7th grade in XANA Awakens (as Hiroki, Milly, and Tamiya are nowhere to be seen).

She mostly wears an attachable dark red skirt (seen detached in "Tip-Top Shape", revealing that underneath, she wears a belt around her pants) over darker red pants (that appear purple in some episodes), and a pink, puffy-sleeved crop top shirt with a heart on it that exposes her midriff. She also wears platform shoes which make her taller and a yellow headband around her head. Even without the headband on, Sissi appears to have a widow's peak hairline. She also wears gold, loop-shaped earrings. She has other clothes that she considers to be "in" clothes, as hinted by Tamiya in the episode "Big Bug". She also wears pink pajamas with white lace on the legs and silk sleeves. During the dance in "Teddygozilla", she wears a less-formal outfit. Her hair was also longer, and styled into curls and ringlets. She also has several fur clothes in her closet that we see, but she almost never wears. For PE class and Silat practice with Ulrich (she, too, is skilled in the art and possesses great knowledge of various techniques), she wears her gym clothes most of the time. She has black hair that occasionally increases and/or decreases itself in length during several episodic scenes.

In the prequel to the show, XANA Awakens, Sissi initially goes to the factory (with Odd) on his first trip there, but when XANA attacked her for the first time, she becomes concerned and worried for her friends' safety, and tells Jim and her father about the factory and the threat that XANA poses to the safety of Earth. After her father orders Jeremie and the others to have the supercomputer shut down, Jeremie activates their first Return Trip, making it so Sissi had never gone to the factory in the first place. As she had never entered Lyoko, the Return Trip erased all her memories of the visit, and their rejection is what caused her to be mean around the group ever since.

Discussion

Being the principal's daughter grants Sissi something akin to a free reign at Kadic, since she can convince her father to let her and other people get away with things that they normally wouldn't, though there are a few exceptions, such as the cell phone protest in "Satellite". The group has often had to rely on her as either a distraction or a tool of manipulation over the principal.

Sissi, in a way typical of snooty popular girls, has a superiority complex and considers herself to be the prettiest girl at Kadic (she says so directly several times over the course of the series); she has a dressing table (complete with stage mirror) and lots of cosmetics in her room to compliment this, though her perfume choice has been once referred to by Odd as "cheap" as heard in "Image Problem". She also has won several beauty contests as well. She harbors unrequited love for Ulrich (he consistently rejects her due to her bratty attitude and snooty demeanor, but she sees it as him playing hard-to-get) and is jealous of Yumi (whom Ulrich is attracted to), which makes Yumi her rival for Ulrich's affection. This leads to tension between them. She was also jealous of Emily for a short while in the episode "Routine", though she does appear to retain her jealousy after the return trip takes place. Her attitude is toned down considerably in the second season, she still wants to know about Lyoko, and she treats Odd with respect occasionally. She has been referred to as a "braindead and a leech, as well" by Ulrich, which is a clear indication that he has never liked her. This is heard in the OVA for Code Lyoko entitled XANA Awakens.

Undoubtedly snobbish, and spoiled (not to mention a control freak, as heard in "Teddygozilla" when she silences the crowd in the auditorium after Ulrich orders everyone to evacuate the area), during the first season, she only rarely showed a more empathic side, acting more like the classic snobby superficial teenage girl than anything else. She also is a bit of a perfectionist, constantly reminding people that she is beautiful, though characters such as Ulrich disagree. Her empathic side usually came out in tense situations but when it did, it showed that she really did have a heart. It especially came out when she was trapped in a room with others. Examples of this are seen in "The Trap" and "Claustrophobia", and to an extent in "Log Book". In the episode "Holiday in the Fog", she admits to Jim that all she wants is to be accepted by Jeremie and the others (this actually happened for a short time in the episode "Ultimatum," when her father was possessed by XANA, and in "Contact" where she herself was possessed by Franz Hopper). This could imply that she suffers from self-created social rejection. Her spoiledness and superiority complex proves to be an obstacle, however, as shown in various episodes. She also has developed a bad reputation among her fellow students at Kadic for being a bully, controller, and an all-around spoiled brat. This bad reputation has also caused Ulrich to ultimately dislike Sissi; however, his dislike for her goes as far back as elementary school, as hinted by Sissi herself in "Marabounta". She mentions this to William when they are at the community pool during what appears to be an off-campus swimming class for physical education. It can also be interpreted that Sissi also suffers from emotional insecurity, likely resulting in her becoming Kadic Junior High's resident snob; this is likely brought on by her father busying himself with work and hardly spending time with her.

During the second season, despite these unfortunate shortcomings, Sissi has softened considerably, and she and the group have been exceptionally civil towards each other; almost friends. Like Jim, Sissi is very suspicious of the group, although she doesn't become as obsessed with this suspicion like he did. She truthfully uses this suspicion to find out the secret, by surreptitiously following them. She, too, has also seen the factory on three occasions, all of which were undone by return trips to erase her memory. She even ended up dating Odd over the Internet in the episode "Déjà Vu", though neither of them were aware of the other's identity. Odd ended up finding out, but Sissi was left in the dark. She seems to be fighting with him a lot less now, however, and vice-versa. She remembers that, though.

Sissi is an aspiring actress, and makes an appearance in nearly every television or movie-themed episode. She is usually in one of Odd's various movies or music videos. In the episode "End of Take", she manages to get a part in the movie being made by James Finson in return for getting the principal to excuse Ulrich from classes. She only has one line and twenty seconds on film, though, since Finson doesn't take her seriously. In "Code: Earth", she is one of many background faces in Odd's music video Break Break Break Dance. Finally, in "Contact", Sissi appears in Odd's latest film, Natural Grandeur, as a giantess.

In William Returns, she is the head writer for the school paper while Milly and Tamiya are her subordinates. Eventually, her so-called "methods" of making a newspaper eventually drive the two sweeties into quitting being reporters altogether after finally being fed up with her bossy attitude. She also becomes the monitor of the newly-built recreation room in "Wreck Room" as well, having been elected the position in that episode by Jeremie and the others after what happened to her and Ulrich on the roof of the dormitories.

Ulrich Stern

Description

Ulrich is the silently-strong introvert of the group. He is 13 years old, in grade 9, 5.12' and weighs 99.2 pounds. Ulrich would seem to be the bravest member of the group, willing to fight off the various creatures and humans XANA possesses and sends after them, despite the rather obvious handicap.

On Earth, Ulrich wears a jersey with a vest over it and he wears cargo pants over his legs, all varying shades of green. In the first season episode "Killer Music," the jersey is shown as a non-sleeved shirt. His shoes are white. At night, he wears a white jersey and green shorts. When he practices Pencak Silat, he wears an outfit that looks like a black tank top with black pants. He's also barefoot when wearing this outfit.

Ulrich's Lyoko attire is somewhat modeled after a samurai. The outfit comes complete with a karate headband and a katana, as well as a drawing of an Oni on the back of the vest. He wears tabi over his feet. The back of Ulrich's Lyoko ID card shows three round symbols believed to be stylized chrysanthemums, a type of Chinese flower. He gets a new outfit in the fourth season, which trades his more loose-fitting clothes for a tighter body suit. He has two swords strapped to his back, instead of just one to his side. The original sketch has some sort of tracking device over his left eye, but this is dropped in the final product in favor of the original headband.

Personality

Ulrich doesn't say much about his personal life and is evasive when someone asks him about himself or his family. He seems to have trouble opening up to people and hides his feelings in order to use them all the more explosively in action. Whenever someone is in danger, his feelings appear very quickly. The first example of this is in the first season episode "Killer Music," when Odd is about to be sent to the hospital. A similar situation occurs in the second season episode "Cold War," where he tells Yumi that he needs her and screams when she seems to have died.

Though on the outside Ulrich appears to be fairly emotionally strong, he deals with hidden issues few could understand. One cause of this are his parents, who are very hard to please and have high expectations of their son. In "Zero Gravity Zone," Jeremie berates Ulrich for going to the soccer game instead of helping to fight XANA, which upset Ulrich. Odd explained Ulrich's reasoning after he had left the room. He went because he didn't want to disappoint his parents, especially his perfectionist father, a businessman. This is later proven in "Final Round," when Ulrich's father appears and berates him for his failing performance in school. A clear example of his bad grades is when he got an F+ on a science test in "Nobody in Particular".

In the second season episode "Vertigo," it is discovered that Ulrich has vertigo, which is a chemical disorder that causes dizziness. He shows signs of it when attempting to climb a rock wall, which reveals the condition to his friends. It hasn't seemed to affect him before this point. Having vertigo does not seem to be a hindrance on Ulrich, since it doesn't stop him from fighting XANA's monsters on cliffs or scaling walls in an attempt to destroy them. This is strange because Odd's motions sickness effects Odd, but Ulrich's vertigo doesn't.

Ulrich has a close relationship with Yumi, based on observation from a distance and repressed admiration, though both he and Yumi constantly waiver between just friends and more than that. This admiration can sometimes cause him to do things that one might consider to be stupid. For example, in the episode "Saint Valentine's Day," he writes a poem for Yumi, but when he sees Yumi with William Dunbar, he reads the poem to Sissi instead in an attempt to make Yumi jealous. He later admits that he wrote the poem for her. In the episode "The Chips Are Down," when it looked as if Yumi might move back to Japan, Ulrich actually tried to write a letter to the president in an attempt keep her near the school. He abandoned this plan once he heard the lotto numbers being announced on the radio. Instead, he copied the numbers and activated a return trip in order to win the lottery. This action temporarily cost him his position in the group, and he was banished until they could think of an appropriate response. Unfortunately, as of the third season, Ulrich's relationship with Yumi has been reduced to a purely platonic level. Even after this Ulrich still shows through his actions that he still considers them to be more than just friends. In the episode "Tidal Wave" after saving Yumi's life he tells her that he would do anything for her. Also, in the episode "The Pretender", Ulrich tricks a boy named Johnny, who has a crush on Yumi, into embarassing himself in front of Yumi, because he couldn't stand the idea of anyone else going out with her.

Yumi is not the only person interested in Ulrich; Emily, Milly, Sissi, and Tamiya have also expressed interest in him. Sissi is the most notable of the four since she's the most persistent in trying to get him to like her back (usually through mean-spirited jokes or pranks towards him and his friends), and fails to accept any kind of defeat in the matter, at least during the first season. Quite often, Ulrich has been forced to take one for the team in regards to her, meaning he had to distract Sissi to protect their secret or fake being nice to her while the others took care of the problem, much to his displeasure. Although it is very obvious in most episodes that Ulrich dislikes Sissi, in the episode "Ultimatum" Sissi saves Ulrich's life and then kisses him just before they returned to the past. For the rest of the episode, Yumi notices Ulrich being stranglely nice to Sissi. However, in all other episodes, this dislike is clearly evident.

Ulrich was, and likely still is, one of the strikers for the Kadic soccer team. He's quite good at the sport, being basically the game-winning element on the team. Jim even says so in the episode "Zero Gravity Zone." The soccer team is not mentioned or seen after this episode.

Skills

For the first few seasons, Ulrich takes on the appearance of a samuri, wearing a loose-fitting and mostly yellow tunic and a yellow headband. Like the typical samuri, the sheath for his katana is at his side. In the fourth season, this outfit is substituted for a yellow form-fitting suit, though he retains his headband. His katanas are also strapped to his back instead of his side.

On Earth, Ulrich is a capable martial artist trained in the art of Pencak Silat. At least part of this training is from Jim, as shown in "XANA Awakens." He's also capable with a sword, which is his main weapon in Lyoko. He demonstrates this talent outside of Lyoko in the episode "A Bad Turn" when protecting Yumi from a materialized Krabe. As evidenced by a quote by Ulrich in "Rock Bottom," he also practices other martial arts, and in "Revelation," he copies the famous nosewiping and hopping stance of martial arts movie star Bruce Lee; this occurs during the battle between himself and a polymorphic clone that had transformed into a dark version of Ulrich.

Ulrich uses the Overbike, a one-wheeled motorcycle (monocycle) developed by Jeremie to enable faster travel in Lyoko. It's capable of flight, but does not do so normally. In fact, is the only vehicle of the three that does anything other than hover. There is a sheath for his sword on the bike.

On Lyoko, Ulrich is able to move many times faster than an ordinary human at will, and can do so indefinitely. This enables him to further defy the already lessened laws of physics in Lyoko, allowing him to scale walls and propel himself great distances. In the second season, he gains an ability called "super sprint." This allows him to run even faster for short periods of time.

Ulrich uses a katana as his weapon in Lyoko. His sword is capable of absorbing normal laser fire and can deflect it if positioned correctly. Combined with his enhanced speed, Ulrich can easily block most laser attacks so long as he is focused on doing so. He cannot, however, block specialized attacks, such as a Megatank's elliptical laser or a Blok's ice beam. The latter may simply be a matter of timing, as the Bloks tend to catch Ulrich off-guard when using that attack. The Megatank's elliptical laser, on the other hand, has proven to be too much for Ulrich to handle, due to the sheer amount of force behind the attack. Ulrich can only block the attack for a short period of time and is always devirtualized shortly afterward. If disarmed, Ulrich's sword can also be destroyed through a barrage of regular laser-fire (seen in "The Pretender").

Ulrich also possesses the ability to clone himself. He can create two at a time, and can only do so once per trip to Lyoko. The clones appear to be controlled by Ulrich through telepathy. The clones have every ability he does, with the exception of cloning themselves. They can only take one hit before being destroyed, and are destroyed automatically should the real Ulrich be devirtualized. In their normal form, called "triplicate," Ulrich simply creates the clones as assistants. At first, Ulrich's control of these clones seemed rudimentary at best, since they would often be easily hit. As the series has progressed, his control of them has refined. In the episode "Tip-Top Shape," he was able to use his clones to fight three groups of monsters (a Krabe, a Blok, and three Kankrelats) without losing a single clone to his opponents. He even toyed with the final Kankrelat, having one of his clones kick it into the air so he could strike it in mid-flight. The clones can also be used in a second manner, called "triangulate." In this instance, Ulrich and the clones form a triangle around their target. A silhouette of Ulrich then runs around the perimeter of that triangle, forming a golden barrier. This is meant to confuse the target so Ulrich can destroy it. After the technique is finished, any remaining clones revert to their assistant state. The clones can also be drawn back into Ulrich in a process called "fusion."

Ulrich has, on several occasions, shown to be the most skilled in Lyoko when fighting. Many times he has defeated multiple monsters with skillful takedowns (particularly in the third season), and has outlasted the others, being the last to be devirtualized, such as in the episode "Code: Earth."

Since the beginning of the fourth season, Ulrich now wields a second katana, granting him greater attack strength and defensive measures.

William Dunbar

Description

William is introduced in the second season as a new student at Kadic Junior High School, having been expelled from his previous school for plastering love letters everywhere. William serves as a foil for Ulrich Stern, both in his attraction to Yumi Ishiyama and later appearance as one of the warriors on Lyoko. Unlike Ulrich, he is more outgoing and less reserved about voicing his feeling. As another parallel to Ulrich, William has exhibited common sense and ability to take charge in dangerous situations, like in the episode "Attack of the Zombies".

Synopsis

Throughout the second season, William's attention is mainly focused on Yumi, as he attracted to her just as much as Ulrich is and isn't afraid to show it. However, he also realizes that mutual attraction Ulrich and Yumi hold for each other, and attempts to convince Ulrich to act on it at one point, the motivation being that he'll do so if Ulrich does not. This continues into the third season, at which point Yumi is simply tired of his advances.

William eventually becomes the fourth Lyoko warrior, having proving himself helpful in "The Secret" by disarming a bomb. However, William was not made part of the group in that episode due to Yumi's distrust of him. It is only when they realize that they need more help fighting XANA that she relents, as XANA's systematic destruction of Lyoko's sectors has been completed by this point. However, William's experience on Lyoko is short-lived. During the first attack with him as part of the group, he and Aelita are forced to go to Lyoko on their own. XANA takes advantage of this and has the Scyphozoa possess William, since William overconfidently refuses to flee from the monster despite Jeremie's urging. XANA then uses him to destroy Carthage. In doing so, William is transformed into an avatar of sorts for XANA, becoming completely possessed and even more dangerous.

From the fourth season on, William seems to take the place of the Scyphozoa, arriving to force the other Lyoko warriors into the digital sea. While the real William remains on Lyoko, Jeremie Belpois creates a digital clone of him to take his place at Kadic to keep people from realizing that he's gone missing. Unlike the real William, the clone is rather dense and unintelligent, confusing democracy for a person and making other such nonsensical statements. Since its existence is maintained by a tower, the clone is also vulnerable to being taken over by XANA, though Jeremie has taken steps to prevent this from happening.

Powers and abilities

In his short normal appearance in "Final Round", William's Lyoko attire consists of a white and blue form-fitting body suit. After becoming fully possessed by XANA, William's color scheme is changed to an all-black outfit with red outlines and the eye of XANA on his forehead and chest, as opposed to his eyes. He also gains a spiked gauntlet on his left arm, capable of blocking attacks.

William's primary weapon on Lyoko is his zanbatō, a large white blade as tall as he is. Like Ulrich's sword, it can absorb and deflect lasers. The sword is apparently heavy enough that it can't be wielded one-handed, or at least not easily. In comparison to the more subtle attack styles of the other Lyoko warriors, William merely uses brute force to destroy everything in his path. Under XANA's control, William demonstrates the ability to fire energy blasts from the sword by charing and swinging it. William's XANA-themed sword features the eye of XANA on either side and black vines creeping up the blade from the sword's hilt. He forms the sword out of smoke and can reduce it to such at will.

William displays no unique powers on his own, but when first possessed by XANA he displays ability similar to Ulrich's Super Sprint. He can also hover. Once fully possessed, William has several new powers with a predominant smoke theme to them (reflecting XANA's use of smoke-like ghosts in the real world), in addition to retaining those powers he exhibits in his original form. William can fire balls of smoke for a variety of purposes, such as restraining a target or tripping them. He can also reduce himself to smoke, which he calls "Super Smoke", and travel along the ground at speeds rivaling Ulrich's Super Sprint ability, though he needs to stop and reform to attack. This ability seems to have replaced his copy of Ulrich's skill. William has the ability to see great distances on Lyoko in a manner similar to the effect used for Odd's Future Flash (without actually seeing into the future).

William has an unusual resistance to damage on Lyoko, being able to survive multiple attacks that would devirtualize any regular monster or warrior. Aelita only successfully gets rid of him by creating a massive energy field attack, and exhausts herself significantly to do so. In addition, he doesn't devirtualize in such situations. Instead, he is reduced to a glowing-red smoke that flies away from the scene.

As William is working under XANA's command, William can also order XANA's monsters to do his bidding. He even has his own personal Manta, which is colored black instead of the standard blue and has intricate markings along its wings. Though it doesn't seem to be any more durable than a normal monster, William can control it through his smoke abilities (creating makeshift reins) and use it as a vehicle.

Attack of the XANA! He has put some random stuff in your head!

Description

Note: While XANA has no gender (which in that case, is creepy...), it is referred to as male by the show's heros, and is referred to as such here.

XANA seeks to destroy or take over Earth (whichever comes first), and destroy his four main adversaries in particular. In order to attack the real world, he activates towers on Lyoko, enabling him to create a ghost or spectre to possess something or someone and attack the real world. The color of the tower's aura changes to red when it is activated, as opposed to neutral blue, green, or white. Everything associated with XANA, including things or people possessed by him, his monsters, and various programs on the supercomputer, display his symbol, the "Eye of XANA".

As Jeremie describes it, XANA creates his ghosts by creating "digital impulses that travel through all networks at hyperspeed to gather huge amounts of energy", thus allowing them to physcially manifest in the real world through any non-wireless electrical device. In the first season, XANA could only possess objects or small animals. In and after the second season, XANA gained enough power to possess people, and to create ghosts known as polymorphic clones that could exist on their own and become anyone they wished.

Once XANA possesses something, he can alter it to suit his needs. For example, a teddy bear can be converted into a two-story giant ("Teddygozilla"), while electrical sockets can be modified to emit earth-shattering sonic pulses ("Just In Time"). When XANA possesses people, they gain the ability to disassemble and reform at will, which can be used to pass through solid matter or avoid life-threatening injuries. In addition, their physical abilities are augmented to superhuman levels, and they gain the ability to manipulate electricity for various offensive and devensive purposes which vary between users.

XANA creates monsters to defend the towers he activates. Though the monsters usually fail in this duty, even their failure is sometimes beneficial. Because XANA's attacks tend to be rather disruptive to the lives of everyone in the city, Jeremie will often use the supercomputer to travel back in time (called a "return trip") and undo XANA's attack. Because the supercomputer is a quantum computer, each return trip adds a qubit to the supercomputer, doubling its power. XANA can then use this extra power to make his subsequent attacks stronger. Since he has escaped the supercomputer, however, it is unknown if XANA can still do this, as Jeremie using return trips more often than before.

History

While XANA's past beyond the group's discovery of supercomputer remains mostly shrouded in mystery, what little is known is that Franz Hopper created him along with the supercomputer and Lyoko in order to destroy Project Carthage, which was a military project intended to disrupt enemy communications. XANA rebelled at some point after this, which Franz discovers shortly after he and Aelita travel to Lyoko, forcing him to shut down the supercomputer.

For sometime after this event, XANA remained dormant within the supercomputer until it was reactivated by Jeremie Belpois. After Jeremie reactivated the supercomputer and awakened XANA, he began his string of attacks on the real world, with each being stopped by Jeremie, Aelita,Odd Della Robbia, Ulrich Stern, and Yumi Ishiyama. Since Aelita was trapped within the virtual world, shutting down the supercomputer was not an option. Thus, Jeremie worked on materializing Aelita while dealing with the attacks for most of the first season.

While Jeremie succeeds in materializing Aelita by the end of the first season, she remains linked to the supercomputer. Since her memories remained in XANA's possession, she remained linked to him. Jeremie believes this to be a virus at first, and works on a way to remove it for most of the second season. During this time, the principles behind XANA's attacks are revealed, as is the reason behind his increasing power. XANA also begins possessing living humans, as well as creating ghosts capable of existing on their own.

In the episode "Unchartered Territory", when Aelita retreats to Lyoko to escape the pressures of living on Earth, XANA took the opportunity to capture her with an entity known as the Transport Orb. The orb brought Aelita to a fifth sector in Lyoko, known as Carthage. Upon her arrival in the sector, XANA began to pursue Aelita with a monster called the Scyphozoa, and continued to do so throughout the season. Unlike other monsters, the only purpose of the Scyphozoa was to steal Aelita's memories. The reason for the action was unknown to the group at the time. Carthage is also revealed to be XANA's home sector, where all his information is stored.

At the end of the season, the group learns of Aelita's true origins. Being Franz Hopper's daughter, she holds half of the keys to Lyoko, the other half of which XANA had stolen from Franz upon his arrival. The actual cause of her link to the supercomputer is also revealed. The group arranges a mission to retrieve her stolen memories from XANA, but it ends in failure. Having anticipated their actions, XANA replaced her missing memories with fakes, then stole her memories after isolating her from the rest of the group. With a full set of keys, XANA managed to fully infect Lyoko, allowing him to escape. XANA's infection of Lyoko is reversed by Franz Hopper, who also restores Aelita's memories, but XANA had already escaped by that point.

In the third season, XANA has since moved onto the internet, safe from any attacks by the group. The reverse is not true, however. XANA can still activate towers on Lyoko, which seems to be required for him to create ghosts. Since he has basically the entire internet at his disposal, his attacks are far more powerful now. XANA still seems to be threatened by Lyoko, as he is now actively trying to destroy it.

In the end, XANA possesses William through the Scyphozoa and uses him to destroy Lyoko's core. William is seemingly left permanently possessed after the incident, as evidenced by the darker and XANA-inspired version of his regular outfit.

Powers

On Lyoko, XANA's powers are limited to materializing monsters and altering terrain. He can only alter the terrain to a limited extent, but on a much larger scale than Aelita. While Aelita has control over basically any point on Lyoko's surface, XANA's ability seems limited to pre-defined points that trigger automatically. XANA can do anything from creating a labyrinth around a tower to creating a duststorm on a desert plateau.

Through the towers on Lyoko, XANA's attacks on the real world are limited only by his imagination. His ghosts can be used for a near-limitless amount of purposes, and XANA himself can direct their actions remotely. In most of the first season and parts of the following seasons, XANA's attacks were focused on various inanimate objects, most of which were some type of electrical device. XANA has also demonstrated the ability to disrupt the fundamental forces of nature on two occasions, those forces being gravity and weather, respectively. In "Zero Gravity Zone", XANA used various capacitors scattered about the city to create a magnetic field that canceled out the gravitational pull of the Earth. In "Cold War", XANA altered the atmosphere above the city to create a snow storm, continuously decreasing the temperature in the city.

XANA can possess living things, but only does so regularly after the first season. The only living things XANA possesses in the first season are rats and bees, possessing a single one at first and having it spread the possession like a virus to others of its kind. After using the time travel feature of the supercomputer to greatly increase the supercomputer's power, he used this power to possess humans. When possessed, the Eye is superimposed on the person's pupils and their voice is demonically warped (apparently in the fashion of XANA's real voice as heard in "Ghost Channel"). The possession also gives its victims enhanced abilities, such as super-strength, the ability to pass through solid objects, and energy manipulation. The latter manifests in different ways depending on the person. Those possessed also tend to keep some of their original personality. This can be seen in their behavior. They often refer to taking orders from XANA and keep some of their more distinctive traits, such as Nicolas' rather strange laugh.

Aside from affecting the outside world, XANA can use his ghosts to possess the supercomputer itself, giving him access to features he otherwise can't use on his own. Through this, XANA can materialize his monsters into the real world. So far, he has done this with Kankrelats and Krabes. The latter of the two are much larger than the scanners and destroyed them upon materializing, limiting their total number to three. The Kankrelats, on the other hand, easily fit into the scanners, and a sizable army of them were created before XANA was stopped. XANA also created a duplicate of Yumi on one occasion. On one occasion, XANA takes control of the time travel feature of the supercomputer, but does not use a ghost to accomplish it. In that instance, XANA placed a virus in code downloaded from Carthage, which Jeremie unwittingly released into the main system.

XANA's most advanced ghosts are independent, not requiring a host to exist. These ghosts are known as polymorphic clones, since their main function is to assume the appearances of others. They possess every ability a possessed person does, as well as the natural morphing skills of regular ghosts. They are often used to replace various members of the group, creating confusion from within. XANA also had one impersonate an actual ghost on one occasion. XANA had damaged the tower-scanning program earlier to complete the illusion. In the episode "Revelation", a clone disguised itself as Odd and went to Lyoko. Once there, the polymorphic clone could transform itself into any member of the group, complete with their abilities and weapons.

After escaping from the supercomputer, XANA's already formidable powers are magnified. Though towers are still required to initiate the attacks, they are on a far greater scale. Instead of possessing people one at a time, XANA is capable of directly possessing mass numbers of people at once. XANA can also control a large number of single objects, such as varying types of food. By using the Scyphozoa, XANA can also transfer his viruses into those on Lyoko. He first uses this ability on Aelita in the episode "Lyoko Minus One". Using her, he then transferred the virus into the passage tower of the Forest sector. This was accomplished in the same manner as Aelita uses to shut down towers, except that the normal "Code Lyoko" is replaced with "Code XANA" ("XANA" being in red letters). XANA then deleted the sector entirely. He does the same to the other three sectors over the course of the third season and uses a possessed William Dunbar to destroy Carthage in the final episode of the season.

After using William Dunbar to destroy Lyoko, XANA seems to permanently possess William for use as an avatar of sorts. This more potent possession transforms William from his normal bright appearance to a much darker, XANA-themed appearance. In addition to the physical transformation, William's powers are augmented on Lyoko to suit XANA's needs.

Yumi Ishiyama

Description

Yumi is the oldest member of the group, being a year older than the others. She is of Japanese descent, having moved to her current home from Tokyo. Although sometimes a bit short-tempered, Yumi is very clever. Yumi varies between reasonable and stubborn at various points; though willing to reveal the supercomputer to the police in order to prevent a nuclear explosion, it takes the destruction of most of Lyoko to convince her to let William Dunbar join the group.

On Earth, she wears a black turtleneck sweater that has long sleeves and exposes her lower stomach. Her hair is usually left hanging down in a cropped hairstyle. She also wears black pants, and a pair of boots. When she and Odd Della Robbia switch bodies, Odd comes to school wearing a different outfit consisting of black pants, a green sweater-vest with an orange shirt underneath, fingerless mesh gloves, and a fur cap with cat ears on top, all of which he claims to have gotten from her wardrobe.

In terms of character development, the two major themes revolving around Yumi are her relationship with Ulrich Stern and her parents' unstable marriage, the former of which is the central focus. Yumi's parents seem to hammer out their differences during the second season, and the issue itself is only touched upon lightly. Yumi's relationship with Ulrich remains platonic, though both clearly have feelings they're not willing to admit. They almost kiss in one episode, but decide to keep it a secret. Yumi decides to outwardly declare their relationship to be just friendship at the start of the third season.

As something of a running gag in the show, Yumi tends to receive the brunt of XANA's attacks and general misfortune; for example, Yumi has nearly (and actually) fallen into the digital sea more times than every other Lyoko warrior put together, not including William's intentional habit of doing so.

Synopsis

As the plot of the show revolves more around Lyoko than the characters themselves, few episodes offer any real plot development in regards to Yumi herself.

The episode "Seeing is Believing" highlights Yumi's more rational assessment of XANA's attack on a nuclear power plant. Failure would most certainly mean the death of hundreds of thousands of people; though such a theme is common, this particular instance would result in a very quick and irreversible wave of destruction as they would be caught in the blast.

Episodes relevant to Yumi's parents are "Laughing Fit" and "The Chips Are Down" (first and second season episodes, respectively). The former features the potential break-up of her parents due to marital troubles, which Ulrich helps resolve by participating in a school production of Romeo and Juliet and inviting Yumi's separately. The latter features Yumi's father losing his job and potentially being forced to travel back to Japan. Though the episode mainly focuses on Ulrich's reaction, it also shows that Yumi's parents still have a somewhat strained relationship.

Numerous episodes focus on Yumi's relationship with Ulrich, some more than others. "Routine" fleshes out their relationship moreso than most episodes, featuring a near-kiss interrupted by a return trip. "New Order" introduces William, who becomes a rival for Yumi's attention. Various episodes touch upon this rivalry, William acting as a motivator for Ulrich while remaining a rival. Yumi eventually gets tired of his advances and tells him as much. "Straight to Heart" makes Yumi's declaration that she and Ulrich should just be friends, since she's tired of the constant waiting in regards to their relationship.

Powers and abilities

In Lyoko, she has an outfit modeled after the outfits worn by geisha and oiran. Elements of both are used to make up the outfit. It comes with a short-sleeved/hemmed kimono over red tights, black thigh-length boots, red eye liner, red blush on her cheeks, a white-painted face and neck, and some red on her lips to complete the look. She also has a yellow sash tied to her back. In Garage Kids her kimono sleeves were longer, like that of a furisode. Her hair is bunched up into a small bun with three bangs left hanging.

In the fourth season, Yumi gets a new outfit, this one being more ninja-like in comparison to the first. It consists of form-fitting, black and red bodysuit, but retains the yellow sash from the previous one. Her hair is worn down (like her hairstyle on Earth) instead of in a bun and the geisha makeup is absent.

Yumi's Lyoko ID card shows a stylized impression of a leafy flowering plant: a sakura, a Japanese cherry blossom. For travel on Lyoko, Yumi uses the Overwing, a hovering scooter. It's capable of flight, but is a large target. She usually carries Aelita on the Overwing during missions.

Yumi's main weapon on Lyoko are her dual iron fans, though she only wields one at first, which function as saw-like boomerangs that can cut through enemies to destroy them. They can also cut Yumi if she doesn't catch them properly. With her original outfit, Yumi keeps the fans stored in the sash on her back. With her new outfit, she simply pulls them from thin air. The fans move at variable speeds depending on how they're tossed, often missing on their first pass. More often than not, their boomerang properties allow Yumi to score successful hits on the second pass, as the enemy usually drops their guard after dodging the first. The fans can also absorb and reflect laser fire. Yumi's weapons represent the middle ground between the three main Lyoko warriors: they are neither meant for close-range or long-range combat, instead achieving maximum effectiveness when used at medium-range.

In addition to her fans, Yumi is telekinetic on Lyoko, though the ability is somewhat limited and exhausting to use over extended periods. it also requires her to hold at least one hand to her head to concentrate. Yumi mainly uses the power on Lyoko's landscape, grabbing nearby boulders for use as projectiles or shields. The number and size of the objects determines her fatigue when moving them, as well as the period over which they are moved. In addition to the landscape, Yumi can use the power on her weapons to control them in-flight, or on her friends to rescue them from an otherwise fatal fall. Yumi's control over this skill seems to increase as the series progresses. At first limited to just moving rocks and being forced to remain still while doing so, Yumi's control increases to the point where she can quickly activate the power without sacrificing her movement considerably. Using her weapons, however, is near-impossible, since the concentration needed to perform one task detracts from the other.

Aside from her Lyoko-based skills, Yumi is a capable gymnast, the associated moves of which she uses to dodge attacks and approach enemies unharmed. In the episode The Key she does various combos and flips to reach and activate the Key in Sector Five. She even manages to, after activating the Key, use her legs to throw a Creeper into the Digital Void. Like Ulrich, she also knows Pencak Silat, and is consistently shown to be better than him in its use, even though it is not her main focus.
