Japanese Chins are from 4-20 lbs, and in their native country Japan (Please note that although Japanese Chins were developed in Japan they were originally from China.) were treated as royalty. They love to play and can make you laugh! They are more cat like than any other dog, often spending as much time grooming each others faces and ears much like cats, pawing at toys and slapping at toys the same as any kitty would do. They are quite dogs often a glance in the directions is all you get for a stranger, they do not bark much and usually are not watch dogs. Their long silky hair does tend to shed, but a good brushing/combing weekly and daily during shedding season will keep this to a minim.
They are delicate dogs and cannot be thrown in the back yard at a whim. They have to have a place in the house, as they cannot handle heat nor cold very well. Sometimes they are finicky eaters and this can be a problem as they are prone to hypoglycemia. Below is the website to the Japanese Chin Club of America, their website has our standard as well as an interpretation to help you better understand this lovely breed it also offers some history as well as other breeders.

Mishamai Chins is a small hobby breeder where all my chins are treated as members of my home. I currently own 8 chins with 2 visitors. I show my chindren and occassionaly breed them. I am a member of 2 kennelclubs and hold an office in both, I have also just rejoined the JCCA, having been a member from 1983-2001.
My parents say my first word was doggie! ( Maybe because my Dad raised and hunted Beagles and belonged to the East Texas Beagle Field Trail Association. My job as a young child was to socialize the puppies and to make sure my dad's oldest beagle Maggie got her exercise.)
Chins are small dogs varying in height from 8-11 inches and in weight from 3-25 lbs. Oriental and aristocratic, they own you, if you hurt their feelings you will know it. They try very hard to talk, and are often great climbers! lol! They are royalty and expect to be treated that way. They form great attachements not just to humans but to other dogs as well. For the most part chin's get along unless you have a really dominant dog. They are very quite dogs not prone to useless barking.
They are easy to housebreak for the most part, especially if you use pee pee pads for accidents,
They are one of the most loving dogs I have ever seen.
