Luton airport had two official spectators areas. The first one was a building situated just above the south apron (stands 18,18R, 19,20, 21 & 22) Which were and are still used primarily for some of the business traffic visiting Luton on a regular basis. This building was built for the spotters and it was in use for a long time by both aviation enthusiasts and the general public. But then Harrods came along and moved into the building to create a private terminal for the privacy of the owners/passengers of the bizjets that they handled.
For many years after that the spotters at luton airport had no indoor or even official spot to do their spotting so they started spreading out around the airport. Many years later they opened another official spot, this one just 35m or so further up taxiway A near the A7 Holding point. This is the one I remember as a child. They then done out the inside and created a cafertirea. Just a few years later as Easyjet was expanding even more they took over the building and created an operations centre out of it.
Now that Easyjet have moved out into the big bright orange
building (which you can't miss) the old (second) spectators
building is empty. As far as I am aware there is no plans to
demolish this building or to let any other companies move into it.
Air traffic at Luton is mixed with a lot of biz and Orange tails aka Easyjet. On one day last May from 00:00 on Wednesday 2nd May 2007 until 00:00 on Thursday 3rd May 2007 there was: 340 movements comprising of:
