Jointed Leg Brace for Torn Cruciate ligaments in dogs experiment

Simply put, my 14 year old Siberian Husky, Salinka, blew out her left knee back on the 4th of July in 2008 trying to get away from the noise. She is doing well and has built up her muscles to compensate by using a Pet MRC Wheelchair. She currently uses the wheel chair on long walks, and walks around the house without it to avoid catching on corners. She barely has a limp now and runs around like a 4 year old. I work closely with Pet MRC and also work for them. I am in college studying mechanical engineering to help improve the field of animal rehabilitation. One of the items I am experimenting, researching, is a decent leg brace that is jointed for canines. All the ones I have seen really don't improve leg movement. They just lock it in place so the patient is still limping severly when walking.

I have been researching and playing with a material known as Sintra. Its a brand of PVC foam board that is used in a lot of displays. You can place it in boiling water, the shape and mold it while warm. When it cools, and it happens quickly, the Sintra will hold that shape. 3mm and thicker provide excellent rigid support. However, jointing material I am still looking into. Here is what I managed and the first test try proved the design needs more work.

Any comments you have or suggestions email them to lupinossstudios@yahoo.com.

One possible solution or change needed that I have found is that I need to reverse the tibial or middle segment to allow the joint to work properly.
