EDUCATION: SHOUT OF THE SPED STUDENTS

Lucena City National High School formerly known as Ibabang Dupay National high school is well known because of the high quality of education that is being established by the school.

LCNHS is also caters to the need of the special children specifically deaf. Because of this the school establishes SPED. But what is SPED?

Last March 24, 1992 the government establishes an act that will benefit the disabled. This act will provide for the rehabilitation of the disabled. It is stating that the self-development and self-reliance of the disabled persons and their integration into the mainstream of society and for other purposes.

SPED or special education is the education of the persons who are physically, mentally, emotionally, or culturally different from the so called normal to such that they acquired modification of school practices and services to develop them to their maximum capabilities. There are different kind of persons that is required for the special needs those persons are the visual impairment, hearing impairment, communication disorders: language and speech, orthopedics and other health impairment, mental retardation, learning disability, emotional and behavioral disorder, autism, gifted and talented, and multiple disabilities.

There are also principles underlying the special education, the right to education, the right to equality of opportunity, and the right to participate in society.

The SPED here at Lucena City National High School is consisting of 19 students, five boys and fourteen girls. The two of those 19 is first year students, 5 are the second year students, 7 are third year students and 5 are fourth year students.

Ms. Maria Corazon C. Adion is the SPED coordinator. She takes the responsibilities in teaching the disabled. At first, she don't want to be a teacher because she describes herself when she was in high school as "muddled", she thinks that EDUCATION doesn't fit her. She took first the entrance examination for the engineers and she passed it, but she got frustrated when she saw her ranked, she was top295 out of thousand who took the examination. Because of this, she decided to take the entrance examination for EDUCATION. She was very happy and proud to ranked 6 th all over the examiners. After graduating in Manuel S. Enverga university foundation, she applied as a secondary teacher in Lucena City National High School. At first, she teaches the 1 st year students in MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) then later on, Mrs. Carandang the principal decided that Ms. Adion was better to be the SPED coordinator. She was wondering why Mrs. Carandang chose her as the SPED coordinator, but the moment she was teaching the disabled, she realized that Mrs. Carandang chose because she saw the golden heart of Ms. Adion. She also realizes the goal of having the SPED: "that everybody has the right to have a good quality of education even the disabled. Now a day, there are only few people possessing the golden heart in teaching like Ms. Adion did. For us, as a youth, the hope of the mother land we should consider Ms. Adion as one of the new hero of the new millennium because like Ms. Adion, we, believe in the saying " TO TEACH IS TO TOUCH A LIFE".

And now, here at the world full lies and difficulties, full of mysteries and liabilities, there is only one thing that for sure the disabled own, the EDUCATION. So, together with the SPED students let's shout for education.
