Zambia Annual Events

Zambia National Fishing Competition

Annually every March:

Zambia National Fishing Competition 2009 ** early March at Kasaba Bay. Nsumbu is famous for it’s excellent angling off the shoreline and some of the better catches are the large Nile perch, goliath tigerfish, vundu catfish, lake salmon and the tasty yellow belly or ‘nkupi’. Occasionally the much sought after golden perch is caught. Some world records have been set here.

The Zambia National Fishing Competition (ZNFC) attracts up to 100 fishermen from throughout Africa. Held over 6 days the competition includes hyperlight, light as well as heavy tackle classes. 2007 was the most successful event yet with 10 teams staying at Ndole Bay Lodge. Biggest fish was a 28kg Nile perch.

Victoria Falls Marathon - 24th August 2008 - postponed

Wild Frontiers, the organisers of this annual event, had announced they have had to reluctantly postpone the 2008 Victoria Falls Marathon due to lack of sponsorship and participants.  It had been hoped that income generated from this previously very popular event would benefit the local communities.

Run a 42.2km marathon, 21.1km marathon or 5km fun run.

          http://vicfallsmarathon.com/aboutrace.asp

          www.gotovictoriafalls.com

The full marathon leads through the town of Victoria Falls, over the border into Zambia and as you cross the bridge and the gorges below. The route returns to Zimbabwe and continues through the outskirts of town and along the Zambezi River drive. The finish for the race will be at the farm school situated on the outskirts of the town.  An interesting feature of this race is that a large portion of it is run in a National Park – elephant, buffalo, impala and baboon maybe seen en-route.

Livingstone Cultural & Arts Festival

August 2007/September  US$3.50 per day at the main site

First held in 1994, this festival attracts traditional rulers from all the provinces of Zambia and provides visitors with an insight to the unique cultural diversity of Zambian tribes. The festival attracts musicians, artists, poets and dramatists and is destined to become the focal point of cultural activity in Zambia. http://www.istc.org/sisp/index.htm?fx=event&event_id=32554

Livingstone's annual festival aims to showcase Zambian talent in all areas of the arts and to bring in well-known acts from abroad. The streets of the little town are taken over by theatrical troupes, performance artists, music groups, jugglers and clowns. Only a few kilometres away the Victoria Falls thunder into the Batoka Gorge.

Highlights of this year's festival are the British performance artists Anne Bean and Zhenya Iljon (twice winners of the Time Out Dance and Performance Award), who have created a magical mixture of music, sculpture and performance. Award-winning South African actors Andrew Buckland and Lionel Newton present The Wellbeing, which has just received rave reviews at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) and in Stockholm.

There is all sorts of music on offer, from blues, reggae and rhumba through to acapella. Some of last year's favourites return (including the strangely-named "No Parking Band") and there are some big new names to fill out the bill. Zambia's top artists will exhibit their work, alongside displays of nature photography and children's art workshops.

The festival is also being used to highlight the massive AIDS issue that faces Africa, which African countries have often tried to avoid. There will be discussions and lectures on the subject, while the Maramba Aids Benefit Concert will raise funds for local projects that help AIDS orphans.

The Livingstone Festival is Zambia's biggest festival

ELEPHANT CHARGE (From the Livingstonian)

The inaugural event is to be held on week-end of Sat 8th and Sun 9th November 2008.

Dear Friends

We are writing to you with regards to a Zambian initiative that we are coordinating

to raise significant sponsorship, both corporate and private, for wildlife projects in Zambia. Behind

this initiative is our passion for Zambia, its preservation and enhancement of the integrity of Zambia’s

wildlife resources, and the knowledge that together we can make a significant difference.

Our vision is:

To hold an annual event called the ELEPHANT CHARGE (based on the Kenyan Rhino

Charge concept), where the winner is the vehicle that negotiates a set course in the shortest

distance within a maximum time period.

The event to be organized so as to maximize sponsorships and value for corporate

advertising.

ELEPHANT CHARGE is registered in Zambia, and the main fundraiser is the annual Elephant

Charge. The inaugural event is to be held on week-end of Sat 8th and Sun 9th November 2008.

Each team, consists of either a 4x4 vehicle and up to 6 team members (driver, navigator, and up to 4

runners), or min 3/max 4 motorbikes/quads. They will be driving and dragging their 4x4/motorbikes

through the African bush, building roads with their bare hands and steering their vehicles/motorbikes

up and down ridiculous inclines in an attempt to get around the 20-30km course in the shortest

distance possible, in competition with up to 40 other teams. It will undoubtedly be great fun, will

engender a fantastic team spirit and generate a huge feeling of accomplishment when the day is

done, both in terms of funds raised and bush conquered. The course is set such that teams are able

to follow a bush track should they want to, and the straighter you dare to go the more intimidating it

will be!

Teams are asked to meet at Mukumunya Monkey Pools (the end of the tarmac on Leopard’s Hill rd,

Lusaka) at 8 a.m. on Saturday 8th November 2008. There they will complete registration formalities,

and be given directions to reach THE CHARGE Head Quarters. This is approximately 80km from

Mukumunya and a 2 ˝ hr drive. There is a designated area on a spring in the beautiful foot-hills of

the Lower Zambezi, where teams can set up camp for the night. At 5 p.m. Saturday, teams will be

given a map with the co-ordinates of the check-points to be completed during the race, and so have

the evening to plan exactly how you are going to tackle the course (a very well stocked bar will be

provided). Teams will assemble at 6.30 a.m. Sunday and be escorted by officials to their starting

check-point. The race starts at 7 a.m. and teams have until 1 p.m. to check-in at all check-points. It is

compulsory for every team to have a Garmin GPS (which are available at Manda Hill). Prize giving

will be at 3 p.m. allowing time to return to Lusaka by nightfall, should you need or want to.

The point of all this, is to ultimately develop a structure in Zambia that can make a significant

difference in some remarkable wildlife projects existing in Zambia, that all require support and

resourcefulness from private enterprise as much as from public enterprise, to ensure the long term

integrity of Zambia’s amazing wildlife resource and heritage.

We look forward to your support, knowing that each and every contribution is important to assist in

wildlife resource development in our region, and trust that you will partner this endeavour, and thank

you sincerely for any support that you feel able to give.

Please contact any of the following if you would like to enter a team (Kw 1,000,000 per team),

sponsor a team, sponsor one of the 9 check-points, sponsor a trophy, or be an official. Payments by

cheque are to be made out to ELEPHANT CHARGE.

Victoria Falls International Jazz Festival

Annually on December 24th and 25th each year at Elephant Hills Resort.

In its 3rd year;

"The festival features jazz and gospel, divided into jazz on the first day (7.30pm till late), gospel in the afternoon (2pm-5pm) of the second day and jazz late in the evening (8pm-till late) of the second day.

"Now known as the country's most prized annual jazz luxury with a huge regional and international taste, it will feature a cast of top class and award-winning jazz performers.

"The musicians will collaborate in a show of confidence to the growth of the music style as well as belief in the region's powerful tourism industry," Guzha said.

While the line-up for this year's edition would be announced in due course, as negotiations are still ongoing, it was anticipated that some of the biggest names in the region would grace the annual occasion.

"We are bringing in big names in the African jazz industry but at the moment we cannot release names as we are still negotiating finer contractual details.

"It is our belief that the names we have from the international, regional and local scene will once again make a huge musical impact, as is expected by our local and visiting jazz fans," added Guzha.

The organisers have since released 1200 tickets that are being sold at the Rooftop offices at 3 Wimbledon Drive, Eastlea in Harare.

Tickets are selling for Z$30 million.

The festival has featured the likes of Max Wild from the USA, Marsha Moyo from Zambia and Ntshoeleng Seetso from Botswana.
