Established in 1934, the Livingstone Museum is the largest of four national museums in Zambia. It is a multidisciplinary museum, having collections and exhibitions in Archaeology, Ethnography, History, and various branches of Natural History, including Mammalogy, Ornithology, Entomology, Ichthyology, Herpetology and Botany. It holds a vast archaeological collection among which is evidence from the biggest trade market in central Africa and mine findings of the Broken Hill Man, it also holds the main reference collection of the biodiversity of Zambia as well as a rich ethnographic collection dating back to the early 20th century. Furthermore, the Museum holds a vast collection of David Livingstone memorabilia, and has one of the oldest libraries in the country. Open everyday except Christmas and New Years. Entry fees non-residents- $5 children $2
The Lunar rainbow( moon bows) 19 hours and midnight- the views from the Victoria Falls
are phenomenal. Arrangements can be made through the National Heritage and
Conservation Commission office Livingstone. Or go on your own.
90% of the Victoria Falls are in Zambia.
The Falls are higher on the Zambian side (70m on the Zimbabwe side "Devils Cataract" reaching up to 110m at the Main Falls which is on the Zambian side. (In fact this is the location of the second highest bungi jump in the world)
On the Zambian side you can walk over the knife edge bridge a small foot bridge, 30m from the falls and at high water, it is possible to view a complete rainbow circle. There is no equivalent on the other side. Zimbabwe has some good viewing spots but when the river is in flood you are not closer than on the Zambian side. The noise, the spray the thunder this is truly unique. (Why not sleep under the spray of the falls only at Livingstone Island?) On the Zambian side you can walk to the bottom of the gorge close to the Falls into the boiling point where the Zambian Rafting starts. This is directly below the Falls! And if you are into rafting you start above Rapid Number 1 . In Zimbabwe you can only start at Rapid Number 3.
Viewing the Falls from the air; Livingstone Airport is 5 minutes flying from the Falls whereas Victoria Falls airport is 12 minutes from the falls.
The Zambian side offers Lunch on Livingstone island, with the water of the falls rushing over either sides of the island, you can have a Champagne lunch on the edge of the Falls. There is no equivalent in Zimbabwe.
The Zambian Falls has its own curio market and refreshments shop within the entrance to the Royal Livingstone/Zambezi Sun. Whereas on the Zimbabwe side there are only street vendors outside the entrance.
Low water; Zambia has it's advantages, there are pools you can swim in right at the edge of the Falls on the Zambian side, On the Zimbabwe side as it is always high water there is no safe place to swim with either crocodiles or the current to contend with.

'Medical Care in Livingstone
Livingstone has a main hospital which is quite well-equipped but many people tend to go to private clinics/hospitals. We have quite a range of clinics/hospitals and anyone visiting Livingstone, and in need to a doctor, should ask for recommendations from Livingstone folk as to where to go.
I, personally, tend to go to Shafik’s Hospital as Dr Shafik and I have been friends for years and he has always treated me, my family and staff. Dr Shafik’s specialty was surgery. Many people go to Dr Sanjay who has recently built a new clinic. But, I am sure, that many people do not know of Dr Shakanova Shamsieva who is running MedProf on
Finally, we have Specialty Emergency Services (SES) in Livingstone which runs an ambulance service for its members. SES has an insurance scheme which covers various aspects of health care. SES covers all tourists in Livingstone for companies which pay into the scheme. It is worth checking out to see if, as a visitor, you are covered in case of emergencies with SES. I know, for example, that Safari Par Excellence is covered for emergency evacuation to

LZNP outside the Park. We’re screwed in the sense that there is not any camping in the park. Visitors who have their own vehicles must return to the camps by nightfall (outside the park), and, therefore, cannot conduct night safaris on their own; neither may they leave the roads in search of game or walk in the park without the company of an armed wildlife guard. Although this seems like a minor complaint and the normal OP for Zambia parks, the best game viewing is actually at the east end of the park. Best normal game viewing times of day in that part of the park are not available to self drive due to the distance from park gates.
For the self drive visitor- I recommend visiting Mana Pools NP, Zimbabwe everytime over LZNP. Mana Pools is one of the best parks in Africa, the friendliest hands down to the self drive (the exact opposite of LZNP). It is an easy border crossing into Zimbabwe, entirely safe access, inexpensive, uncrowded, friendly park staff, abundant wildlife viewing, and without a doubt, has always been one of the most memorable parks I visit each overland safari.

Zambia - Lower Zambezi Canoe Safaris
The Great Zambezi Canoe Safari - brochure

I posted this one for the Steve Pope because it so unique, inexpensive, and this is at one of my favorite game viewing sites in Africa.
Mana Pools Chitake Springs Lion Encounter
2009 Scheduled Chitake Springs Tours
During this safari in a remote section of the park, Steve will teach you how the Chitake Lion pride (currently numbering 20+) became habituated to bush walks; the tactics used to locate and approach them; and the methods used to control the encounter. You will be encountering herds of elephants and buffalo daily, among a wide variety of other wildlife, learn about the history of the ancient village residents; 10 ways to find your direction in the bush; some survival tips; tips on animal photography and Steve, a Trustee of a Zambezi Valley Conservation Trust, will discuss the effects of mass elephant culling and the damage to habitat due to lack of fire. You will be bush walking from the tented camp to track Lion and sitting in "hides" observing game near the Springs, the only source of water for a large concentration of wildlife in this isolated ecosystem.
For those without their own wheels, you can reach one of a couple pickup points via public transportation. For a group, transportation can be organised from Livingstone and Lusaka.
A Mana Pools canoe safari can be combined before or after the Chitake Springs safari.
This is a memory of a lifetime. The highlight of any safari in Africa. You will not have this experience at any other camp, lodge or bush walking safari. An opportunity to camp and bushwalk where the Richardson's filmed their National Geographic documentary 'Living with Lions' with the same Chitake Springs pride of lions. There are no fences! Wildlife encounters are nearly assured day and night, nearby in the riverbed, on bushwalks and possibly at the campsite.
The best months for angling are September through to November and March through to June, however due to the high temperatures experienced in the Zambezi Valley, fishing is virtually a year round past-time! Look for bream, chessa, vundu (catfish) and Tiger fish.

Note that telephoning or calling in person is much more effective than emailing or faxing. If you want to do anything unusual, or to go to any of the more remote parks, then it will make your trip easier if you buy your permits in advance from Chilanga. Clear your trip with them, and get some written permission that looks official: a letter from Chilanga and the appropriate permits work wonders at even the most remote scout camps. The next best option is to try to get permission at the regional ZAWA offices – which may be easier than negotiating with the scouts on the gate.
Guides
For more adventurous trips to remote parks, hire a game scout from the nearest camp to act as your guide. This will save wasted driving time, and probably personal anguish over navigational puzzles. You may have to feed the scout, but even then this can be an inexpensive way to get a local guide who may be able to add a whole new dimension to your trip. The EXCERPT above from Bradt Guide
Feb 2008 I wonder how this will effect the self drive in the future
45,000 hectares of land in national parks to property developers
under the tourism concession agreements.
ZAWA director general Dr Lewis Saiwana said in Lusaka that the
concession agreements would be in line with a business venture that
had been embarked on by the organisation.
He also said concessions would allow investors' exclusivity of
building property and game viewing.
"ZAWA is embarking on business plans in relation to tourism
development in national parks. This entails zoning of national parks
into large tracts of land of an extent of 15,000 hectares, 20,000 to
45,000 hectares of land," Dr Saiwana said.
Dr Saiwana said the authority was looking for people to establish big
hotels and lodges in national parks.
"Developers should take note that all outstanding non-functional
tourism concession agreements signed between them and ZAWA over a
period of 24 months will be terminated with immediate effect," he
said.
"All tourism concession agreements whose developers are still
constructing and have exceeded the required construction period will
be required to pay variable charges according to the agreed occupancy
rate."
And Dr Saiwana disclosed that ZAWA had entered into public-private
partnership for the co-management and restocking of wild life in
national parks.
"So far the restocking programmes have been conducted in Lusenga
Plain National Park, Liuwa National Park and Mosi-oa-Tunya National
Park in Livingstone," said Dr Saiwana.

Mufulira to Mansa Route nearing completion - The Chembe(Levy Mwanawasa) Bridge replaces a pontoon over the Luapula River has been completed- 2008. With the Pedicle Road set to be paved through the DRC (DRC has given the go ahead to Zambia to pave Jan 8 '09), this will cut considerable time and distance between Luapula and Copperbelt provinces. Safety is no longer an issue along this road. Current 2nd hand information- normal crossing procedures apply. A toll gate will be used to collect fees to cover the costs of the paved road. Valid passport, yellow fever and vehicle registration papers and then they will allow you same day transit. But with DRC officials, expect to pay a small "per diem" *** Any additional clarification concerning documentation requirements for this transit route would be appreciated. Tourist visa or transit visa, carnet or TIP/CIP or not, 3rd party insurance available at the border post or Yellow Card needed or no insurance, International Drivers Permit or SADC licence or any Driver's licence, and fees.
Note- Travellers with visas for Uganda, Rwanda, or Burundi can be refused entry upon arrival in the DRC. Travellers are required to carry evidence of a yellow fever vaccination. Travellers have been temporarily detained or asked by immigration and security officers for “special fees” at other ports of entry to the DRC when carrying satellite phones, GPS receivers, or military clothing. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended.
Report from Jacques & Linda van Heerden 12/08
We were pleasantly suprised at how easy the pedicle was. The Zambian sides were warm and friendly and the DRC guys were a little in awe of us - don't think they see very many Mzungus going thru there with a ton of camping stuff on the vehicle! Anyhow, the DRC guys were obviously keen to assist us to empty our wallets of small change so it cost Kw5000 for this guy to fill in the book on behalf of you and another kw5000 for the next guy and so on. Same on both sides and it came to roughly kw30000 on each side if you count the $5 we paid for not having a yellow fever card. Not sure what internationals pay. The DRC guys were very respectful of our work permits.
All in all a good experience and, I must admit, we were pretty nervous.
A few things:
1. The road is very potholed dirt but we still did the 60km in an hour and a half but guys with trailers will take at least 3 hours.
2. DRC drive on the opposite side of the road and you are only warned about this by a sign that says "keep right" as you cross a bridge which is a little amibiguous as it could apply to the bridge crossing.
3. Yellow fever card essential.
4. Border closes 6pm and we were late but the guys on the other side waited for us to get in.
5. This seems to be an "in transit" crossing where no visas are required.
6. Vehicles must be in ship shape as the cops on the Kitwe side are wicked.
7. We hear via via that the border guys were recently given a serious ass whupping for being discurteous and obstructive which I think is another reason the going was so easy.
8. Carry lots of kwacha small change or at least USD small change.

No camping or accommodation currently in the park yet. The park lacks facilities and roads. There are no towns nearby, visitors must be completely self-sufficient. It is reached by a dirt track from the main road to the park gate and base at Jivundu camp(small campsite here also) in its south-west, 5 kms East from the confluence of the West Lunga and Kabompo Rivers. Cross the Kabompo via a pontoon to enter the park. The lack of water and thickness of the forest has kept the human population low in the region, and despite some poaching and the absence of protection, the forest is believed to be still fairly rich in wildlife.

Toll Fee at the Border
I have heard a lot of complaints via the
grapevine that tourists are being charged extra
fees at the borders – Kazungula and Katima
Mulilo. Some of them are being asked to pay a
deposit on their vehicle before coming in to
Zambia; some of them are being charge toll
fees.
Here is a receipt for a Toll Fee for a tourist
vehicle coming in at Katima Mulilo. Does
anyone know anything???

Unofficial Clearing Agents
It has been brought to our attention that there are individuals masquerading as ‘agents’ who claim they can facilitate border formalities for ‘self drive’ tourists to enter and exit Zambia. Please do not encourage tourists to use their services simply because gaining the necessary paperwork to enter/exit
Customs have also ‘computerised’ CIP (Customs Import Permits) so only the person authorised to drive the vehicle can apply for one at the Customs desk. They will not facilitate any so called agents trying to do the same. Zambia State Insurance also has an outlet at the border post which offers One month and more insurance policies for those requiring such cover. Again 3 or more month policies tend to be sold to unsuspecting tourists whereas a cheaper One Month policy will suffice if they are within
Just outside the fenced area is also a Bureau de Change which can facilitate the changing of money for those charges which are expressed in Kwacha .
Kindly note that all transaction with the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) are to be in the local currency – Kwacha
The border has in the recent months experienced an increase in the traffic volumes and ZRA management seeks to encourage positive cooperation from stakeholders for easy trade facility.
The Kazungula Customs management has agreed to support and assist all those that request their services. Kindly feel free to inquire or seek help from them whenever it is required.
We hope all operators will brief their driver/guides to co-operate with the Customs Officials so that we can do all that we can to facilitate a smooth entry and exit of our tourists.
Yours sincerely,

The park dries out in May and is accessable till mid January the following year. The wildebeest migration converges on the southern plains Oct-Nov, which is also the calving season, and stay there till May. Then they move into the Northern part of the park and into Angola.
2009 Liuwa Plains Visitors Guide
Reservations are essential to enter the park. There is a limitation of 25 vehicles allowed at any one time in the park. This park practices low density tourism. A basic road structure is laid out in the Park at the beginning of each season. Visitors are required to keep to these roads at all times, unless given permission by an AP-ZAWA guide. Limited offroading is permitted in remote areas where the road system is limited, and in cases of exceptional sightings. Complete self sufficiency in terms of fuel, catering and camping supplies as well as a healthy degree of offroad 4WD driving experience is neccessary.

An update- June 24, 2008- from Steve Smith at Nanzhila Plains Camp - " The roads in and around the southern part of the park are a problem. Access from Kalomo to Dundumweze has not improved since last season and in fact the culverts across a number of the streams closer to the gate may not survive the next rainy season. The 75kms takes 2-3 hours. The road from the Lusaka/Mongu junction to Itezhi-Tezhi is also not good... The internal roads in the south are not too bad with ZAWA having a new motorized grader and a new tractor and pull-grader. They are busy at the moment and this will make a real difference. The pressing problem though is access to the park. From Livingstone to Nanzhila it takes 8-10 hours at the moment and from Lusaka a similar time. The all weather road from Dundumweze up to the north of the park, is still happening but has been delayed, I understand by initial inadequate surveying. World Bank are financing it so it will happen but we at Nanzhila will probably see no benefit for a few years as they will be starting later this year from the north!"

The Zambezi River from Luangwa through the Mupata Gorge is by and large little known and difficult to access by the vast majority of tourists and fishermen, making it a unique experience for those who make the effort to get there and test their angling skills on bream, chessa, vundu (catfish) and the ever challenging voracious Tiger fish! The best months for angling are September through to November and March through to June, however due to the high temperatures experienced in the Zambezi Valley, fishing is virtually a year round past-time.
