Lincoln Trail Beekeepers Association

Bee All You Can Bee!

Beekeeping is a Crucial part of Kentucky Agriculture -

The objectives of the Lincoln Trail Beekeepers' Association are:

 The promotion of legislation and controls to protect and assist beekeeping as an industry and hobby enlisted Kentucky, our neighbor states, and the nation as a whole;

The local development of sound, scientific, and healthful practices of beekeeping; and

The education of beekeepers and the general public in the need for beekeeping and importance of bees to our local economy and agriculture.

One of every three bites you eat is the work of the bees!

Bees Are Important!

In addition to providing honey and wax,- wonderful premium natural products in which the human race has rejoiced since prehistoric times, - modern science has demonstrated how important bees are for the pollination of the fruits and vegetables which grace our dinner tables every day. Apples and pears, cucumbers and pumpkins, to say nothing of flowers- all kinds of plants depend upon insects for pollination; the most efficient pollinator is the European honey bee.

Regrettably, in our time, the culture beekeeping has fallen on hard times. Not only do we find far fewer beekeepers in Kentucky than in past times, the honey bee itself is being assaulted by a variety of difficulties: Asian parasites like Varroa and tracheal mites; indiscriminate and excessive human use of pesticides and a general intolerance of the presence of these gentle and useful creatures; and finally, poor agricultural practices such as monocrop cultivation and the commercial use crops genetically engineered without regard to the bees' ability to pollinate them.

The Lincoln Trail Beekeepers Association exists to perpetuate the practice of beekeeping in our area, and to to make more fruitful in agriculture in our district, especially in a time when many Kentucky farmers, no longer able to depend on tobacco as a primary cash crop, are seeking to diversify their farming practices. We also want to pass on knowledge and craft of beekeeping to generations coming after us, for the continuing good health of Kentucky apiculture.
