Lena Katina:born on October 4th, 1984, pupil of the 11th grade of an average Moscow high-school

Julia Volkova: Yulia Volkova: born on February 20th, 1985. Upon finishing the 9th grade entered the “State Musical Variety and Jazz Arts School”, department of variety singing.

Both Lena and Yulia sang in a children’s group “Neposedy”. Yulia had to leave the group after she was accused of “obscene behavior and corrupting other singers”.

The girls came together to the casting that took place on the Mosfilm studio. They were one of the 500 pretenders and were selected independently.

For the shooting the video “I’ve lost my mind” Lena had to lose almost 10 kg and Yulia had to cut her hair and color it black.

Lena has a chau-chau dog named Blankeria.

Nothings better than seeing what our girls have to say(well...alot of things are better...but thats not the point!) So, whats better way then to have an interview?

Yulia: TATU means "That (girl) loves that (other girl)"
Question: And which one loves which one?
Lena: Both of them love two other girls.
Yulia: That girl and That girl loves That other girl and That other girl.
Lena: Ta(That girl) Ta(That girl) loves Tu(that other girl) Tu(that other girl)
Question: I see.

Question: I read somewhere, that, judging by the look in your eyes, all of it was true?
Yulia: Yes, it is true. Voice behind the camera: He means your eyes were expressing it.
Yulia: Yes, all of it is true. All of it really happened.

Yulia: Yes, when we had the presentation of the video in Moscow we had a lot of politicians there- approximately 10 of them. After they saw us, our video, they said that now they can easily change the law.
Lena: Yes, in other words, there was this man, who suggested this law ( the law which woud prohibit this type of video). And, after meeting us, he simply said that they are going to eliminate this law.

Yulia: What do you mean by saying "black" and "white"?
Lena: He means, "bad" and "good".
Question: There was something you were telling in some Internet article…
Yulia: (interrupting) Well, no- there are no good or bad people. In every person there is something negative.
Lena: They are all different.
Yulia: Yes, they are simply all different. In every person there is something positive and something negative.
Lena: And, after all, which, I think, is known by everyone , every country has unique type of mentality. And, of course, Russia and, specifically, Moscow, are very different from another cities, countries, and so on.

Yulia: Actually, you know, our project is really built on a scandalous issue. We are a scandalous group. All the ideas for the songs, all the ideas for our videos- all of it are ideas of our producer Ivan Shapovalov. He is the person who develops all the ideas for the texts of our songs (Lena laughing) . Of course, the authors of the songs are the ones who later on compose actual texts. But the beginning is originated by our producer.
Question: (telling something)
Lena: (laughing) And the ending is also made by our producer.
Man and voice behind the camera: …Are you co-authors of the compositions?
Yulia: Well, what do you mean by "co-authors"- in lyrics or music? In reality, we can write poetry, but this poetry is not related to our project.
Lena: And all the songs are written not just for the cause of us simply singing these songs, but it is also for the sake of depiction of our lives.

Lena: Because, probably, they love it- that's all. Because they love our music. Our songs.
Yulia: (whispering) Because she loves- that's all.
Lena: (continuing) Our poetry. (laughing)
Question: And why do some people hate you?
Lena: Well, because they don't like us- us, our music, our…
Yulia: You know, actually, I think, that this attitude..
Question: (interrupting) And who doesn't like you specifically?
Lena: You know, whether they like it, or not…
Yulia: Sleep, my beauty ( a figure of speech)
Lena: Yes, sleep my beauty- those , who don't like it, don't have to listen to it. But what is mostly interesting- there are no indifferent people. Nobody stays indifferent… In other words, they either love us, or hate us.
Yulia: I think, this is a right attitude.

Lena: Because people in Poland know Russian language. (pause) Because at some point all of us (Russians and Polish) lived together.

Lena: It's obvious.
Yulia: Because Russian language is similar to Polish in some ways.
Lena: Yes, similar to a Polish language.

Yulia: Well, you understand, there many different boys and many different girls. Some of them, who come… how should I put it… who have sex..
Lena: Yes, who have sex.
Yulia: Yes, who have sex- if to say it properly in Russian language (laughing) A young man can come to the girl's place, and they can go the store and buy some groceries, they can go somewhere for socializing. All people are different. I mean, if some boy went to some girl's place- I can't tell you what they are going to do for sure. May be, they are watching TV. May be, they are cooking. May be, doing the laundry. May be, vacuuming. How am I supposed to know? With me and Lena it is also very different at many times.

Lena: Everyone has a different approach to it.
Yulia: Oh, my God! Don't you understand that such laws as in America in regards to sex and in regards to that the girl who is not 18 years old yet is not allowed to see a man who is , let's say, 20 years old- it is foolish! We don't have such rules in Moscow (Russia). A girl who is 15 years old may be dating a man who is 35 years old- and nobody is going to say anything. And the same approach is applied to the relationship between a girl and a girl. Our laws are not like some laws in America! And Russia, in fact, is very different in general. In fact, every city and every country are different from each other.

Lena: Why did you ask about Pugacheva? It is probably the first individual in Russia who started achieving her goals independently (in the sphere of music)… When they ask who in Russia is the person (in the sphere of music) who is very well known? Then, yes, everyone knows Alla Pugacheva, because she sings for quite a while already and she grew up (in the sphere of her vocal abilities) greatly, she is one of those… But the matter is that now Alla Pugacheva is mostly understood by older people. I mean, not many younger people understand her now. Even though her songs were always famous and are now. I would say, her songs are classics. And, among the popular groups… there are many various groups.. but…
Question: "Igoryok" (name of the musical group) - is it popular?
Yulia: "Igoryok" ? Well, yes. But not to such level. But..still, yes.

Yulia: What can Russia give to Europe?
Question: In the sense of music.
Yulia: Well, the matter is that Europe… Well, any country has its own predetermined style. May be. And if in Moscow there is one type of pop music, then in Europe and America, I think, there is quite a different pop music.
Lena: In Russia, many musical compositions are very beautiful.Yes.
Yulia: Also, all melodies in Russia are very similar to each other. What do people do now? They apply the same synthetic sounds. And then another performer hears this music and decides to use some of it plus adds something of his own. So, now in Russia, there is this pop music, this monotonous rhythm, these identical synthetic sounds - everything has a lot of similarities. And most melodies, if to listen to them all sound the same. For example, to me all of it is a very homogenous mixture. There are not many performers in Russia that when you listen to them you understand that this something of their own. That this a pop music, but made with a good quality- the sounds, lyrics, the voice. But mostly they copy it off each other.

Question: Do you know this saying: "Chicken is not a bird, Poland is not abroad" ?
Lena: We know.
Yulia: Chicken is not a bird?
Lena: Poland is not abroad...
Yulia: Yes.

-Our life before t.A.T.u.? Get up, eat breakfast...lotsa interviews, says Julia.
-No, no, the journalist is asking how it was BEFORE t.A.T.u., Lena explains. 
I think... Because she's speaking in Russian, and my question about the difference 
in their lives before and after t.A.T.u. kind of fade away, because Julia can't understand me. 
We decide that Lena will speak for the both of them. 
Julia ends up sitting there, moping, sometimes commenting in Russian.
-Nobody decides what we say. We are totally free, answers Lena, when I try to 
confront them with another rumour: that their management pulls all the strings.
The fact that their clothes doesn't cover much skin doesn't really provoce me, 
as long as their doing it at their own free will.
But their image kind of backfires on them: 
-We really hate questions about being lesbian. The journalists asks: "How can
you fuck, you're two girls?" Lena sighs.
