SAVE "NUGGET"!

KEEP THE NUGGET!

"I am not a nugget" is what caught my eye 5 years ago and lead me to PETA and of all the flyers and stickers and protest signs I've held that "nugget" is the one who always gets the attention.

04/01/08 6:21AM                       Retiring the Nugget

Hey everyone, it’s probably no shock to you that the day has finally come to put our cute little "Not A Nugget" character to rest. That’s right, we’re retiring the Nugget after many years of hard work speaking up for animals around the world. He’s getting sort of tired and played out and we’re tossing around ideas of using more mature animals either way like donkeys and llamas. They’re a bit more noble than a baby chicken, don’t you think? We want people to get active and cute chickens just don’t scream Animal Liberation Now!!! Anyway, here are some photos by which to remember our good times with the Nugget.

Boycott KFC!

Why KFC?

Other Viewing Options

More than 850 million chickens are tortured and killed each year for KFC restaurants. Undercover investigations have revealed shocking cruelty to animals in the factory farms and slaughterhouses of KFC’s suppliers, where birds are crammed by the tens of thousands into sheds that stink of ammonia fumes from urine and feces and are given barely enough room to move—each bird lives in a space about the size of a sheet of paper. They suffer broken bones from being fed growth-inducing drugs (which cause them to grow so quickly that they become crippled under their own weight), being subjected to careless handling (when workers roughly grab birds by their legs and stuff them into crates), and being shackled upside-down at slaughterhouses. Many chickens are still conscious when their throats are cut and when they are dumped into tanks of scalding-hot water for feather removal. When they’re killed, chickens are still babies, not yet 2 months old out of a natural life span of more than 10 years. Think about that for a second; if you eat at KFC, you’re eating babies.

We can’t persuade KFC to improve the lives of chickens killed for its restaurants without you! Sign the pledge to boycott KFC and let the company know that its cruelty to animals will not be tolerated. Go here for more ways to help.

“[KFC] never had any meetings. They never asked any advice, and then they touted to the press that they had this animal-welfare advisory committee. I felt like I was being used.”
—Dr. Adele Douglass, former animal welfare advisor to KFC, Chicago Tribune

When:   Saturday, December 1st, 12:00 noon-1:00 p.m.
What to bring: Yourself, your friends, and your family members (protest materials will be provided)

To clear this up ... we are not protesting the fact that people eat chicken, we are protesting the torture and abuse inflicted on thousands of live chickens every day by KFC.

Special thanks to our organizers for their unwavering commitment to advocating for chickens. Please join them at the demonstration this Saturday!

This will also be a great chance to meet other people in your area who are concerned about cruelty to animals. You can direct questions about the demo-and RSVP-to Ann at plaincrzy@aol.com.

Thanksgiving Goodies for Your Turkey-Free Pleasure!

Check ‘em out: For 40 days in 2006, PETA undercover investigators worked as "live hangers"—the people who receive live birds and shackle them for slaughter—at a Butterball turkey plant in Ozark, Arkansas. PETA's investigators caught despicable acts of cruelty to animals on a hidden camera. What happens to these birds—and to all birds who are processed in such plants—would horrify even the most die-hard meat-eater. Click here to check out the investigation footage for yourself, and to help protect turkeys.

Rob Zombie, who stopped eating our feathered friends years ago, doesn't have a problem with watching people get hacked to bits on the big screen, but when it comes to the way animals are treated in real life, it's a different story entirely. So we thought it was only fitting that he help us call attention to Butterball's house of horrors by recording peta2's Thanksgiving hotline message. Please boycott Butterball and make Zombie's message your voice-mail recording. Not only will you be spreading the word about Butterball's cruel methods to everyone who calls you, they'll also think you're a total badass for having Rob Zombie answer your phone.

And don’t forget to wish your friends a happy Thanksgiving with our “Don’t Eat the Mascot” E-card!

Petition: Save a Turkey This Thanksgiving!

Each year, more than 300 million turkeys are raised and killed for their flesh in the United States alone. Like other birds, turkeys—called "true American originals" by Ben Franklin—have no federal legal protection, so they are abused from the day they are born. The video here, taken during an undercover investigation into one Butterball turkey plant, shows just what happens to these animals before they end up dead on a dinner plate.

Much has changed since the time of the pilgrims. In today's factory farms, thousands of turkeys are crammed into filthy sheds after their beaks and toes are burned off with a hot blade. Many suffer heart failure and become crippled under the weight of their genetically manipulated and drugged bodies. When the time comes for slaughter, they are thrown into transport trucks, and when they arrive at the slaughterhouse, their throats are cut and their feathers are burned off—often while they are still conscious.

This holiday season, give turkeys something to be thankful for by saying "No, thanks" to dishes with meat. Please sign your name on the form
here and pledge to have a meat-free Thanksgiving. If you need some ideas on what to make for your family's holiday feast, click here for delicious vegetarian holiday recipes!
