Missed Usher's tour? Tune in to Showtime

In case you were sitting too far away to actually count his six-pack of abs last fall when he gigged at Philips Arena, Showtime is scheduled to beam Usher Raymond into your living room.

The Alpharetta R&B phenom's live performance from San Juan, Puerto Rico will air live on the cable network March 5 via "One Night One Star: Usher Live."

We're told that the 90-minute show will feature the singer performing hits from his latest multiple hit-laden disc "Confessions" along with the likes of "You Make Me Wanna" and "U Remind Me" from his hit catalog.

"Usher is, without question, the biggest thing in the music business right now, and we're thrilled he wanted to do his live concert with us," says Robert Greenblatt, Showtime's president of entertainment.

In case you had any doubt, Usher's 2004 tour raked in $29.1 million in North America, and he's nominated for eight Grammys, including album of the year. Figures relating to the exact number of groupies the tour attracted were still being crunched at press time Friday.

The concert will air at 9 p.m., live on the East Coast but tape-delayed on the West Coast.

Strait Shoots Past Usher

by David Jenison
Oct 13, 2004, 12:35 PM PT

Usher was thisclose to reclaiming the top slot on the Billboard album chart. But when the dust settled, that cowboy crooner George Strait lassoed away the number one position.

Early Wednesday, the sales-tracking folks at Nielsen SoundScan reported that, in one of the year's closest chart finishes, Usher's revamped Confessions (the disc includes new artwork, a DVD and new tracks, including the R&B crooner's new radio hit, a remix of "My Boo" with Alicia Keys) edged out Strait's 50 Number Ones by a mere 5,000 discs, 336,000 copies to 331,000.

But before you could say hold your horses, Strait was back on top thanks to a tallying faux pas. SoundScan's new numbers showed that Strait's latest greatest-hits collection actually moved 343,000 to Usher's 336,000.

About Usher Uncut
E! hits the road with Usher for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the multi-platinum selling artist, and the personal and professional challenges he faces as music's newly anointed number one act. Usher Uncut follows the charismatic phenom on his The Truth tour as he takes on the grueling schedule of eight shows, in eight different cities in only 10 days. From Miami to Tampa to Jacksonville, New York, Tallahassee, Charlotte, Greenville, and culminating in his hometown of Atlanta, where he is joined by friends Lil Jon and Ludacris for the taping of Live: The 2004 Truth Tour DVD, Usher gives fans a raw look at his life, insatiable drive for perfection and the inner-workings of his tour. "My capabilities as an individual ... I gave {those} up a long time ago," explained Usher. "I let God take over my life and just open doors and lead my life, the way He wanted to I know that could be hard to believe, seeing as some of my issues are Some of the songs I talk about are very risqué, speaking of infidelity, cheating, sexuality, all of that stuff. But ... for me, this is all life imitating art. You know?"
Throughout this documentary special, crews follow Usher on his tour bus, through his rigorous rehearsals, frenzied public appearances and, of course, during his red-hot performances. Although he often credits his mother, Jonnetta, with his enormous success, he admits that at age 26, it's difficult to balance her roles as mother and manager with his growing desire for independence. "Everyday is a work in progress, and we learn to cope with each other," says Usher. "As a man I'm still developing. As a businessman, I'm still developing. But it's my mother I'm developing with, so all odds are against you. It's almost like trying to ride a bicycle or a tricycle, and your mom doesn't want you to fall. It's like, 'But mom, let me, can I please ride?'"

Usher In June2004 Issue of Ebony

CURRENT ISSUE: JUNE 2004

EBONY MAGAZINE
The query was simple, but the silence was deafening. Who would have thought that a straightforward question like: "What did you like most about Chilli?" would garner anything but a straightforward answer from the always outspoken Usher Raymond IV?

After all, with his historic new CD Confessions selling a mind-boggling million copies the first week - breaking the R&B sales record that has stood for more than two decades and earning him the right to be called the "King of Urban Soul" - and with everything going his way, you wouldn't expect him to be at a loss for words.

So on this day, as he sat in the kitchen of his suburban Atlanta estate on the heels of the claims, blames and accusations that followed his bitter breakup with Rozonda (Chilli) Thomas of the group TLC, why was there palpable silence to a question that seemed to have such an obvious answer? For more than two years, Usher and Chilli were there - the quintessential celebrity couple - in an extremely intense (and extremely public) relationship for the entire world to see. He affectionately used to call her "Lil' Big Mama," and her name for him was "Papa Bear." Eight years his senior, she was always there to tuck in his shirt, pull up his sagging jeans. He was always be there for her, to open her door, to romance her like only a true R&B star could. She was his biggest fan. He was her biggest supporter, even during and especially when her fellow group member Lisa (Left Eye) Lopes died in a car crash in 2002.

True, the headline-blaring breakup of a major love affair can give pause to even international sex symbols - but for the good part of one minute? Had Usher been up in the Atlanta clubs screaming "Yeah" (the name of his No. 1 single) so much since the breakup that he hadn't even had time to think about Chilli? Or had the 25-year-old heartthrob not been able to stop thinking about her - thinking about how much he loved her, how much she loved him, how much he let her down, how much, he says, she let him down?

Usher In Sister2Sister

Usher and Chilli split by Jamie Foster Brown

When Usher and Chilli hooked up more than three years ago, the pair instantly became one of the hottest celebrity couples in music. And with good reason: Chilli was always known for her long flowing black hair, cutesy girl-next-door looks, and the "sexy" part of TLC's crazysexycool persona.

For his part, Usher has been named one of the sexiest men in music under 25. Throughout their relationship, Usher, who has been known to be extremely private about his personal life, was seen escorting Chilli to various high profile events, including last year's Grammys. She also starred in his videos. He seemed proud to be seen in public with her.
Then rumors emerged that the two were having problems because Chilli, 33, reportedly wanted to take the relationship to the next level and maybe even get married. Meanwhile, Usher, who is 25, wanted to take it nice and slow, according to reports.

Then, despite breakup rumors, Usher and Chilli appeared together at a fall fashion show in New York and at Usher's birthday party. I last saw them together at my New Year's Day breakfast in Atlanta. But it seems they broke up shortly after that, and this time the rumor mill is true.
Chilli confirmed the breakup during an interview with an Atlanta radio station. Within minutes the interview was circulating on the Internet. The relationship may have been crazy and even sexy, but it wasn't cool. "Let me re-track and set the record straight," Chilli told the station. "Usher never dumped me. Usher and I never had issues about me wanting him to settle down." Chilli went on to tell exactly why she and Usher split. "Usher did the ultimate no-no to me and I will never be with him ever again and that's just that. So there is no Usher and Chilli and it will NEVER be Usher and Chilli again!"

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Chilli's words pointed to infidelity. "He did the ultimate no-no," Chilli said. "You don't do that and he did that and I'll never take him back. So it's a done deal. He killed it. He really did and that's not acceptable."

The radio hosts joked that both Chilli and Usher were too good looking to be together in the first place. "It really doesn't matter because he really portrays himself to be this honest and great guy and he really wasn't," Chilli continued. "It doesn't matter if he is halfway cute or ugly, people just shouldn't do that. It's crazy because I know what's behind that smile. I know him. You guys don't. But when I tell you he is so not cute to me. Oh Lord… I don't ever want to see him again."

Chilli said she wanted people to understand that she doesn't believe in staying in a relationship once cheating has occurred. "If someone cheats once—one time— they probably will do it again, but you don't wait around to see if they're going to do it again because if somebody is saying that they love you so much and they're the best thing that happened to you then they wouldn't do that."

While Chilli is in the studio working with Rodney Jerkins and anticipating the release of TLC's Greatest Hits, Usher is enjoying the success of his new album, Confessions. This sounds like a lot of pain here.

Usher's not saying much on his end. But if you want to know his side of the story I'm lining up an interview for next issue and I plan to ask him everything.

Usher On the cover of Rolling Stone

Usher rips a baseball cap off his head, smacks it down on a dressing-room countertop and growls, "Fuck this motherfucking shit!" A minute ago, he pulled up in his silver Hummer to the Fox Theatre, the ornate 1920s palace in downtown Atlanta, to begin filming a video for his summer tour, but suddenly he started ranting and raving, then sprinted up four flights of stairs to this lounge, three paunchy crew guys trailing as he went by in a blur. They stagger to the doorway, huffing and puffing. "Motherfuckers in here now!" Usher yells.

"I'm getting here late -- for real -- and still nothing's organized," he says, his normally adorable face, still childlike at twenty-five, contorted with rage. "Venue not what it's supposed to be, dancers all around downstairs and ain't supposed to be: As usual, everyone's tripping and I'm un-abreast of the motherfucking plans. Nigga's got to do what a nigga's got to do, and I ain't doing it. I ain't gonna do it." He grabs his hat and kicks the door open. "I be out."

Then he pops back in, smiling a goony grin: "April Fools'!

"You was gonna lose all your hair, man," says Usher.

"You were gonna soil your pants from shit heat," says one of the crew to another.

The April Fools' punking has been going on all day. First Usher called his A&R rep and said a producer he once had a beef with had come by his house with a baseball bat and smashed his elaborate glass-plate front door, so he'd grabbed a gun and was driving over to his house -- "I'm gonna handle this like a real man! I'm gonna kill this dude!" Next, he called a friend and told him that he was about to commit suicide because of all the pressure of his career, and then he told his mother, who is also his manager, that he wouldn't drive an Aston Martin in the tour video, as planned, unless he had an endorsement deal -- "Aston Martin think they gonna use me? Use me? I don't think so." He even called his publicist and said he didn't want to do this story. "I sold millions of albums in my time and never been on the cover of Rolling Stone before?" he says. "Shoot, I thought they don't put black faces on those covers."

Usher leans back in the dressing-room chair, content with the havoc he has wreaked. His body, cut like a professional tennis player's, hums with energy, and he's wearing jeans slung so low that you not only see the waistband of his boxers but can actually make out cheeks. His personal assistant and best friend, Keith Thomas, starts to trim his hair and the room goes quiet, the buzz of the razor and snip of the scissors all there is to hear. Then Thomas breaks up. "The best was waking Usher up this morning," he says, snickering. "We were like, 'Forget 1.1 million! You sold 2 million albums yesterday!' He was all, 'Duh, I did?' "

Usher laughs, and then he nods slowly, staring at his reflection in the mirror. "Yes, sir," he says.

Selling 1.1 million albums the first week out gives you some serious bragging rights, and Usher isn't above taking them. "This is just the beginning," he says of the success of Confessions, his fifth album -- the fastest seller since 'NSync's Celebrity in 2001 and an R&B record-setter -- which kicks off with the up-tempo "Yeah!" with Lil Jon and Ludacris and is chockablock R&B from there on out. "I see a sea of people in an auditorium -- no, a dome, full of people, as far as you can see," he says, splaying his arms out. "I see millions of albums, huge houses, much prosperity -- I'm going to be one of the richest motherfuckers in the world. I've always been highly favored. There is a reason I've been kept the way I have, to make it out of situations that men normally wouldn't have been out of with women."

One of these situations, of course, is the one that contributed to Confessions' staggering sales: his breakup with Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, seven years his senior, the girl he coveted as the hottest chick in TLC way before they met. After they dated for two years, Thomas moved into his house. Then they started to fight, over stupid things, and they finally broke up a few days after New Year's 2004. Usher says Thomas kept calling, though, obsessing about whether he'd been with other women (he'd previously said he hadn't, but she wasn't so sure). "I said I didn't want to talk about it over the telephone," Usher says. "So she came over, but I had to do an interview. She said, 'You running.' I canceled it and sat down. I didn't take the blame out on her, say that she as a woman didn't give me what I needed. I said, 'This is something I did, it was a fucked-up decision.' She wanted to know who and how many times, and I said, 'That's not important.' Then she got on the radio and talked about it -- I could not believe that she did that."

On Atlanta's Q100, Thomas told a DJ that Usher had committed the "ultimate no-no"; Usher retaliated by publicly claiming that she had applied pressure to get married. But now he says that he'd thought about marriage, too. "I had a ring for that girl and everything, and she never knew it," he says. A jeweler in L.A. made him a ten-carat diamond ring, and he had it right in his pocket. "Something was not right," he says. "I felt like I was in a desert, running, and then there was this mirage. It's beautiful, but wait a minute: Let's make sure it's real." Nevertheless, a couple of months later, he asked her to marry him -- while they were having sex. "She was like, 'You coming on crazy,' " Usher says now. "Thank God she didn't take me serious. It was just that it felt so good, you know? And I had been talking to my friend, who told me that's how he proposed to his woman."

Today, what Usher has taken up is cigars. He's at his highly interior-decorated five-bedroom house in Alpharetta, Georgia -- it's the same subdivision where Faith Evans and Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown live, only a block from former Atlanta Falcons player Andre Rison's old house, the one TLC's Lisa Lopes burned down in 1994. "The hood of Alpharetta," Usher calls it. He's doing back-to-back interviews and photo shoots for media riled up by the 1.1 million, and every time he ducks into the kitchen, where I'm waiting, he's got a cigar dangling from his mouth or tucked behind his ear. Terence Carter, his road manager, goes out twice to pick up a series of cigar cases and shafts, and upon his return Usher examines each one carefully, selecting a small silver mini-humidor the size of a Filofax. He'll carry it everywhere he goes for the next couple of days, but he won't actually smoke any cigars.

"What is all this?" asks Jonnetta Patton, his mom and manager, moving the cases aside to make a lunch of grilled chicken and broccoli (a big, jovial woman, she has lost twenty pounds by eating primarily this). "It's not April Fools' anymore."

"His new thing," says Carter, laughing. "The James Dean thing."

As Patton extols the virtues of colonics, Usher harasses Keith Thomas about what to do with his hair today. "Let's do some wild shit," Usher says. "Polka dots, something different. A mohawk!"

"Can't be a mohawk," says Thomas. "Puff already did that."

"Fuck that, young brother," says Usher. "He freaked it to look all classy. We freak it to look like I don't give a fuck."
