Longride2008

The Long Ride 2008 is being run in support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) is the national body for prostate cancer in Australia. The PCFA plays a vital role in the fight against prostate cancer and devotes all of it resources towards reducing the impact of prostate cancer on the community.   The  goal of the PCFA is to reduce the impact of prostate cancer on Australian men, their partners, their families and the community; to represent the interests of all Australian men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The PCFA works to raise awareness and attract widespread financial support for the work of the Foundation to: fund research into the causes, detection, diagnosis and improved treatment of prostate cancer; to provide information, support and counselling to those affected by prostate cancer; and to raise community awareness of the incidence of prostate cancer, thereby encouraging earlier detection and more effective treatment of the disease.

Mission:  To invite motor cycle riders throughout Australia to participate in the Long Ride 2008 to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia.  The Long Ride 2008 begins in some areas on 14 Oct 08 due to the distances involved, however, Saturday and Sunday 18/19 October 2008 is designated Long Ride For Prostate Weekend.  If you cannot do the entire trip to Perth, ride one of the routes on the Saturday and Sunday to support this most worthy cause.   We need to get all motorcyclists on the road that weekend to support the PCFA and our men.  Contact christopher.dunne@bigpond.com.au or look at the admin sheet and fill in your details and email back to that email address when you decide to participate.

Reason:  This charity ride is designed to encourage you to do something totally different in your life.  It is about life on the road, meeting new people, and exploring your self as you do something you love to do - ride. The Long Ride 2008, in support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia, will enable you to touch upon the freedom seldom experienced by riding around your local area; you can do this by taking a chance, meeting a new challenge and experiencing life on the road through the most beautiful country in the world.   There is no better holiday.

You may know how ride a motorcycle, but do you really know the feeling of travelling for days with a group of other motorcycle riders? The whole atmosphere is different. When a motorcycle pulls into a new town, eyes turn toward it (you've seen it). But, when a group of motorcycle riders thunder into town, all attention within a half-mile focuses on the riders. People are inspired by the freedom represented in these riders. The locals come from all over just to look at the bikes and chat with you, not stangers for long.  You can be one of them.

All you have to do is choose to make this real and join the Long Ride 2008.  Live this dream.    Many people never understand 'rider' culture, and all you have to do is choose to join the Long Ride 2008 and help our men help themselves.   Each night we stay in a different town; each day we see different sights in magnificient locations, meet new people and most important of all make new friends.  This is the real thing, life on the road, without the dangers that follow a solo rider. Anyone can ride a bike, but this is a chance to make a difference in your life and in others.

Do you need to do something different, if so then get on your bike and join us in exploring the great open roads to Perth.  Here is the opportunity to contribute your time and friendship to a great many people.  Contact christopher.dunne@bigpond.com.au or 0419279337.

Contribution: All riders participating are requested to donate $50.00 to the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia as a registration.  To donate click on the following link www.everydayhero.com.au/Chris_Dunne  The Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia supports this link.  Additionally, all participants are encouraged to run their own local fund raisers and get their local businesses to donate at least a $1000.00 towards the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia, not mandatory just a suggestion.  If this could be achieved, what a difference you have made.  What do you get for participating.  Your registration of $50.00 ,donation, will give you unlimited time on the road and a sore bum, you will make a lot of new friends, visit towns that you would possibly never visit, meet locals who will talk your head off, swap stories and tell as many tall stories as you will, drink with like minded riders in very old pubs.

Conduct:   In October 2008, the Long Ride will begin.  It will begin with an early breakfast at home in the suburbs, a quick check of the bike and gear, a kiss and a wave to those left at home.  Along the way out of town, you will join others eager for the open road and the adventure to unfold.  Across Australia, on different days depending on the route, riders will gather gradually to a great number on the Long Ride to Perth.  Riders from all States will meet up at Port Augusta.  When all are assembled the Long Riders will mass for the final leg to Perth across the Nullarbor, and some of the best scenery in the world.   Book early to ensure accommodation across the Nullarbor, see the admin and accommodation sheet.

Rider Responsibilities:  Each participant is responsible for their own safety.  Each participant is encouraged to uphold all road rules and observe State speed limits and to ride responsibily.  Each participant is responsible for safeguarding their health and wellbeing and are to ensure that their rider third party insurance is current and that they have full personal insurance covering all contingencies relating to accidents, sickness and recovery of their own motorcycles should a breakdown occur.  The organiser will attempt to include a recovery vehicle and trailer for that purpose.  Participants are encouraged to notify the organiser on the appropriate included administration sheet of their requirements for accommodation.  The organiser will attempt to secure overnight accommodation for all participants who notify that they require accommodation.  Meals, fuel, entertainment and other personal requirements are the responsibility of each participant.  Please note that there is no fuel at Yalata.
