As long as children can not read, they depend on what they are give. They can not choose their own book. Children of that age have to be satisfied with what their parents, Neighbours think suits them. This provides an author or illustrator with a very special responsibility. A picture book illustrator will have to be conscious of the power and influence he has on children. He will have to search for or sub scribe to opinions on the development of children into adulthood.
I think ,this search is the way a picture book illustrator can develop his own expression his own style. A picture book illustrator who has developed a style proceeding from his own frustration is doing children a great injustice.Viewed in that light when it comes to illustrations in picture books ,the word ‘renewal’ is only then appropriate, when it is a new opinion on the development of children into adulthood .
NATURE AS STARTING POINT.
Nature as a stable fact and the basic of our existence, soon leads to an important part of drawing style. While growing up, the child has got a lot to learn. I consider it a logic thing to begin with the world, the universe and the sun. The sun that shines APON everything on earth, that gives everything colour. The sun the most important element the source of all life! In my work sunlight is never absent. But no sun without clouds. Because aren’t clouds a creation from the sun itself? Light and darkness are an inseparable unit.
This clearly directs my drawing style. But there is more! For a child that still has to learn ,why should we deform nature why romanticize, simplify and abstract it that early? I want to help children in their development into adulthood. Also the elements light/ dark and natural manifestation of things is part of my drawing style.
CULTURE AS STARTIG POINT
Apart from nature in our society we have to deal with culture as well. With culture I mean everything we human beings add to nature. In contrast to nature, which is a stable fact ,culture is changeable. Cars, buildings, tables, chairs and so on, all that is strongly tied for time. That means that cultural elements in my drawings will only be portrayed in their basic manifestations; a house only for protection a chair just to sit on a heater as a source of heat.
FAIRY TALES AS A STARTING POINT
The little child has to find his way in the labyrinth of emotions and its feelings and relation to other people. The elements light/ dark and the natural manifestations of things were just a technical matter. How do I portray it? When it comes to emotions, the aspect of contents, is more important; What are the emotions of the illustrator? This too has to do with the style of drawing.
While nature is a stable fact, fairy tales have the eternal truth. Not that fairy place, but the fairy tales that help children take their bearings in life. Fairy tales as stories with pure symbols; whereas light and dark are symbols nature good and evil are symbols of fairy tales. In this case we had better speak of portraying the fairy tales, than illustrating them. A fairy tale does not consist as much of a language of words, but language of images, just as our script originated from images.
Think of the hieroglyphics.Without going into importance of fairy tales for little children too much, I would like to give a few examples of how the portrayal of nation (understand intellect) and the recollection of an image (an emotion) . For example HANSEL and GRETEL, who are going into the forest, or other fairy tales in which people set out into the world to find happiness, to find the treasure or to fulfil a difficult quest, it is not about the notion ‘to search’ but about the recollection to of the image ‘to find your own way’.
Illustrating the departure is not a little ROAD into the forest, but more like portraying ‘the ROAD of life’. The forest in the fairly tales is connected to fears, losing one’s way and uncertainties. If we look APON the castle as a shelter, made by man (culture) and the forest as the subconscious (nature) than you know, that this vision leads to a different image. Little Red Riding-Hood brings food to her grandmother, living in a house under oak trees, surrounded by walnut trees. An image recollected by our Germanic ancestors. This is where Little Riding-Hood brought her offerings; Bread and wine emblem of the spirit and soul. That need to be united. And she brings this at her grandmother. In Iceland this grandmother is called EDDA, which stands for; ancient wisdom. With this knowledge, connected to my emotions and together with the light/dark contrast and the natural manifestations of things, that makes my drawing style complete.
