Meaning: “Julian” means “Youthful” (Greek), and Julien is a French spelling for it…  ^_^ The whole name comes from the Ewan McGregor characters Julien Sorel (Scarlet & Black) and Mark Renton (Trainspotting).

History: In ancient times, there was this chick named Helena.  Exactly what she was is unclear, but she had some relation to Jenova (entity of chaos, yada, yada, yada), as well as a potentially mythological substance called the philosopher's stone (and the dark jinni, Homunculus who is borne from it).  Those who know her as their ancestor consist of a select group who are still around today, and they worship her as their goddess.  They are a close-knit group/family and many of them will not even marry outside blood.  They are really just a cult, even if it's a long-standing one.

        Well, as it turns out, Helena requires sacrifices (or more likely, cult worshippers just like the idea of sacrifices.)  Like many cult-style followings, these sacrifices can be any number different things, animal or human, but Helena will not be satisfied with just this.  She really /does/ require lives and souls that will be her own.  What her idiotic followers don't realize is that these lives are /not/ to be sacrificed.  They continue their practices, however, and Helena goes about trying to stop them in her own ways.  However, the mentality seems impossible to kill.  These sacrifices are performed in a very particular manner, they must be members of the family, they must be directly conceived by Helena, and the sacrifice must take place on the child’s sixth birthday.  Where did these rules come from?  Don’t ask me, it's worse than religion.  -_-;

        The trouble is, it is difficult to perform such sacrifices.  A woman or family may agree to have a sacred child but…well, you try killing off your six-year-old.  Yeah.  Exactly.

        So, around the early 1970s, Helena was getting a little peeved, as she hadn’t received a sacred child in quite a while.  People kept fleeing, because nobody was getting the picture.  And now belongings were being stolen and destroyed, tragic deaths were happening left and right, and all sorts of misfortune was befalling the followers of Helena.  Something needed to be done.  So someone came up with a brilliant idea.  It was proposed to the lovely Shera Renton that she could have twins!  One belonging to her and her husband, and the other would be Helena’s.  Shera was not of Helena's blood, but got involved with the cult activity through her drug addictions. Then, when the time came, Helena’s child would be sacrificed, and they could still have one.  She took the offer, much to the relief of the others.

        Thus, Julien and Mabel were born.  Growing up, Mabel was always favored, however unconsciously.  She was a wonderful child, probably because she was sacred.  Both children were raised without the knowledge of Helena or exactly what it meant to be in their family.  They also, unfortunately, caught sight of more than a few disturbing situations, and grew very close to each other as, apparently, the only ones who were sane among so much insanity.

        On their sixth birthday, after the party, Julien was put to sleep with drugs and Mabel was sacrificed.  Julien woke up in time to catch the tail end of it, holding onto his sister and begging for an explanation as her soul left her body.  Probably due to a number of factors, Mabel’s soul never went to Helena.  It went into Julien’s body instead, to be hidden away in the darkest corners, where no one would ever know about it.  No one except Mabel and a furious Helena.

        It was decided, then, that Julien’s memory of his entire life up to that point had to be taken away.  He must not remember ever having a sister.  He would start over, and his parents would shield him from everything until he was ready.

        Well, his father was bitter that the favored child had died, and chose not to associate much with Julien.  His mother was secretly quite traumatized by what had happened, and alternately smothered Julien with love and then fixed him cold negligence.  It was an unstable situation, but Julien did get a few random talents out of it (most of which he resents <.<;).

        He actually got started on heroin when he was twelve.  He was having a few problems, naturally, and his mother was rather fond of the substance.  Rather than getting him any real mental help, she opted to fix him up with a little shot now and then.  Of course, he quickly got addicted, started trafficking a few years later, and by the time he left the house for good when he was 16, it was too late for anyone to reveal anything of Helena to him.  He wandered about Europe for a while, becoming a fairly successful independent drug dealer, and avoiding the many enemies he made along the way.  It was a dangerous lifestyle but he got by, and he managed to do it while retaining an amazing amount of naivety and ideality.  Go figure.

        Yes, well, he ended up at Llanon, finally, and only planned to pass through.  However, he made many friends there, and that was something he’d never had before.  In his business, you didn’t have friends, only associates.  But no one at Llanon was interested in that.  It was a unique place altogether, and when he met Eriya, the love of his life, it all went to hell.  He was staying.  Even having to deal with Eriya's jealous and murderous brother, Cojin.

        Things were okay for a while (as okay as they get), right up until Vail (a man from Eriya’s past) recognized Mabel locked away inside Renton, and performed a mini-experiment that caused her to begin her release.  And, as you can probably imagine, she was feeling bitter.  Not long afterward, he discovered that there was a woman named Emily who sought revenge on him for the overdose and death of her former roommate.  Zei got a hold of him on behalf of Emily, but was quickly charmed by his many... x.x; charms.  In the meantime Mabel was slowly coming out of him, and he was regaining a lot of memories that he'd lost.  Just when it seemed he was screwed over and his life was Mabel's, the two of them were magically separated by a group of mazoku from Zei's past.  Soon after, Renton became Mabel/Helena's target as well.

        But Vail wasn't done with him.  Wanting to create a puppet of Jenova, and finding Renton's heritage most compatible, he injected Renton with Jenova's cells.  Renton spent a little while being a puppet, while Vail worked to unseal Jenova from the planet, using him at times.  Rents finally got rid of the cursed cells when Jerome used him to reseal Jenova.  Renton's soul was taken as the price, and now keeps the seal on Jenova, within the planet.

        Renton just sort of moseys through life, getting dumped a lot and dodging murder attempts, as well as regularly taking the role of the gods' plaything.
