Living to Do

"Drink wine. This is life eternal. This, all that youth will give to you. It is the season for wine, roses and drunken friends.

Be happy for this moment. This moment... is your life."

>>why a list?

When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds:  your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world.  Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive and you discover yourself to be a greater person then you ever dreamed yourself to be.

I started my lifelist on January 1st, 2001.  The purpose was to map out and strategize my life by focusing myself upon a series of events and actions that would define who I am and set my course upon a path of exploration, knowledge, adventure and travel.  Inspired by like lists that I stumbled upon while searching the internet, each item serves as a reminder to my own mortality and as a challenge to myself to face my fears and a reminder to enjoy life by expanding my boundaries.  I grow a bit more each time I get the privilege of marking another item off of my list.  No one thing is more important then the next, each serves a purpose and often gives birth to items of similar ilk, each one strengthens my resolve to accomplish more and more.  Much like a business plan in the corporate world, each item is weighed and measured in terms of cost versus benefit and is pursued based upon how it is scored or seen in my eyes in terms of importance and overall impact.

Having spent way to much time and effort pursuing a career that although beneficial from a financial standpoint, far from life affirming.  Granted it is not an employer?s job to make their positions life affirming and that work in and of itself is good.  Few be that finds work which interweaves itself with ones life purpose, however by taking a few simple steps and following through on them, you can enjoy many of the joys this life has to offer.

Take a minute and think about the things you want to accomplish.  It doesn?t matter what it is or how silly others may perceive it.  After all, this isn?t their list, it?s yours.

Write them down.  Almost like signing a contract with yourself, writing down your goals and dreams gives them their first breath of life.

Research them.  Talk to others who have already accomplished this.  Read books, magazines about what you are after.  It doesn?t matter if it?s buying your first home, speaking in public, learning a second language or jumping out of airplanes.  The more research and homework you do, the better you will understand and more comfortable you will be when the time comes or the opportunity presents itself to take action.  You will be amazed how many people you will find that are eager to help you in your quest.  Simply talking about your goals will bring people who can help you your way.

Read your list daily.  Reading your list daily keeps it alive.  Resist the urge to cross items off your list as whims of the moment.  Instead leave them but focus your energies on other items.  After all you put them there in the first place because they interested you.  They could evolve instead something else entirely or lead you to something else.
