14 oz Lightweight Packs
|
Hello everyone! I have sewed up a couple of lightweight backpacks (2 units of green and 2 units of khaki/mustard color). They weigh in at about 12.75 ozs (green) to 13.5 ozs (khaki - basic, no frills pack) and accessories like sternum, hipbelt and bungee cords would add about 4 ozs total. Fabrics used are predominantly 200d coated oxford nylon and 330d DR nylon (for the khaki packs) so it should last quite a bit more than the lighterweight, 70d or 2 oz fabric packs. Sizing is Medium and optimumly fits people with torso lengths (TL) of 20" or below, that is if the webbing belt is used, otherwise w/o the belt, it can easily fit to a TL > 20" (up to 22"). The shoulder pad length is shy of 13" long so exceptionally thick-chested hikers may find this to be quite short.
Fabrics used were 200d coated oxford nylon (green) and 330d coated double ripstop nylon (khaki) for the body and shoulder pad sleeves, 2.0 oz coated navy ripstop nylon for the extension 10.5"-long extension collar and medium-guage navy blue mesh for the side and front pockets. The body tapers from bottom (12.75") to top (11.5") and is 23.5 in height (excluding the extension collar). The pack depth is a bit over 7" and somewhat has a contour cut at the bottom portion to better acommodate a sleeping bag. The extension collar is 10.5" in height. The front mesh pocket measures 16.5" high by 12" (median) wide with 2, 7/8"-wide pleats. The side mesh pockets measure 10.5" high by 7.5" wide and is elevated (2.5") from the bottom so that it wouldn't be directly scuffed when putting the pack on and off the ground. There are 2 pleats here that are 1.5" wide. The shoulder pads measure 2.375" wide by 0.375" thick by 13" long and is straight cut with tapering ends.
The pack is kinda like a rucksack but with the option of adding a hipbelt and sternum strap. There's also a detachable bungee lacing system at the front and sides to aid in compression and to secure some loose clothing items.
Main packbag capacity is about 2000 c.i., extension collar about 800 c.i., front pocket about 350 c.i. and side mesh pockets about 400 c.i. so the total pack capacity is about 3550 c.i. I would like to put this pack in the size M category. A size L would probably have an additional height of 2-3 inches.
Please excuse the whole pack photos as they are not high resolution. I have included some close-ups though of key areas of the pack to show quality and worksmanship. If you're interested in any these, kindly refer to the following photos as they tell more of the story, email me at rodneyspacks@yahoo.com if you have any inquiries or need more description of the pack.
Any comments and/or suggestions are most welcome. Pictures of the green packs to come asap. Note that the pack pictures above are those of the khaki pack (though it looks green, pls. refer to close-ups for more accurate color rendition, thanks).
