Shape of My Heart
By: Ruby
They drove in silence for ten minutes. She was pissed and he knew it. Damn it! One night alone that's all she asked for. She understands his job is important and he could get called it at amoments notice, but why tonight? It was their night!! It had been six months to the day since they met. They had planned to celebrate at The Saloon where they met and then he promised to take her dancing, but at the last minute he gets called into the office, a problem with the last case.
And then the song came on. Their song… the one they danced to the night they met.
He deals the cards as a meditation.
And those he plays never suspect.
He doesn't play for the money he wins.
He don't play for respect.
The minute she heard the song she just couldn't be angry any more. It was a sign. She looked over at him and he had this look almost like he knew what she was thinking. Then he got a huge grin and his
dimples…ahh those dimples.
He deals the cards the cards to find the answer.
The sacred geometry of chance
The hidden law of a probable outcome
The numbers lead a dance
The next thing she knew he was swerving across the lanes of traffic and pulled to a sudden stop along the right side of the road.
What's wrong? Why are..." she didn't even finish the last question and he was out his door. He came around to her side and opened the door as he leaned in he asked her to turn the radio up.
"Ezra, are you feeling okay?" she asked as she complied with his request.
He put out his hand and with thhe sweetest smile... the same one that won her over all those months ago, "Darlin, can I have this dance?" That was it…she lost all control and the tears welled up. She gave him her hand and he pulled her close to him.
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that the diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
As they held each other and swayed to the music all the anger she had just melted away. How on earth could she stay angry with this wonderful man? This man who has given so much of himself in the short period of time they've known each other.
He may play the jack of diamonds
He may lay the queen of spades
He may conceal a king in his hand
While the memory of it fades
As they danced the memory of the night they met came back…as if it were just yesterday. Her girlfriend was meeting a man and his friends for a drink at the local bar and said friend wanted her to come along for support. They weren't there five minutes and her friend took off to a private booth with tall, dark, and studdley. Thankfully his six friends were wonderful. In fact they were quite entertaining, but there was one that caught her eye right from the start. He just had this way of looking into her eyes, like he was
reading all about her.
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
That's not the shape, the shape of my heart
As that first night went on it seemed as if the rest of the room didn't exist except for them. They talked about their jobs, friends, family, the books they'd read. The more they talked the more she felt as if he was opening up to her, as he never had to anyone before. And then this song came on.
"I love this song," she said through a sigh.
With that he stood up and put out his hand "Darlin', can I have this dance?"
Oh, they danced all right. He held her then just as he was now and she knew there was no going back.
And if I told you that I loved you
You'd maybe think there's something wrong
I'm not a man of too many faces
The mask I wear is one
And even here standing along the highway with the cars going by and honking…they still were in their own little world, just as they were that night. God, how she loves this man. If she could spend the rest
of her life in his arms she would not ask for another thing.
Well, those who speak know nothing
And find out to their cost
Like those who curse their luck in too many places
And those who fear are lost
As the song and their few moments' alone came to an end she knew she should be thankful. What they have, people search their whole lives for and never find. If a dance along the road is all she can have of this night than she gladly will take it. He promised her they would dance tonight and as the sun sets on them and his arms are wrapped around her…she wouldn't change one moment of this night.
I know the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
But that's not the shape of my heart
That's not the shape, the shape of my heart
That's not the shape, the shape of my heart
~The End~
*The song used was 'Shape of My Heart' by Sting.
