I am currently messing about with a few distros in Virtualbox and thought it might be interesting to do a side-by-side comparison of the 2 most popular distros right now - PCLinuxOS 2007 and Ubuntu 'Feisty' 7.04.
Part 1 of the comparison is a look at the installation process onto a blank hard drive using the automated install options in each distro: http://www.mediafire.com/?bnot1m9d93d
Part 2 is a look at how each fares installing on top of each other ie, I install PCLOS on an Ubuntu drive and Ubuntu on a PCLOS drive. Whereas both distros performed equally favourably in the first test, Ubuntu wins this test hands down: http://www.mediafire.com/?80zdbznwhbr
Part 3 completes the installation comparison as I install each on a Windows drive. Both distros perform well, perhaps Ubuntu just has the edge: http://www.mediafire.com/?bzgz1jx2m1g
Consider these comparisons as a guide to installation as they cover most eventualities. I will actually use them to provide a definitive guide to installing PCLOS in the future.
Next I will compare the 'control centres' in each distro and other features like installed applications. I will also create a tutorial on using Gparted to partition your drive ready for a treble-boot scenario with Windows, PCLOS and Ubuntu.
