Chelsea out as Barca cruise

Barcelona were always in control having established a 2-1 lead from the first-leg at Stamford Bridge and on home soil, it was the mesmeric Ronaldinho that ultimately decided the outcome with a fine effort in the 78th minute.

Chelsea were generously awarded a penalty in injury time, which Frank Lampard finished with aplomb but when all the talking ceased, it was Barcelona that proved they have the edge over their Premiership counterparts.

Pre-match and the Camp Nou clash had taken on a mantle that transcended the normal boundaries of sport.

Mourinho pitted against Frank Rijkaard was just the subtext as the game became a battle of aesthetics versus efficiency, of the ruthless over the flamboyant; all played out against a backdrop of Uefa probes and warnings, cat-calling and the type of histrionics normally best kept to the set of a soap opera.

The game did not disappoint but neither did it sparkle, with the exception of Ronaldinho, as the hype had suggested it might.

Mourinho's decision to employ a troika of attacking talent in support of lone front man Didier Drogba saw Chelsea match their Catalan hosts in terms of intent as Joe Cole, Damien Duff and Arjen Robben were all given licence to roam.

The early sparring saw a surprisingly open affair ensue as great slabs of field were left free to run into as Barcelona soon settled in to a bewitching rhythm.

Chelsea too were not without their moments but the first opportunity of note saw Petr Cech called into a comfortable save from Thiago Motta's daisy-cutter before Ronaldinho burst from the shadows to introduce his presence with a step-over which left Paulo Ferreira bewitched.

It was the genius of the Brazilian that conjured the first real consternation for Chelsea as his sumptuous little flick played in Lionel Messi but the Argentine's drive was blocked by Ricardo Carvalho, who was then needed to be at his best again to thwart another rapid Barca break.

Drogba pulled off the shackles of Oleguer to get in a header on the home side's goal from Robben's free kick but Victor Valdes gathered easily before Chelsea's tormentor-in-chief from the first-leg, Messi, came out of an innocuous challenge holding his hamstring and the night was denied one of its chief protagonists.

Messi was substituted in the 23rd minute and the remainder of the half became at times a one-man virtuoso show from Ronaldinho, who looked like he could have been playing beach football with friends such was his enjoyment and complete control of proceedings when in possession.

With the ball becoming a commodity Chelsea saw little of, Barca were dominant but the killer pass eluded the home side as Oleguer wasted a decent opening with a tepid poke at Cech.

On a rare foray Duff struck a half volley wide before Robben cut inside onto his left foot and from the angle brought a save from Valdes.

Set-pieces were always likely to expose the one chink in Barca's armoury and as the half drew to its close, one such dead-ball saw John Terry flick on to Cole, who stretched a leg and lobbed the ball onto the top of Valdes' goal.

Aware that two goals would be required to have any chance of progression Chelsea started on the front-foot after the interval but with Lampard restricted in a holding role, Mourinho's side were too easily contained.

At the other end, an advanced Rafael Marquez forced Terry into an archetypal block to repel the Mexican's volley from the edge of the area.

Mourinho needed just ten minutes of the second half to come to the conclusion that changes were needed and acting decisively, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Hernan Crespo were introduced at the expense of Duff and Drogba.

It was, though, still Barcelona that looked the likelier as Samuel Eto'o took his chance early and forced Cech into a smart parry with Terry then needing to stretch every sinew to repel another Barca counter.

Just past the hour mark and a trademark Crespo run set him free in the box brilliantly, Cole's cross from the left was equal to it, but the striker's finish at the near post was agonisingly wide and Chelsea's best chance of the night was lost.

Although Chelsea were impressive enough defensively, in truth, Mourinho's men were a side devoid of the creative wit needed to prise open a Barcelona defence that was never unduly worried.

When the goal arrived 12 minutes from time it was no surprise it came from Ronaldinho, nor was it a surprise that it was a creation entirely of his own making; an exquisite blend of power, balance, pace and beauty.

A waltz past Carvalho saw a path to goal emerge and bouncing off the robust shoulder of Terry and maintaining his balance, Ronaldinho then slammed the ball low and beyond Cech to ensure that the best side, in both legs, progressed.

Barcelona still had time to hit the post as Eto'o got behind a tired Chelsea backline before in injury time, an advanced Terry was adjudged to have been 'fouled' in the box - somewhat generously - by a stretching Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

A previously peripheral Lampard stepped up to send Valdes the wrong way with the calmest of penalties but it was to prove the final moment of a game that saw the best side in Europe set the standard for the rest.

Barca lonked with PSV random

Written on 1 Mar 2006 by Liam fcb

Barcelona are being linked with a summer move for PSV Eindhoven attacker Jefferson Farfan.

Barca_badge.jpg The Catalans reportedly see the fleet-footed Peruvian international as a sound replacement for Henrik Larsson who will return to Sweden in the summer.

Whether PSV would be willing to allow Farfan to leave is a different matter.

The player has caught the eye this season and will next week face Lyon in the Champions league as his club bid to turn around a 1-0 first-leg defeat.

Key in Alves Deal?

Written on 1 Mar 2006 by Liam fcb

According to reports, Javier Saviola may have a big part to play in any deal taking Daniel Alves to Barcelona.

saviola_shout.jpg The Argentinian is currently on loan to Sevilla from the Catalan giants, and it is thought that if Barca were to co-operate in making that deal permanent, the Southern outfit may be more open to allowing Alves to move in the opposite direction.

Barca have long been linked with a move for Alves, with earlier reports claiming that they had secured an option to sign the Brazilian full-back.

Liverpool have also watched Alves in the past, although no deal ever materialised.

Alves possesses a Spanish passport so would not fill one of Barcelona's valuable non-EU squad places.

This was said on this site as a possibillity a few days ago ''Barca may offer Saviola in a part-exchange deal with Sevilla for thier right back Daniel Alves''.

Zaragoza fined after Eto'o abuse

Written on 1 Mar 2006 by Liam fcb

Real Zaragoza have been fined 9,000 Euros after some of their fans aimed racist taunts at Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o in Saturday's Primera Liga match.

eto_vs_sociedad.jpg Eto'o tried to leave the pitch in the second half but was persuaded to stay by players and coach Frank Rijkaard.

Fined

Zaragoza were fined 600 Euros last season after some of their fans directed abuse at Eto'o.

They were also fined a similar amount last month after some fans directed racist insults at Real Betis's Brazilian forward Robert.

Zaragoza put out an announcement on the PA system asking fans to refrain from making offensive remarks at opposition players.

But the abuse of Eto'o continued until the end of the game, which Barcelona won 2-0.

Appeal

In an official statement, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said the club had 10 days to appeal against the decision.

Zaragoza are trying to identity and punish the fans responsible for the racist abuse aimed at Eto'o.

"We are calling for all the authorities, including the police, to help us track down the people who carried out these acts," the club said on their website.

"Those identified will be firmly punished and the results of the investigation will be sent to the authorities."

BlauGrana target Henry again

Barcelona make fresh contact with Arsenal's Henry reps
tribalfootball.com - February 26, 2006

Barcelona have made fresh contact with the representatives of Arsenal captain Thierry Henry in recent days.

DiarioSport says Barca made a new approach to Henry's reps after his performance against Real Madrid and the increased speculation over an imminent bid from their great Spanish rivals.

Barca president Joan Laporta is determined to sign Henry ahead of Real should Arsenal make him available at the end of this season.

Chivu '' The next star in the BlauGrana''

Barcelona aim to land Roma's Chivu for knockdown fee
tribalfootball.com - February 26, 2006

Barcelona are ready to take advantage of a buyout clause in the contract of Roma defender Cristian Chivu at the end of this season.

Barca coach Frank Rijkaard is reviving his bid to sign the Romania international after originally being priced out of a deal for the defender when he was moving from Ajax three years ago.

DiarioSport says while Chivu is contracted until 2008, his deal includes a buyout clause this summer set at just £6 million. The clause kicks in from July 1.

Barca have also considered Udinese's Brazilian Felipe, but Rijkaard favours Chivu and has convinced president Joan Laporta to bid for the defender at the end of this season.

Exclusive interview with Leo Messi

''The next Diego Maradona''

From promise to star

Lionel Messi made his first team debut in the 2003-4 season against Porto, then managed by Jose Mourinho and the following season, on May 1st 2005 he made his mark at the Nou Camp with a goal against Albacete which made the then 17-year-old the youngest player ever to score for the club in the league. He really caught the eye in Europe when he started the Joan Gamper Trophy against Juventus and won plaudits both from his own manager and the Italian club's Fabi Capello.

Messi took another big step in his career with his performance against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu earlier this season, when he showed that he was certainly not afraid of the big stage and put in a marvellous magic game together with Ronaldinho and Eto'o to destroy the old enemy. Wednesdays game against Chelsea, applauded throughout the footballing world was just the latest success in a career that seems destined for many, many more.

Leo Messi is not letting the praise heaped on him from the football world after his midweek performance go to his head. He may be being hailed as the next great thing, but the youngster is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

In this exclusive interview with fcbarcelona.com, the hero of Stamford Bridge makes it clear that he's very much aware that he's "still achieved nothing" and that the secret to more success is "to keep on working hard".

What's your view on the Zaragoza result?

"It was a tough game against an opponent who were well organised on the pitch, but finally our hard work earned us an important win at a difficult ground, that gives us three more points in the push for the league and keeps the chasing teams at a distance".

The team seems to have recovered its good form again.

"Yes, after a couple of slip ups, we're back in the driving seat again".

Have you had time to reflect on the Chelsea game and your performance?

"Well I always try and stay calm about these things, but I'm certainly pleased with how things went, both for me and for the team as a whole. It was a good result and Im happy with all the praise we got, but I'm keeping cool and just continuing to work hard".

Is it hard to keep you feet on the ground after you've been so widely praised for your performance ? How do you keep things in context ?

"Well of course it's nice to be spoken about so well and it makes you feel good, but I think that I've yet to achieve anything in the game, and the team too, we've not won anything with just that one result. The only thing you have to do is keep on working hard - there's a lot of league games left and the second leg with Chelsea. Nothing's decided yet".

Was the Chelsea game your best so far ?

"Yes, definitely my best. It was one of the most important too because of who we were playing, just like the Madrid game. They are two big names and they are important games to play in".

You were kicked about a bit a Stamford Bridge. Does it bother you that Mourinho accused you of play-acting ?

"No, not really. The truth is I didn't listen to what he said because I know I wasn't acting. My team mates know that too. I've still got the bruises. I felt the tackle and I know I wasn't putting anything on. I'm not a diver. If he saw it differently well they're two different ways of seeing it".

You are two teams with different styles, you and Chelsea. How did you see the game as a whole ?

"Maybe in the first half we played too much at their game. The pitch was very heavy and that made it a tough game and a bit scrappy, which suited more their style of play. In the second half we started to get more ball and play to feet and although the pitch was poor , we started to feel more comfortable and create chances".

The tie isn't decided yet, as you said. Do you think Chelsea might represent an even bigger threat away from home ?

"We have to be on our guard. We know what happened last year when we won the first leg 2-1 here at the Nou Camp. Chelsea have players who can score at any time and we have to bear in mind that we're not through yet. Even so, we're playing well and we all want to make the next round".

It looks as if their more mental strength this year and the team are determined to get through this time round.

"We don't want a repeat of last year, that's for certain. We don't want to go out at this stage and are determined to progress to the quarter finals".

It seems to be harder than ever to win the double here in Spain and the last time a team won two successive league was in the Van Gaal era with Barca. Winning league and Champions League also seems to be pretty rare. Do you think the era of a single team dominating the scene is over ?

"It looks like that. When we started the season we were after all three trophies and it was a tough break to get knocked out of the cup. We're still on course in the league though and with a win against Chelsea we must be in with a shout for the Champions League too".

Have you started to think about the World Cup yet ?

"No, not yet. There's still a while to go.We have an important few months ahead of us before that comes around and although the Argentina game this week makes you realise that the World Cup is coming up, I'm concentrating on the big league and Champions League games ahead".

So when do you begin to focus on Germany ?

"When we've won everything here a t Barca !."

Txiki does not deny the interest by Diego Forlán

Echevarría seated in the theater box next to him and Perrín

26/02/06 03:00 h. The azulgrana technical secretary, Txiki Begiristain, did not discard the interest of the Barça by the goleador of the Villarreal Diego Forlán, although he indicated that this one is not the moment for speaking of draftees but who there will be to hope to that it concludes the season. Txiki defined to the Uruguayan like "a player who made an extraordinary campaign the year last and that in this one has recovered the goal". On his possible incorporation for the next campaign, in which Larsson will not be after having announced its draftee by the Swedish Helsingborg, it was limited to aim that "it is not moment for speaking from whom can come to the Barça and who no. The group either we have it done and or we will see what happened ' ".

President Joan Laporta did not go to the Romareda and in its place she was vice-president Alfons at the most representing Godall of the club. In a personal view, the ex- director was invited to the theater box Alexander Echevarría, who seated next to Txiki and the director Albert Perrín

Racist abuse mars 0-2 win

0-2, Larsson (81')

Two second half goals from Ronaldinho and Larsson were enough to give Barca the points at La Romereda in a 0-2 win marred by racist chanting from a section of the Zaragoza crowd.

Just as on Wednesday Barca overcame the team who'd knocked them out of last year's Champions League, so tonight they saw off Zaragoza who'd removed them from the Spanish Cup last month. It wasn't a classic performance by either team, but an intense tactical battle with few real goal scoring chances which was finally broken by a Ronaldinho penalty on 78 minutes. The negative part of the game was the racist abuse suffered by Samuel Eto'o which nearly caused him to leave the pitch. Ironically, the hold up in the game as the crowd were warned of their behaviour seemed to disrupt the Zaragoza defence's concentration and in the very next piece of action they gave away the penalty that was to lose them the game.

Cautious start

Rijkaard swapped his full backs from the Chelsea game with Sylvinho and Belletti coming in for Gio and Oleguer, but despite the two the Brazilians' attacking instincts it was a cautious beginning to the game, signalled from the start when Puyol and Marquez kept possession for the first 60 seconds or so of play. Zaragoza were content to give up possession and let the Barca defenders knock the ball about deep in the own half and although Deco and Motta patiently tried to probe Zaragoza's well-marshalled defence, oppportunities were clearly going to be at a premium. In fact, Messi had a half chance within the first five minutes, but his right foot shot went wide after he'd been put through by Deco.

Few chances

After the first quarter of an hour, Zaragoza finally upped the pace of their game a little and only a well timed tackle from Puyol stopped Cani when he was in on goal on 13 minutes. As the hosts loosened their grip, Barca also started to enjoy slightly more space, but chances were few and far between in the first half, with Motta shooting from distance with Barca's best effort, whilst Valdes did well to touch over an Ewerthon pile driver for the hosts. Zaragoza were choking Barca's creativity and not getting forward much themselves and it was the defences who came out top in the first 45 minutes, with neither keeper being worked particularly hard.

No change after the break

Zaragoza came out with a flurry of energy after the break, but the game soon returned to the plot of the first half, with Barca's attacking instincts being muzzled by some determined defending by the home team. On 54 minutes, Rijkaard brought off the tiring Motta for Van Bommel, but it was his second substitution of Messi for Larsson that was finally to prove the more decisive.

Racist chants

Before the Swede had the chance to show his mettle though, the incident that was to change the course of the game occurred. Barca won a corner on the right, but as Ronaldinho went to take it, the crowd took up racist chanting at Eto'o. Visibly upset by the abuse, Eto'o started to walk off the pitch and only the calming words of this teammates and the management kept him on. The stadium loudspeakers warned the crowd of the consequences of their behaviour and the game resumed after a break of a few minutes. Ronaldinho took the corner and the unmarked Edmilson smashed a shot in from the edge of the box. With his defence's concentration snapped there was nothing keeper Cesar could do and it was Albert Celades on the line who tipped the shot over. Red card for the ex-Barca man and penalty for Barca, which Ronaldinho coolly tucked away.

Eto'o and Larsson finish off the game

Two minutes later, Eto'o gave the racist idiots the best possible reply with a lovely first time cross to the front post, which Larsson met perfectly to make it 0-2. There was no way back for 10 man Zaragoza, but it wasn't all good news for Barca as Ronaldinho limped off with what looked to be an ankle injury. The win gives Barca a 9 point cushion over Valencia who play Getafe at home on Sunday evening.
