Mrs. Lewis Pre-K Class

Where learning and playing go hand in hand

Fine Motor Activities

Fine motor skills play a very important part in our classroom.  It is important for your child to engage in these types of activities so they are able to strengthen the muscles in their hands. These muscles are used throughout life in handwriting, cutting, picking things up etc. Below are a few activities that can help in these areas.

You can draw lines on a piece of paper or newspaper.  Have your child try to cut staying on the lines.  This is good for fine motor and scissor control.

Have your child cut out squares or rectangles from the comics in the Sunday paper.

Have your child roll out his/her name in play-doh.

Allowing your child to use a hole punch.  I tried this the other day in class and to my surprise it was very difficult for some.  This is a great activity for building those future writing muscles.

Have your child pick up the small holes punched and glue them on a sheet of construction paper.  Even picking up such small objects is great for fine motor skills.

Picking up any objects with tongs is great for fine motor.
