The story begins focusing the daily life of 14 year old Renton Thurston. He lives with his grandfather, Axel, works in his garage, attends school, and leads a very boring and unfulfilling life. As the son of the great military hero Adrock Thurston, Renton generally chafes under the expectations placed on him due to his parentage. We learn that his father died many years ago, leaving Renton to be raised by his older sister, Diane, until she too disappeared in a quest to continue their father’s work. Before her departure, Diane left Renton a compac drive. This device will from time to time display a single message, "Eureka". Renton’s only escape from his day to day drudgery is his ref board, a device that allows him to ride Trappa waves. He modeled the board after the one used by his idol, Holland, the leader of the independent militia known as Gekko State, and dreamed of one day escaping his dull life and joining Gekko State to live a life full of adventure. A dream he finally realizes when a strange girl named Eureka arrives with her LFO, the legendary Nirvash TypeZERO asking for repairs.
Renton falls for Eureka almost at first sight, he is greatly impressed with her piloting skills and fascinated with her intuitive understanding of LFO technology, particularly the Nirvash. Oddly enough, even though there is a port for one, the TypeZero does not appear to use a Compac Drive to interface with its human pilot as do all other LF0s. When Renton points this out, Eureka allows him to install his own compact drive, though nothing happens. Renton’s grandfather appears less enthused by Eureka’s presence, but seems to be willing to give her something he was hiding from everyone, a device called the "Amita Drive" that can bring the Nirvash to its full potential. Before the Amita drive could be installed, the military launched a missile attack against Axel’s garage. Eureka manages to get Renton and his grandfather out of the garage and then flees in the Nirvash to draw the fire of enemy LFOs away from them. Axel instructs Renton to deliver the Amita drive to Eureka to unleash the TypeZero’s full power. Rushing to reach her, Renton discovers he can now ref as never before even completing his first cut-back drop-turn, an extremely difficult ref maneuver. When he finally was able to fly to the Nirvash's cockpit and install the Amita Drive, in a desperate attempt to save Eureka from an attack from the military, he activated the Nirvash's powers provoking the mysterious phenomenon called "Seven Swell". It is interesting to note that immediately following the phenomenon, Eureka claims that the Nirvash spoke to her attributing the energy powering the Seven Swell to Renton. After that she asked him to join Gekko State and his grandpa reluctantly accepts his affirmative reply.
After a few weeks in Gekko State's ship and HQ, the Gekko-Go, Renton discovered life in there wasn't so exciting and glamurous as he thought. He was always doing menial jobs and suffering initiation pranks from his senior companions. His ability to co-pilot the Nirvash was initially limited by the nausea and vertigo he experienced at the high speeds achieved by the LFOs. Despite these limitations, both Holland and Mischa note a remarkable increase in the performance levels of the Type Zero and determine to allow Renton to remain as the co-pilot for the time being. This fact, unfortunately, did not seem to be improving his relationship with Eureka, as her adopted children. Maurice, Maeter and Linck always competed with him for her attention. They viewed him as a threat that could someday take her from them and did everything in their power to make his life miserable. As he passed through all of these ordeals, Renton eventually managed to find his place among the crew. He even managed able to prove himself as an LFO pilot and became a full fledged member of Gekko State.
But the Seven Swell phenomenon wasn't left unchecked by the government, and in order to attend this matter, they recommissioned Dewey Novak, an officer who was in jail and Holland's older brother, to his former position. After gaining his job back, he starts to assemble allies like Dominic Soleil, a young officer who became his right arm, and Anemone, a girl about the age of Eureka, and pilot of the LFO Nirvash Type theEND. She even fought against Eureka and Renton once, and was almost successful in bringing them down. Apparently Dewey is not just following orders form the army, but actually he has his own plans for Eureka, the Nirvash, and even Renton himself, who he addresses as "the son of the king".
As the military's hunt for Gekko State escalates, things start to get worse and worse for Renton. As he starts to realize the true meaning of fighting in a war for his life, as his relationship with Eureka begins to deteriorate, partly because his skills in piloting the Nirvash were surpassing hers, and as Holland started to hostilize him for apparently no reason (even when he is doing nothing wrong), he starts to get desperate to the point of leaving the Gekko-Go without telling anybody.
Wandering around the country, Renton met Charles and Ray, a couple of LFO freelancer pilots, and ended up living with them for a while in their ship, the Hakucho-go. The three passed their days together happily just like a family, but what Renton didn't knew is that they have unfinished business with Holland, and were hired in a mission to defeat Eureka and retrieve the Nirvash. After they discover his true identity, they tell him all the truth and assures they would accept any decision he would make, with no regrets. But Renton's mind in that moment was set only in one goal, to return to Eureka's side. With that in mind he leaves them.
Things in Gekko State wasn't any better. Eureka started to realize her true feelings for Renton, and was missing him to the point of even not being able to pilot the Nirvash. Everyone was blaming Holland for his treatment on him, and even his girlfriend, Talho, urged him to bring him back. Just after Holland left with his LFO in search for him, he discovered that the military was setting a blockade around the Gekko-Go, and immediately returns to plan their escape route. Annoyed with the fact that Holland broken his promise of bringing Renton back at any cost, she rushes alone in a ref board in search for him just to find another trap set ahead by Charles and Ray. Just when she was trying to contact Holland and co. in order to warn them, Renton returns to the Gekko-Go. When Charles was about to capture Eureka, Renton arrives with the Nirvash to save her. Reunited again, the pair used the power of the Amita Drive to defeat all of the enemies without leaving a single casualty.
But Charles and Ray didn't quit. They decided to change tactics and infiltrate by themselves on the Gekko-Go, but Holland thought ahead of them and prepared some contermeasures, like putting Eureka and Renton in confinement, with the excuse of punish them for disobedience, because he knew they were their main target. The fight against them were fierce, but in the end Charles was killed by Holland, and Ray managed to escape. Curiously, during the attack, the Nirvash started to move by itself, as if it was reacting to Renton and Eureka's moment of danger. Ray returned alone to the Hakucho-go and prepared a full-scale suicide attack against the Gekko-Go. Her intention was to take revenge on Holland, because he killed Charles, and on Eureka, because from her point of view, she was responsible for an accident in the past that made her unable to bear children, and stole Renton, who she loved as a son, from her.
Even without the help of Eureka, Renton or the Nirvash, the rest of the crew managed to defeat Ray, blowing her with her ship in the process, but Holland got himself seriously injured, and without supplies enough to replenish his blood, they had to recource to a transfusion. The only compatible donor was Renton, and Talho was against it at first, because for some reason, she didn't want Holland to receive blood from someone related to Diane, but in the end she was the one who asked Renton to save him. After the transfusion, Eureka told Renton that even though they became so close, she still didn't know much about him, and she wanted to hear more about his life, but when he asked her the same, she faltered.
Dark secrets from the past were kept from Renton, and they were about to be unveiled, and so the story continues...

Fullmetal Alchemist is a Sci-fi manga set in the early 20th century in a country called Amestris in an alternate-historical Earth with technology dating from early 20th century Europe. In this alternate world, the pseudoscience of alchemy is heavily used in conjunction with acretian soul wanderers, but takes on a further fantastic element not seen in real-life alchemy. Real-world alchemists attempted to transmute gold from lesser metals. In the fictional world of the series, alchemy becomes the science of transmuting matter into different matter through the use of transmutation circles—based on real-world science, yet also magical, with seemingly infinite uses. Talented alchemists may apply to take a State Alchemist test to join the Amestris military's State Alchemists.
Edward and Alphonse Elric were children living in the rural village of Resembool in the country of Amestris. Their father, Hohenheim a talented alchemist, had left home when Edward was very young and Alphonse was still an infant. Years later, their mother, Trisha Elric, died of a terminal illness. After their mother's death, they lived with Winry and her grandmother until finding a Sensei (teacher) to teach them alchemy. After completing training, the came home with the intent of reviving their mother with the transmutation circle they found in ther fathers notes and made the attempt soon after acquiring the circle. However, this attempt failed, resulting in a twisted mass of flesh and bone at the cost of Edward's left leg and Alphonse's entire body. In a desperate effort to save his brother, Edward sacrificed his right arm to affix his brother's soul to a suit of armor. After that, Edward's left leg and right arm are fitted with two sets of Automail, a type of advanced prosthetic limb. In the original Japanese, the term "Fullmetal" is used to describe a person who is stubborn. In the series it is often attributed by minor characters to Ed's automail arm and leg, or Al's armor body. In the sixth manga, it is revealed that when an alchemist becomes a State Alchemist, they are given a special title. Edward's title was Fullmetal, making him Fullmetal Alchemist.
A State Alchemist by the name of Roy Mustang arrives during the failed human transmutation in response to letters the boys had sent out seeking information about their father (in the hopes that they could get the attention of their father so that he would come home). (Note: This event occurred differently in the manga. In that version, Mustang was in charge of recruiting new State Alchemists after the disastrous events of Ishbal caused many State Alchemists to leave the military service in disgust. A typo in the military records sent Mustang to Risembool in search of "Edward Elric, age 31." He was dismayed to find a crippled 11 year old instead, but wound up making the recruitment offer anyway.) After seeing their skill at alchemy, Mustang suggested that the way for the two boys to achieve their goals would be to become State Alchemists and work for him. Spurred on by the man's proposal, Edward set out to become a State Alchemist, enabling him to use the resources available to State Alchemists to discover a way to restore what he and Alphonse had lost. The brothers eventually learn of the Philosopher's Stone and set off in search of it as a means to restore their bodies. Along the way they discover secrets about the Philosopher's Stone they never wanted to know; and, find other people who seek it as well, doing almost whatever it takes to get their hands on it.

Move over Great Teacher Onizuka, there is a new teacher in town. Meet 23 year-old Kumiko Yamaguchi (Yankumi), a young teacher fresh out of college and ready to make a difference in the Japanese education system. But despite her innocent and unfashionable appearance, she's got a secret that would make even GTO's Onizuka shrudder. One of the biggest surprises in 2002 Japanese entertainment was the live action TV show entitled Gokusen. This series was based upon the Gokusen manga by Kozueko Morimoto which was first published in 2002 and continues to be serialized in Shueisha's You comic anthology. Similar to GTO, Gokusen was transformed to a live action Japanese TV series and revolves around the "not-so-ordinary" school life of Kumiko Yamaguchi and her students.
The story of Gokusen begins as Kumiko starts her first teaching job at an all-boys' high school. Unfortunately, she is assigned to become the homeroom teacher for class 3-D, which is filled with delinquent and dangerous students. Other teachers warn her about their behavior and to be especially careful of the class leader, Shin Sawada, who was expelled from junior high school for punching a teacher. But, Kumiko is determined to win their respect and become the motivational teacher she has always dreamed of being. However, her glasses, childish hairstyle, and out-of-date appearance lead the students of 3-D to believe she will be an easy target for teasing. Despite the class's attempts to get rid of her, Kumiko still has no intention of quitting just yet.
Outside of school, Kumiko also has a secret life that her students nor co-workers are aware of. She is actually a fourth generation family member and heir to the Ohedo Ikka (Kuroda Ikka in the manga version), a powerful yakuza group in Tokyo. Kumiko's parents died when she was just in elementary school and moved into the Ohedo clan since her grandfather was her only living relative. Influenced by those around her, she grew up learning how to fight, maintain a tough attitude, and to speak with a rough tongue. But Kumiko wanted to fulfill her father's dream of becoming a teacher. However, due to school district and PTA regulations, she must keep the fact that she has any ties to the yakuza underground a secret.
Expecting Kumiko to cry and run away, the class leader, Shin, and the other students in 3-D realize that she won't be an easy teacher to get rid of. Kumiko's fighting skills and "yakuza-style" mannerisms are revealed through her natural personality, although she desperately tries to conceal them. However, it is with the skills she learned in the yakuza world that enable her teach her students. Whether it's literally knocking some sense into her students or physically battling those that threaten to harm them, she is willing to stake everything for them. Although Kumiko remains a mystery to her students, they slowly begin to open up and respect her.
Gokusen has a line-up of popular Japanese actors and actresses such as Yukie Nakama, (Ring 0 Birthday) who has been praised for her performance as the lead role of the yakuza teacher in Gokusen. Arashi pop idol Jun Matsumoto (New Kindaichi Shonen no Jinkembo) portrayed the delinquent class leader, Shin Sawada, and ex-Morning Musume leader Yuko Nakazawa made her appearance as the school nurse in the series. Even though these celebrities are not new the world of Japanese entertainment, the success of Gokusen seemed to paved the way to even more stardom.
Although the series ended last year, the popularity of the series inspired an additional special episode, Gokusen Returns, which aired this past December. Unlike other popular Japanese live-action TV series about teachers and students, Gokusen is based upon an original manga series. Therefore it is questioned if it will follow the same route as the manga of GTO, which spawned from a live-action TV series to an animated series and theatrical movie release. However, Gokusen's story differs from GTO in its own unique way that contributes to the success of the series. Unlike Onizuka, Kumiko does not appear to be strong or "cool" and hides the fact that she has ties to the yakuza underground. She uses her own strength and ideals to discipline her resistant students. Also, while Onizuka's physical battles were replaced with sarcastic wit and humor in the live-action version, Kumiko's character has to whip out all the kicks and punches which adds more excitement to the series. Add in humor and a romance plot between Kumiko and a police officer (the yakuza's "enemy") to Gokusen, and viewers can see that this storyline has a little for everyone.
