Domestic Cats (Felis catus domesticus) were first domesticated over 5000 years ago, and have now become the most popular pet in the world. They live on every continent except Antarctica, and have evolved over time to fit comfortably where ever they might choose to live.
They were first domesticated by the Egyptians at around 3000BC, and were worshiped as gods. It started when the Egyptians had rodent problems, and the cats slowly began to wonder into the cities and hunt all the unwanted vermin. So you can imagine that over time the Egyptian people let the wild cats into their homes, to keep as pets.
Soon the Cat was thought to be a god, being called Mau, which also means the sun. They also thought that it was good for your health if you had a happy purring cat sleeping in your home. And if you were caught for killing a Mau, you would be killed at once. Cats were not even aloud to leave Egyptian borders.
Cats were smuggled to the Romans, the Gaels, the Celts, and later to Europeans, where they spread world wide.
Cat’s history was not always so relaxing and luxurious. Back in the Middle Ages, cats were thought to be evil spirits and helpers of Satin and witches. Cats suffered by being beaten by brooms, starved, and burned along side of accused witches and demons. The cat population was almost wiped out completely.
Thankfully cat killing and hating ended when people began to stop witch hunting. And soon they became a favorite house pet once again.
Soon different variations and mutations of cats were seen all over the world. In Asia the famous Siamese, Balinese, and Himalayan soon appeared. In America the Main Coon and the American Curl Cat.
