Nico in shock England call up! (21/12/06)

Leicestershire wicketkeeper Paul Nixon has been sensationally named in England’s one-day squad for the triangular series involving Australia and New Zealand early in the New Year. The 36 year old is called up due to the awful form of Kent 'keeper Geriant Jones and will battle it out with Notts' Chris Read for a starting spot.

This marks a glorious 2006 for 'Nico' as he was simply superb with bat and gloves for the County and it was probably the finest season of his long career. Nixon has also been awarded a well deserved benefit for 2007 and his masses of enthusiam, character and energy can only have a positive effect in the England camp. Even though Paul has never represented his country at international level, he did tour Sri Lanka and Pakistan with England 6 years ago when he was at Kent and this shock news is just what Nixon deserves.

When I first watched Paul Nixon make his Leicestershire as a teenager versus the touring Australians in 1989, I was convinced he was an England player of the future and now, 17 years later, it looks like he will get an very overdue chance to display his talents on the top stage.

Unforunately, there is no room in the squad for Stuart Broad, who is with the ECB Academy in Perth, as England have opted instead for Hampshire's Chris Tremlett.

Maddy signs for Warwickshire (31/10/06)

Darren Maddy has turned down the offer of a new two year contract at Leicestershire and has decided to join Warwickshire.

The 32-year-old all rounder ends brings an end to his 13 year career at Grace Road with Grace Road where he was a massively popular figure and was a key player in both Championship successes and Twenty20 Cup wins..

In his 13 years with the Foxes he he scored over 10,000 first class runs, including 16 centuries, and made over 8,000 one-day runs. Darren has gained the reputation of 'Mr Twenty20' with his outstanding performances in this competition in which he became the first player to reach 1,000 runs and who can forget his superb Man of the Match performance in the final this year versus Nottinghamshire.

Maddy told the official County site, “This has been the hardest decision of my life, but after many sleepless nights and long discussions with family and friends, I felt it was the right time to seek a fresh start in my cricket career. My heart will, however, always be at Leicestershire where I first started being coached at eight years of age.

“I am proud of my successes at Grace Road, but in being honest with myself, I decided that this was the time to challenge myself and seek to maximise my potential because I still feel there is a lot I can achieve in the game.”

He added: “I cannot speak highly enough of Tim Boon, who first coached me when I was 10 years old and worked very hard with me on my game last season, and of the Club who have always treated me well.”

Coach Tim Boon told the Leicester Mercury,  "At times he has been brilliant in the one-day game, particularly Twenty20, but he has also struggled to maintain his place in the Championship side. I am determined to establish a principle at Leicestershire that top-earning senior players must perform in all forms of the game."

While Boon's initial comments are true enough, there is a certain amount of contradiction. Jeremy Snape and Darren Robinson, have been omitted from the Championship and One-Day side respectively, so are these players not classed as 'top-earning senior players?

I, for one, totally understand Darren's decision to leave and good luck to him. Other experienced players under-performed in the Championship last season but seemed immune from the chop and with Maddy's excellent track record with the club he deserved more chances to rediscover his Championship form last season.

All the best Darren, you will never be forgotten and will always be a Leicestershire great.

Liddle signs for Sussex (23/10/06)

Chris Liddle, who recently turned down a new contract at Leicestershire has joined Sussex on a two-year deal.

The 22 year year left arm seamer's move to the County Champions comes as something as a surprise after playing the majority of his three years at Grace Road in the Second XI. He did make his breakthrough in the Championship side towards the end of last season but failed to make a significant impact and was surprisingly offered a new deal which he subsequently declined.

Liddle leaves County (12/10/06)

Left arm seamer Chris Liddle has decided to turn down the offer of a two year deal at Leicestershire and has now left the club.

The 22 year old from Middlesbrough, has been with the Foxes for 3 seasons and it took him until the latter end of 2006 before finally breaking into the Championship side taking 9 wickets in four matches at 40 a piece. Liddle's depature is no major blow to the County who have the likes of Nick Walker and Ryan Cummins ahead of him in the pecking order anyway.

Meanwhile, Tim Boon has been invited to head a special training camp ahead of the 2007 World Cup to be played in the West Indies. Boon will fly to South Africa for five weeks where he will work alongside other leading figures in the game at the camp where they will give specialist coaching to one player from each of the following countries, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Bermuda, Kenya and the Netherlands.

This can only be good for the Boon and the County, as hopefully he can bring back his experiences and advice from other coaches from other countries and cultures.

Maddy offered new deal (6/10/06)

Darren Maddy has been offered a new two year deal by Leicestershire, but they could face a fight for his signature.

Both Sussex and Warwickshire have expressed an interest in the 32 year old all rounder, who was the hero of the Twenty20 final back in August.

Maddy is reportedly keen to stay on but no doubt he will be seeking reassurances regarding his place in the Championship side after being out of favour for a long period in 2006. With the County unable to compete financially with both other counties, the club will be hoping Maddy's loyalty and love of the Foxes will play a major factor in his decision.

Ackerman wins Player of the Year award (1/10/06)

HD Ackerman has been named as the Leicestershire Foxes Supporters Site 'Player of the Year' for 2006 after having a sensational season. The South African Kolpak player hit an incredible 1804 Championship runs at an average of 82 which included a Leicestershire club record innings of 309 not out at Sophia Gardens versus Glamorgan and only Mark Ramprakash scored more first class runs this season. Having won the award in 2005, HD enjoyed an even more successful season this year after standing down as skipper at the beginning of the campaign to concentrate on his batting. His Twenty20 form was superb, as he was the second highest run scorer behind Justin Langer in the competition in 2006 with 409 runs, which included 5 half centuries.

Unfortunately, after having to return to South Africa early, citing personal reasons, HD missed the final Chmapionship match at home to Essex and missed out on the chance to make it to the magical 2,000 runs barrier. Ackerman also picked up four gongs at the annual club awards ceremony last month, including two player of the year prizes and no one is more deserving after a sensational season.

Paul Nixon ran Ackerman a very close second after what is probably the best season of his career. The 36 year old wicketkeeper hit 895 Championship runs at an average just under 60 and was also a key batsman in the victorious Twenty20 side. Behind the stumps he was as sharp as in his prime and claimed 80 victims in all competitions and would have been a worthy winner of the Player of the Year prize himself.

Congratulations HD and well done Nico.

LCCC v Essex - Championship (20-23/9/06)

Essex 1st Innings - 486 all out (Cook 132, Foster 103, Masters 3-58),    Leicestershire 1st Innings - 372-4 dec (Sadler 128 not out, Allenby 103 not out)

Essex 2nd Innings - 186-0 dec (Pettini 114 not out),    Leicestershire 2nd Innings - 301-5 (Allenby 68 not out, New 51)

Leicestershire won by 5 wickets

Day 1

Essex built up a solid score as England man Ali Cook made 132. David Masters was the County's main threat as he claimed a very economical 3-41 and James Foster was near to his century at close with 93 not out as Essex finished the day on 322-6.

Day 2

Essex's lower order provided frustration for Leicestershire's bowlers as Essex went on to make 486 all out. James Foster completed his century by making 103 and useful 40+ scores from Ryan ten Doeschate and James Middlesbrook kept the scoreboard ticking. But it was Aussie Andy Bichel who rapidly increased their total by scoring an unbeaten 75 which included 8 fours and 4 sixes. Claude Henderson claimed two wickets and took his first class wicket tally for the season to 49.

In reply, after a nervous start, Leicestershire finished the day on a promising 226-4. John Maunders (7) and Tom New and Darren Maddy who failed to score put the pressure on but fortunately Darren Robinson (80) steadied the ship and at close it was John Sadler with 71 and and Jim Allenby with 37 who both reamained unbeaten.

Day 3

With heavy rain ruining today's play, only 18 overs were possible as the match looked to be heading for a draw as the day closed with the County at 290-4. In those 18 overs though John Sadler and Jim Allenby both increased their scores and reamained unbeaten. Sadler made 89 not out and now comes close to scoring his first century for three years and Jim Allenby was 70 not out on his Chamapionship debut.

Day 4

The final day was almost like a Hollywood movie. Records were broken, many sixes were hit and the unlikely heroes emerged victorious at the end! Incredibly, Leicestershire won the match and who would of thought that a result would be possible!
Following on from the previous day, John Sadler and Allenby continued to dominate as they both reached their centuries. Sadler, made an unbeaten 128, his first ton for three years and Allenby remained 103 not out when the Foxes declared on 372-4, still 114 runs behind Essex's first innings total. Allenby became only the fifth Leicestershire player to score a century on his Championship debut and later on in the day he would add more runs in the second innings.
Then, a farce developed, as Essex, taking advantage of some classic declaration bowling from Paul Nixon and Darren Robinson, knocked off a ridiculous 186-0 declared from 9.4 overs! Mark Pettini made an incredible 114 from 29 balls and hit 11 sixes in what I believe might be the world record for the fastest century in first class cricket. Ali Cook made a slightly more 'sedate' 66 from 32 balls as Robinson's 4.4 overs went for 117 runs and surely the worst economy rate in world cricket!
So the match was set up for a result by both sides with the Foxes set 301 to win, although the pressure was definitely on Essex as had to win to ensure promotion to the first division. Leicestershire suffered the early loss of Darren Robinson for 7, but John Maunders (49) and Tom New (51) took the score past the 100 mark. As both were out in quick succession, John Sadler made a brisk 38, but during this innings the Yorkshireman passed 1,000 first class runs for the season for the first time in his career. When Darren Maddy was out for 39 to make it 199-5, Essex must have been confident but Paul Nixon and Jim Allenby had other ideas. Nixon's unbeaten near run a ball 38 was overshadowed though by Allenby's 68 not from just 49 balls. The Australian/Englishman followed on from his debut century in the first innings with a innings of maturity, class and power as he hit 9 fours and 2 sixes and both he and Nixon saw County to an unlikely and memorable victory with just 3.5 overs spare.

Never in a million years did it look like this match would end in a win for either side but both teams ensured that a result was manufactured and thankfully and magnificently it was Leicestershire who came out the winners. John Sdaler deservedly made his first century for three years and passed 1,000 in a season for the first time and Jim Allenby was simply sensational with an unbeaten century and a fifty on his debut. Surely this must now cement his place in the Championship team for 2007.

LCCC v Derbyshire - Pro 40 Division 2 (17/9/06)

Derbyshire - 222-7 (Henderson 2-33, Maunders 2-25),    Leicestershire - 223-6 (Maddy 74, New 42, Nixon 38 not out)

Leicestershire won by 4 wickets with 8 balls remaining

Leicestershire completed a victory over their local rivals Derbyshire in their final Pro40 match of the season with Darren Maddy once again the main man.

Batting first, Derbyshire made 222-7 from their 40 overs with Steve Stubbings top scoring with 43 and the other runs shared out equally amongst the other batsmen. Claude Henderson (2-33) and John Maunders (2-25) cuased the most damage with the ball with youngster Daniel Rowe inpressing with 1-26. Stuart Broad looked jaded and his performance was nowhere near his normal high standard as he went for 1-55 from 7 overs.

The Foxes made a great start in reply as Tom New and Darren Maddy shared in an opening stand of 101 before the young wicketkeeper fell for 42. Maddy continued to dominate and eventually fell for an entertaining 74 from 80 balls and then wickets began to fall as Jimmy Allenby made only 4, John Sadler fell for 32, Jeremy Snape for 8 and John Maunders made only 1. With the score now at 186-6, the match looked to be swinging in Derby's favour but the ever dependable Paul Nixon and Claude Henderson showed their experience to power Couty to victory with 8 balls remaining. Nixon made 38 from just 23 balls and hit 3 sixes and Henderson hit a brisk 15 from 9 balls as they steered the Foxes home.

This was a good finish to a disappointing Pro40 season and the County must perform more consistently in 2007 if they are to challenge for promotion. Over the course of this competition, we fielded pretty much the same XI that were successful in the 20/20 and that form must be transferred over to this form of cricket.

Broad returns to squad (17/9/06)

Stuart Broad returns to the Leicestershire squad as they entertain at Grace Road Derbyshire in their final Pro40 match of the season.

Broad, who was not selected for the Ashes tour but was included in the Academy squad, could form an exciting young opening new ball partnership with the in form Nick Walker as the County look to end the season on a high. John Maunders and Tom New will battle it out for the vacant batting spot after HD Ackerman's return to South Africa and seamer Daniel Rowe, highly rated by skipper Jeremy Snape, is also included in the squad. Darren Robinson is not included after some disappointing form.

Squad:

Tom New, Darren Maddy, Jimmy Allenby, Paul Nixon (wkt), John Sadler, Jeremy Snape (capt), John Maunders, Claude Henderson, Stuart Broad, David Masters, Nick Walker, Ryan Cummins, Daniel Rowe.

Ackerman returns to South Africa (12/9/06)

HD Ackerman will miss the remainder of the 2006 season after returning home to South Africa, citing 'family reasons'.

The 33-year-old former South African batsman will now not have the chance to add to his incredible 1,804 Championship runs this season and will miss out on breaking Nigel Briers' 16 year old record of 1,846 runs.

With a County Championship average of 82.00, HD has scored 50 or more in 18 of his last 25 Championship innings, with three hundreds coming in that time including his record breaking 309 not out at Sophia Gardens. Ackerman was also the Foxes top run scorer in 20/20 and will no doubt sweep the board with Player of the Year awards for both the club and this site.

HD will miss the Pro40 match at Derby on Sunday and the final Championship match next week against Essex.

Hopefully, Ackerman will be back for 2007 and his early departure cannot dent what has been a sensational season for him and one of the best seasons for an individual in Leicestershire colours in many, many years.

Whatever HD's reasons for returning home are, we wish him well and look forward to seeing him back in action again next season.

Worcestershire v LCCC - Championship (6-9/9/06)

Worcestershire 1st Innings - 331 all out (Maunders 4-15, Vincent 78),    Leicestershire 1st Innings - 259 all out (Ackerman 111 not out)

Worcestershire 2nd Innings - 378-8 dec (Vincent 141, Maddy 3-70),    Leicestershire 2nd Innings - 258 all out (Maunders 74, Ackerman 72)

Leicestershire lost by 192 runs

Day 1

Batting first, Worcestershire were bowled out for 331 after Leicester won the toss. New Zealand opener Lou Vincent cracked a rapid 78  and dominated a second-wicket stand of 99 with Vikram Solanki (72).

Foxes part time bowler John Maunders claimed career best figures of 4-15 from 9.2 overs.

Day 2

Leicestershire responded with a disappointing total of 259 but again HD Ackerman excelled and picked up his fourth century of the season, finishing unbeaten on 111. At close, Worcestershire were 55-1 in their second innings.

Day 3

Lou Vincent once again starred for the home side and followed up his breezy first innings half century with a more sedate 141 in the second. At 378-8, Worcestershire declared giving Leicestershire an massive target of 450. At close, the Foxes were 47 without loss and with a big day ahead of them.

Day 4

After a promising start, Leicestershire's mid and lower order provided feeble resistance to collapse to 258 all out and defeat. Darren Robinson made 47, and then John Maunders (74) and HD Ackerman (72) shared in second wicket stand of exactly 100. After John Sadler's 19, not one other Foxes batsman made double figures as their score went from 180-1 to 258 all out. Early on, their were grounds for optimism with Maunders and Ackerman giving the County a chance of victory but some poor batting enabled Worcestershire to ease to victory as former England bowler Kabir Ali returned 5-94.

After a long run without defeat in the County Championship, Leicestershire seemed to surrender in their second innings especially but the form of HD Ackerman cannot stopped as the South African has now passed 1,800 Championship runs for the season and is on course for the best tally by a Leicestershire player in nearly 20 years.

LCCC v Somerset - Championship (1-4/9/06)

Somerset 1st Innings - 192 all out (Walker 5-59, Liddle 3-42),    Leicestershire 2nd Innings - 360-5 dec (Maddy 86 not out, Ackerman 82, Henderson 62 not out, Sadler 58)

Somerset 2nd Innings - 148 all out (Masters 3-23, Henderson 3-25, Cummins 3-36)

Leicestershire won by 190 runs

Leicester continued their fine Championship form as they cruised to victory over Somerset at Grace Road. Initially batting was hard as the County could only manage 170 all out in their first innings with HD Ackerman top scoring with 53. In reply, and amongst many interruptions, Somerset faired little better with 190 all out as Nick Walker was once again in brilliant form and claimed career best figures of 5-59 and Chris Liddle returned 3-42. After rain halted proceedings agai, the Foxes rattled up 360-5 declared in their second innings with HD Ackerman, Darren Maddy, Claude Henderson and John Sadler all hitting 50 plus knocks and setting Somerset 339 for victory. The visitors never got close though, as a brilliant team effort led to Somerset being bowled out with plenty of time to spare on the final day for 148. David Masters, Henderson and Ryan Cummins all picked up 3 wickets a piece to end a very satisfying performance for the County.

The County have now not lost in the Championship since July and once again showed brillaint team work to see off a poor Somerset side. HD Ackerman has now passed 1500 championship runs in his prolific season and Claude Henderson has turned out to be a true all rounder this year.

LCCC V Somerset - Pro 40 (31/8/06)

Leicestershire - 173-8 (Ackerman 51),     Somerset - 137 all out (Walker 4-26, Snape 3-28)

Leicestershire won by 36 runs

Nick Walker produced a fantastic spell of bowling as Leicestershire comfortably beat Somerset in front of the SKY cameras at Grace Road. The 22 year old gave the Foxes the spark that they needed in Stuart Broad's absence as he picked up 4-26 and the Man of the Match award.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the County lost Darren Robinson in the first over without scoring and with the ball moving about Darren Maddy and HD Ackerman batted patiently in difficult conditions. Both shared in a crucial stand of 69 before Maddy hit an on drive straight into the hands of former Fox Charl Willoughby after making 32. Ackerman was next to go 23 runs later but during that time he made an excellent 51 which is a fine feat with the wicket having so much movement. Jimmy Allenby fell cheaply for 7 and then Jeremy Snape made a brisk 23 as the wickets tumbled. Paul Nxion batted patiently for his 16 but John Sadler failed to perform as he was stumped by Sturway off Durston after advancing half way down the wicket and missing th ball completely. Claude Henderson (14) chipped in and unbeaten efforts of 10 and 8 by David Masters and Nick Walker took the County to 173-8 at the end of the 40 overs. It didn't look enough but little did they know, it was a pretty decent score.

Enter Nick Walker who proceeded to rip through the Somerset batting line up, claiming the wickets of Wood, Suppiah, Parsons and Durston, all caught behind, with the former Derbyshire man claiming 4-26. Ryan Cummisn also bowled well and in fact got the ball rolling with the first wicket, clean bowling Neil Edwards with a beauty. David Masters also got amongst the wickets by removing Trego and Hildreth but a mini rally by Sam Spurway and Gareth Andrew but a few hearts in mouths as they shared in an eighth wicket stand of 57 but luckily Jeremy Snape was hand to remove them both. The match was over shortly after as Snape clean bowled Andy Caddick with the visitors totalling 137 all out from 36.3 overs, 36 runs short of their target.

After five successive defeats in Pro40, finally a win has come and after a difficult start the County won convincingly and the performance of Nick Walker is a major plus point.

Walker and Maunders in squad for SKY TV Pro40 match (31/8/06)

Nick Walker and John Maunders have both been included in the Leicestershire squad for tonight's SKY televised Pro40 match at Grace Road versus Somerset.

All-rounder Walker, makes a long awaited return after being ignored recently despite putting in some excellent performances since joing the County a couple of months ago. Maunders, despite a good first class season, has barely played in one day matches so far this season and may get a chance tonight.

Obviously with Stuart Broad on England duty and Adam Griffith having to return home to Australia due to injury, the Foxes pace attack is not the strongest but Walker could just be the man to give the County that much needed spark they are looking for.

Bizarrely, there is no place for the emerging Jimmy Allenby, who has been a regular fixture in one-day games, or Paul Harrison.

Squad:

Darren Robinson, Darren Maddy, HD Ackerman, Paul Nixon (wkt), John Sadler, Jeremy Snape (capt), John Maunders, Claude Henderson, Nick Walker, David Masters, Ryan Cummins, Chris Liddle.

Nixon awarded Benefit for 2007 (31/8/06)

Paul Nixon has been awarded a benefit for 2007. The Leicestershire star, who is 37 later this year, fully deserves this honour as he has been a fantastic servant during two spells with the County.

The Cumbrian born and bred wicketkeeper made his debut for Leicestershire in 1989 at the age of 18 against the Australian tourists and has gone on to become a tremendously popular figure at Grace Road. After having a couple of years at Kent, 'Nico' returned 'home' in 2003 and this season has probably been one of his best, as he tops the first class batting averages for the club and is neck and neck with HD Ackerman for this site's Player of the Year award. His tremendous enthusiasm for the game and his motivational attitude has rubbed off on supporters and I am sure all fans are delighted with the benefit award.

Well done Nico!

Meanwhile, Stuart Broad again impressed in his first One Day International at Cardiff. Broad scored 8 not out as England crumled to 202 all out and, opening the bowling, 1-14 from three overs until the rain came down and the game was abandoned as a no result. The 20 year old trapped Shoaib Malik lbw with a beauty and again looked totally at home on the international stage.

Broad shines on England debut (28/8/06)

Stuart Broad produced a magnificent spell of bowling on his England debut although the national side crashed to a heavy defeat to Pakistan in a 20/20 International fixture at Bristol.

In Broad's second over he took the wickets of Shoaib Malik and Younis Khan in successive balls and when former County favourite Shahid Afridi clubbed the next ball high into the sky, for just a few seconds it look like the young seamer would claim an unbelievable hat-trick. It wasn't to be, as the ball disected two fielders, but it was a fantastic over from the 20 year old an only a blitzing from Afridi in Broad's third over, slightly damgaed his figures as he finished with 2-35 from his 4 overs.

Batting first, England's score of 144-7 was just not good enough and Pakistan knocked the runs off with ease to win the match with 148-5 from 17.5 overs. Apart from Broad's eye catching debut the highlight of the day was Afridi's 10 ball 28, oh how the memories flooded back!

Scorecard

LCCC v Hampshire - Pro40 (27/8/06)

Hampshire - 239-5 (Carberry 74, Henderson 3-36),    Leicestershire - 194 all out (Sadler 68, Tremlett 4-35)

Hampshire won by 45 runs

Leicestershire slipped to their fifth successive Pro40 defeat at the hands of Hampshire at Grace Road. Foxes skipper Jeremy Snape won the toss and put the visistors in to bat and must have felt this was the wrong decision as Hants went on to make 239-5 from their 40 overs. Michael Carberry top scored with 74 as the Foxes inexperienced attack struggled and only Claude Henderson could hold his head high after claiming 3-36.

In reply, it was almost all over from the off as the County floundered at 96-6 but some respectability was gained by a cracking 47 ball 68 from John Sadler Jeremy Snape's 30 and David Masters with 27. The inform Paul Nixon and HD Ackerman both failed to score and the Foxes were all out, well short, for 194.

Without the benefit of any overseas players for the rest of the season why have their not been chances in the side for the impressive Paul Harrison and Nick Walker?

Broad collects top honour (26/8/06)

Stuart Broad must be pinching himself. After a superb season with Leicestershire and in the last few days gaining selction for the Engalnd One-Day squad, he has now been named 'Young Cricketer of the Year' by the Cricket Writers Club.

The 20 year old beat off competition from England's Ali Cook and Liam Plunkett and Worcestershire wicket keeper Stephen Davies to get the award with Ian Bell, Andrew Flintoff and Mark Ramprakash winning the award in past years.

Once again, many congratulations go to Stuart.

Broad called up for England One-Day squad (23/8/06)

Stuart Broad has been named in the Engalnd squad that will take part in the one-day series with Pakistan.

The 20 year old has been in excellent form for Leicestershire and fully deserves the chance to display and enhance his massive potential on the international stage. There is no doubt that Broad will make his debut at sometime during the series and after coming to the attention of the nation on 20/20 Finals Day he has the talent and dedication to be a massive success.

Congratulations Stuart and Good Luck!

Northants v LCCC - Championship (22-25/8/06)

Leicestershire 1st Innings 515-8 dec (Ackerman 216, Nixon 144 not out)

Northants 1st Innings - 353-4 dec (Henderson 3-110, Peters 104)

Leicestershire 2nd Innings - 175-6 dec (Ackerman 50),    Northants 2nd Innings - 259-6 (Afzaal 82, Broad 4-63)

Match Drawn (10 points each)

Day 1

HD Ackerman once again stole the show with a brilliant unbeaten 188 as the County closed on an impressive 383-4. The South African was given excellent back up by John Sadler (69) and Paul Nixon's 70 not out.

Day 2

It was Paul Nixon's day today as he hit a superb career best 144 not out after HD Ackeramn completed his second double hundred of the season to finish on 216. Unfortunately only 33 overs were possible due to the weather as the Foxes closed on a mammoth 515-8.

Day 3

After decalring without a further ball being balled, Leicestershire put Northants into bat and the vistitors had a fruitful day at the crease as they made 353-4 from nearly 93 overs before declaring early in an attempt to get a result out of the match. Stephen Peters made 104 and half centuries from David Sales, Bilal Shafayat and former County favourite Chris Rogers proved that this was a good run scoring wicket as the Foxes Claude Henderson claimed 3-110.

The Foxes faced 9 tricky overs at the end of the day and lost the wicket of John Maunders for a quick fire 20 but Darren Robinson (19 not out) and nightwatchman Stuart Broad (4 not out) were there at close.#

Day 4

After losing the early wickets of Robinson, Broad, Sadler and Darren Maddy, HD Ackerman once again excellent and scored exactly 50 to leave himself just 10 runs short of 1500 first class runs this season. Paul Nixon (22 not out) and Claude Henderson (23 not out) added some fireworks as the Foxes declared on 175-6 giving Northants an unlikely victory target of 338 from 58 overs.

Leicestershire made early inroads with Broad clean bowling Peters with the score at 41 and then 45 runs later Henderson removed Peters for 41. But once again Usman Afzaal and Bilal Shafayat gave Northants a chance of victory as the steered their side to 241-5. Afzaal made 82 and Shafayat blasted 67 from just 47 balls but Stuart Broad removed them both and as he also added the scalp of Ben Phillips to put the County back on top the rain again intervened and the umpires decided enough was enough a declared the match a draw with Northants on 259-6. Broad ended with figures of 4-63 and Henderson 2-90 with both adding their impressive wicket hauls so far this season.

Amjad returns home (19/8/06)

Young overseas player Mansoor Amjad has returned home to Pakistan after an injury to his spinning finger.

The 18 year old, who played a part in the 20/20 Cup semi final win over Essex, will not be replaced by another overseas player as Dinesh Mongia is not likely to return to the club.

Meanwhile, the County are giving a trial to 24 year old spinning all rounder Rob Ferley of Kent who has been deemed surplus to requirements at Canterbury.

LCCC v Worcestershire - Championship (16-19/8/06)

Worcestershire 1st Innings - 456-8 dec (Davies 140),    Leicestershire 1st Innings - 101-2 dec (Robinson 40 not out, Sadler 30 not out)

Worcestershire 2nd Innings - Forfeited,    Leicestershire 2nd Innings - 357-7 (Maddy 83, Sadler 81, Nixon 50)

Leicestershire won by 3 wickets

Day 1

Worcestershire piled on a first day score of 397-5 as the Leicestershire bowlers found it tough going. Young wicket-keeper batsman Steven Davies finished the day on 128 not out and shared a big stand with England all rounder Gareth Batty (92 not out). earlier in the day Stephen Moore just fell short of his century by making 97 as Claude Henderson was the oly real threat for County with his 2 wickets.

Day 2

The visitors built on their impressive first day and declared on 456-8 with Darren Maddy, Stuart Braod and Adam Griffith helping themselves to wickets. In reply, the Foxes got as far as 40-0 before a heavy thunderstorm had it's say and put an end to the day's play as John Maunders and Darren Robinson both remained unbeaten on 20.

Day 3

Only 10 overs were possible today with the rain ruining the chances of a result for either side. Zaheer Khan accounted for the wicket of John Maunders for 25 as Daren Robinson (27) and HD Ackerman (3) remained unbeaten at close.

Day 4

If anyone told me this moring that Leicestershire would win ths match then I would have had them commited to a mental institution but incredibly that is what happened! HD Ackerman was removed arly on without adding to his score but John Sadler provided some fireworks by hitting 30 not out from 21 balls and Darren Robinson gave him solid support with an unbeaten 40 as the Foxes declared at 101-2 in the hope of getting a result. Worcester followed suit and forfeited their entire 2nd innings thus setting the County a victory target of 356.

At 88-3 for three and the loss of Robinson, Maunders and Ackerman, things looked bleak but enter John Sadler and Darren Maddy who shared a 4th wicket stand of 240 and gave the County the foundations to go and a win the match. Maddy played his natural fluent game but will have been disappointed not to make his century upon returning to the Championship fold. His 83 came from 103 balls and included 10 fours and 2 sixes before he was trapped lbw by New Zealander Lou Vincent. Sadler played a more patient role and before being bowled by spinner Ray Price, made 81 from 153 balls. The in form Paul Nixon and Claude Henderson shared 86 for the 6th wicket and brought the County within touching distance of victory as the former made a flat 50 and the South African added 36 before Stuart Broad (9 not out) and Adam Griffith (1 not out) saw the County home not long after 6pm.

All credit must go to both sides for making a cracking final day's play and the County deserve the plaudits after keeping their heads to make the 4th ever highest 2nd Innings run chase in their history.

Hero Maddy back in Championship team (15/8/06)

Darren 'Mr 20/20' Maddy has finally been recalled to the Championship team for the match starting at Grace Raod tomorrow when Leicestershire entertain Worcestershire.

It is a long overdue recall for Darren, but after his stunning recent form in one-day cricket, how can he be denied a place in the side?

Leicester born spinner Jigar Naik is also included in the squad as overseas player Mansoor Amjad is nursing an injury to his spinning finger. John Maunders returns to the side after a highly productive week in the seconds as he scored a 200 and a 100 in one match!

Squad:

Darren Robinson, John Maunders, HD Ackerman, Darren Maddy, John Sadler, Paul Nixon (wkt), Jeremy Snape (capt), Claude Henderson, David Masters, Stuart Broad, Adam Griffith, Ryan Cummins, Jigar Naik.

LCCC v Worcestershire - Pro40 (14/08/06)

Leicestershire 200-6 (Ackerman 86, Allenby 43 not out)    Worcestershire 201-2 (Moore 105 not out)

Worcestershire won by 8 wickets with 51 balls remaining

Leicestershire suffered a bout of 20/20 'hangover' as they slumped to a massive defeat at Grace Road to Worcestershire. Even this defeat could not hinder the County's celebration party and barbeque at the end of play, in which Jeremy Snape once again held aloft the 20/20 Cup, giving the chance for the players to have a 'meet and greet' with the jubilant fans.

The visitors won the toss and made the County bat first and it was difficult from the off as the Foxes did not even make 60 runs by the time 20 overs had arrived. Darren Maddy, even though making 34, could not repeat Saturday's heroics but HD Ackerman continued his sensational season by scoring a near run a ball 86. Paul Nixon, Jeremy Snape and 'broken konked' John Sadler all fell cheaply but another 20/20 hero, Jimmy Allenby provided some late fireworks and enhanced his reputation with a 31 ball 43 not out including 2 big sixes as the County scraped to 200-6.

The County bowling attack could not cope with Worcestershire's power as the visitors rattled up their target of 201 in just over 33 overs with the loss of just 2 wickets. All of the seamers took punishment and it was only spinners Snape and Claude Henderson who could relatively slow the batters down. South African born Stephen Moore was undoubtedly the star of the show and scored a superb and unbeaten 105.

Regardless of the result, it was great for the County fans to welcome home their hero's and share the glory all over again!

20/20 Preview (11/8/06)

As featured in the Leicester Mercury Sporting Blue/Green

We’re back! Leicestershire continue their ever-present annual appearance at 20/20 finals day on Saturday and 1,600 County fans (or even more if you paid approx £100 on Ebay for a ticket) will be part of the ‘razzmatazz’ up the road at Trent Bridge hoping the Foxes can repeat 2004’s success.

County have been given the moniker of ’20/20 Kings’ by former England coach David Lloyd, who once fell asleep during a TV interview! He will surely be wide-awake at the weekend as the Foxes open the day with the first semi final versus Essex.

The ‘Essex Boys’ boast a ‘new’ found ‘batsmen’ in 36-year-old Darren Gough. The former England star now bats at number 3 in their 20/20 line up but his big hitting is a far cry from his graceful performance in the outrageously camp TV show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in which he walked away the overall winner. Whatever next, perhaps Paul Nixon with some Cumbrian crooning on ‘How to Solve a Problem Like Maria’?

As we all know, Leicestershire can brag some of the best 20/20 batters on the circuit, namely Darren Maddy, the ever-consistent HD Ackerman, Nixon, Jeremy Snape and the brute force of John Sadler. All are capable of turning the game in a single over and the County’s strength is that they bat right down the order. Additional St Johns Ambulance staff will have to be employed in the ground as when Maddy and Nixon execute their favoured reverse sweep, there will be no shortage of head and abdominal injuries to spectators. Claude Henderson could add himself to that list, as recent form suggests he could be the next Shahid Afridi, although he maybe a foot taller and does not claim to be five years younger than he really is!

In the field the Foxes have been sensational throughout the competition and David Masters continues his impersonation of Jonty Rhodes this season and who can forget ‘that’ catch last year at the Oval?

The new ball pair, Stuart ‘stop calling me Chris’ Broad and Adam Griffith both have a penchant for the shortest form of the game and if you stand them on top of one another they will measure 32 feet and 7 inches.

After victory is secured over Essex and we progress to the final (I’m ever the optimist), we can watch the outcome of Notts v Surrey and then relax and watch the Sugababes in action. The girls should provide plenty of entertainment despite having a name that sounds like a bag of sweets.

Personally, I will be viewing all proceedings from the comfort of the aptly named ‘Fox Stand’ which has a curious no drinking and no smoking policy – is this stand run by a committee of strict parents?

I think the 20/20 has been great for cricket and especially good for Leicestershire as you cannot beat a full house at Grace Road but some sceptics describe the competition as a lottery. Does that mean we can have a bonus ball at the end when we need 4 runs for victory?

Kent v LCCC - Pro 40 (9/8/06)

Kent - 198-7 (Stevens 74, Masters 2-25)    Leicestershire 157 all out (Nixon 50, Dexter 3-17)

Kent won by 41 runs

Leicestershire warmed up for the 20/20 finals day with a disappointing defeat at Canterbury in front of the live Sky TV cameras.

Things looked rosy when the Foxes restricted the Spitfires to 198-7 as former Fox Darren Stevens was the only Kent man to score heavily with 74. All bowlers claimed relatively economical figures but David Masters, playing against his former club, was the most impressive as he picked up 2-25 from 7 overs. Young Mansoor Amjad, while less ecomomical, impressed with his spin and claimed his first wicket for the County.

In reply, the Foxes stuttered to 70-5 and Paul Nixon's excellent 50 was the only real highlight of the innings as Leicestershire folded to 157 all out. There was time though for Stuart Broad and Adam Griffith to have some 'fun' as they shared a last wicket stand of 29 off very few balls.

Surrey v LCCC - Pro 40 - (6/8/06)

Surrey - 275-7 (Butcher 88 not out, Benning 70, Henderson 3-39)    Leicestershire - 242 all out (Maddy 152)

Surrey won by 33 runs

Leicestershire suffered defeat in a high scoring game at the Oval but Darren Maddy produced a brilliant performance in the County's run chase. Maddy scored an incredible 152 from 110 balls, hitting 18 fours and 5 sixes but it wasn't enough to give the Foxes victory.

Batting first, Surrey mounted a massive total of 275-7 in which Mark Butcher (88 not out) and James Benning (70) dominated and only Claude Henderson emerged from the innings with any credit as he took 3-39. David Masters and Stuart Broad were both rested, which gave the opportunity to youngsters Ryan Cummins and Nick Walker to stake a claim but both were expensive as was Adam Griffith.

With Maddy hitting more than half of Leicestershire's reply total, the other batsmen (apart from Darren Robinson's 32) failed to ignite.

Leicestershire won by 4 wickets

Leicestershire warmed up for 20/20 finals day with a sensational win over Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College. Set a victory target of 240 from 45 oversthe County powered their way to victory thanks to Claude Henderson's incredible 16 ball 42 not out in which he cracked 6 sixes and Paul Nixon's brilliant unbeaten 68 from 52 balls.

Earlier in the match, the Foxes restricted the home team to 282 on a good batting track and it was Henderson who shone with ball by taking 5-76 and he was backed up by the excellent Stuart Broad who took 4-47. The County responded in spectacular fashion as John Maunders made a career best 180, his first century of the season, and Paul Nixon also made his first ton this year with 103. HD Ackerman continued his good form with 62 and Henderson finished unbeaten on 41 as the Foxes racked up a total of 482.

Gloucestershire's second innings showed much improvement on their first as Hamish Marshall (168) and Alex Gidman (120) steered the home team to 439-7 declared and Leicestershire's victory target was set at an ominous looking 240 from 45 overs. Stuart Braod continued his sparkling form to take 5-88 and to finish with career best match figures of 9-135.

The County did not look like a team who were heading for victory as they lost the early wickets of Darren Robinson and John Maunders but HD Ackerman made 46 before John Sadler fell for 20. Mansoor Amjad, making his County debut, scored a swift 25 before being trapped lbw by Martin Ball and Jeremy Snape made just 7 before the Nixon and Henderson show started as they accelerated the run rate and it was fitting that the South African should win the match with a big six in what was one of Leicestershire's most remarkable victory's in many years.

Leicestershire 225-8 (Robinson 44, Masters 39, Ackerman 38, Harrison 37)    Gloucestershire 227-8 (Harvey 39)

Gloucestershire won by 2 wickets with 13 balls remaining

Leicestershire slipped to a disappointing defeat as a late rally by tail enders Ian Fisher and Jon Lewis gave the home side victory with 13 balls to spare.

Darren Robinson with 44, HD Ackerman, who made 38 and Paul Harrison (37) all played their part in setting the foundations but it looked like the County would struggle to make 200. Enter David Masters and Claude Henderson, who smashed the County to 225-8. Masters carcked a one day career best of 39 from 23 balls including 3 sixes and Henderson lamped an unbeaten 29 from 16 balls, also hitting 3 sixes, giving the Foxes a good total.

Gloucestershire started briskly and Ian Harvey and Alex Gidman gave some harsh treatment to Stuart Broad and Adam Griffith but the wickets tumbled as Griffith claimed three and Gloucestershire were struggling at 120-5. Masters (2-41), Henderson and Snape kept the home team pegged back but Fisher and Lewis dealt some harsh treatment once again to Broad and Griffith and they claimed victory with 13 balls to spare.

County snap up Mansoor Amjad (31/7/06)

Leicestershire have completed the signing of exciting young Pakistan A all rounder Mansoor Amjad to replace Dinesh Mongia.

18 year old Amjad, is a highly rated leg spinner and very useful batsman and was originally due to play for the County seconds for the remainder of the summer but Tim Boon sees him fit to fill the second overseas place vacated by Mongia, who was called up to India's one-day squad. Amjad came to prominence on England's winter tour of Pakistan as claimed a five wicket haul against them in a tour game and Tim Boon hopes he will provide a cutting edge to the Foxes spin attack.

Amjad will watch his new team mates in action in the Pro40 match versus Gloucestershire before making his Championship debut at Cheltenham College the following day and it remains to be seen whether he will play a part in 20/20 finals day at Trent Bridge.

Leicestershire 2nd Innings - 271-5 dec (Maddy 92, New 85)

With Leicestershire fielding basically an entire reserve side, they made a good start to the first innings with New's half ton and Jimmy Allenby's 46 but the County collapsed to 205 all out. West Indies A replied with a total of 349, with Phil Simmons' nephew Lendl Simmons making exactly 100 and Ryan Cummins impressed with career best figures of 4-46.

Kent - 153-5 (van Jaarsveld 75, Broad 3-13), Leicestershire 156-1 (Maddy 79 not out, Ackerman 50)

Leicestershire won by 9 wickets

Leicestershire stormed through to finals day for the fourth year in succession and recorded one of their finest and easiest 20/20 victories to date.

Kent bucked the trend and elected to bat after winning the toss and were made to rue their decision as Stuart Broad ran riot with figures of 3-13 from his four overs. The 20 year old bowled with pace and quality and on this showing an England senior call cannot be far away. Martin van Jaarsveld helped Kent recover from 31-4 to a respectable par score of 153-5 with a 46 ball 75. David Masters, who was so superb in the field he could have been mistaken for Jonty Rhodes, claimed a sensational catch to remove fromer Fox Darren Stevens and Claude Henderson also made a brilliant juggling catch to remove Neil Dexter.

The County showed no nerves whatsoever, as HD Ackerman and Darren Maddy shared in a fantastic opening stand of 105. Ackerman made exactly 50 from 37 balls, continuing his sensational form but it was Maddy who made a welcome return to form and stole the show with an unbeaten 79 from 59 balls. With help from Paul Nixon (17 not out) the County reached their target with 2 overs to spare to send the sell out Grace Road crowd into a frenzy.

Overall, the County's bowling was excellent and they were fantastic in the field and their batting was full of quality, arrogance and innovation as Maddy in particular took a liking to the un-orthodox reverse sweep. Trent Bridge here we come!

Leicestershire 2nd Innings - 228-3 dec (Robinson 90, Ackerman 62), Glamorgan 2nd Innings - 154-7 (Griffith 3-34)

Match Drawn

This match will be remembered for one person and one feat and that is HD Ackerman's 309 not out, the highest ever score by a Leicestershire player in first class cricket. The South African played undoubtedly the finest innings of his career which consisted of 449 balls, 39 fours and 1 six. HD made more than half of the Foxes first innings total of 560 as once the first day was over the champagne was cracked opn for the team to unite and celebrate his remarkable score. Ackerman's innings almost overshadowed the fact the County were painfully close to winning this match and required just three more wickets for victory when the game was brought to a close.

On a glorious batting track at Sophia Gardens, Glamorgan couldn't match Leicestershire's 560 but didn't disappoint as they made a first innings total of 449 thanks to centuries from Brett McCullum and Michael Powell. The County made 228-3 in their second innings before declaring and setting the home side a traget of 340 for victory, as Ackerman added 62 to his earlier heroics and Darren Robinson made 90.

Chasing their target, Glamorgan found themselves at 81-5 and staring defeat in the face but Richard Grant and Alex Wharf did enough to fend of the Foxes and made it to 154-7 when the curtain came down on proceedings. Adam Griffith took 3-34 and even though the County were buzzing from Ackerman's knock, they would have been very disappointed not to have finished off the job and claimed victory.

Batting first, the Foxes made a record 20/20 score at the Riverside with HD Ackerman continuing his superb form by making 87 from 57 balls and Jeremy Snape was his usual destructive self as he smashed 41 from 21 balls.

Adam Griffith, who is now joint leading 20/20 leading leading taker in the country thsi season with 16 wickets, was once again top bowler and took 3-17 and Stuart Broad enjoyed his return to domestic cricket with excellent figures of 2-12. Leicestershire 155-8 (Nixon 52, Ackerman 45), Yorkshire 134 all out (Griffith 3-20)

Leicestershire won by 21 runs

The Foxes claimed their third successive 20/20 win and went to the top of the table as they now look certain to qualify for the quarter final stage. Paul Nixon top scored with a 39 ball 52 (including 3 sixes) and HD Ackerman was once again amogst the runs with 45 as Leicestershire made 155-8.

Yorkshire were in trouble from the off as Adam Griffith continued his excellent form by claiming 3-20 and Darren Maddy (2-10) and David Masters (2-26) backed him up well. Only Michael Lumb with 60 offered any genuine resistance as the home team were all out for 134 and the stand out moments in the innings were the sensational catch from Ackerman to remove Anthony McGrath from the bowling of Maddy and the superb caught by Maddy to claim the wicket of danger man Darren Lehmann.

Leicestershire 161-6 (Ackerman 53), Derbyshire 143-6 (Griffith 2-27, Stubbings 57)

Leicestershire won by 18 runs

Leicestershire responded to their defeat to Notts with another great winning team performance. HD Ackerman, restored to last season's opening slot, top scored with 53 and with some big hitting from Paul Nixon (25 not out) and Jeremy Snape (21 not out) the County posted a decent total of 161-6.

Derbyshire found it hard to keep up with the run rate and fell 18 runs short in their chase as the Foxes bowlers shared the wickets. Adam Griffith was once again the top man, taking 2-27 and former Derbyshire all rounder Nick Walker, who only signed for the Foxes last week after a trial, impressed by taking 1-14 from 3 overs.

Notts v LCCC - 20/20 Cup North Group (4/6/06)

Leicestershire 136-8 (Snape 38, Sadler 33), Nottinghamshire 137-5 (Griffith 2-12, Hussey 44 not out, Ealham 31 not out)

Nottinghamshire won by 5 wickets

This match was one to forget for David Masters. The Foxes seamer was hit for 30 by Mark Ealham in one over that included 4 sixes and it was the major factor in Nottinghamshire's victory.

Batting first the County made a not too impressive 136-8 from 20 overs but it could have been worse as an early order collapse left them in a mess at 63-5 but enter Jeremy Snape and John Sadler. The pair rescued the Foxes from their sticky situation and shared 66 for the sixth wicket, with Snape making 38 and Sadler 33.

Leicestershire had the upper hand for most of the Notts innings as even at 105-5, the home side still had plenty to do. Step forward Mark Ealham, who in the 18th over, with Notts requiring 31 for victory, smashed Masters to all corners of the ground for 30 and effectively winning the match in one over.

LCCC v Pakistan - Tour Match (1-3/7/06)

Leicestershire 1st Innings 315-9 dec (Mongia 129 not out, Sadler 92), Pakistan 1st Innings 304-5 dec (Walker 3-47)

Leicestershire 2nd Innings 191 all out (New 67, Sadler 51), Pakistan 2nd Innings 207-2 (Shoaib Malik 110 not out, Liddle 2-27)

Pakistan won by 8 wickets

An under strength Leicestershire gave Pakistan a good match as they opened their tour of England. The County made an impressive 315-9 in the first innings thanks to outstanding batting performances from Dinesh Mongia (129 not out) and John Sadler (92) and in reply the tourists fell just short of the Foxes total by declaring at 304-5 as debutant Nick Walker claimed impressive figures of 3-47.

The County's second innings was not as impressive as the first as they slipped to 191 all out but Tom New's 67 and John Sadler, who made his second half century of the match, with 51, could both hold their haeads high. Pakistan then proceeded to show their class as they knocked off the required 207 for victory in just over 40 overs with Shoaib Mailk top scoring with a superb 110 not out. Chris Liddle was the only bowler to emerge from the innings with any credit as he picked up 2-27 from 10 overs.

Youngsters in for Pakistan tour match (1/7/06)

Matt Boyce is set to make his first class debut as Leicestershire face Pakistan in a 3 day match as they start their tour of England.

21 year old Boyce, a left handed opening batsman, has been in impressive form for the seconds since his return to Grace Road from University. Left arm seamer Chris Liddle could also be in line for a rare start and trialist and former Derbyshire all rounder Nick Walker may get a run out as David Masters, Stuart Broad and Adam Griffith look set to be rested.

Derbyshire v LCCC - 20/20 Cup North Group (30/6/06)

Leicestershire 204-6 (Maddy 50, Nixon 42, Snape 33*, Sadler 21), Derbyshire 118 all out (Griffith 3-14, Masters 3-18)

Leicestershire won by 86 runs

Leicestershire responded to defeat against Lancashire in spectacular fashion, as batting first, they made a huge 204-6 from their 20 overs. Darren Maddy top scored with a 34 ball 50 which included 4 sixes and Paul Nixon with 42 , Jeremy Snape (14 ball 33 not out) and John Sadler made a 7 ball 21 as the Foxes hit a massive 10 sixes in the innings.

Derbyshire failed to get close in their reply as they were bowled out for 118 as Adam Griffith (3-14) and David Masters (3-18) ripped them to shreds and only Marcus North could make any sort of contribution for the home side with 45.

LCCC v Lancashire - 20/20 Cup North Group (29/6/06)

Leicestershire 160-6 (Robinson 41, Sadler 24), Lancashire 164-5 (Law 58, Masters 2-26)

Lancashire won by 5 wickets from the last ball.

Leicestershire disappointed in front of the Sky TV cameras and they should have had this game sewn up but a late onslaught of batting by Steven Croft sent Lancashire home with victory.

Having posted 160-6 from their 20 overs with Darren Robinson top scoring with 41, the Foxes were reasonably confident of restricting the visitors but Stuart Law (58) and Nathan Astle (38) made early inroads and despite a mid order stutter where the Foxes had the upper hand, Croft made 28 from 11 balls including 2 big sixes and one from the last ball to win the match.

Leicestershire 137-6 (Snape 47 not out, Sadler 25), Nottinghamshire 123-8 (Clough 40 not out, Masters 2-18, Broad 2-19, Griffith 2-22)

Leicestershire won by 14 runs

Skipper Jeremy Snape starred as Leicestershire cruised to victory over local rivals Notts in their opening 20/20 fixture of the season. 'Snapper' made an unbeaten 47 as the Foxes were put into bat first and made a total of 137-6 from their 20 overs. Top order batsmen Darren Robinson, Daren Maddy, Dinesh Mongia and HD Ackerman all fell cheaply as the County made a poor start but Snape's typically fluent knock and John Sadler's big hitting 25 got the Foxes back into the groove, although at the time the total seemed below par.

There was no need to worry though, as Leicestershire's seamers took control from the off as Nottinghamshire's reply stuttered from the off. Only David Hussey (32) and Gareth Clough (40 not out) made significant contributions as Stuart Broad, David Masters and Adam Griffith all took two wickets each. Captain Snape also sensationally ran out potential danger man Mark Ealham as the County got off to a great start to this years competition and will take great confidence into Thursday's match with Lancashire.

20/20 Preview (27/6/06)

Leicestershire aim to continue their 100% record of making it through to finals day of the 20/20 trophy. In 2004, the Foxes won the Trophy in a brilliant day at Edgbaston and in 2003 and 2005 they made it to the semi finals which of course are played on the same day as the final. It can be no coincidence that the County have had so much success in this competition so far and they will be hoping to for a repeat of their performances over the last 3 years in this years 20/20.

The Foxes entertain local rivals Nottinghamshire today (Tuesday) and will be hoping for a bumper crowd for the opening fixture. The key man for Leicestershire has to be Darren Maddy, who, although out of sorts so far this season, found his form again on Sunday with a sensational 167 not out in the C&G versus Scotland on Sunday. Maddy is reknowned for being one of the best 20/20 batsmen in the country and will be hoping to further enhance his reputation from tonight. HD Ackerman found success last season and shared with Maddy in many great opening stands last season that were key to County's success. Of course we all know that Jeremy Snape and Paul Nixon have found the 20/20 to their liking as it suits both of their games but Dinesh Mongia will be hoping for a better return with the bat after only ever being effective with the ball last year. David Masters should be the key bowler along with Aussie Adam Griffith who has proved he could provide some fireworks with the bat. Add to this the emerging talents of all rounder Jimmy Allenby and the impressive seamer Ryan Cummins, only time will tell whether the County can turn their disappointing season around and continue their reputation as 20/20 kings.

Squad for tonight's match:

Darren Robinson, Darren Maddy, Dinesh Mongia, HD Ackerman, Paul Nixon (wkt), Jeremy Snape (capt), John Sadler, Jimmy Allenby, Claude Henderson, David Masters, Stuart Broad, Adam Griffith, Ryan Cummins.

Scotland v LCCC - C&G Trophy North Group (25/6/06)

Leicestershire 314-3 (Maddy 167 not out), Scotland 261 all out (Hamilton 131, Maddy 3-28)

Leicestershire won by 53 runs

Darren Maddy produced a sensational all round performance as Leicestershire rounded off their C&G Trophy campaign in style with their third successive victory.

Brilliant Maddy made a one-day career best 167 not out from just 145 balls and hit 15 fours and 7 sixes as the County racked up 314 in 50 overs. He was supported by Darren Robinson (40), HD Ackerman (43) and John Sadler's 41 which came from just 24 balls as the Foxes were rampant.

Even though Adam Griffith claimed the wicket of Corey Richards without a run on the board, it was plain to see that it was a dream batting track as Scotland posted a brave and impressive 261 all out. Former England man Gavin Hamilton almost matched Maddy's heroics as he made a superb 131 from 128 balls and Neil McAllum also weighed in with 53. Stuart Broad claimed one wicket but it came at great expense as the youngster's 10 overs went at nearly six a piece, returning skipper Jeremy Snape claimed 3-52 from 8 expensive overs but Ryan Cummins once again impressed with figures of 2-24. But it was always going to be Maddy's day as, not content with his batting 'magic show', he excelled with the ball and finished with 3-28.

LCCC v Gloucestershire - Championship (20-23/6/06)

Aussie fast bowler Adam Griffith makes his debut for Leicestershire and joins the County for the rest of the season as a replacement for Pakistan star Mohammad Asif. Tom New retains his place in the team but there is still no sign of Darren Maddy who has had to make do with appearing in just one-day games over the last few weeks.

Day 1

Leicestershire 332-9 (Sadler 82, Ackerman 58, New 52)

Leicestershire put in an improved batting performance as John Sadler, HD Ackerman and Tom New all made half centuries although Sadler will be disappointed not to have gone on to make his first century in three years after falling for 82. A spirited rearguard action also ensured that the County remained with a wicket in tact at the end of play as Claude Henderson with 28 not out and debutant Adam Griffith, who made a swashbuckling unbeaten 14 from 7 balls including a four from his first ball.

Day 2

Leicestershire 371 (Henderson 40, Griffith 41 not out), Gloucestershire 282-9 dec (Broad 5-83), Leicestershire 2nd Innings 17-1

A last wicket stand of 58 from Claude Henderson and Adam Griffith took the Foxes within touching distance of the 400 mark. Henderson added a further 12 patient runs to his overnight score and Adam Griffith proved he could be a useful big hitter by making a career best 41 not out from just 30 balls.

Despite a promising reply, Gloucestershire chose to end the day in bizarre circumstances. Having reached 282-9, they decided to declare although they were 89 runs behind the Foxes total. Apparently, New Zealander Hamish Marshall was injured, so instead of declaring him 'absent hurt' they decided to declare altogether, thus robbing Leicestershire of a vital bowling points. During this innings Stuart Braod picked up career best figures of 5-83 and Adam Griffith claimed his first wicket for the club.

With 12 overs remaining after Gloucestershire's unsporting decision, the County lumbered to 17-1 with the loss of Darren Robinson for 7.

Day 3

Leicestershire 2nd Innings 233 (Mongia 62, Ackerman 59), Gloucestershire 2nd Innings 159-2

After a fine partnership of 106 between HD Ackerman and Dinesh Mongia, the County's rearguard couldn't hold firm on this occasion. The day started badly as John Maunders was out bvefore adding to his score and nightwatchman Claude Henderson followed shortly after. Tom New looked promising again before being clean bowled by Alex Gidman for 25 but it was the partnership between Ackerman and Mongia that put the Foxes in the driving seat. Ackerman with 59, made his second half century of the match and Mongia (62), took Leicestershire from 88-4 to 194-4 before both were out in quick succession. With this pair at the crease, a victory target of over 400 looked sure to be set but unlucky John Sadler received no support as he ran out of partners on his way to 24 not out, leaving Gloucester with a target of 323.

After a fast paced start from Craig Spearman and Kadeer Ali, David Masters claimed two quick wickets but it wasn't enough as the visitors closed at 159-2 and just under half way to their victory target. The bowling was below par as both Adam Griffith and Stuart Broad were expensive.

Day 4

Gloucestershire 2nd Innings 323-3, Leicestershire lost by 7 wickets

Inevitably, Gloucestershire claimed victory but with the ease they did it brought major disappointment to County fans. With the loss of just one more wicket (one again to David Masters) the vistors reached their target of 323, thanks to Alex Gidman's unbeaten 115 and Ian Harvey's 72 not out.

Once again, Leicestershire failed to capitalise on a good start and fans will be hoping the looming 20/20 tournament brings with it some positive performances and results.

LCCC v Yorkshire - C&G Trophy Northern Group (16/6/06)

Yorkshire 185-7 (Gale 63, Masters 2-22), Leicestershire 189-6 (New 51, Nixon 46 not out)

Leicestershire won by 4 wickets

Tom New and Paul Nixon guided the Foxes to their second successive C&G victory over a young Yorkshire side at Grace Road with 8 overs to spare.

New made 51 and Nixon, continuing his brilliant form, made an unbeaten run a ball 46. Earlier the Leicestershire attack had restricted the visitors to 185-7 from their 50 overs with David Masters the top man once again as he took 2-22 from his 10 overs and if it wasn't for some wayward bowling by Alamgir Sheriyar the score would have been a lot less as he bowled 9 wides.

Regardless of the inexperience of Yorkshire's team, a win is a win and it was a comfortable win at that and the County will hope to take their recent good one day form and transfer it to Championship cricket.

Surrey v LCCC - Championship (7-10/6/06)

Mohammad Asif plays his final game for Leicestershire before joining up with the Pakistan squad. The 23 year old will be replaced by Aussie fast bowler Adam Griffith for the rest of the season who has been playing league crciket in Lancashire for St Annes.

Team:

Darren Robinson (capt), John Maunders, Tom New, HD Ackerman, Dinesh Mongia, John Sadler, Paul Nixon (wkt), Claude Henderson, David Masters, Stuart Broad, Mohammad Asif.

Day 1

Leicestershire 251 all out (Ackerman 58, Henderson 46 not out), Surrey 64-1

Having won the toss on electing to bat on a dream batting track, Leicestershire posted a disappointing total of 251 all out. Only HD Ackerman with 58 and Claude Henderson (46 not out) provided any major runs.

Day 2

Surrey 416-4 (Brown 131 not out)

Surrey look set to be on their way to a large total as the Foxes attck struggled to break them down and matters were not helped due to an injury to Mohammad Asif. Mark Butcher and Ali Brown both made centuries with latter finishing the day unbeaten on 131.

Day 3

Surrey 668-7 dec (Brown 215, Clarke 165), Leicestershire 2nd Innings 179-6 (Robinson 85 not out)

A massive total of 668-7 led to Surrey's declaration with Ali Brown making a double ton and Rikki Clarke making a career best 165. Despite figures of 3-235, Claude Henderson was the County's most effective bowler as Surrey showed the Foxes how it should be done on a glorious batting wicket.

Just when we thought things couldn't get worse the County finished the day on a poor 179-6 and heading for one of their biggest defeats in memory. Only Darren Robinson displayed any composure as he reamined unbeaten at close on 85. With no chance of rain and the County having to bat the final day with just 4 wickets remaining, then anothing other than a defeat would be a miracle.

Day 4

Leicestershire 259 all out (Robinson 106) , Surrey won by an innings and 158 runs

The County inevitabley fell to a heavy defeat despite Darren Robinson's century. Claude Henderson made a battling 34 but it was not enough for the poor Foxes.

Northants 203-8 (Masters 3-21), Leicestershire 207-4 (Robinson 85, New 68)

Leicestershire won by 6 wickets

An opening stand of 158 between Tom New and the returning Darren Robinson was the key factor in Leicestershire's defeat of Northants at Oakham. Having restricted the visitors to 203-8 mainly thanks to David Masters' 3-21, the County coasted to victory with two and a half overs to spare with New (68) and Robinson (85) dominating. Despite a few minor hiccups, HD Ackerman powered the Foxes to victory with a 23 ball 24 and ensured that Northants remained winless and pointless in this competition so far this season.

Robinson set to return for C&G (3/6/06)

Darren Robinson is set to return to the Leicestershire side for Sunday's C&G clash with Northants at Oakham after spending a month on the sidelines with an injured shin.

Darren Maddy also returns to the side after being left out for the corresponding championship match but Mohammad Asif and Stuart Broad will be rested. Jimmy Allenby, Stuart Cummins, Alamgir Sheriyar and left arm seamer Chris Liddle all come into the reckoning as the County look to improve their poor one day form. Northants though have been in poorer form, as they have lost all six of their C&G matches so far this season but the Foxes must still watch out for dangerman Lance Klusener.

Squad:

Darren Robinson, Darren Maddy, John Maunders, HD Ackerman, Dinesh Mongia, John Sadler, Paul Nixon, Jimmy Allenby, Claude Henderson, David Masters, Ryan Cummins, Chris Liddle, Alamgir Sheriyar.

LCCC v Northants - Championship (31/5-3/6/06)

Day 1

Northants 331 all out (Klusener 122, Asif 3-67), Leicestershire 19-2 (Nicholson 2-7)

When you have Northants at 91-5 you would expect to bowl them out for a paltry total but when they achieve a score of 331 all out it makes you wonder, what on earth happened? Well this was exactly the situation that presented itself to Leicestershire as they wasted a great opportunity at Oakham School.

Mohammad Asif and Stuart Broad shared 5 wickets as they ripped through the visitors top order but thanks to David Sales, Ben Phillips and a century from Lance Klusener, Northants prospered. David Masters was unusually expensive but still managed to claim 2 wickets and Steven Clark, although picking up a wicket, went for 40 runs from six overs.

Having to face a tricky 12 overs before the end of the day, the County couldn't cope. Darren Maddy's replacement Tom New made just six and Steven Clark failed to score as they both fell to the Australian and former Foxes target Matt Nicholson and closed on a disappointing day at 19-2.

Day 2

Leicestershire 254-8 (Maunders 78, Ackerman 92)

Despite a good weather forecast, today's proceedings were affected by rain as only 76 overs were possible. The County recovered from their poor start thanks to the efforts of John Maunders and HD Ackerman. Maunders made 78 and Ackerman 92 and both will be disappointed not to have helped themselves to centuries and it was Lance Klusener who displayed his world class talent by claiming both their wickets and finishing the day with 5 wickets.

Day 3

Leicestershire 294 all out (Nixon 40 not out, Klusener 6-69), Northants 2nd Innings 288-7

Leicesteshire added 40 for the remaining two wickets with Paul Nixon once again continuing his remarkable form by making an unbeaten 40 and  'Nico' now has a first class average of more than 100 this season. Mohammad Asif provided some fireworks - initially with the bat as he made 15 from just 9 balls including 3 successive boundaries off Jason Brown.

Batting for the second time, Northants made a solid start despite the hiccup of losing Chris Rogers for 7, as he became one of Asif's 4 victims of the day. Steven Peters, Bilal Shafayat and Usman Afzaal all made half centuries but along with Asif's 4 wicket haul, spinner Claude Henderson claimed 3 wickets to leave Northants at 288-7 and to set up an intriguing final day.

Day 4

Northants 2nd Innings 334-9 (Asif 5-132, Henderson 4-75), Leicestershire 2nd Innings 244-2 (Maunders 80, Ackerman 55 not out, Mongia 54 not out) Match Drawn - Leicestershire 9 points, Northants 10 points

After a an early morning flurry from Aussie Matt Nicholson the County were set a mammoth 372 to win from approx 80 overs and not surprisingly decided to 'shut up shop' and bat out for the draw.

Tom New will be disappointed not have picked up a half century as he ground out 47 from 123 balls before becoming Lance Kluseners 7th scalp of the match. The man who will be most disappointed is John Maunders as he will be kicking himself as he once again came withing touching distance of his first century of the season but was bowled out by Nicholson for 80. HD Ackerman continued his excellent form with another half ton - this time unbeaten on 55 and Dinesh Mongia kept up his healthy average with 54 not out.

Maddy left out at Oakham (31/5/06)

Out of form Darren Maddy has been left out of the Leicestershire side for the championship match versus Northamptonshire starting today at Oakham.

The 32 year old, in his benefit year, has been replaced by Tom New who again gets the chance to impress after an outstanding year for the second team last season. All rounder Steven Clark retains his place in the side after impressing at Taunton and Mohammad Asif should be with the County for at least another week and returns to the side after missing Monday's match at Durham. It will be a special event for Stuart Broad as he was educated at Oakham School and he will be keen to make a big impression at his 'home' ground.

Team:

John Maunders, Tom New, HD Ackerman, Dinesh Mongia (capt), John Sadler, Paul Nixon (wkt), Steven Clark, Claude Henderson, David Masters, Stuart Broad, Mohammad Asif.

Durham v LCCC - C&G Trophy North Group (29/5/06)

Leicestershire 151-6 from 39 overs (Nixon 34 not out), Durham 164-7 from 36.4 overs (Cummins 2-14)

Durham won by 3 wickets (Duckworth/Lewis method)

Leicestershire crashed to another C&G Trophy defeat at the hands of Durham at Chester-le-Street. Durham's Phil Mustard and Callum Thorp made sure the home side sailed to their Duckworth/Lewis target with 14 balls to spare.

Put into bat first, the County made a painfully slow in amongst breaks for rain and the out of sorts Darren Maddy fell cheaply for 6. John Maunders (31) and Ton New with 24, contributed 46 for the second wicket but could only muster 3 boundaries between them as they struggled to get the ball off the square. Dinesh Mongia made only 2 and Jimmy Allenby and John Sadler made 14 and 19 respectively but it was once again Paul Nixon who gave the Foxes some respectability. The 35 year old hammered an unbeaten 34 from 24 balls, hitting 4 fours and 1 six to take the County to 151-6 from the rain reduced 39 overs.

Durham's reply was initially a disaster as thanks to Ryan Cummins they were at 39-3. The youngster accounted for the wickets of dangermen Jimmy Maher and Gordon Muchall in an excellent spell of bowling. Jon Lewis with 36 and skipper Dale Benkenstein rallied before the latter fell to Maddy for 31 but Dinesh Mongia claimed 2 wickets in 2 balls, including the scalp of former Fox Otis Gibson for a first ball duck. At 125-7 it looked like Leicestershire were in the driving seat but some big hitting from wicketkeeper Mustard and Aussie born Thorp saw the Geordies home. Mustard made 31 from just 21 balls and Thorp, not known for his batting, hit 2 sixes in a 13 ball 26. Ryan Cummins was the only County bowler to emerge with any credit and picked up the impressive figures of 2-14 from 6 overs.

Snape and Ackerman miss Durham trip (29/5/06)

Jeremy Snape and HD Ackerman will both miss the C&G Trophy match at Durham today. Snape is still nursing a cracked thumb and HD Ackerman is rested so as not to re-occur a long standing groin injury.

There are chances for youngsters in this match though as Leicestershire's chances in this competition are minimal. Tom New, Jimmy Allenby, Ryan Cummins and Steven Clark are all included in the squad and there is also the expected omission of the rested Stuart Broad. Mohammad Asif could be Leicestershire colours for the last time as he is expected to fly out to Pakistan next week for a pre-England tour get together and there is still no news on his replacement. Alamgir Sheriyar also comes back into the reckoning.

Squad:

Darren Maddy, John Maunders, Tom New, Dinesh Mongia (capt), John Sadler, Paul Nixon (wkt), Steven Clark, Jimmy Allenby, Claude Henderson, David Masters, Ryan Cummins, Mohammad Asif, Alamgir Sheriyar.

Somerset v LCCC - Championship (24-27/5/06)

Team:

John Maunders, Darren Maddy, HD Ackerman, Dinesh Mongia (capt), John Sadler, Steven Clark, Paul Nixon (wkt), Claude Henderson, Stuart Broad, David Masters, Mohammad Asif.

Day 1

Leicestershire 132-4 (Mongia 39 not out)

Winning the toss, Somerset put Leicestershire into bat and quickly justified their decision as former Fox Charl Willoughby trapped lbw, the out of form Darren Maddy for 3. John Maunders, who celebrated the birth of his baby daughter at the weekend and HD Ackerman took the total to 50 before Maunders was given out lbw to Richard Johnson for 27. Ackerman fell shortly afterwards once again to Johnson for 25 and it was upto Dinesh Mongia and John Sadler to steady the ship and they took the County past the 100 mark before Sadler was dismissed by Trego for 18. In amongst rain interruptions Dinesh Mongia crept his way to 39 not out and was kept company at the crease by Paul Nixon who finished the day on 11 not out as the rain once again did it's thing, meaning a premature end to the first day's play.

Day 2

Leicestershire 254 all out (Nixon 72), Somerset 138-5

Paul Nixon continued his fine form by making 72 as the County made 254 all out and Stuart Broad was back to form once again by claiming 3 early wickets as Somerset recovered from 41-4 to finish on 138-5.

Day 3

Somerset 314 all out (Broad 4-62), Leicestershire 2nd Innings 145-4 (Ackerman 64, Mongia 49)

The Foxes will have been disappointed to let Somerset achieve a 300+ score as the home side's rear guard were in defiant mood. Stuart Broad finished with 4-62 as Suppiah made 99, Blackwell (49) and Richard Johnson (40). The County's second innings got off to a nighmare start as both John Maunders and Darren Maddy both fell cheaply again but HD Ackerman with 64 and Dinesh Mongia with 49 both steadied the ship to leave the Foxes on 145-4 at stumps.

Day 4

Leicestershire 2nd Innings 254-5 (Nixon 71 not out) Match Drawn

Only just under 30 overs were possible on the final day meaning that at a draw was the inevitable outcome, but there was enough time for Paul Nixon to make his second 70+ innings of the match and for new signing Steven Clark make an unbeaten 23.

Team ratings:

Maunders 5, Maddy 5, Ackerman 8, Mongia 8, Sadler 6, Nixon 10*, Clark 7, Henderson 6, Broad 8, Masters 6, Asif 6.

Broad named in Development squad (19/5/06)

Leicestershire youngster Stuart Broad has been named in the 25 man England Development squad for the forthcoming international summer programme.

It is a major honour for the 19 year old, who only made his first team debut last season and it looks like he is to be fast tracked into international cricket. Broad is the youngest member of the elite squad which England coach Duncan Fletcher will pick from for this seasons Test and One Day international matches.

Full Development Squad

Michael Vaughan, James Anderson, Ian Bell, Ian Blackwell, Stuart Broad, Rikki Clarke, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Andrew Flintoff, Ashley Giles, Steve Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Geraint Jones, Simon Jones, Ed Joyce, Jon Lewis, Alex Loudon, Sajid Mahmood, Monty Panesar, Kevin Pietersen, Liam Plunkett, Chris Read, Owais Shah, Andrew Strauss, Marcus Trescothick.

Derbyshire v LCCC - Championship (17-20/5/06)

Day 1

Derbyshire 132-0 (Di Venuto 90 not out)

Winning the toss was always going to define this match and it was Derbyshire who won the flip of the coin and they predictably elected to bat first. But the whether was a bigger factor as only 36 overs were possible due to rain and it was the home side that dominated as at close they were 132-0 with Michael Di Venuto making 90 of those runs. David Masters and Mohammad Asif bowled relatively economically but Stuart Broad struggled and went for 31 runs from just 4 overs.

Day 2

Derbyshire 399-6 (Stubbings 119, Birt 119, Masters 4-89)

Once again, the rain interrupted proceedings but not the extent of the first day as Derbyshire continued to dominate and closed at 399-6. Travis Birt and Steve Stubbings both made 119 and David Masters was the only Leicestershire bowler to emerge with any credit from the innings by claiming 4-89 from a mammoth 40 overs. A win is impossible for the Foxes but they must make sure that when they finally come out to bat that they keep their concentration and deliver a solid performance to secure the draw.

Day 3

Derbyshire 401-6 declared,

Leicestershire 137-4 (Sadler 52 not out, Snape 30 not out)

More rain meant that play did not start until after lunch and Derbyshire reached the 400 mark and gained an extra batting point after two balls and subsequently declared on 401-6.

Leicestershire's reply started abysmally as John Maunders (0), Darren Maddy (1), HD Ackerman (13) and Dinesh Mongia (10) all fell cheaply to leave the County struggling at 49-4. Enter John Sadler and skipper Jeremy Snape who eased the fears of the follow on with a fifth wicket stand of 88. Sadler claimed his second half century in successive innings with a unbeaten 52 and Jeremy Snape grafted and backed up well with 30 not out.

Day 4

Match Abandoned as a Draw with no play possible due to rain - Leicestershire 6 points, Derbyshire 9 points

County look at Aussie paceman (16/5/06)

Leicestershire have handed a trial to Australian fast bowler Steve Magoffin as they prepare for the future loss of Mohammad Asif.

6ft 5 inch Magoffin, 26, who plays in his homeland for Western Australia, lines up for the County Second XI this week as he looks to impress the management. He certainly arrives on the back of some excellent form down under, as in March he claimed career best figures of 8-47 for WA against South Australia.

Meanwhile, HD Ackerman, Jeremy Snape, Mohammad Asif and Stuart Broad all return after either injury or illness for tomorrow's Championship match at Derby but it looks like Darren Robinson might still be ruled out, so John Sadler should retain his place after an impressive knock against Glamorgan last week.

Team:

John Sadler, Darren Maddy, HD Ackerman, John Maunders, Dinesh Mongia, Jeremy Snape (capt), Paul Nixon (wkt), Claude Henderson, Stuart Borad, David Masters, Mohammad Asif.

LCCC V Worcestershire - C&G Trophy (14/5/06)

A depleted Leicestershire side slumped to heavy 61 run defeat at the hands of Worcestershire in the C&G Trophy on Sunday.

The County were without the services of the injured or ill Darren Robinson, HD Ackerman, Jeremy Snape, Stuart Broad and Mohammad Asif but the performance was still disappointing.

Winning the toss and batting first, Worcestershire started briskly but the return of Alamgir Sheriyar against his former club was impressive as he picked up excellent figures of 3-35 on his Foxes 'debut'. Former County man Ben Smith made 59 and Roger Sillence a quick fire 44 as the visitors posted a rain affected 191-8 from 45 overs. David Masters was expensive for his only wicket but Ryan Cummins picked up 2-28 and Jimmy Allenby bowled five very economical overs.

The County experienced a nightmare start as they slumped to a dreadful 38-6 as Maunders, Maddy, New, Mongia, Sadler and Allenby failed to reach double figures. But step forward Sir Paul Nixon MBE who single almost single handedly saved the Foxes from total humiliation.'Nico' made a sensational 67 including 2 sixes and it was David Masters who was the only other batsmen to reach double figures with 12. Worcestershire's England spinner Gareth Batty helped himself to splendid figures of 4-27 as the attack polished off Leicestershire (bar Nixon) with considerable ease.

Sheriyar signs (13/5/05)

Alamgir Sheriyar has signed a deal with Leicestershire until the end of the season and goes straight into the squad to face his former county Worcestershire at Grace Road in the C&G Trophy on Sunday. The 32 year old left arm seamer has been on trial with the Foxes for the last month and has obviously demonstrated the required fitness to Leicestershire coach Tim Boon.

Tom New could get the chance to impress as Darren Robinson and HD Ackerman are bothe ruled out again through injury and the impressive Jimmy Allenby and Ryan Cummins return, with Stuart Broad rested due to a sore ankle.

Squad

John Maunders, Darren Maddy, Tom New, Dinesh Mongia, John Sadler, Jeremy Snape (capt), Paul Nixon (wkt), Jimmy Allenby, Claude Henderson, David Masters, Ryan Cummins, Mohammad Asif, Alamgir Sheriyar.

LCCC v Glamorgan - Championship (9-12/5/06)

Day 1

Leicestershire 303-3 (Mongia 142 not out, Sadler 47 not out, Maunders 71)

Leicestershire took command on the the first day as Dinesh Mongia continued his sparkling championship form with 142 not out. John Maunders also made 71 and the returning John Sadler was unbeaten at close on 47 not out.

Day 2

Leicestershire 525 all out (Mongia 161, Sadler 77, Nixon 70 not out)

Glamorgan 90-2 (Masters 1-18, Asif 1-20)

Dinesh Mongia could only add 19 more runs to his overnight total to finish with 161 but John Sadler, playing his first championship match of the season made 77 and Paul Nixon continued his excellent start of the season with 70 not out. In reply, Glamorgan were struggling as Mohammad Asif and David Masters took a wicket each to leave the visitors at 90-2 at close.

Day 3

Glamorgan - 1st Innings 297 all out (Henderson 4-77), 2nd Innings 37-1

Leicestershire remained in a strong position going into the final day as they dismissed Glamorgan for 297. Claude Henderson once again excelled with the ball, bowling 38 overs with figures of 4-77. David Masters, Mohammed Asif and Stuart Broad all finished with two wickets each. Forced to follow on, the visitors found themselves at 37-1 at stumps with Asif picking up the wicket of Robert Croft with only the second ball of the innings.

Day 4

Glamorgan 267-5 (Cherry 91) - Match Drawn

The Foxes couldn't find enough in the tank to dismiss Glamorgan again as the visitors ground out the draw. Claude Henderson bowled 37 overs for just 75 runs and took the wicket of Daniel Cherry (91) and Darren Maddy picked up 2-71. The County will regard this as a moral victory though as they completely dominated the match and picked up maximum bonus points and took away a total of 12 points. Unfortunately Mohammad Asif, due to illness and Stuart Broad, who was nursing a sore ankle, did not bowl many overs between them, which hindered the County's chances of victory.

Derbyshire v LCCC - C&G Trophy (7/5/06)

Leicestershire rounded off an excellent week with a disappointing defeat at the hand of local rivals Derbyshire in the C&G Trophy Northern Conference clash. Darren Robinson was ruled out with a thigh injury so John Sadler got the chance to impress for the first time this season.

Batting first, the County found runs hard to come by on a very slow pitch with Darren Maddy falling early for 9 but John Maunders and HD Ackerman plugged away before Maunders fell for 22 to Mo Sheik. Dinesh Mongia could not repeat his championship form as he fell for 7 and Ackerman was dismissed by Travis Birt's first ball for a gutsy 33 despite suffering a groin injury. The returning John Sadler (28), skipper Jeremy Snape with 34 and Paul Nixon who made 27 not out, all found it tough to up the tempo as the Foxes reached their rain affected allotment of 45 overs at 188-6.

Leicestershire claimed the early rub out of big hitter Steve Stubbings with Derbyshire having 29 on the board but recent signing Chris Taylor saw the home side to victory with a patient 66 not out as Ryan Cummins, Dinesh Mongia and Jimmy Allenby claimed the wickets of Di Venuto, Birt and Hassan Adnan respectively. Derby reached their Duckworth-Lewis revised total of 190 with 8 balls to spare and the Foxes were once again defeated by their neighbours.

Essex v LCCC - Championship (3-6/5/06)

Day 1

Dinesh Mongia and HD Ackerman both hit centuries as Leicestershire built up an impressive total today of 392-5 at Chelmsford. Mongia was unbeaten at close with a magnificent 158 not out and shared in a third wicket stand of 170 with HD Ackerman who made 111.

The County started badly as Darren Maddy fell early for just 2 but former Essex man Darren Robinson powered his way to his half century from just 59 balls before eventually falling to Ryan ten Doeschate for 53. Once Ackerman had been caught behind by James Foster off Tim Phillips, new batsman John Maunders only lasted for a run-less two balls, again becoming a victim for Phillips. Jeremy Snape (29) shared in a stand of 76 with Mongia before being trapped leg before by Tony Pallidino but Paul Nixon, with 18 not out, and Mongia kept the Foxes in a strong position going into the second day.

Day 2

Mohammad Asif picked up his first 5 wicket haul for Leicestershire to leave them in a commanding position at close. Asif claimed 5-56 as Essex tumbled to 242 all out and were forced to follow on and finished the day on 72-1.

Resuming on 392-5, the County added only 25 more runs as Tony Pallidino claimed the final five wickets and finished with career best figures of 6-68. Dinesh Mongia added only seven runs to his overnight total to finish on 165 and there was no support from the lower order as the County were all out for 417.

Essex's reply started dreadfully as they were reduced to 29-4 by David Masters and Asif. James Foster (30) and Ryan ten Doeschate (33) provided some resistance but it was lower order batters, Tim Phillips with 49 and Graham Napier who scored 62 who gave the home side some respectability to finish at 242 all out and being forced to follow on. As well as Asif's five wickets David Masters picked up 2-44 and there were solitary wickets for Ryan Cummins, Claude Henderson and Mongia.

Essex started the follow on much more brightly but Mohammad Asif will feel unlucky not to have added further wickets after beating the bat on many occasions. It was Henderson who made the breakthrough though as he had Mark Pettini caught by Darren Robinson for 30 with the home side closing at 72-1 and still 103 runs behind the Foxes first innings total.

Day 3

Leicestershire claimed their first Championship win of the season as the finished the match a day early and beating Essex by 8 wickets, largely thanks to the bowling of Claude Henderson and Ryan Cummins.

South African spinner Henderson, with 5-69 and seamer Cummins, who claimed 3-54, took centre stage and showed that the Foxes have strength in depth in the bowling department. Essex could only manage a second innings total of 222 and it was only former Leicestershire overseas player Grant Flower that provided a decent contribution with 59. David Masters also impressed and put in another very economical performance by conceding just 23 runs from his 20 overs. Set only 48 to win, the Foxes suffered a couple of scares as Darren Robinson (13) and Darren Maddy (16) fell to Pallidino and Napier respectively but it was first innings centurion HD Ackerman with an unbeaten 14 and John Maunders (4 not out) that saw the County home and capped off a very satisfying and excellent all round performance from the team.

Robinson 7, Maddy 5, Ackerman 9, Mongia 9, Maunders 5, Snape 6, Nixon 6, Henderson 9, Masters 8, Asif 9, Cummins 8.

Broad misses Essex trip due to England A call up (3/5/06)

Stuart Broad misses the the Championship match versus Essex at Chelmsford after being selected for the England A squiad that faces the Sri Lankan tourists this week. After impressing the onlooking chief selector David Graveney with his five wicket haul against Surrey last week the 19 year old gets a further chance to represent his country.

Ryan Cummins looks set to replace Broad for the today's match after not letting anyone down with his performance in the C&G versus Warwickshire. John Sadler returns to the squad but there is no place for match winning hero Jimmy Allenby.

Squad:

Darren Robinson, Darren Maddy, HD Ackerman, Dinesh Mongia, John Maunders, Jeremy Snape (capt), Paul Nixon (wkt), David Masters, Mohammad Asif, Claude Henderson, Ryan Cummins, John Sadler.

LCCC v Warwickshire - C&G Trophy Northern Conference (1/5/06)

Leicestershire picked up their first win of the season over neighbours Warwickshire at Grace Road thanks in particular to Jimmy Allenby. The 23 year old Australian born all rounder picked up superb figures of 4-19 from seven overs as the County restricted the vistors to a rain affected 128-9.

After putting Warwickshire into bat, the County made a positive start through two early wickets from Mohammad Asif and only Ian Westwood provided any notable resistence with 48. David Masters and Dinesh Mongia both picked up a wicket each but it was Allenby who shone with his first ever wickets for the Foxes.

With rain affecting matters, the County were set a Duckworth/Lewis target of 125 which was further reduced by more rain to a target of 116 from 30 overs. Darren Robinson (47) and Darren Maddy (with a fiery 53) shared in an opening stand of 104 and and despite the loss of three quick wickets the Foxes were seen home by Mongia and John Maunders with seven overs to spare.

LCCC v Surrey - Championship - (26-29/4/06)

Day 1

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Surrey remained unbeaten at the close of day one on 320-4.

It was slow going for the visitors and also lost the early wicket of Scott Newman to David Masters but Jon Batty (54), Mark Ramprakash (113) and Mark Butcher with 75 not out ensured that they built up a healthy total.

Even though the majority of bowling was tight, the County struggled to take wickets on a slow pitch. Masters conceded just 33 runs in in his 22 overs which included 10 maidens and Stuart Broad finished with 2-62 from 17 overs. Mohammed Asif, making his championship debut, struggled to make an impact having bowled 23 overs without taking a wicket.

Day 2

Stuart Broad claimed career best figures of 5-94 as the 19 year old polished off Surrey with the visitors adding just 50 runs to their overnight total of 320-4 to finish 370 all out. Mohammad Asif also weighed in with his first championship wickets for Leicestershire with a haul of 2-76 which included the wicket of Pakistan team-mate Azhar Mahmood.

In reply, the County lost Darren Robinson early on for 9 but Darren Maddy was in explosive form and helped himself to a near run-a-ball 43 before being bowled by Mahmood just before lunch. Dinesh Mongia (4) and HD Ackerman (15) and Jeremy Snape with 4 fell cheaply, but it was John Maunders who rescued the innings. The emerging all rounder played a patient and gritty 87 and was given good back up by Paul Nixon with 20, Claude Henderson who scored 14 and Stuart Broad who made an excellent 83 ball 24. Maunders and co carried the County to avoid the follow on, finishing with a total of 244 all out at stumps.

Day 3

Leicestershire were made to wait for their first wicket as opening pair Scott Newman and Jon Batty shared a second innings opening partnership of 113 before Darren Maddy removed the latter for 41. Then the wickets strated to tumble as Mohammed Asif had Newman caught behind for 75 and David Masters then took centre stage with three quick wickets which included the dismissal of danger man Ally Brown for a first ball duck. Asif and Stuart Broad then removed Azhar Mahmood (for a first ball duck) and Ian Salisbury respectively before once again Mark Butcher (85 not out)  and Tim Murtagh (37 not out) frustrated the bowlers with an eighth wicket stand of exactly 100. Upon reaching this landmark, Surrey decided to declare on 287-7, setting the Foxes a daunting winning target of 414.

The chase got off to a disappointing start as Darren Robinson fell cheaply again for 13 to Mahmood with 21 runs on the board. Luckily Darren Maddy (18 not out) and HD Ackerman, with a fluent unbeaten 38, guided the County to 74-1 at close and left them requiring 340 runs for victory going into the final day.

Day 4

With the chances of Leicestershire recording a victory at the start of the day being limited, they will feel very disappointed not to have drawn or even won! At one stage the County were in a great position at 233-4 but the predictable batting collapse ensured defeat by 99 runs.

Having resumed on 74-1, HD Ackerman promptly completed his half century before being dismissed by Azhar Mahmood for 55 but it was Darren Maddy who held the innings together and gave the County a fighting chance of getting something from the mach. Once again, Dinesh Mongia (15) failed with the bat and John Maunders could not repeat his first innings heroics and fell for 7. Maddy held firm though and shared in a firth wicket stand of 76 with Jeremy Snape before the skipper was felled by Rikki Clarke. Maddy followed shortly afterwards for an excellent 198 ball 97, although he will be kicking himself for not reaching his century. Paul Nixon once again displayed his typical determination with an unbeaten 31 and was given decent support from Stuart Broad (11) and most surprisingly last man Mohammad Asif who made 21 before getting carried away and being stumped by Jon Batty off Ian Salisbury. The final total of 314 all out didn't tell the whole story but the loss of the last five wickets for just 80 runs most certainly did.

Lancashire v LCCC - C&G Trophy North Conference (23/4/06)

Leicester first match in the newly re-formatted C&G Trophy ended in a 69 run at the hands of Lancashire at Old Trafford.

Batting first, Lancashire struggled to gather momentum as Stuart Broad accounted for the early wicket of Mark Chilton with just 5 on the board.  Mal Loye (32) and former County trialist Andrew Crook (42) moved the scored on slowly before Stuart increased the tempo with a more fluent 42. Dinesh Mongia was the main man in the bowling department and finished with excellent figures of 4-25 and alongside Broad's solitary wicket, Claude Henderson, Jeremy Snape and Mohammad Asif, on his Leicestershire debut, all claimed one scalp each in the home sides total of 194-8 from the 50 overs.

Things could not have got off to worse start as Darren Maddy fell for a first ball duck and John Sadler swiftly followed for 6. John Maunders with 38 and Dinesh Mongia (22) briefly threatened to make a match of it before the Indian became one of young Tom Smith's three victims alongside HD Ackerman for 0 and Jeremy Snape (2). Paul Nixon displayed his typical determination with a gritty 24 but the Foxes were finally bowled out in the 41st over for a paltry total of 125 and will be hoping to put this match down to lack of pre-season practice. Unfortunately for County, HD Ackerman was injured in the field and had to bat rather uncomfortably and with the aid of a runner.

Asif to make debut at Old Trafford (22/4/06)

Pakistan star Mohammed Asif will make his long awaited Leicestershire debut on Sunday versus Lancashire at Old Trafford.

The fast bowler, who only played for Pakistan as recently as Wednesday, is included in the 13 man squad for the C&G Trophy tussle. Aftab Habib is not included in the squad but their is a place for Anglo-Australian all rounder Jimmy Allenby. Stuart Broad should spearhead the County attack with Asif after returning from a knee injury.

Lancashire welcome back Sajid Mahmood from England duty and also include former Foxes opener Iain Sutcliffe in the squad. Although without the services of another former Fox and Aussie star Brad Hodge, the Lancastrians boast an impressive side. Stuart Law, who now counts as a domestic player has been one of the most consistent batsman in this country for the last ten years and Mark Chilton and Mal Loye are both capable of big runs. Dominic Cork along with Mahmood will open the bowling.

The C&G trophy has been totally transformed for 2006. Instead of the normal knock-out format, two divisions have been created, each for North and South, with each team player each other once over 50 overs. Bizarrely, the top County from each division will go through to the final at Lords, which means that there will be an incredible amount of 'dead matches' as when the competition reaches a certain stage, most teams will have nothing to play for because their chances of topping the division would be impossible! We shall see how it goes!

Leicestershire Squad:

Darren Robinson, Darren Maddy, HD Ackerman, Dinesh Mongia, John Maunders, John Sadler, Jeremy Snape (capt), Paul Nixon (wkt), Stuart Broad, Claude Henderson, David Masters, Mohammad Asif, James Allenby.

Lancashire Squad:

Chilton (capt), Sutcliffe, Law, Loye, Horton, Croft, Sutton, Chapple, Crook, Cork, Hogg, Smith, Mahmood, Newby, Keedy.

Leicestershire v Loughborough UCCE - 3 day match (19-21/4/06)

Leicestershire's season got off to a damp start as the entire match versus Loughborough UCCE was called off without a ball being bowled.

The Foxes, who were without the services of the rested Darren Maddy, HD Ackerman and Dinesh Mongia have had a dreadful time with the weather so far as they have only managed to complete one match, including friendly matches, this season.

The wash out also denied County wicket-keeper/batsman Paul Harrison the chance to line up for the students against his Leicestershire team mates. Although he did have some reason for celebration, as he has been called up to the forthcoming British Universities squad.

Broad out of MCC match (11/4/06)

After just receiving a call up to represent the MCC in a match against county champions Nottinghamshire, Stuart Broad has had to pull out of the fixture with a knee injury.

The 19 year old, who has had an amazing year in which he made his debut for Leicestershire and received call ups to the ECB National Academy and then the England A squad, should hopefully be back in contention for the start of the Foxes' season and he is being monitored on a day to day basis.

County find win amongst the rain (11/4/06)

Leicestershire claimed an exciting win over Nottinghamshire in a 50 over friendly match at Trent Bridge on Monday.

The County made 284-8 when batting first with the most significant contributions coming from HD Ackerman who scored 75, Darren Robinson (65), Aftab Habib made 52 and John Sadler (47).

In reply, Notts fell five runs short of the target with Mark Ealham cracking a quick fire 79. Chris Liddle with 2-38 and Ryan Cummins who took 2-40 were the pick of the Foxes attack.

On Sunday, in a rain affected match wih no result, Alamgir Sheriyar staked his claim for a contract by taking 2-38 and on Tuesday, no play whatsoever was allowed due to rain in another one day match at Trent Bridge but the Second XI did see some action before the rain arrived. In a match versus Loughborough University, the seconds made 218-3 from 50 overs with new signing Marc Rosenberg scoring an unbeaten 104 and Paul Nixon making 79 not out.

The County are next in action on Saturday in a friendly match at Kibworth.

County look at two more trialists (9/4/06)

Leicestershire have handed trials to two former university players and they will get their chance in the forthcoming matches with Nottinghamshire.

24 year old former Loughborough UCCE man Stephen Clark is a bowling all rounder and seamer Daniel Rowe has arrived from Cardiff University.

Both men will be hoping to do enough to earn an extended stay at Grace Road

Asif on fire! (7/4/06)

New overseas signing Mohammed Asif has continued his glorious form for Pakistan by taking match figures of 11-71 for Pakistan in their recent test match with Sri Lanka.

The 23 year old, who arrives in time for the start of the new season, is now emerging as Pakistan's number one pace bowler having taken a remarkable 24 wickets in his last three tests. Foxes fans will be eager to see Asif in action at Grace Road to see if he can carry on his glorious form. Unfortunately, because of his performances, it is now a certainty that he will be called into the Paksistan squad that tours England this summer which means he will only be available for the Leicestershire for the first two months of the season.

Meanwhile, the County have added 24 year Marc Rosenberg to their squad for the forthcoming season. South African born Rosenberg is a former Loughborough UCCE player and has also played first class cricket in South Africa for North West and is primarily a big hitting batsman but does also bowl medium pace.

Sheriyar in on trial (31/3/06)

Alamgir Sheriyar has been handed the chance by Tim Boon to resurrect his Leicestershire career after joining the county on trial.

The 32 year old, who was released by Kent at the end of last season, made only a handful of appearances for the Foxes in the mid 1990's but did make an impression by claiming a first class hat-trick whilst with the club. The left arm seamer left Grace Road for Worcestershire where he enjoyed the best years of his career so far and with his consistent wicket taking he gained England A selection.

With the loss of seamers Phil Defreitas, Charl Willoughby, Charlie Dagnall and most notably Ottis Gibson, the pace attack needs improvement and Sheriyar will get every chance to stake his claim in the forthcoming pre-season fixtures.

Meanwhile, the friendly match with Northants, which was scheduled to take place at Grace Road on Monday, has been cancelled due to recent rain.

Snape named as new captain (24/1/06)

Jeremy Snape has been appointed as the new captain of Leicestershire after HD Ackerman's decision to stand down from the position.

Snape, 32, is seen by new coach Tim Boon as the man to take Leicestershire forward in 2006. Both men know each other well after working together in the England One-Day squad and Snape's guile, intelligence and adaptability make him an outstanding choice for skipper.

After limiting himself to mainly one-day appearances last season because of a Masters Degree in Sports Psychology, 'Snapper' will finish the course in March and will be available again on a full time basis.

Ackerman cited that the reason for him to relinquish his leadership was to concentrate solely on improving his batting for the forthcoming season as he had found it hard to combine both duties well on foreign soil. With Ackerman clearly the Foxes top batter in 2005 it is an exciting prospect that he thinks there is even more to come from him.

Boon unveiled as new coach (10/1/06)

Leicestershire have confirmed that Assistant England coach Tim Boon has been appointed to the role of Senior Coach.

Boon, 44, returns to Grace Road where he spent 15 years as a player and will take up his new position from the start of February. The Yorkshireman is the one of the most highly regarded coaches in the game and was a key member of the Duncan Fletcher's England backroom team that masterminded the Ashes triumph last year.

In his many years as a Foxes player, Boon scored more than 11,000 first class runs and was granted a benefit in 1995. After retiring from cricket he swiftly moved into coaching with Minor County Norfolk before stints with the England U-17 and Under-19 sides before his elevation to the full national team.

The move comes quickly after the news before Christmas that Director of Cricket James Whitaker was relieved of his duties with the club insisting that they wanted a more 'hands on' approach to coaching.

With the impressive appointment of Boon, it appears that they have got that type of man but the new coach will have his work cut out this season as the squad is still desperately thin on the ground. Ottis Gibson, who moved to Durham, has yet to be replaced and the two overseas signings have brought disappointment to fans. True, we have some very exciting youngsters coming through but an experienced batsmen and an experienced bowler are required to avoid a disappointing 2006.
