Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword Of Chaos

Developer/Publisher: Tecmo

Introduction:

Hmm....lesse. No one's gone 8-bit yet. I guess I'll take care of it.=D

It was the end of the 80's, and the start of a new gaming age.

In 1990, Tecmo gave Ninja Gaiden fans, like myself, a new reason to rejoice with their sequel to the first game in the chapter, Ninja Gaiden II. This got a lot of hopefuls excited, and for good reason, too. The first Ninja Gaiden was just too much to forget, even to this day.

So, the plot goes like this...

Ryu Hayabusa, our main character, has defeated his former nemesis, Jacquio. However, the story doesn't end there....

A new enemy by the name of Ashtar, has devised a new plan, and it involves Ryu's Sweetheart, Irene. He quickly captures her and makes his way to his fortress, The Tower Of Lahja. Ryu must seek him out and uncover his plot, but fortnately(and this seemed to be a growing trend in Ninja Gaiden games for NES), Ryu gets help from a new Informant, Robert from the U.S.Army's Special Intelligence Unit. Ryu will aslo discover the origin of Ashtar's weapon, The "Sword Of Chaos", and will also discover that an old enemy will also be waiting in the wings.

Sound hard, well, trust me. It IS. But luckily, you aren't without help......and you'll need all the help you can get.

Graphics: A

Even though this is an 8-bit cart, it still deserves a admirable amount of praise. 16-bit was a pretty new experience back then and it was pretty much unheard of, but we were quite content with 8-bit, and this game did it's job Graphic-wise. Fluent movement in Ryu's actions and even some of the enemies haxe a bit of flair to them. The background artwork is what really gave me my final decision to give this game the grade it so righteously deserves. Truly Awe-inspiring.

Sound: B+

The sound you can either take or leave. But I still like it a lot. The music is the one thing to this game I loved the most, and one of the main reasons to play a Ninja Gaiden cart.8-bit Nintendo games, in general, just gaves us that unique electronic sound that no one can forget, and is still used to this day in many things. So I'd say my grade, as it stands, is pretty fair.

Control: A

A: Jump B: Slash Up+B: Ninja Art. As long as you can remember all of that, you'll have no problem with the control. everything is easily done. EASILY EASILY done. Anyone who has a problem with the way this game is controlled has obviously been living under a rock for like......2 1/2 decades or so. You get it. Flawless Control.

Gameplay: A+

Oh yeah. This game is Friggin' FUN. And there is a LOT you can pull off AND do. Unlike the first Ninja Gaiden game, Ryu has access to a new item where a red shadow of himself will appear and make his every move. You can have up to 2, but even then, the points'll just rack right up. He also has new ninja arts at his disposal, and the giant shuriken can stay on the screen and keep blasting away enemies if done correctly, meaning less disposal of Ninja arts. Ryu can also Not only cling to walls, like the First Ninja Gaiden, but he can also climb up and down them, making it easier to get around. The enemies can sometimes be a bit cheap.....ok. REALLY cheap, but with the right combination of Ninja Arts and shadow clones, you can get past any situation. Yeah I forgot to mention that the shadow clones can pull off ninja arts too without extra consumtion of Ninja Arts. Not bad for just 2 buttons, huh?

Overall: A+

It is difficult NOT to love this game. Once you play it, you will be hooked. It has a good storyline, excellent music, flawless control, and fun and fast-paced gameplay. All these elements, combined, make the PERFECT game. Even if it's just 8-bit, it is something to NEVER be forgotten. Make sure you give this game a try. Also, be sure check out the first in the series. Doesn't have as much as 2, but I guarantee, you'll be equally hooked.
