Double Dragon 2: The Revenge
Developer: Technos Publisher: Technos
Introduction:
With the success of Double Dragon in the arcades, it was no surprise that a sequel would be on its way. Enter Double Dragon 2: The Revenge. The name pretty much says it all; right after the events of the first Double Dragon, Billy's girlfriend Marian is brutally shot to death by Willy, the leader of the Black Warriors. Obviously he was still bitter about his loss to the Lee twins. Billy and Jimmy, hearing about this, set out to avenge the death of Marian, and to return the favor to Willy. While the plot is somewhat better than the first, this game feels more like Double Dragon 1.5 than a full sequel. And you'll see why...

Graphics: A
I've got to admit, I'm a sucker for the graphic quality of Technos' games! And DD2 is no exception! Although most of the character's sprites are identical to the original's, they have a much crisper and cleaner look. Also, almost all of the enemies from the first game have been given total facial makeovers (with the exception of Jeff)...and for the better! also, Billy and Jimmy have been given some new slick outfits too! And it's great seeing Abobo with long hair and Linda with the red mohawk. It gives you that sense that this game was indeed made in the 80's. The characters also move alittle more fluidly than the first game. And I can't help but point out that Technos' trademark coloring has gone into great effect here! Great stuff!
Sound: A
Another strong point for this game! The music in this game, like any other DD game, is very memorable and will have you humming a few of it's tunes. It also has the popular 80's rhythm that was popular during that decade (Mission 3 is my favorite). However, much like the first game, it doesn't quite hold up well by today's standards...but it still sounds pretty damn good.Unique to this game, however, is the fact that every single one of the enemies have their own individual grunts and yells whenever they're defeated (and some sound very humorous). The punches and kicks sound alittle more crisp than the first game, but they still don't sound any different from one another. But to sum it all up, the sound is very good and very memorable.
Control: B+
I'm kind of mixed on this one. Although the controls respond right on command and feel very comfortable, I can't help but be a tad disappointed with them. Why am I you ask? Well because Technos decided to reverse them depending on the side you're facing. For example; if you're facing right and press the kick button, your character will kick backwards instead of forward. And vice versa to the other side. It just gets a tad confusing in the heat of battles sometimes. I know they were trying to be different, but I personally think they should've stuck with the original's control layout. Also, sometimes when you attempt to do your hurricane kick, it will not even respond! So sometimes you'll just jump in he air and look like a retard. But overall, the controls are pretty tight, but it could've taken a step forward than backwards.
Gameplay: A
The most important category. The gameplay is very topnotch. Also, those thinking that since Double Dragon 1 was cake and you can easily go through DD2, you're in for a rude awakening. DD2 is perhaps one of the most challenging in the series, especially on hard! The enemies will have no problem showing you the error of your ways. New to the cast is a fat guy with a mask named Burnov. He's pretty tough and if you stand directly in front of him he will grab you by the hair and beat the crap out of you. But when ganged up on, he's generally a weakling. Also new is a big guy with sunglasses and suspenders who looks just like a buffed up Hank Hill named Abore. He's perhaps one of the most annoying and strongest people in the entire game. DO NOT try to fight him toe to toe with him as he will either bitch smack you, kick you, or shoulder block you! All of which do a great deal of damage! Next is Chin Taimei, another strong and annoying character. His jump kick and repeated death blows with his tonfas, as well as his leg sweep will take you out in a second. Yes, he's that strong! And finally is Oharra. He's nothing more than a Abobo clone. Nuff said about him.
All of the levels have some kind of trick up their sleeves. Whether it's a tractor in the cornfields trying to take you out, or statues trying to shot you, the levels are non-linear...which is a good thing. However, these levels are nothing more than souped up levels from the first DD. That's right, the Mission 2 level is the exact same thing from the original DD while Mission 3 is nothing more than the one from the original with different scenery. You can also, pick up weapons and do the famous elbow smash...but the AI rarely falls for those tricks anymore. Speaking of the weapons, they're nothing more than the ones from the first DD...but with different design. You can still kick the weapons around (big steel ball, logs) if you don't want to get your hands dirty in the process. New to this game though, is the hovering spin kick. It's a welcome addition and is quite useful...but good luck trying to connect it all of the time since half the time it won't respond right away. Basically, this game plays just like DD1, maybe a bit faster, but make no mistake, this IS DD1 with a facelift...which is a bit disappointing knowing Technos more than had enough time to put out a full fledged sequel. I mean the same glitches that were in the first game made it to this one for crying out loud!! But oh well, still a very fun and addicting game.
Overall: A-
Double Dragon 2 for the arcade is a solid game. But it could've just had alot more going for it. It's widely known that there's much debate as to which version of the game is better between the arcade and the NES. While many prefer the NES version due to it's totally different story and levels, the arcade version is still a great game. Also, I was a tad disappointed that after your efforts in the original game, they pretty much seemed to not matter since right at the very beginning of DD2 Marian gets killed. Makes it almost seem worthless to even complete the original. This is nothing more but DD1 with an expansion pack...but it's still a great and legendary game. Technos pretty much pulled another rabbit out of it's hat with this game. Don't pass up the chance to get a friend and play this gem!
