Atlantis ad spots show first footage
MAY 4, 2004

I don't know about you, but I have noticed the brand new ads' for Stargate Atlantis. They show the first footage from the upcoming series! Ten and 15-second versions of the two commercials are now airing in rotation on The Sci-Fi Channel.

The first ad shows the S.G.C. gate room crowded with personnel preparing to embark on the Atlantis mission, fronted by Colonel Sumner (Robert Patrick), Major Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and Dr. Beckett (Paul McGillion). Dr. Weir (Torri Higginson) is giving a speech from the ramp in front of the active Stargate, and says to the crowd, "You are the world's best and brightest. I'd like to offer you all one last chance to withdraw your participation."

In the second ad, Weir's line (no doubt from the same speech) is "You may never be able to return home." Viewers are then treated to a close-up of the screaming Wraith queen.

Here are shots from the two ads, including a frightening look at the female Wraith!

Look for the commercials now on Sci-Fi! Stargate Atlantis premieres on July 16.

Courtenay Stevens back for Stargate Atlantis
APRIL 29, 2004

Courtenay J. StevensActor Courtenay J. Stevens just might be on his way back to the Stargate universe, according to new information at the Internet Movie Database. The actor, who portrayed the recurring but ill-fated young recruit Lt. Elliot in three episodes of SG-1's fifth season, is listed as appearing in the Stargate Atlantis episode "Childhood's End," in the lead role of Keras.

The episode tells the story of a planet where no one is older than the age of 25, due to a practice of ritual suicide that the inhabitants believe keeps the Wraith away.

Other young actors cast for this episode, according to IMDb, include:

    Jessica Amlee as Cleo
    Sam Charles as Casta
    Alana Husband as Ennea
    Shane Meier as Neleus
    Julie Patzwald as Pelias
    Calum Worthy as Hunter Kid
    Dominic Zamprogna as Aries
Patzwald is also no stranger to Stargate -- she played Naytha in SG-1 Season Three's "A Hundred Days."

As much of IMDb's cast and crew listings come from fan submissions and are at times inaccurate, take this report with a grain of salt. "Childhood's End" should air this summer on Sci-Fi! Visit the Atlantis episode guide to read more about it.

First 'Childhood's End' plot details
APRIL 17, 2004

The first story details have arrived for the early Season One Atlantis episode "Childhood's End." The episode is sixth in the production order, and is scheduled to go before cameras late next week. "Childhood's End" is directed by David Winning, long-time Canadian film and television director (including numerous episodes of Andromeda) who makes his first Stargate appearance. The episode was written by Martin Guro, who joins the Stargate writing team this year as a full-time Atlantis writer.

Beware of spoilers in the report below!

Major Sheppard, McKay, Ford and Teyla crash-land their 'puddle jumper' ship on an alien world with a strong electro-magnetic field. There they meet Keras, one of the elders of the indigenous population -- only Keras is just 24 years old. There is no one older in the village, and the team soon learns the disturbing reason.

Long ago, the people of this world were among the many 'harvested' by the Wraith. (Their name for the Stargate is the 'Wraith well.') To try and protect their people from this, they instituted a practice of ritual suicide. Their culture believes that to die at the hands of an enemy prevents their souls from finding eternal rest -- so it is better to die at one's own hand before the Wraith come for you. Whenever one of them reaches his (or her) 25th birthday, he ends his life. The villages have come to rely on this to protect them from the Wraith, who have never returned in the 500 years since the practice was begun. And tomorrow is young Keras' 25th birthday.

The Atlantis team, however, discovers that it is the planet's powerful electro-magnetic field that is protecting them from the Wraith's interest. Major Sheppard must convince them to abandon their long-held beliefs -- that the death of Keras and so many others is not necessary. Meanwhile, Ares, another of the elders, plots against the intruders.

"Childhood's End" airs this summer on The Sci-Fi Channel.

First 'Poisoning the Well' plot details
APRIL 16, 2004

The first info on Stargate Atlantis' upcoming episode "Poisoning the Well" is now available! Casting has begun for the episode, which is set to be the seventh episode of the new spin-off series to go before cameras.

Beware of spoilers in the report below!

On the planet Hoff, scientists have been working for more than 150 years on a drug to protect them against the Wraith's regular feeding on their people. But whenever the Wraith come, the Hoffans lose nearly everyone who has been working on the drug. They keep some records, including Wraith cell samples, which the next generation eventually take up to continue the research.

Earth's Dr. Carson Beckett works closely with Perna on the drug and determines that a researcher named Mylan Farris discovered a particular protein that made human cells able to repel a Wraith feeding -- which Beckett himself witnesses in a petrie dish. But Farris was killed in the Wraith's last "culling" of the Hoffans, and Perna was left with the task of duplicating his work. This discovery is groundbreaking, and Dr. Beckett and Weir discuss whether or not it will work on the Wraith today.

Beckett has been doing tests on the arm brought back from Athosia (Athos), and thinks that the Hoffan drug may work. But it could only be a matter of time before the Wraith discover the humans of Hoff are being inoculated against them and hunt down every person who has been in contact with them. Hoff may be the newest smoking crater yet -- and the drug itself may have disastrous side-effects. "Poisoning the Well" should air this summer on The Sci-Fi Channel.

Two new Atlantis episode titles
APRIL 12, 2004

With production on Stargate Atlantis' inaugural season well underway, the first details on two new episodes have surfaced. Principal photography has wrapped on "Thirty-Eight Minutes" and "Hide and Seek,"the first episodes to be filmed after the show's 2-hour premiere, "Rising." The episodes may air as the second and third of the season, though The Sci-Fi Channel has yet to confirm their broadcast schedule for July.

"Thirty-Eight Minutes" may refer to the maximum amount of time a Stargate's wormhole can be maintained under normal conditions -- though the plot of the episode itself still remains a mystery. Actor David Nykl guest stars as Dr. Zelenka, according to the Internet Movie Database.

In "Hide and Seek," the Atlantis base is threatened when the team discovers that an alien entity is in the city. Dr. McKay experiments with alien technology, only to find himself in a precarious predicament. The episode is directed by David Warry-Smith, who has helmed 10 episodes of SG-1 to date.

Stargate Atlantis premieres July 16 on Sci-Fi.

Paul McGillion cast as Dr. Beckett
APRIL 6, 2004

Actor Paul McGillion has been cast in the recurring role of Dr. Beckett on Stargate Atlantis, GateWorld has learned. The Scottish medical doctor is introduced in the 2-hour premiere episode, and journeys with the international Atlantis team to the distant lost city. Beckett also learns that he possesses a very rare gene that enables him to use the Ancients' technology.
McGillion played the young Ernest Littlefield in the flashback scenes in "The Torment of Tantalus" in Stargate SG-1's first season. He has also appeared in numerous films and television series, including Smallville, Jake 2.0, The X-Files and The Sentinel. Check out his full filmography at the Internet Movie Database.
Stargate Atlantis is now in production, and premieres on The Sci-Fi Channel on July 16.

David Winning to direct Atlantis episode
APRIL 5, 2004

Award-winning television director David Winning will step behind the camera to head an episode of Stargate Atlantis, the director announced via his official Web Site. The show marks the seventeenth TV series for which Winning has directed, and his first time on Stargate. His long list of credits includes Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, Earth: Final Conflict, Dinotopia and more.
The third episode of Atlantis is currently in front of cameras in Vancouver, B.C. Winning's episode will begin filming late this month, and may lead to future episodes. The new spin-off series premieres July 16 on The Sci-Fi Channel.

Stargate Atlantis premiere date set
MARCH 6, 2004

The day is set! The Stargate franchise will gate to a whole new universe on Friday, July 16, 2004, when its second television series, Stargate Atlantis premieres. The 2-hour event will air at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific on The Sci-Fi Channel in the U.S.

The network has ordered another 18 episodes so far, which will air in the same time slot each week, after new episodes of Stargate SG-1.

MGM has recently launched it's official Web site for the new show atStargateAtlantis.com! In addition to the premiere date announcement, the growing site currently features a series synopsis, behind-the-scenes photos, concept art, and a press release detailing the new cast.

The Sci-Fi Channel also tonight debuted its first teaser ad for Atlantis. The camera rushes through an underwater environment up to a submerged Stargate (complete with blue chevrons), while displaying the words: "This summer the greatest secret in human history will be revealed."

First look at the Stargate Atlantis team
MARCH 2, 2004

GateWorld has acquired the first photo of the brand new Stargate Atlantis team, who will travel to the distant Pegasus galaxy in the upcoming spin-off series! The show began filming just last week in Vancouver, B.C., in anticipation of a July premiere on The Sci-Fi Channel in the U.S. The photo reveals the team's new and varied uniforms, which include a new "Atlantis" insignia on the right sleeve and a flag from the person's country of origin on the left (notice that Dr. McKay is sporting the flag of Canada). Dr. Weir is also now a brunette, as is to be expected with the switch from actress Jessica Steen (who plays a blonde Dr. Weir in the upcoming SG-1 season finale).

Stargate Atlantis is created and executive produced by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, two of the talents behind Stargate SG-1.

MARCH 1, 2004
Stargate Atlantis cast revealed!
The cast of Stargate Atlantis has finally been unveiled! GateWorld has exclusively obtained the official cast list for the new series, which is now set to premiere in July on The Sci-Fi Channel. Led by actor Joe Flanigan as Major John Sheppard, Atlantis includes five regular cast members, one of whom is a familiar face to SG-1 fans -- David Hewlett, whose character Dr. Rodney McKay will be a regular on the show.

"We have met with hundreds of actors in order to assemble just the right ensemble cast for this series, and we are certain that we have found the perfect Stargate Atlantis team," Hank Cohen, President, MGM Television Entertainment, told GateWorld. "We are confident that come July, Stargate fans all over the world will be thrilled as this terrific cast leads us on many new missions and explores countless new worlds in the Pegasus galaxy. All of us on the production side are gratified by The Sci-Fi Channel's belief in us by ordering this exciting extension of the Stargate brand directly to series, and airing it concurrently with the extremely popular SG-1."

Without further ado, meet the new team!

JOE FLANIGAN
as Major John Sheppard Leading the Stargate Atlantis team is Joe Flanigan. Flanigan earned a degree in history from the University of Colorado before becoming a full-time actor. He has appeared in such series as C.S.I. Miami, Tru Calling and Birds of Prey, and has played recurring characters on Profiler, Sisters, Providence and Dawson's Creek.

TORRI HIGGINSON
as Dr. Elizabeth Weir Ontario-born Higginson's list of credits includes "Storm of the Century," "The English Patient," and The Outer Limits. She also played the recurring role of Beth Kittridge in the "TekWar" TV movie series. Higginson replaces actress Jessica Steen, who played Dr. Weir in the Season Seven finale of Stargate SG-1 (airing in March). Weir is put in charge of the Atlantis mission, but is not military.

DAVID HEWLETT
as Dr. Rodney McKay Hewlett reprises his character of Dr. McKay, the arrogant but brilliant astrophysicist who traded barbs with Samantha Carter in SG-1 Season Five's "48 Hours" and Season Six's "Redemption." The 35-year-old actor is a native of Redhill, Surrey, England, and has also appeared in Without a Trace, ER, Twice in a Lifetime, and numerous films. McKay -- a Canadian -- is the only permanent cross-over from Stargate SG-1, and replaces the character of Dr. Benjamin Ingram, who was originally conceived for the new series.

RAINBOW SUN FRANCKS
as Lieutenant Aiden Ford A native of Toronto, Francks' list of credits includes Twice In a Lifetime, "Love Song" and "Love Come Down." He is also a VJ for Canada's MuchMusic, and a songwriter and producer for rap/hip-hop group The Oddities. His character, Lt. Ford, is an eager young officer who becomes Major Sheppard's second-in-command. (An interesting "Atlantis" connection: Francks is the brother of actress Cree Summer, who performed the voice of Princess Kida in Disney's Stargate-esque animated film "Atlantis: The Lost Empire.")

RACHEL LUTTRELL
as Teyla Emmagan Luttrell has made guest appearances on such shows as Charmed, Touched By an Angel, ER and Street Legal, and recently appeared with Gary Sinise and Madeleine Stowe in 2002's "Impostor." She plays Teyla (formerly "Mikala"), a leader among the alien people that the team meets on the post-apocalyptic planet Athos.

With the first week of filming on the new series complete, Stargate Atlantis executive producer and co-creator Brad Wright is enthusiastic about the new cast. "As amazing as our visual effects and production design are for Atlantis, the secret to a successful television series is a cast that people want to invite into their homes every week. After a week of shooting, Robert and I couldn't be happier," Wright told GateWorld. "Joe Flanigan's natural charm and sense of humor come through in every shot. Torri Higginson, Rainbow Francks and Rachel Luttrell are equally fabulous, and David Hewlett as Dr. McKay is brilliant and hilarious."

Stargate Atlantis is now in production in Vancouver, B.C.

More details on Atlantis premise
New details have arrived at my Stargate about just what the Stargate Atlantis universe will look like, and how it will differ from its predecessor, Stargate SG-1. Beware of numerous spoilers forthe new series -- especially the premiere episode, "Rising" -- in the report below, as well as for SG-1's upcoming Season Seven finale!

THE TECH. A team of scientists has been pouring over the Ancients' Antarctic outpost since SG-1 discovered it buried a mile beneath the ice in "The Lost City," and have learned that only people with a very rare gene are able to operate the intuitive technology found there -- one person in 16,000, to be exact. Dr. Benjamin Ingram is a brilliant scientist who works to interface Earth technology with that of the Ancients, but is frustrated by the fact that he himself does not possess the gene. Another of the scientists, however -- Dr. Beckett -- does possess the gene and accidentally launches an Ancient attack drone from the outpost. They also quickly learn that Major Sheppard has the gene; the ability to use the Ancients' tech will come in very handy when the team reaches the lost city of Atlantis in the distant Pegasus galaxy.

Vital to the operation of the city (and to the team's ability to gate to another galaxy) is the Z.P.M., an Ancient power module that was probably the basis for the device O'Neill constructed in "The Fifth Race" while under the influence of the Ancients' library of knowledge. Atlantis is powered by three of the devices.

As hoped, the lost city is indeed a treasure trove of advanced technology, which includes such things as a universal translation device. Each team member travelling off-world receives one, which is capable of instantly translating virtually any language encountered.

THE SHIPS. As an accomplished pilot, Sheppard is particularly interested in a bay filled with Ancient ships discovered in Atlantis. The ship of choice is nicknamed "Puddle Jumper," as it is designed to travel through the Stargate. In fact, the ship has a miniature dialing device on the main console, allowing remote-access dialing of the Stargate. It is also equipped with stealth mode, allowing it to become invisible. The ship seems to operate in part by reading the pilot's thoughts. The jumper is large enough to seat at least two at the forward controls, and at least six in the rear.

The enemy possesses advanced ships too, of course. The Wraith Dart is a small, maneuverable ship capable of gate travel. It is described as oily black, sharply pointed and with a glowing underside. The Wraith planet has a Stargate in orbit, indicating that it's rather common to travel the Stargate network by ship in this part of the universe.

ATLANTIS. The lost city of the Ancients is an island unto itself, surrounded by a vast body of water on the surface of a planet in the Pegasus galaxy (... eventually). It has been abandoned by the Ancients but left in perfect condition, and the team from Earth must begin the task of exploring it. Atlantis is equipped with a powerful energy shield, which is vital to protecting the new base of operations from enemy attack. Within the city is, of course, a Stargate -- but one unlike any previously seen.

THE STARGATE. The chevrons are blue on the Atlantis gate, and, of course, the symbols themselves are different in this galaxy. Instead of physically spinning, the inner track spins in a pattern of light. The brightly-lit symbols also rotate around much faster than Earth's gate.

The team accesses the gate's control systems -- more like a computer than a D.H.D. -- along with a new library of addresses, most of which are presumably for the Pegasus galaxy's gate network. After dialing another world, the tried-and-true system of M.A.L.P. probes and G.D.O. transmitters are still used. At the touch of a button, the gate may be protected by an iris-like energy shield.

THE WRAITH. They are the enemy that defeated the Ancients themselves long ago. The Wraith are a hive-based species with a queen, and horrifically feed off the life force of other beings. They maintain a thousand worlds populated by beings used for food. The Wraith are described as having pale green-tinged skin and black eyes, and have an incredible power to regenerate -- so much so that Dr. Beckett speculates that they may not even die of old age the same way that humans do. They also appear to have some form of psionic ability.

Stargate Atlantis begins production in late February, and will premiere early this summer on The Sci-Fi Channel! Keep your chevrons lock on the Atlantis section for continuing developments and a Season One episode guide.

MGM Hosts A Teaser Website
Well..there is literally nothing to say about the website, except that theres a nice pic up.
Official Site
January 12, 2004
Michael Shanks gates to Stargate Atlantis
Actor Michael Shanks ("Daniel Jackson") is intended to appear in the 2-hour premiere of Stargate Atlantis, Sci-Fi's upcoming spin-off series! GateWorld has learned that the actor, along with SG-1 co-star Richard Dean Anderson ("Jack O'Neill"), has been written in to the premiere episode to help jump-start the new series.

Beware of spoilers below for the Atlantis premiere, "Rising," and for the Season Seven SG-1 finale, "The Lost City."

Having been promoted to the rank of general, Jack O'Neill revisits the outpost of the Ancients buried a mile beneath the ice of Antarctica. When his helicopter (piloted by Major John Sheppard) lands, he is met by Dr. Daniel Jackson, whom he introduces to Sheppard. Daniel is working with the scientists at the base, led by Elizabeth Weir, and discusses the apparent location of the Ancients' lost city -- the distant Pegasus galaxy.

Weir and her team travel to the planet via the Stargate at the S.G.C., also indicating that actor Gary Jones may be called upon to reprise his character of Technician Davis, calling out the eight chevrons required to dial the world on which Atlantis is located.

Stargate Atlantis is expected to premiere in June, alongside SG-1's eighth season.

January 9, 2004
Anderson helps kick off Stargate Atlantis
Stargate SG-1 star Richard Dean Anderson ("Colonel Jack O'Neill") will appear in the premiere episode of the spin-off series Stargate Atlantis, the actor told the Canadian Press news agency. "We're shooting it concurrently and it will hopefully pick up the ball," Anderson said. "I'll help launch it. I'll be in the pilot but after that I'm done."

Colonel O'Neill appears in the episode to help convince Major John Sheppard, one of Atlantis' regular characters, to join the dangerous mission to another galaxy.

Anderson also said that Season Eight of SG-1, which begins filming in February, will be his final year with the long-running series.

"I have a five-year-old daughter who I don't get to see enough," Anderson said, "I'm going to build a house in California and I'm going to learn Spanish."

January 8, 2004
First details on Atlantis premiere episode
The first plot information on the premiere episode of Stargate Atlantis has surfaced! The episode is tentatively titled "Rising" (or "Rise.") The report also includes details on the spin-off series' regular cast of characters, for which actors are currently being auditioned. Beware of spoilers for the 2-part premiere in the report below:

Teyla (formerly "Mikala") now has a last name, "Emmagan." Locations in the first episode include Atlantis, Athos city ("Athos" may be the name of the planet), and an alien encampment. The team from Earth is in a distant galaxy far from home, and are looking for something called ZPMs. The Wraith are believed to be aliens that defeated the Ancients long ago (possibly the virus that nearly wiped out the Ancients was no accident).

The inhabitants of the world featured in this episode -- apparently a different world than the one where Atlantis is located, the show's home base -- were once advanced, but when the Wraith attack happened, they where decimated. These are Teyla's people, and they fear to return to the great city their ancestors once inhabited, believing that the Wraith will return. They now live in a primitive state, at least by appearances, but still possess some high-level technology and the knowledge of how to use it. They do not allow themselves to become too advanced, because every few hundred years the Wraith return to "cull their human herd." They believe that if they advance to their previous level, the Wraith will annihilate them completely.

The new series is based in the lost city of Atlantis, in another galaxy. Under the command of Dr. Elizabeth Weir, the team will eventually establish a base in the city, which includes a Stargate. But in the premiere, Atlantis seems to be underwater, or at least at the edge of an ocean, so that a great energy shield must hold back the waters. The team's arrival damages this, forcing them at one point to abandon the city before the shield fails completely. (The episode's title, "Rising," could refer to the eventual destination of the city and the new base.)

Other characters, both regulars and guest characters for the premiere, include Colonel Marshall Sumner (the military commander), Major John Sheppard (a team member, who builds a relationship with the alien Teyla), Lieutenant Aiden Ford (another team member), Bates, (another team member), Wex, Jinto, Halling, and Toran (four of Teyla's people), Dr. Benjamin Ingrim (a scientist), and Grodin (apparently a scientist or engineer, who works with Dr. Ingrim).

Based on previous reports, it appears as though the series regulars for Atlantis include at least Weir, Sheppard, Ingrim, Ford, and Teyla. Though only a major in rank, Sheppard will probably become the commander of the exploratory team after Colonel Sumner meets an ill fate. Weir will likely remain at the Atlantis base, in a role similar to that played by General Hammond on SG-1.

Stargate Atlantis premieres this June on The Sci-Fi Channel, and is expected to air alongside SG-1's eighth season on Friday nights. Keep your chevrons locked on GateWorld for more news!

More regular characters revealed for Atlantis
Three new characters for the spin-off series Stargate Atlantis have been revealed, courtesy of FilmJerk.com and confirmed by GateWorld. Two of the three appear to be series regulars, and will join Major John Sheppard, Dr. Elizabeth Weir and Teyla (formerly "Mikala") (story).

Beware of possible spoilers for the first episode of Atlantis in the report below! Here's how the three characters are described:

Lt. Aiden Ford:
"Described as 'boyishly good-looking, with an ebullient sense of humor to match,' this 25-year-old is an officer who volunteers for the Atlantis mission. A good man in a tight spot, he accompanies Major Sheppard on a perilous rescue mission to the Wraith planet, where unspeakable terrors lurk. He keeps a cool head and his finger on the trigger when the Wraiths are closing in on the rescue party."

Dr. Benjamin Ingram:
"In his 40's, Ingram is a brilliant African Canadian scientist who has done a heroic job of interfacing modern technology with those of the Ancients, and is in large part responsible for the new discoveries that have made the Atlantis mission possible. However, it bothers Ingram that he doesn't possess the rare gene that would allow him to physically interact with the Ancients' technology. He also accompanies Dr. Weir and Major Sheppard on their risky journey to another galaxy, where Atlantis now lies."

Colonel Marshall Sumner:
"A hardened officer with a buzz cut and a hair-trigger temper, 50-year-old Sumner is no-nonsense and autocratic, a man who is accustomed to having his orders followed without question. He is the military leader of the Atlantis expedition, but he is second-in-command to Dr. Weir. At times, he forgets who's in charge, but he is an inspired commander who is committed to the mission, however dangerous. Later, he refuses to give vital information to the Wraith Queen before meeting an untimely end. Producers are looking for star names for this role."

Sumner's role may be the one being eyed by 41-year-old actor Adam Baldwin (story), indicating that he may not be a regular on the series, should the character in fact be killed off early in the show's run.

The site also reports that series regular Mikala's name has been changed to Teyla, and that at least one regular character has been cast. The premiere episode is currently titled "Rising," according to the report, and no director has yet been assigned.

Keep in mind that, as Stargate Atlantis does not begin filming until February, this information is subject to change by the production studio.
